We've spent time in Sun Valley seasonally for the last five years. We decided to shake things up last night and deviated from our list of favorite restaurants by visiting the Ram. Only upon arriving in the parking lot did we check Yelp and see that it averaged just three stars. Somewhat disappointed, we decided to make the best of it and were very nicely surprised. We had been in the Ram previously for drinks, so knew what to expect in terms of decor and ambiance. As we reviewed the menu, we ordered a dirty martini and moscow mule, both of which were very good. For starters, we ordered the peach and burrata salad and the trout appetizer. The salad was exceptional; light and delicious. The trout was also very good. Between courses, we nibbled on a tasty bread basket they brought to our table which featured three different types of bread. For the main course, we ordered the chicken breast and trout. The chicken was tasty, juicy and perfectly prepared. The trout was also excellent as was the wild rice risotto which accompanied it. Both dishes exceeded our expectations, especially after reading the Yelp reviews just prior to our dinner there. Finally, we shared a dessert which consisted of three small scoops of ice cream, each a different flavor. Nothing much, but a nice way to finish the meal. Our server was genuinely friendly and attentive and, while the prices aren't inexpensive, the bill for dinner was about what you'd expect at any high end resort like Sun Valley. All in all, it was one of the better meals we've ever had anywhere in Sun Valley or Ketchum and much better than we had anticipated. We'll definitely be back. read more

I was to lecture the next day to an association of medical professionals that were having a convention at the Inn. I had not eaten all day as it had been a hectic process of getting to this resort from my home in rural Western Washington. When I arrived I realized I had no vehicle as I flew in and took the shuttle to the Inn. This is a quiet type ski village. Not Whistler! I expected I would have to wait till morning to find a decent meal. But, boy was I wrong. After getting lucky that a reservation had just cancelled I was shown to a window booth the looked out on white light lit trees and glowing soft snow surrounding the village walk. Jan, the waiter, was helpful and just engaging enough to be remarkably helpful and respectful enough to allow me to work on my mental lecture notes with minimal necessary interactions. He was pleasant and, though having been called to head the management of 2 tables of 20 guests, provided me desert options and delivery in a timely and professional manner. The Food was very very good. I would have said exceptional but I had eaten di at two Michelin stared restaurants in Las Vegas the weekend before, my standards were unfair. The crisp artichoke salad I ache for, even as I write this review. The lamb shank fell off of the bone and, though a bit dry, was flavorful and attractive. By the time I headed back to my room the place was so filled with boisterous, yet joyful laughter and talk. I dead-ended 2 times because of extra chairs that I had to reroute to reach the hostess again. My close accommodations was a plus and the quiet place to refine my talk was appreciated. No, you don't want to go here because it takes 1h15m to get your food after you're seated and it's overpriced even for a couple used to San Francisco prices. Salad and entrée for 2 people without wine cost $105, but you don't get the $105 experience. We got a reservation on Open Table and we were seated as expected. It took 20 minutes before a waiter even got us menus then another 10 minutes before we could order and get a bread basket (the bread was cold ... not an absence of warmed upness-- it was like refrigerator cold) . The food didn't hit the table until 1h15m after we sat down. The only reason why this didn't get a 0 star (well, Yelp doesn't allow it, but let's pretend), is that the manager felt bad for us and several other tables and comp'd us soup in the meantime while we waited for food. The food was decently tasty, but a little over seasoned. Guinea hen wrapped in prosciutto tasted good, but the dish seemed confused between a savory or sweet objective. The Sturgeon had great taste tuning, but was under-cooked so it looked like raw fish in the middle. I would not recommend this as part of your Sun Valley experience unfortunately. - K read more

