My husband and I had a very disappointing experience at the Promenade Cafe aboard the Queen Mary yesterday evening. When we arrived, we went to the hostess stand to check in and were asked if we had a reservation. We said no. The hostess asked us to wait about 10 minutes, so we asked if we could step to the side and wait near the bar. The bar is close enough to the hostess stand that we could clearly see other guests checking in. While we waited, two groups approached the hostess stand after us. Both were also asked if they had reservations, and both said no. However, both groups were seated while we continued to wait. A third group then approached without a reservation. Before seating them, the hostess came over to us and asked if we would be okay with a table near the front where we had been waiting. She explained that someone would need to clean it first. We agreed and continued to wait. She then seated the next group at a table directly behind the hostess stand. No one came to clean our table, so we remained standing. At this point, we had watched three groups who arrived after us get seated while we waited patiently. I finally went back to the hostess stand. When the hostess returned and saw me standing there, she immediately went over to the table we had been waiting for and wiped it down with a dry napkin. I then calmly asked why other guests without reservations had been seated while we were still standing and waiting. She tried to explain that the other guests had previously been waitlisted. I told her that I had personally heard them say they did not have reservations. At that point, she asked if we wanted to speak with the manager. We said yes and stepped aside to wait again. While we were waiting for the manager, another group approached the hostess stand. I moved aside so they could be helped, but I paid close attention to the conversation. They also did not have a reservation. The hostess immediately seated them at the table directly behind her, a table that had been available the entire time and did not need to be cleaned. I went back to the hostess stand and questioned her about what had just happened. When she could not provide an explanation that made sense to me, I told her that what she was saying sounded like bull. I want to be very clear that I never yelled at her. I remained calm throughout the interaction. She then turned and walked away. Another employee approached and asked if we had been helped. We explained that we were waiting to speak with the manager and had already been waiting quite some time. He told us that the hostess had stepped away because she was nervous. Again, I made it clear that neither my husband nor I had yelled at her. The manager, Troy, eventually came out and asked us to step outside the restaurant to speak with him. We explained everything that had happened. We also told him that there was one very noticeable difference between us and every group that had been seated ahead of us. We were the only people of color. Troy assured us that he had known the hostess for eight months and did not believe that could possibly be the reason for what happened. He acknowledged that she may not have handled her job well, but repeatedly told us that our race could not have been a factor. We explained that we understood what he was saying, but perception is reality. We could only go by what we had just experienced and how we had been treated. We watched multiple groups without reservations arrive after us and get seated while we continued to wait. I told Troy that I would not be able to leave a positive review of the restaurant and that we no longer felt comfortable dining there. I also told him that while I believed he may be a fair and kind person, I could not say the same about the hostess based on our experience. I sincerely hoped the situation would be addressed because everyone who walks into that restaurant deserves to be treated the same. The exact same. My husband and I left the restaurant and went to the front desk, where we explained what had happened and asked for a recommendation for somewhere off property to have dinner. The difference in how we were treated at the front desk was significant. The staff was genuinely apologetic, patient, and helpful. They took the time to listen to us without dismissing or downplaying what we had experienced. The manager, Tim, and his staff were extremely kind. Tim offered to accommodate us in whatever way he could, and we sincerely thanked him for his concern. He recommended The Reef, a restaurant just down the street. We went there, were treated very well, and had a wonderful evening. The views were absolutely gorgeous. Disappointing Experience at the Queen Mary & Promenade Café I took my mom to the Queen Mary because she had been asking me to take her for quite some time. We had visited the Queen Mary many years ago, but we had never eaten at the Promenade Café, so we were looking forward to having lunch there and enjoying this historic place together. