My wife and I were looking for a great Mexican food restaurant and we found it in Coa de Jima. We started with the Ceviche appetizer which was a recommendation of our wonderful waitress and it was phenomenal. It was just spicy enough to be noticed but not enough to ruin the meal. We pared it with the Cadillac margaritas which were amazing. I had the carnitas dinner which was delicious and abundant. I was excited to dine here (first visit), but was disappointed in the food and drinks. Walking in, the decor is beautiful and dramatic. Full bar, large booths. It's very inviting, if not decadent feeling. Unfortunately, the food and drinks were lacking. My mocktail was recommended by our server, but it was much too sweet, and had a weird aftertaste. We ordered chips, guac, and it came with two versions of salsa. One was incredibly bitter (tasted very vinegar-y), while the other just tasted strange. Neither me or my husband like it. The guac, however, was very good. We ordered the Seafood Ceviche, which is a dish we usually love, but not so much here! It was covered in an orange sauce that was overly acidic. It was so much and so acidic, we couldn't taste the seafood. It was lost in the sauce. It seems as though whoever's in the kitchen lacks some culinary intuition. The staff were good. Came in for brunch and ordered the CARNITAS EGGS BENEDICT and I was so disappointed. The sopas were so hard I couldn't even eat them. The flavor of everything in them was subpar. The guac was just okay. The best thing was the essentially bottomless mimosas. I would be interested to come again and see if it is a better experience. The waitress was very nice, the restaurant was very warm or the day we were in and the waitress said she complained and no one listened to her so that was unfortunate. My husband and I decided to come here for a late Father's Day dinner, cause we enjoy sneaking away by ourselves! We were seated and greeted very nicely. The waiter recommended the ceviche the special for the day. It had ahi and shrimp with lots of other ingredients , and it was placed on top of a corn tortilla. Was enough for 2 to share. I ordered the lobster enchiladas and they were so good. My husband ordered Steak Picado, was served with fresh home made tortillas. We like to share our entree s so we get to sample both. I stopped in this place almost a year ago while visiting Boise. I didn't remember being at the hotel nearby before but I remembered how to get here because of my great experience in the past. Coa de Jima is easily one of the most unique dining spots in all of Boise, mixing in the unique artwork it definitely gives you a different vibe. The food is consistently top notch, and I recently went for brunch and had what might be the best huevos rancheros I've ever had, seriously that good. The servers and bartenders really stand out here. They know the menu and the food inside and out, and they're always happy to offer recommendations if you ask. It makes the whole experience feel thoughtful and elevated without being stuffy. A couple things to plan for: parking can be tough since it's downtown, so give yourself a little extra time. Also, there are no TVs, so if you're hoping to catch a game, this isn't the spot for that. A part of the Barbacoa restaurant group, Coa De Jima is certainly a great spot for a night out. The decor and overall feel of the restaurant and bar is 10 out of 10 knockout. From the built-in tree decor, they have lining the bar to the intimate booths that you sit at the attention to detail is out of this world and the Mexican touches make it feel authentic, yet sort of campy in a good way. The cocktails as per usual, we're incredible. The Winnie the Pooh was such a good drink. A little honeycomb stir on top of it is an amazing detail. We also tried the hibiscus sour and the old-fashioned, which were both good. The traditional Molcajete is a surf and turf type entrée that they Lambay at the table, which is always so fun. And the steak Picado was cooked to perfection. This bar gets busy so the cocktails can come out a little bit slower than some other places, but you can expect that on a packed night. I also wish they served tacos during their dinner service that is an item that they only serve during the happy hour from 4 PM to 6 PM. I just can't give five stars when they don't serve tacos all night at a Mexican themed bar. Since this is part of the group that is behind Barbacoa, you can expect to see some pretty high menu prices entrées ranging from $45-$65 but the appetizers are a really good price, and the drinks I would say our averaging $13-$16. Definitely a more upscale place perfect for a date night bachelorette party a birthday celebration graduation! Definitely check it out. I will be going here again and I really enjoy their cocktails which I know I already said, but truly, you've gotta try them. read more

This is the mini version of barbacoa in a way. It's not too big of a place but the decor is beautiful you definitely get a nice vibe from this place the bathroom door tricks everyone. The drinks are absolutely amazing I really enjoyed every drink I had. The mesquite was actually really good. We had other plans fall through and were told to catch happy hour here. We were lucky enough to score bar seats at the cozy bar, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience in our relatively short time there. The bartenders, Ben and Matt, were personable, on point in service while being crazy busy from the floor, and really made our experience so much better. They have a cool...tree...behind the bar that is fun and makes the energetic atmosphere unique. Sorry I didn't get any pics of the floor and other room, but the place was fun with great food and drink. It was a two for one deal on drinks, and their margaritas were tasty. We did the esquites, which had awesome popcorn in it, first, and then did the birria and ahi street tacos, also on special, per the bartender's recommendation. They were DELICIOUS. I can't decide if the great service, well-made margs, the esquites, the street tacos, or the awesome energy in the place had the highest marks of the day, but it was definitely, without question, a five. Coa de Jima is truly