My husband and I stopped by Rarebit for a late brunch meal, and unfortunately Rarebit sorely missed the mark for us. My husband ordered the steak and eggs, which also came with diced potatoes. The steak was under-seasoned and simply not great. His eggs were fine (hard to mess those up) and the diced potatoes were good. My meal wasn't that much better unfortunately. I ordered chicken and waffles (a staple for me), and overall I wasn't impressed. The waffle was undercooked, and I was disappointed as it says on the menu Belgian waffle and what I got was not a Belgian waffle at all. Just a basic waffle. On the flip side, the fried chicken was actually very tasty. I think the best part of our meal other than the fried chicken was the Moscow mule that we shared. It was really good, refreshing and had a nice kick to it from the ginger. Service was fine - nothing special. Overall it was a mediocre meal and it's unlikely we'll be back. read more

As someone who has eaten a fair amount of French fries in the greater Charleston area ... these are the ones. They are thin but not shoestring thin, and they have some crisp to them but also give upscale drive in vibes. These are the ones for me. The chicken club is an 8/10 with perfectly crisp bacon, tender grilled chicken and toasted sourdough I might not have been completely blown away by it but it was a good sandwich. Stopped by midday and sat at the bar. It had a great diner vibe to it but also a gave up a nicer vibe. I bet the cocktails would be great there after work. Bartender was kind enough to ask the kitchen staff if they were able to make me the Chicken Fried Steak since I was like 30ish minutes away from when it was available so kudos to both for accommodating the request. The green beats were great and cooked well with a soft texture inside but left a crunch when you bit down on it. Wish there was more flavor to it, but a dash of salt did the trick. The chicken fried steak itself was great. Still had a good enough crunch when you bit down on the chicken. This is probably more preference, but I like my gravy to be more smooth and creamy. We saw on the easel outside: Soy Sauce Sirloin Steak. We were there. Showed up during a relatively busy time, and were seated pretty quickly. Got our menus, and ordered 2 burgers and 2 Shrimp and Grits. Ordered from the bar and got an AMAZING Espresso Martini from the bartender, who ended up being John Pringle. Drinks were awesome, food was amazing, and John even ended up taking pictures with us! FYI: the steak sells out fast. We ventured downtown for a full day of shopping. By 1 pm, I was fading quickly and needed a pick me up. We found ourselves in The Rarebit. This looks like a perfect place for a cocktail and I'd love to have one on a future visit. For this busy day, we stuck to water to rehydrate. Inside, it feels cozy and elegant, sort of that vintage cocktail bar feel with brass, rich colors and velvet draperies. The service was so friendly and prompt, without feeling rushed. I found the prices to be quite reasonable, especially on the sandwiches. The portion sizes were good, too--filling without being too large. I had the shrimp po boy with fries and my spouse had the grilled chicken club with mac and cheese. We both declared the fries to be the superior side, but I'm glad we tried the mac and cheese. It is good, but we liked the fries better. The shrimp po boy was great--very nicely balanced with the right amount of each topping. The shrimp was flavorful and crispy, without being too greasy. The sandwich stayed together nicely, which is a real achievement. I'm already looking forward to what we'll try on our next visit. read more

Stopped in today for lunch as I've been walking by for 2 years now and had never tried it! We started with the beet salad- it was fresh and sweet. I had the chicken sandwich- so crispy and delicious. The side Caesar was honestly so good I'm not quite sure why though- it had a chopped boiled egg in it and the croutons had the perfect amount of garlicky crunch. Who knew Moscow mules could be so unique and special! The rarebit is one of the funkiest spots in downtown Charleston and it's always a must stop when we visit! They specialize in Moscow mules (they have them on draft) and make their own ginger beer and ingredients. Each of these things makes their mules sooooo delicious! Had an opportunity to try The Rarebit as Mario's Italian Ristorante @ 487 King Street system software was down and was therefore not accepting customers at the time. We looked left and then right and then across the street and decided to try The Rarebit. It looked appealing enough from the outside and we were pleasantly surprised when we went inside. The taller, very private cushiony booths line one wall, a large community table down the center and great sized extended bar area complete with television screens above make this restaurant a "go to" where the food is very good and the service is friendly, welcoming and accommodating. The bar seating is very comfortable and reminded me of my NJ days of eating at the counter. Think: cushion back diner stool! We dined a little after 4 pm and we were still able to get brunch!! Kind of unheard of but Yay!! My husband had a lavish Texas French Toast with fresh fruit and I ordered the Roasted Beet Salad. To my delight both red and yellow beets were used and accompanied by arugula, goat cheese, candied pecans & served with a lemon honey vinaigrette. I wouldn't have changed as thing because these are all of my favorite ingredients in this type of salad. Just to try an additional dressing as I love to explore different tastes, I asked the server for an additional honey mustard dressing and it was one of the better ones I've tasted around town. A bit sweeter, good texture and I'm always happy when the honey mustard dressing contains little mustard seeds in the dressing! Yum. Will return and definitely a nice unexpected find. The EBC sandwich was fine pretty basic wish the bread was either browned on skillet or toasted much longer. Nothing spectacular. We had the fried tomatoes and okra. The fried tomatoes were lightly breaded and definitely seasoned. They were good, not the best I've had, but very good. The fried okra was good as well, the okra is slimy inside but that's to be expected We both had the impossible burger. It was great, perfect mix of toppings and cheese. It is in my top three favorite veggie burgers. It does not come with fries, though, so we ordered a side of them. read more

But it's a nice low country southern vibe with just the right amount of southern pop... like the mother of an ADIPI sorority chick that's from Charleston came in and decorated it with her husband that's a lowcountry duck hunter. This was our first stop after arriving in Charleston. They are a solid 3.5 stars. They were serving Saturday brunch so we decided to try it out. They are known for their Moscow Mules and I see why! It's apparently a secret recipe and they are good! For my entree I chose the chicken and waffles. The chicken was cooked perfectly but it needed salt! That was disappointing. The waffle was dense and not airy like I'm used to. The butter was supposed to be some sort of honey butter but honestly I didn't taste that. It was gritty. Overall I think it's a good place to try.