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from the moment we arrived. When entering the Queen Mary property, you have to take a parking ticket, which means there is a parking fee. As we got closer to the ship, I stopped near a desk where an employee was sitting and looking down, apparently at her phone. I said "Hello" and "Excuse me" at least three times before she finally looked up and acknowledged me. Since the Queen Mary is a huge ship with what appeared to be several entrances, I politely asked where we should park if we were going to the restaurant. With a visibly unhappy and disgruntled expression, she responded in a very unpleasant tone, "You can park anywhere in front of the ship." That really did not answer my question, especially since I was trying to find the closest entrance because my mom uses a walker. I eventually assumed that the handicapped parking area would be closest and parked there. When we approached the entrance, the same employee was still there, still without any greeting or smile. Another employee standing nearby told us that since we had a restaurant reservation, we first needed to get a voucher from the white building, then return to that entrance, take the elevator, and go to the fourth floor. The information was helpful, but again, there was absolutely no warmth or welcoming attitude. Sadly, the same type of service continued at the Promenade Café. The employee who checked us in looked at his iPad, confirmed our reservation, walked us to the table, and placed the menus down. That was it. No "Welcome," no "How are you today?" and not even a smile. Our waiter was no different. He brought us water without any friendly acknowledgment, and when he returned, simply asked, "Are you ready to order, or do you want me to come back?" Again, no smile and no sense that we were welcome or that anyone was happy to be there. I understand that everyone can have a bad day, but when nearly every employee you encounter gives the same cold and disengaged attitude, it affects the entire experience. The Queen Mary is an iconic and historic attraction, and that is exactly why the people working there should make visitors feel welcome. Employees are the face of a destination, and customer service matters--especially when people are coming to experience a famous piece of history, celebrate an outing, or, like me, bring an elderly parent somewhere they have been wanting to visit. Unfortunately, the lunch did not make up for the poor service. We did not enjoy the food at all, and combined with the unfriendly service from arrival through our meal, the entire experience was very disappointing. The Queen Mary itself is fascinating and worth seeing for its history, but based on our experience, I cannot recommend eating at the Promenade Café. We checked into the Queen Mary and started our visit with the complimentary guided tour. I highly recommend doing this as soon as you arrive because it helps you get acquainted with the ship's fascinating history and layout. This was my second stay aboard the Queen Mary, but it was my husband's first, so it was the perfect introduction. After the tour, we headed over to the Promenade Café, where we enjoyed nice glasses of wine. I had a crisp white, and my husband savored a red, while we shared a Reuben sandwich. Had an overnight stay at the Queen Mary and didn't want to venture off the ship. The cafe is one of the restaurants on ship and I was able to make a reservation within a short timeframe via Open table. When we arrived, we were promptly seated a table with scenic views. I wasn't expecting much food wise but I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the spinach dip and fish tacos. The spinach dip was abundant, enough for a group, delicious and cheesy with chunks of artichokes. The tacos were flavorful and filling. There was a kids menu and my daughter ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and fries and it was substantial for a kid. We really enjoyed our meals and I thought pricing was fair for what was served. Since dinner was so good, I also made a reservation for breakfast the next day that didn't disappoint. Our breakfast was quite good. There was a breakfast buffet going on but I wasn't famished so I went with the ala carte menu. I ordered the avocado toast and it came with fresh greens and soft boiled egg. The Promenade Cafe has fantastic service and amazing views. It was a beautiful sunny day overlooking the shores of Long Beach from the 4th level/deck/floor of the Queen Mary with bae. Our server was amazing, a one woman show and the other gentlemen on duty who helped bring out a few things, refill our drinks and clear our table was just a friendly, thoughtful and attentive. The food and drinks are enjoyable for sure with a lot of vegetarian and vegan