In Ketchum for "Trailing of the Sheep" festival and wanted to grab a quick and simple lunch. A burger at Grumpys' sounded good. It is a hole-in-the-wall just off the main drag. The decor is garage or frat boy chic with a collection of old beer cans on the wall. We ordered hamburgers with fries that included pickles, lettuce and their sauce. Inside dining is very tight. The service was quick and the fries were hot, nicely salted. The burger was decent and filled a void. The male or owner behind the counter must be deaf as he was speaking at a shouting level. His history of past drug use drowned out our conversation. I'm sure he was trying to be engaging, but dude, no one wants to hear of your sorted history. DIAL IT BACK! It is not just about you. If I finished a day of skiing, Grumpys' might be a better option. The food was quick and inexpensive. To be honest, it is a burger / bar shack. After a brisk 20-minute wait just to order two cheeseburgers (clearly a complex culinary undertaking requiring advanced degrees), I was rewarded with the privilege of practicing my homeless impression by sitting on the sidewalk for another 30 minutes. Nothing says "fine dining" like concrete yoga while watching other people eat. But then- chef's kiss -came the pièce de résistance. The owner emerged like a defeated general addressing his troops and delivered what I can only describe as the most spectacular public relations disaster in hospitality history: "Attention, there appears to be more seats than the size of the kitchen can support, it may be a while for your food. My burger craving was perfectly satisfied at Grumpy's, thanks to others' Yelp reviews. A tiny little place, the main room at Grumpy's has a bar and a few tables. There are at least two other sheltered "shacks" on property with tables where you can also eat. We noticed that everyone in the main room kept their coats on, which we did as well. It wasn't freezing, and it was nice that we weren't stifling with our coats on--when you need to remove winter gear inside, where the heck do you pile it all in a small place?? The temperature, with coats on, felt perfect to me. The menu is pretty comprehensive, even if it's posted quite small right next to the counter (where you order). Several options for hot dogs, corn dogs, chili dogs, different burgers included Beyond burgers. I didn't get a photo of the menu, but there was a bunch of stuff on there. It's not on the hill but for that truly apres ski bum vibe, Grumpy's has it in spades. Locals of all ages (but mostly 20 somethings) are dropping in from 3 to about 5 for schooners and burgers. There may be a line to get to the bartender but it moves fast and the fries are at the ready. In Ketchum you gotta choose a side, Grumpy's vs Lefty's. I gotta choose the latter only because Grumpy's is too hit and miss. Burgers are on point most times. If it's too busy the food quality will suffer. You might get it over or under. Cool thing though, Grumpy's will make you some goofy combos. Want a Chorizo burger, they'll do it. When you do get your food how you ordered it, it's good. Schooners are the way to go drink wise, of course. Biggest downside and the main reason I avoid this place. I have had multiple visits here when my tab was charged for sh!t I didn't order. Have had several times where I had 3 schooners and somehow my tab was $50. Plus, it's inconsistent as f*. My friends & I went to Grumpy's yesterday. We are all Idaho natives...yes we do exist!!! Anyway, this place was busy & granted it was a Saturday but I was so dissatisfied with the service & food I'll never go back. The most disappointing part of our experience was the disgusting music (actually calling it music is an insult to music) being blasted outside while you dined. I HAVE NEVER HEARD MORE GRAPHIC NOISE REGARDING ORAL SEX being blasted on high volume. It was a CD by same artist & it was a lot of same graphic words over & over in music. This establishment is not a damn frat party or night club. Whoever made the decision to play this while people are eating & drinking beer needs to have their head examined. I have great pals so I usually have a great time. The skooners were absolutely flowing and for a sec I thought that I wasn't ever going to leave. Eventually we left, though because I had a BN coming. I get poop fright and so I can't really use the bathroom there cause the toilet doesn't have and stalls. I'll always come back though. read more
