My order sat in the window 10 mins and when I asked about my food, she told me she was busy packing togo orders. My food was cold. They offered to make me a new order, I instead ordered General Tso Chicken. Although it looks pretty, it was horrible! The chicken was soggy, and drowned in sauce. When I asked for a refund, I was told I had to wait until manager came in and call back. When I called they did not answer. There's only so much you can say about the food (although the brown rice was quite tasty), but the thing I can't stop thinking about is why anyone would build a restaurant in Houston with a glass roof? I went for lunch yesterday and surprise, surprise it was HOT inside with the sun blazing directly down on everyone. It was like eating in a greenhouse. Nearly everyone inside (including the employees) moved to the edges of the room to find spots of shade. I absolutely love The Rice Box! My first try was at the location in the Heights a few years ago. Then of course when a new location opened in River Oaks, I had to try it as well. I just left the new location in Rice Village. It doesn't disappoint!! First of all, the decor & vibe is fresh & consistent throughout each location. The owner has been holding true to his initial vision: a fan of dystopic sci-fi & anime films. My go-to dish is the Kung Pa Chicken. Carefully crafted, one order at a time, fresh. Just look at the picture! And the flavorful taste is such a treat, it has me coming back for more. The portions are very large, two people can easily share or better yet, take it home for a seconds:) Ut was here at The Rice Box that I had my first nitro tea; it's really the best but on a hot day, I'd like it over ice. We came here as we were craving a Chinese place near the downtown area. TIP: make sure you have the right branch. We saw a different location that was bigger and we made the mistake of not verifying the right address. This location is in a weird spot. It is so small and we were forced to eat outside. Cars are buzzing by In addition to seeing the "parking lot drama." Parking is so tight that you expect someone's car to get hit. The food it pretty good though. I got a brocoli beef. HUGE portions. We went up to the counter and talked to 3 different people and didn't get offered a substitute or anything, meanwhile order after order/doordashes were still going out? I got my food at 8:30 and we left at 10pm without his food because we just got tired of waiting. My little fam and I went on Sunday for dinner. We were starving and we had never had the rice box before. It's a pretty cool place with the whole Tokyo theme and neon lights. We ordered with a young guy that seemed like he didn't wanna be there. He was not too helpful. The rest of the staff was nice. We did have an issue with having to wait for our order. It wasn't too busy when we came in as we saw mostly people were eating or finishing up. A family of five came after us and they got their order before us. I had to go an and ask about our order and I'm not really sure what happened but eventually it came out. We were kind of upset but one of the guys on staff did help us out and we were satisfied with his solution to our problem. I'm not sure if he was the manager . Anyways the food was good and a really good portion. My son really enjoyed the lomein and he is picky. I had the kung pow chicken and it was good. The fried chicken dumplings had a great taste going on. The vegetable egg roll was a bit too mushy Inside for my liking and a tiny bit burnt. Also ordered the peppered steak with fried rice, fried rice was soft and good. Peppered steak was also dry and a bit old, the "spicy" option wasn't spicy but had good flavor. The vegetables in the peppered steak were good loved the onions. Review is based on delivered food. The physical location looks very cool and eating inside it might make up for some of the shortcomings. This time we had kung pao chicken, veg lo mein, salt &pepper cauliflower, hot sour soup. It's a second time order here. Portions are big - the lo mein box seemed like a magic trick, where it stayed full for a long time no matter how much we ate out of it. At this point I don't think we'd eat from here again. All the dishes were pretty bland and excessively oily, like slightly better 1970s midwestern suburban Chinese takeout. Very little actual flavor in any of the dishes regardless of heat level, although the vegetables seemed fresh not frozen. The kung pao was especially disappointing - basically just mild stir-fried chicken. Also little issues with the final details - one broken fortune cookie fora two-person order; we paid a dollar for extra hot mustard and got a single tiny plastic packet; one of the egg rolls burned on the bottom. We'd ignore those things if the actual food were better. You do get a lot of it - the order described above could have fed four people easily, so lots of leftovers. And this kind of food is always good cold the next day for breakfast. Probably it seemed better coming from a truck on campus between classes. For an actual restaurant the recipes and techniques really need to be tweaked and someone has to be doing a final check on the delivery orders. After all it's not exactly cheap. read more