friendly dishes clearly labeled. Salads, Soups, Appetizers/Starters, Sandwiches, Chef Suggestions, Desserts and Entrees. They have the VG (vegan), V (vegetarian) and GF (gluten-free) notes on the menu with quite a bit of options falling into each. I'd love to see a vegan friendly dessert, sandwich and Chef's recommend item in the future, but more than grateful for all they do offer. Babe ended up with the grilled quesadilla and he loved every bite! I ended up getting the Farmer's Market Salad, which I found out after that it had real feta, at first we couldn't tell because the texture was unique, but then it was obvious lol... I found this beyond super strange because they offer non-dairy/vegan cheese here and it even comes on their pasta primavera entree... Everything else is labeled perfectly on the menu so not sure what's going on with that. We had a close to perfect lunch here. All the tables were full by the time we were done. Plenty of Sunday Funday and weekend lunchers/brunchers enjoying various cocktails including some espresso martinis a table over. We had to pre-pay a $15 per person voucher than went back to our meal, it's a smart incentive to make sure people actually dine in. And the cafe can/will also validate your parking. Free Wi-Fi for the ship, that seems to work in the cafe as well. Restrooms are super clean and toward the far end the dinning area. Everything was/is well made, reasonable and thoughtful. We even got some great photos of the view and our Promenade Cafe experience. Definitely will be back and if I have the Farmer's Market Salad I'll make sure to sub the feta for their vegan cheese... We haven't been on the Queen Mary since my husband's office had their Holiday dinner at Sir Winston's years ago. We arrived at the Queen Mary via Circuit, which is a free service that we use often when our destination isn't walkable. I highly recommend Circuit!!!! We checked in and were told we needed to purchase $15 tickets that would be charged back to our dinner bill. Sure, no problem. We headed up the elevator to the 4th floor where the Promenade Cafe is. There was a wedding party that had taken over the Observation Bar, so we opted to be seated at our table...which has a better view than the bar. The bar's view is the parking lot. We ordered the Angus Beef Burger ($23), New England Clam Chowder ($14), Grilled Corned Beef Reuben ($20). Everything was delicious, but seriously...their french fries are so good! I know there are a lot of haters on this place, but the prices are pretty reasonable based on the quantity of food that you get, the quality of food, and the high level of service. I had the French dip sandwich with au jus and french fries. Fries were beer battered, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and still piping hot from the kitchen. My wife got the avocado toast and it was heaping with high quality avocado, arugula and a perfectly cooked egg on top. Just check out the photos. We felt very taken care of by our server, our food came out within 10 min (maybe less) everything was served on luxury ceramic dinnerware, and you get to stare out on a dreamy vista of LB historic skyline with boats gently passing back and forth. It feels very fancy to be there. Something else to consider is that with the price of your meal, your parking is free and you get free entrance to the ship. So feel free to stay and walk around all the decks and have a drink at the observation bar. You don't have to pay another admission. You do have to make a reservation on open table ahead of time, then you show that to the people on the first floor before entering the elevators to the ship to get onboard. We had a great meal and a great morning walking around the decks of the historic Queen Mary taking photos. It may take a little coordination in making your reservation ahead of time and bringing your parking ticket up with you to be validated, but if you can handle a few logistical steps, it is actually one of the better deals in the city. read more

Re-visited the Promenade Cafe aboard the Queen Mary for Valentines day and as usual did not disappoint. We were seated quickly and had a nice table with a beautiful view of the harbor and the Downtown Long Beach skyline. Our server Savannah was so personable, friendly and her A+ customer service truly made our dinning experience a memorable one. We came to spend some time in Long Beach and stopped at one of our favorite places the Queen Mary while here we decided to book a reservation. We booked the reservation at 7:45 as it was the earliest available. and got there around 5pm. Since we had our toddler we asked if we could be seen earlier. The host said the earliest they can take us was 7:30. When we came back they were ready for us and I did see a couple of tables empty which I wish they would've let us know since it was late and we still had to drive back to San Diego. People who