The Ram offers fine dining with prices commensurate. The food and service are of respectable quality. But what I found highly disagreeable, almost insulting, was their wine list. It is dominated with higher-end fine bottlings with prices to match. Many, if not most of the offerings are over $100 and extend to as much as $220. When offerings wines of this quality and expense, the diner should reasonably expect to be told the vintage year of offered bottling. But Ram's wine list does no such thing. This practice one expects in budget eateries. But it is incomprehensible to me that a supposedly fine dining restaurant would not tell you up front the vintage of $200 wine. Ram offers even more exclusive and expensive wines ($500+) in a separate reserve listing that does specify vintage. But no such information is provided on their regular wine list. Our server tried to explain that they "don't know what the year of the wines are that are shipped to them". It would seem that someone should be taking inventory. And while the server was more than willing to check on individual bottles for the vintage, sending someone to investigate the production year of even 2 or 3 bottles is a major inconvenience to a diner and waste of time for both the server and the dining party. And even then, it makes the wine selection process problematic. This omission undermines the professional integrity of a restaurant purporting to offer fine dining. I left the meal with a sense of disappointment. The Sun Valley resort has made great strides in improving it food service in recent years. This tells me they still have a ways to go. read more

The Ram restaurant was booked so we settled in their spacious bar area with plenty of tables and same menu. The food was meh, nothing extraordinary and pricey. The burger and fries were decently tasty but the trout was bland. read more

After three bites my finance' and I felt like an anchor was weighing us down. Felt overfull for hours after. I recooked the leftovers on a pan in the oven and drained off all the fat/butter. Just went to the new Ram Bar in the Sun Valley Village. Good ambiance and decor. Good places to sit. But very expensive and skimpy drinks. Only 3 beers on tap. One craft IPA and two other crappy beers. Full 15 buck glasses of wine look like half glasses. Service not great either. It took forever to get the bill. Didn't try the food yet but looks like it could be good. read more

We went to the Ram for dinner and it did not dissappoint. The menu was great, the food was delicious and the service was stellar. They had a live piano player the whole time, which really added to the ambiance. It's expensive, but you know that going in to it. We would definitely come back when we come to Sun Valley again. There are a lot of places to eat around and in ketchum, but the rich character of this restaurant and ambiance make it incredibly special. read more

The service was so so, the food was not that great but very expensive. We ordered the ribeye but got the filet. So the sides etc were not what we ordered. On top of that the food was cold, and when we mentioned the mix up with our steaks, she apologized, but since the service was so slow, we were not about to send it back and wait for more cold steak. Over priced, slow and lousy food. Do not waste your time or money here. There are so many other places to eat in town, that it is worth not staying and eating here. read more

The food was good, the service was not. Half empty restaurant and we got the table in the walkway that everyone got to bump into ad they walked by, even with a rsvp. As I said, the food was good. I ate the Idaho ruby trout, all of it. My wife had the thyme and rosemary chicken. Ambience and decor are nice, friendly atmosphere. The Ram is part of the Sun Valley Company group of restaurants. Over the years it has at times been pretty good. That is not the case this year. The Ram is expensive, with entrees in the low $30s to upper $40s. For this price you would expect very nice ambience and excellent service, along with outstanding food. The ambience is OK, Early American decor, nothing special, but with linen and silver on the tables. Not a problem. Service was below par. The first thing the waitress said was sorry, we're very busy, and will do the best we can. The dining room was half empty, but there were people eating on the patio. How is this busy? For this price the restaurant should insure there are ample servers and cooks to cope with the customers. And the service was confused. The waitress was sort of friendly, but not someone who made you happy to be there. There was no salt or pepper shaker on the table. The fondue heating fuel started leaking onto the table cloth, and we had to blow it out to prevent a fire. The waitress said that was the 2nd one that leaked that evening. There were 6 of us, and when the entrees came it took 4 - 5 minutes before we all were served. Some of the food was cold instead of warm. The menu is very limited, at least for me - not much that appealed. Some of the entrees were quite good, so that is a plus. The dessert was awful - a complete lack of flavor. Overall The Ram is too expensive, with poor service, and some good food. Not worth returning, If Sun Valley Lodge wants to be a five star destination, they should get their act together and provide dining worthy of the prices they charge. read more

I have been going to Sun Valley with my family my entire life but it wasn't until just recently that I ate at the Ram. My wife and I ordered the cheese fondue appetizer and that was wonderful! I ordered the lamb shank and she ordered the steak for our entrees. I must say, the steak was the better of the two; the meat was so tender you could cut it with a fork. We were there for our anniversary and the manager sent over a complimentary bottle of sparkling cider, so that was a very nice gesture. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place, although as somewhere for a couple and not for those on a strict budget. read more

