Stopped here with our family of 4 for Sunday lunch. It's clearly a local staple. The food was excellent - had a fresh and home-cooked taste to it. Great variety - 7-year-old had chocolate chip pancakes, 11-year-old had a burger, and mom and dad had omelets with amazing home fries.They were busy when we were there, but the hard-working staff did their best to bring our kids' plates as soon as they were ready. Decent little "hometown" style diner - i had the cheese burger as well as the bacon cheese fries (which were quite good). Service was exactly as you'd expect at this sort of establishment - not lightning fast, however everything was made exactly to order. Finding parking may be tricky if you don't know the area well, but that's a minor point. read more

Went here after not being in the area for 20 years and was very disappointed!! Sat at a dirty table for 5 minutes before server cleared it. Ordered our food got our coffee. Asked for coffee refill and waited 15 minutes for the refill after I went up to the counter with my cups to get refills and was asked to go back to my table and wait for the server to bring it to me!!! Waited for over an hour for BREAKFAST!!!!! After the server brought us 4 different orders to our table that were not ours!!! Will not return unless I hear that things have changed!! I have been here several times and never had a bad experience, staff are always very friendly and welcoming food is always amazing and coffee is delicious! Pretty good food for a college budget! :D Apple cider is AMAZING! But... they don't have it a lot. Also, god bless her for being there and working so hard, but the main waitress won't be arsed to make you a milkshake if you go to school up the hill. ;p But the burgers are great, and the desserts vary daily... red velvet cake slices are HUGE and so are brownies! But service is slow, and very passive: you have to either be a regular or keep egging them on... it's not fun, but if you're stuck in town it may be your only option. I would recommend Bickford's but that's now gone from the Brattleboro roundabout. And for those who wrote in their review about finding parking, there's a small lot in the back that's usually quite empty. Use that. :) read more

so bummed I'm spending money here. onion rings are raw and uncooked inside, they served my dad the saddest looking, cold, piece of meatloaf with cold, chunky, BROWN "mashed potatoes". it tasted even worse. my burger was served rare although I asked for medium, with brown chunks of avocado and practically an entire onion on it. I asked for lettuce and pickles and was given an entire romaine leaf and three dill spears. there was literally zero effort put into the quality of the food and the presentation. we were served by the owner which is even more disheartening. the table next to us got their food as we were leaving and were already saying how bad their food looked as well. I've come in here a few times, some days it's packed and I understand the service being less than amazing then. But I come in on a day when we are the only people in there, and the waitress checks on us once. I ordered a burger and was supposed to have avocado on it but wasn't given that. They also advertise that they have local apple cider, this is a lie it is powder from a bag in hot water. The food is normally good I just wish the service would improve. read more

My first time at the Putney Diner was peaceful and pleasant. It feels old and established, a bit like your grandmothers house. The tables are a pretty wood grain and are clean!!!! and not sticky like so often happens at syrup serving establishments ;) The menu has standard diner fare with breakfast all day. I ordered 2 eggs over easy with rye toast and home fries, coffee and water. The waitress brought our (very large, very weak diner style) coffee and water promptly and was quick with the jokes. S.O. ordered the eggs Benedict on special and really enjoyed it. My eggs were cooked perfectly, the toast was cut think and spread with lots of butter, and the home fries were different than most, cut like scalloped potatoes but spiced and crispy. The prices are standard to low for the location. Overall I really enjoyed my morning here and will be back soon to try something else. read more

I ate here once before and it was good . Unfortunately they get a 0 this time. We walked in (3 of us) and it was busy - they said 5-10 min wait whether we are at a table or the counter. We chose the counter. Over 20 minutes later another couple walked in and sat at the counter. The lady said it will be about 10 minutes- I asked her, how about us we have been here over 20 minutes. And she just looked at us and told me they were busy and it will be a little while. Fine - then don't tell me it will be 5-10 minutes . We walked out - my brother lives in town. Some Yelpers seem to have had bad experiences here. Not us. There are a number of pretty decent diners around the southern parts of VT and NH, and this is among them, based on our several trips here. We've visited only for breakfasts, and by some peculiar circumstance, we've never been here when there was a big crowd, which could color our experience. But -- what we found instead was friendly, neighbor-like service from several waitresses, diner prices (inexpensive) and tasty breakfasts. The kitchen knows to cook the home fries with lots of onions, and they come out hot and crunchy and nicely seasoned. The eggs are fresh, and so is the crispy bacon. You get a couple of tea bags for your hot tea, and the coffee has been strong and freshly brewed. So, we're very satisfied with our experiences. Always been meaning to try lunch but never have been around here at that time of day. When we do, we'll add on to this. read more