were coming in with no reservation only had to wait an hour from 5pm which I thought was a little unfair. However our waitress was really kind. We ordered our food and it was delicious! Went to check out Dark Harbor at the Queen Mary the other night, but we needed to pregame with did and drinks, so we hopped on the ship and visited the Promenade Cafe. We were sat immediately, as it wasn't busy, and had seeting at the windows overlooking Long Beach across the water. Our server was quick to come to us, give us recommendations as well as take out drink orders. We tried a few controls, the Cruise to Nowhere, which sounds tasty with peach syrup and Chambord, but it ended up treating like Robitussin for some reason. The Shore Leave Spritz was nice and refreshing. The Aviation was also interesting but could have had the flavors pop a little more For food, we all tried something different. The clam chowder is good, but the bowl isn't very big, you definitely feel like you need more with it. The fish and chips are cooked well, but it feels pretty basic overall. The meatballs also felt like they needed a little more flavor and seasoning. The Promenade Cafe is a nice alternative if you don't want to pay a lot for the AYCE buffet. The food wasn't spectacular, but it was decent. Some dishes (out of 9 in our party) were really tasty like the Beef Short Ribs platter and the Short ribs grilled cheese. The salad that came with the dish was amazing w/ the vinaigrette dressing! The Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Smokestack Cheesesteak was dry and could use more aioli sauce, so make sure to ask for more. The pricing is about right given the current pricing in the industry. The menu offers a good selection for various palletts. The service was great and our server Meagan was very friendly and accommodating. The actual restaurant itself can use some updating and a good cleaning. For example, the wall paper is coming off in some areas and the tables are not wiped down well (edge of the table had a lot of old stuck on food). My first time coming here when it is not spooky in October lol it was absolutely beautiful for my grandma's birthday lunch. The food did take a while maybe about 40 minutes, but the manager made it right and comped all of our drinks. It was a new cook so they were getting used to the rhythm and flow of the tickets. This was an unfortunate experience. I'm pretty fond of a cafeteria vibe, but I think we potentially chose the wrong time or perhaps the wrong restaurant to come to on the Queen Mary. Not sure why it's rated so low. It's no culinary masterpiece but it's a decent diner with a one of a kind setting. The coffee was solid, and the clam chowder was good. The service was friendly and attentive. Hostesses were also friendly. I'd sit here again in this peaceful spot listening to music from the 40s. read more

Of course the ambiance is spectacular and as the old adage goes that means the food seldom follows suit. The venue boasts an impressive view of the Long Beach shore line. The meal l had was the Reuben Sandwich. Unfortunately it was prepared incorrectly. The meat was grilled therefore very dry and flavorless. There was barely any sauerkraut. The meat is best prepared this way: In a non-stick saute pan cook the sauerkraut, vinegar and brown sugar over medium high heat until the liquid has evaporated, about 3 minutes. Therefore the meat is juicy sweet and tangy. The most stupendous part of this meal was the fried potatoes, uniquely prepared. My husband had fish and chips and this dish was well prepared. The service was adequate our server was kind and attentive. The cocktail W60, was okay but I am not compelled to order it again, Overall, l'd stick to less exotic fare and the same for the cocktails. read more

After touring the Queen Mary decided to have lunch in the Promenade Cafe onboard. Small but elegant lunch and dinner restaurant where reservations are recommended. We didn't reserve but were asked to wait about 30 minutes, but were seated in about 10. We were immediately greeted by two servers. Everyone is so nice and friendly. We ordered two signature cocktails and as our maitre d' recommended the Reuben, we ordered that from the very nice menu offering many choices. We wanted an appetizer and dessert so we decided to share and that was a good thing! The sandwich was huge and amazingly made with real corned beef, not pastrami which is the West Coast standard. And it was delicious and so nice to have that change. The fries are great, thick and fluffy. Our appetizer was the hot spinach artichoke dip with bread toasts. So good, but such a large serving, we couldn't finish. For dessert we had the marscapone cheesecake with berries. So good! This place is out of the way and in an attraction, but don't bypass if you go to the Queen Mary which is an amazing amazing historical place. Loved our day there! read more
