This place is a great place to sit and chill with your friends. It is right outside of Zilker Park, so you can easily go grab a bite here after spending your day enjoying the outdoors. There are 6 or 7 food trucks to pick from. I tried some tacos (one BBQ shrimp and one veggie taco) from Have a Taco and an acai bowl ("peanut butter power") from Acai Hut. I really liked the BBQ shrimp tacos - they were probably my favorite thing that I tried at The Picnic. It's a good place for foodies that want picture-worthy eats. Note that the bathrooms are a little gross and there are only two, so you might have to wait for a while. I'd say to go more for the experience than for the food itself. The food was fine, don't get me wrong. It just wasn't anything to jump up and down about. But overall cool place. read more

Good basic set-up, but some serious logistics to work out. On a pleasant Sunday, about half of the vendors closed by 6:30 as they'd run out of food! Tapas Bravas had a full selection (and we ate it!) but wow, there's a learning curve. Loved: the giant shade canopies, the two big ass fans, the indoor restrooms, ample parking, abundant picnic tables. Could improve: why were half of the trailers closed? Will I ever get to try You Gonna Eat or What?!? Stop being closed! Even if you're out of food, sell drinks and work your PR charm. And no I don't need music over the PA. It's perfectly fine out here. Speaking of drinks, it's BYOB! And finally, if you're going to bring your dog, know how to handle your dog. We saw some awful puppy behavior. Dogs on tables, really? Thankfully a truck operator came over and said HEY. There are biscuits and treats, but for well-behaved dogs. But really, this isn't the waterfall under Barton Springs. This place will be crazy popular, but it's also going to be CRAZY HOT outside. Hope they buy some misters and stay open after dark. Because that Hey Cupcake Coolhaus Ice Cream is a winner. read more

Let's see if how many food parks I can think of off the top of my head: You have the South Austin Social (which pretty much no one knows about), The Bananarchy - I mean the South 1st Food Court, The La Barbeque - I mean the Goodlife Park on C. Chavez. Uhhhhh....what else? I guess that little cluster where Gordough's is on 1st. The one farther down that where Torchy's is. The one even farther past that that I don't even know what is over there. The Rio Rancho where Cow Tipping is by campus. I'm sure there's a bunch of other ones that I am forgetting. Point is is that there are a lot of food trailer parks in this town. The Picnic is better than all of them, hands down, for a variety of reasons that I'll address more in depth below: 1. PARKING Oh my stars! There is PARKING! When you see open parking in Austin, it is kind of like seeing an oasis in the desert. You get so excited. 7 times out of 10 there is a random moped parked right in the middle of your oasis, but at the Picnic this is NOT SO. They have a HUGE parking lot located on site that is an actual paved parking lot. It isn't gravel, or dirt, or mud, or lava like some of the other parks. REAL PARKING. And, and I know this is going to sound too good to be true, but they usually have spots open. Almost always. 2. BATHROOMS Not a port-a-potty that was cleaned last around ACL 2011. Two real, clean bathrooms. You have to snag a key from one of the vendors (and they usually want to trade you something in return like your keys or ID or whatever) but it is WORTH IT. 3. SEATING There are picnic tables. They are red. They are everywhere. Just when your eyes are bugging out from all of the seating, you realize that there's even more seating over by Turf and you basically swoon on the spot 4. SHADE/FANS What? You live in Texas and you don't like to go out because it is hot?! Then move somewhere else! The Picnic has shaded seating, and two HUGE fans to keep your whiny self cool. The seating over by Turf is shaded by some huge Pecan trees. 5. VARIETY Turf and Surf. Seedling. Skinny Limits. Hey, You Going To Eat or What? Tapas Bravas. Mighty Cone. Kebabalicious. Hey Cupcake! Whatever you are craving, you can probably find it here. If I could give it more than five stars, I would. read more

