Drinks are delicious (would highly recommend the Suicide Barbie with friends!). The food is also excellent, especially the appetizer sampler. Would highly recommend the nachos, however I feel like the servings are too large. Maybe a half order of nachos for happy hour would be better, as I hate to throw away such a delicious platter. I've given it multiple chances and every time I'm disappointed by the lazy bartenders and awful customer service, so I'm done. The only good thing was the manager Jen who talked to us the other week, was super nice and understanding and gave us a gift card for our prior bad service, but then we went back with the gift card and got super crappy service from a bartender who has attitude. Ruined it for us. Also, just an FYI, the bartenders love lying and saying they can't make blended drinks after 10pm. That's not a policy the Reef has, I know this for fact as I've talked to both the main manager and a shift manager on two separate occasions within a week after ordering a blended drink and being told no by two different girl bartenders. The second time I even told the bartender it wasn't a policy and she proceeded to tell me the blender was clean and she wasn't going to go get it out and make me a drink. What attitude, that's how you treat a customer? Order all the blended drinks you want, they're being lazy and not wanting to wash a blender out is crappy service and I know they've been telling lots of people no blended drinks after 10. You know a business has awful customer service when you have a loaded gift card and that can't even bring you back anymore. I've lived in Boise for about a month and a half now. I'd say that Reef is my current favorite place I've discovered in my explorations. The drinks are on point and they carry my favorite Puerto Rican Rum, Don Q, so I literally cannot go wrong with an drink I choose. The Party Bowls are a fan favorite. I've several times now had the same waiter, Jeff Waters, and he's always the best. Super friendly and attentive without being annoying or too much. Boise is not tropical. It is, as a matter of fact, far from tropical. So with great skepticism and a good deal of internal joking, I agreed to go out to dinner with my buddy on a Thursday evening, because he was getting married and I hadn't seen him in years. This wasn't a fancy dinner - it was just a casual get together. Location: 4 out of 5 Downtown Boise isn't that big. I suppose that it's within walking distance from anywhere downtown. I drove in from Meridian, popped the car in a lot, and quickly walked over. Decor: 3 out of 5 I mean, it looks like a huge TGIF. It's nothing phenomenal, it looks like casual dining, and there's a bar area. Nothing really struck me as obnoxious, and nothing really struck me as "wow, that's cool." Service: 3.5 out of 5 I'm a little perplexed at the general consensus that service is bad here. I wouldn't say it's "bad." It's "relaxed", and maybe I didn't care that much since I was hanging out with someone I hadn't seen in years. Our waitstaff was attentive, but not overbearing. There was a delay once in awhile, but I don't think anyone minded. Now, this is where I must agree that if you were eating with just 2 total people and you were left waiting for long minutes at a time without scintillating conversation, the wait could become onerous. So take what I'm saying with a grain of salt - that with the large group, wait times and service weren't exceedingly terrible. Quality of food: 3 out of 5 Got a burger with bacon. Nothing tremendous, but I appreciate the fact that it wasn't overcooked. Unfortunately, also quite forgettable. The soup that I had, however (the fish chowder) was quite good. Pricing: 2.5 out of 5 A little odd on this one. Nothing really struck me as "cheap" even by Chicago standards. I guess I can't complain that much, though - as I was technically on vacation. Some don't recommend eating here, but I don't recommend drinking here. If they didn't have that darn rooftop patio I might have never wasted my time in the first place. My case: An $18 pitcher of Newcastle. Amazing. I've lived in all four corners of the country, and I've never seen an $18 pitcher of Newcastle, which barely passes as a semi-decent import. You can go to the Fireside Inn and get a $7 pitcher of Pyramid Snowcap when it's in season, and that's what I recommend you do. Stay away from the reefs greedy hands. I always want this place to be so much better! The food actually isn't bad--a little overpriced, but not terrible. It's the service that kills. SLOW! This is one of the coolest places to go in Boise. Yes, sometimes it's a bit "douchey" with your typical Affliction shirts and haircut guys, however their drinks are great (and different) and their food....wait, I've only been there to eat once and I don't quite remember that because of those dang drinks. *sigh* Moving on though, the atmosphere is fun! In the summers their upstairs patio/tiki bar is always hopping, and it's a hoot to watch people down below on 6th, because let's face it... always AMPLE opportunity to see a fight, catfight or female breakdown! In the cooler Boise months, the patio is still open but it's all zipped up so you can still enjoy the different vibe than the floor below you. The bands are always sweet there as well! Eleven (neo soul/ new school hip-hop'ish) performed a few weekends ago and the small stage and dance floor is perfect for a chill night out without "clubbing" it up. We showed up at 8:30 for dinner and drinks. The reef advertised that music starts at 9 and then didn't start to 10:20. Female employee at top of stairs lied and so called manager was in appropriate. They charged $10 per head which cost us $40 to get into the band who started approximately 1.5 hours late. So not worth the money. Unfortunately, the college kids must be willing to tolerate and accept this poor behavior but we won't pay for such services. read more

My hubby and I choose to give the Reef a try for our monthly date night. Been living in Boise 4 years, and have never made it here until now. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised! We chose to sit out on their roof top patio. Which was casual, a little run down, but still comfortable and inviting. We each ordered an alcoholic drink, and both were mixed well and tasty. Price was fair $6 each. Mine was some kind of coconut drink and he had the special a blueberry mojito, which was way better then I expected. Food came out fairly fast and everything was nice and hot. I had the Thai chicken tacos, which had just the right amount of kick to them. My French fries were crispy and hot, and so delicious! Not sure what the breading is that they use, but very tasty! Hubby had a turkey sandwich, can't remember the exact name but something to the effect of drunken buccanner. Very tasty, and his sweet potatoes fries were delicious! Our server was friendly and attentive. We both felt like we would come back again. Seemed like a good spot we could bring friends visiting, for a casual spot for dinner and a few drinks. Only improvements I could suggest.... The wait staff seemed to have no real uniformity to their attire. Made it kind of hard to easily pick out who worked there. A little love to the patio decor would be nice, but like I said earlier it wasn't scary or uninviting. read more