I thought this diner was great. The waitress, who seems as if she has been there since the beginning, was a hoot. My husband ordered a buckwheat pancake and she told him (TOLD HIM) he would have it with blueberries. He did and loved it. I asked for a few things different from the menu and was accommodated without a problem. The coffee was good and strong and I loved the breakfast. The eggs were fresh and the corned beef hash was made in house with peppers and onions. But I especially loved the waitress. My husband ordered 4 slices of pie to go and wanted to order a fifth but the waitress told him "No" that she was cutting him off. I am sure, with her years of experience, she knows what customers she can "mess" with and get away with it. We loved her and her sassiness so much we would go back just to see her. It took me three years of living in the area before I actually had a meal here and, well, I wasn't missing much. It's a diner. It does diner things like a diner should in a mediocre diner way---the portions are not as big as diner-sized, though. I guess I should excuse it for being a small town diner but I have had way better and cheaper diner food at small town diners in towns that aren't nearly as tourist-visited as Putney. It was a while for a server to take our order and she seemed to be hating life. We ordered two coffees, bf had a burger and fries, I ordered grilled cheese with tomato and avocado, we ordered a side of potato salad. We ordered and sat for a good 20 minutes before the server came back and said she forgot to ask how he wanted it cooked. Never did she ever come give us a refill on our coffees, our cups of water took 15 minutes and it wasn't even that busy! My grilled cheese was cold, the cheese had maybe started to melt but then it clearly sat for a while. My bf's burger was fine but his fries were disgusting- totally soaked in oil and under cooked. By the time the server came by again it was way too late to bring up our concerns- we had waited so long already we were not going to ask for remakes. Potato salad side was pricey ($4) and was just mediocre. When we asked for coffee refills, server never brought more cream. The grilled cheese would've been great if it was actually warm. read more

We made our third visit to the Putney Diner in April and we've always thought the food was very good the service was good, but we are quite amazed at how the prices seem to have really gone up since last Fall. This is one of favorite places to eat in the area. When you walk in the door you are often greeted and served by the owner who is very attentive and accommodating. The food just as great as the service. Due to limited seating, I have found on Saturdays and Sunday mornings I sometimes have to wait to get seated unless I want to sit at the counter, but the wait is always worth it. The cinnamon rolls are delicious but unfortunately only served on the weekends. The prices are very reasonable considering the portions and overall service you receive. read more

Stopped in on a busy Saturday afternoon. Quickly left and I think they prefer you leave if they are busy. There were four in our party, while walking up I held the door for another couple to go in. They mentioned to the "hostess" that it was a party of two and were told it would be a bit of a wait. I think this couple felt guilty that we let them in front of us by politley holding the door, so they asked us to let the "hostess" know there were four of us and they would let us be seated first. We were promplty put in our place that the other couple was first and we would NOT be seated first, even though the other couple acknowledged it was their request. We were then told about 5 minutes to be seated abut AT LEAST 20 minutes before our food order would be taken, all by this woman munching on a slice of bread while leaning at the counter, almost with her elbows in another customer's plate! We decided to leave and noticed the couple ahead of us left as well as we were getting in our car. read more

The Putney Diner is great for a late Sunday breakfast, and it's good old fashioned diner food, like eggs over easy, pancakes and french toast (be sure you ask for real Vermont syrup with that!), and their big breakfast skillet is delicious and is enough food for two. The coffee is good and the cups are big. The owner is very kind. Sometimes service is a little slow or you have to ask for stuff like ketchup and jam, but I have no complaints here: they work hard, your food is cooked to order, and they take special requests. It's a really nice small business that we enjoy supporting. We like to go with the Sunday newspapers and eat and hang out in a booth. We'd be lost without them! read more

The need to make it economically should not be evident when one orders their meal but it is clear today that the current proprietors are watching pennies. As the place filled up she had a lot on her hands as she appeared to be the only staff aside from the cook.