The food, unfortunately, was mediocre at best with an abundance of strong vinegar and wine sause without any other meaningful seasonings. We had a great meal, a bit above average in price, with typical ski resort friendly but unsophisticated service. ugh, I can't stand this place. The piano player is nice but the food is whatever. It is standard "upscale" hotel food (bleh), and the service is never consistent. Sometimes it's okay, but sometimes it's horrible. Skip the pretension and go to the Pioneer or The Christiania instead. read more

Our server was a true professional as were most of her colleagues. Fondue was fun. Sturgeon special cooked perfectly. Not cheap and the booths are not comfy if you're over 5'6" tall. A great experience with a lot of character. I also like Gretchen's at the Lodge but it is more generic. read more

We had dinner at The Ram this week and it was nothing short of absolutely amazing all the way around. Our dinner began with a very knowledgeable manager, Michael, who took the time to personally walk us through the extensive wine list with detailed descriptions of each of the wines. His descriptions and stories behind the wines was not only impressive but left us feeling confident in our choices for each course. Next our server came to the table, he was polite and prompt with each course of the meal. We then had a visit from the chef, Adam Fischer who took us on a trip around the world explaining the origins of ingredients of each of our dishes. We chose the fondue for an appetizer- with its mixture of fontina and gruyere was delicious and the vegetables and potatoes were cooked perfectly. We also enjoyed the Spanish octopus which the way they prepared it left the octopus meat tender and not the usual rubbery consistency sometimes found with octopus. For our main course we chose the Iberico Pork Chop and Wagyu Steak. Both were amazing and cooked to perfection. We sampled everything on the dessert menu and were left in a state of bliss. Went there for happy hour; had a couple of excellent martinis prepared the way I like them with blue cheese olives they made just for me. Honored their happy hour pricing for martinis even though it was wrong online. Also got a drink on the house as they tested some possible summer drink items. Everyone's meal looked stellar and they said it was delicious. However my gnocchi wasn't great at all. I've made gnocchi from scratch and it was like soft pillows melting in my mouth. These small squares of whatever it was wasn't good at all. But I'm coming from making gnocchi with my Italian cooking instructor who has 3 International cooking schools. We stayed at the Sun Valley Inn which is where the The Ram is located and ended up having dinner there the majority of the time. The service, food and atmosphere are wonderful. Highlights include the fondue (my husband is Swiss and he thought it was one of the best he's had!), the Idaho trout, cod, and caramel dessert. Basically everything we had was great! The Ram offers reasonably good Austrian / American cuisine in a pleasant ambience that includes outdoor terrace seating in warm weather and a pianist playing showtunes. So why do I give it just one star? The service was excruciatingly slow--1 hour and 50 minutes to get our entrees. It was so slow that the ancillary staff began to clear our silverware and bread plates, thinking that we had finished our meal. Our waitperson's excuse was that the kitchen was backed up because of a large party having dinner. Guess what--that's not our problem, particularly in view of how pricey this place is. At the very least they should have offered us a break on the price of the wine, or a complimentary dessert. read more

We had a wonderful family 80th birthday dinner at the Ram Restaurant. Michael the manager took excellent care of us--met with us prior to the event and assisted us in creating a menu, selecting wines and doing the seating, Michael's help was key and made our dinner a success. Larry's piano playing was excellent (as usual) and the food was outstanding. Adam, the chef, put together a lobster bisque, excellent cheese appetizer platters and really wonderful lamb and salmon entrees. As bad a meals I've ever had in Sun Valley after 25 years of dining in Sun Valley. All four of us complained. Very expensive and the portions are skimpy. $34 for 4 tiny pieces of tuna. Expected a tuna steak based on the menu. Steak tartare advertised as having an egg but it was egg shaving so that the egg could be reused . Tried to complain to the waitress but could not find her. Restaurant tried to make amends by providing us with 4 scallops but gave us three instead. Restaurant obviously trying to make their year during Christmas by charging high prices and providing skimpy portions. Do yourself a favor and don't go there. read more
