first, i remember the old duchin room ( before renovations).it was warm and imbued with the history of the decades of hollywood, politics and skiing greats. i think it has lost some of that charm, but its current iteration is still quite good. as sun v alley residents we go there occasionally to get a dose of nostalgia, and interesting bites. it is relaxing to listen to the pianist and sample the creative appetizers. the truffle fries are a great choice. best to visit there in slack or quiet weekdays since it can get noisy and crowded. read more

Great food, drinks & service! Love the servers here and it's a laid back alternative to Gretchen's. One of my husband and I's favorite spots with or without our kids. One thing the Sun Valley Corp. has utterly and completely ruined is the Duchin Room. It used to be the place to go and enjoy a civilized drink and conversation, even a dance. It was a piece of history with impeccable service, stunning drinks, in a place that has hosted most of the greats of film, entertainment and politics. Now it's an eatery where people are shoveling food from low tables into their mouths, while ill-manered brats are running around and nonone even tries to find you a seat or welcome you. And the worse of it is..... the restaurant opposite is empty. Few places in the US have managed to be this destroyed and run into the mud. What an incredible shame. The only thing that could be improved is to provide bibbs to catch the food falling on the floor TO BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS. read more

It is a nice lounge but many families with children come in. Duchin Lounge was intended as an elegant adult bar where cocktails could be enjoyed as the piano played. The families should be encouraged to dine at the Village Tavern on the resort property as it is more suited for families with children. read more

DELICIOUS DRINKS & FOOD! We were not staying here, but it was recommended we come to the Duchin Lounge for great drinks. We ordered the fig & sage old fashioned and the apple orchard hot toddy type drink and both of them were delicious! We also split the flat iron steak sandwich and added fries and they even split the plates/portions for us! The sandwich and fries were soooo delicious! We loved everything about this little impromptu afternoon cocktail and bite - it did set us back $75 with tip but it's worth it!!! Service was a bit slow but the lounge was pretty busy. Such a fun atmosphere! They had live music on Friday night which really made the place come to life (40/50s vibe!). It was very busy when we arrived and we didn't have a reservation but we put our name down and got a drink from the bar while trying to plan a next spot for dinner... and right as we were about to leave, we got a table! Ordered 4 different appetizers which were deeeeeelicious - however, if you're not a fan of orange zest, don't order the baked Brie because they put orange on it ... wasn't my favorite. I would also recommend trying the Thai wraps next time because another table ordered those and they smelled SO good. Remember, you are in Sun Valley at the lodge so things are a bit...more... swanky. Prices are on the top tier, the clientele probably have more money than you buuuuut no one can have more fun than you! Kick back and relax, listen to the amazing pianist all while sipping a stellar cocktail. The plush couches suck you in and the bustling of people will keep you watching, some of which are in robes, which made me giggle. The services was relaxed but on cue. Talking with your friends is slightly more difficult because this place is alive. We managed to chat and laugh but we are professionals, we do fun no matter the environment. read more

I bumped into a friend at the bus stop who was all dressed up and she told me she was headed to the Duchin for a drink and to listen to the piano player and his two band mates. She was really excited that she'd finally found a jazz pianist who was really talented and also connected well with the clientele. So on the spur of the moment I changed into some nicer clothes and drove to the Sun Valley Lodge myself to check out what she was referring to. I ended up being totally mesmarized by the music: the pianist was a magician with fingers that danced effortlessly over the keys to conjure up sublime melodies enhanced with entrancing riffs and dazzling improvisations. The bass player and vocalist were also impressive musicians, with immaculate timing and sensitive instrumental communications between the three of them at all times. Oh, and the bar was casual and elegant at the same time, a cosy spot to relax with a very good selection of libations. The staff was friendly and appeared to be genuinely enjoying the guests and happy to be there. I'm so glad I rediscovered this lounge -- it will be at the top of my list from here on. read more

Staying at the lodge and all is good . Nice piano music and sometimes trio. Martinis rock! Staff get busy and cater to the largest groups so singles and two, good luck. Okay so we ordered their soft rolls with butter and jam. It never came. They got busy with bigger tables and forgot about us. When confronted they said they ran out of the soft rolls and offered their sliced sour dough bread no thank you overall, everything and everyone is having a good time. It's our last night night here at the lodge and I won't let no one ruin it for me and my niece! read more

Very classy watering hole. When you think Sun Valley, this bar captures that image perfectly. There are billionaires, millionaires, and just aires all around. The bar has all the fine beverages that you need. They only carry 5 tap handles which is the real only negative. My guess is the bar is not looking to appeal to the beer aficionado. Found inside the main lodge, I absolutely love this place. The hubs and I weren't staying there but definitely will be again because of this bar. We rolled in around 5:30-6 ish. We were planning on catching a beverage or two before hitting the town for dinner. The place was super crowded! We managed to find a table off to the side in the lobby initially. Half a drink in I made a round inside the main bar area and noticed a couple of seats on the sofa with another couple. They said we could join them so we did! There was a small band playing with a lady singing lounge type music. It felt very "old timey." I loved it! Looking around the bar the small eats looked delicious so we opted to grab some with our second round of drinks. The service in the bar was top notch as well as the cocktails. For a hotel bar the prices were pretty spot on and seemed okay for a classy bar like this. We ordered a giant pretzel and the caesar salad. Both were amazing! The pretzel was warm and served with two sauces: mustard and cheese. The salad was crisp and not over dressed. I highly recommend the Hemingway Martini. The Duchin is classic "old" Sun Valley. The lobby bar in the Historic Sun Valley Lounge features a piano player in the background playing at most times, cocktails mixed with love an attention and a traditional yet upscale (bar) menu. A wonderful experience - I would recommend their happy hour as it's a tad pricey but worth every penny (just be sure to check out the menu and not order the $24 glass of wine - whoops!). But, more than the price, you're paying for the experience - a fun place to start or end your night. read more

Well the definitely changed the lodge bar for the worse. Its now family friendly and packed with families. Its still never going to be the long island iced tea crowd but its not like it was back in the day. The piano player is excellent. The service was okay but not great. My impression was it was understaffed at a very busy time for them. Still the lodge has some ambiance. But I don't think Hemingway would have drunk at this bar. :( read more

So sad. The Duchin Room we adored for so many years is gone. The new and unimproved version is a total disappointment for several reasons. All the classic historic charm is gone. No more Joe Fos group to play for us. Dance floor, gone. Now they are selling drinks yes, but for us old timers who loved the Brat Pack flavor and camaraderie of the old Duchin Room, just a wistful sadness remains for the good old days. And, all the historic photos in the hallways of the Sun Valley Lodge are gone. Why? Sometimes older is better. And it shouldn't be changed. read more

The Duchin Room has completely changed in the Sun Valley Lodge 2015 remodel. Formerly, it was a closed in room for adults, the cool place to have a drink. Now it's an open, kids-friendly family bar/restaurant. Last week, while cool jazz was being played by a jazz pianist, 12 kids had a birthday party there. I hate it. But families love it. read more

We have been going here for years. It is group seating now, so a couple is always in with a group of strangers. Ours was an L sofa with two chairs. We met a lot of people this way. The bar was packed every night the week between Christmas and New Years, and it was grabbing seats as they became open. The house trio is always wonderful. We got in late our first day and had dinner here. The Christmas Carolers came and sang a few songs. Outstanding! The room now has a lot of openings to the lobby, so if you can't get a seat in the lounge, you may find a seat right outside the lounge that may do in the mean time. People were eating and drinking in the lobby, which has a lot of seating also. read more