a gem! We came to celebrate a birthday brunch and upon walking in, we were struck by the moody yet inviting ambiance. I appreciate the unique and tasteful decor as this felt like more than a cookie-cutter restaurant. We were sat in a round booth at a large wooden table. Speaking from personal experience, I'd like to remind all to check the booth before leaving as it's easy to leave items behind because of how the booths are shaped as well as how dark it is in the restaurant! We ordered the chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, salmon omelette, and French toast. The chilaquiles, especially with the addition of carne asada, stood out as my favorite. The combination of crispy tortillas, rich sauce, and tender carne asada was simply perfection. Service was friendly and efficient. The employees shared the history of the restaurant. The restaurant is run by the family who started Barbacoa. The wife of the owner painted all the paintings including the painting leading to the bathroom. This is definitely an elevated dining experience in terms of environment and food quality... and price. I would highly recommend Coa de Jima for celebratory events. Our experience at Coa De Jima was fantastic, and we are already looking forward to our next visit. Dear restaurant owner/GM, I'm visiting from Seattle and spent 20 years in the service industry. While dining at Coa De Jima the service was EXCEPTIONAL! It was textbook great service that unfortunately I have not found in Seattle post 2005. It's a shame, because Seattle used to provide this attentiveness to detail and it feels like a lost art. For starters, we were greeted at the entrance and the hostess was very nice. A staff person offered us a selection of sparkling or distilled water and poured our water. Our server who was also the bartender (gentleman with a mustache) was very attentive and was multitasking between the bar and our table. Great job! I asked for directions to the bathroom and another server (curly hair femme presenting) walked me to the bathroom and I shared my appreciation for great service within thd first 7 minutes. Our server brought out three long planks of food stacked on his arms. I used to do this when I served and it's hard. He also packed our food really carefully and took the time to not dump the leftovers into boxes. While we exited the restaurant, a dapper dressed gentleman thanked us for dining and shared that he appreciated us coming in. Now, let me highlight the food. The mango tuna was outstanding and the sauce was nicely balanced. The portion was huge and enough for 3 people. I appreciate the generosity and creativity with the poke style Latin fusion. The pork belly appetizer was crispy and juicy and this app felt like a main. I couldn't tell if the tortillas were house made and they were toasted nicely. The slaw cut through the fat and I liked the acidity with the salsas. The guacamole was outstanding and the house made salsa trio was delicious. Although we tried only three dishes, the flavor profiles were robust and flavorful and everything complimented each other with my virgin michelada. Good choice on the Heineken NA. I would like for the bartender, kitchen staff and the server with the curly hair to be acknowledged. They worked very hard and it is evident. Some of Seattle restaurants are including a 22%, gratuity for mediocre service. Nicer houses have some servers come to work in dirty converse and random t shorts. Service seems robotic and human interaction is not valued as much. What a wonderful restaurant to try. I'll be returning the next time I'm in town and will try the dish with the flambé effect. The food was absolutely amazing. It was played well and everything was top notch quality. Amazing taste. Honestly, the only thing we ordered that I would not order again is the bone marrow. While it tasted good, as a 17$ add on, I don't think it was worth that. The whole wait staff was very attentive and very willing to help with any questions we had. One person at our table spilled a whole dipping cup of butter for the lobster all over the place and they were super fast to help clean it up! As a Boise native, visiting can be a challenge when it comes to food and beverage location, but we were referred to this place by other locals and it did not disappoint. The music is too loud to hear the person on the other side of the table let alone the waiter. When I went it was a Saturday night and they had a DJ and a whole DJ set up. The restaurant is small and has brick walls. Definitely not ideal for loud music. Maybe just come for lunch? read more

The service is good and the server was aware of getting us refills often enough, while the food came out in a timely manner. The food was also good: I had the shrimp, crab, and avocado omelette with some chorizo added. There was no issue getting the addition to the omelette. The crispy potatoes were also very good, and the carne asada tacos had a very good flavor. The restaurant is small though and sound gets trapped and amplified, so the music was at a reasonable level for about the first 30 minutes and then suddenly shot up in volume. I tried calling to a couple of the wait staff but they couldn't hear me over the music. It was difficult to talk at our table over the volume as well. I finally flagged down the manager and asked if the music could be turned down just a bit. Ambiance, not a night club, is what I'd expect for a small restaurant. A couple of minutes later not only did the music not get turned down, it was turned up. As we looked around we saw an older guy moving to the music and looked like he had some DJ set-up. . . Yes, that's exactly what he was. A DJ at a restaurant, on a Sunday at brunch. . . It was way too loud. The manager did nothing to resolve the issue. I don't know if the DJ is related to someone with the restaurant but that was just ridiculous. I won't be returning to this restaurant. They have two other locations that I prefer anyway, with different themes and menus. They can keep the aging DJ and loud music downtown if they want. The food wasn't that good. And if I can't get the manager to resolve an obvious issue like that I will spend my money somewhere else. read more