Finally made it out to this place, for a ROTD celebration with some of my favorite Yelpers. For the most part, this place was just great. I loved, loved, loved my grilled shrimp Po Boy from Turf & Surf. It was HUGE and stuffed with fresh veggies and shrimp. The folks running that trailer could not have been nicer and they are obviously proud of their offerings - rightly so. It's nice that they offer to make their surf fried or grilled, and they had a pretty large selection of fish including a daily special. I'll be back for sure. As many have noted, the brussel sprouts at Tapas Bravas are absolutely delicious, but at $8 a throw, they're on the expensive side. We also tried the artichoke hearts and they were pretty damn delicious, too. Since we had a big group, it was easy to try a few bites of some of the other offerings, and a couple of the notables were the sandwiches from Hey! You Gonna Eat That or What (roast beef, and the famous Monte Cristo) and the duck liver pate from Tapas Bravas. Only one negative vote from me, and that's for Mrs. P's. The food was just ok (chicken tenderloins and fries), and it was $11 for three small tenders and boring fries. Wife and daughter wanted to take home cupcakes from Hey Cupcake, and the three we got were fine. There are better cupcakeries in town, but HC was right there.... The layout of the place is nice, the tables were clean and sturdy, shade was much appreciated on this hot day, and parking was easy. My big worry is that once the condo complex opens the parking will dry up. I didn't see any other parking being built for the condo residents, so we'll have to wait and see. If there's no place to park, it won't matter how nice a place they have to sit and eat. **UPDATE** - after posting this review, I got a note from the owner of The Picnic that there is underground parking for residents of the condos, and the 80-someting spaces for The Picnic will remain. One of our "go to" spots - love several of the food trucks and the laid back vibe. Was bothered so much by the amount of trash on the ground today - napkins flying around, food containers on the ground, trash cans overflowing. It was so bothersome, it was the conversation centerpiece while there - and we left feeling pretty sad. This is hands down the best food truck park in town. There is a parking lot directly behind it with ample parking. The tables have awnings over them providing plenty of shade. There are bathrooms there. AND the selection of food trailers is phenomenal. They have a wide variety of cuisines and every single one of them is good. Our only complaint is that at noon on a Friday a few of the trucks were not open yet, which seems like a big miss on their part. But there were plenty of other options open. I really need to visit this place again - but the Friday afternoon that I went, I had an amazing monte cristo from "Are you gonna eat or what?" and looked longingly at the seedling truck which I dearly miss from it's Draughthouse residency days. Whoever runs this place, PLEASE GET RECYCLING! Saw one truck with their own little bin in front but several of them serve glass bottle drinks, and it's BYOB, so there were lots of bottles in the central trash cans. Seriously, this is Austin. We've been recycling since before it was cool. Otherwise, everything about this place is perfect. Easy left turn-in when driving from the Zilker direction, ample parking, plenty of tables and a great selection of really delicious food. Everyone in my party got something different from various trucks and we all left full and happy. Also must give a shout out to all of the food truck employees there who exemplified Texas hospitality. I loved the CONE food truck! I got the Monster Cone (Adam Richman's fave) which had fried chicken & shrimp and avocado! It was so flavorful and didn't feel super heavy. Awesome spot! It's weird because I've lived in austin 27 years and after passing down Barton Springs rd at least a million times, I can't seem to remember what was in this location before. Is that bad? We hit up the Picnic this weekend after some grueling outdoor trail activities. The hunger had built up to epic proportions. This place has awesome parking, bathrooms, shade, tables.. everything! Ahhhh.. first moment of excitement sets in when I see that Turf n' Surf po boy is in the back corner. Of course the dependable Mighty Cone is right out front as well. Hey Cupcake! has also carved out a little spot here. It feels like the old South Congress lot without all of the parking headaches. This food trailer park is a good place to eat outside in the heat! They have a large covered area and huge ceiling fans hanging! Of course we were still sweating sitting outside but, it wasn't as bad as it could have been! It was lunchtime when we went and we were able to grab a table under the covered part easily. You can park in the parking lot behind this place but, it's an hour max parking. I am not sure how the new apartment complex will affect parking when it opens behind it. They have a good selection of trucks here so, everyone can easily find something they like. read more

It was not busy yet, there were a few people hanging around. We ordered 7 tacos, all steak, for a group of us, it took a little over 30 mins to get our order. The Picnic is an awesome little food truck park. They definitely earn stars for having a dedicated bathroom facility and some great seating choices...including covered picnic tables and a nice shady area in the corner under some trees (there was a good breeze there). There was a nice variety of trucks at lunch on a Sunday. I went with students from a Special Olympics conference and we were all able to find something delicious to eat....and they especially loved the Cupcakes! The atmosphere seemed great and friendly. It was busy. Lots of people brought their dogs as well! so yay..Dog Friendly! I tried a few different trucks actually... Tapas Bravas for some fancier fare (think pate sliders, etc). I was deciding between brussel sprouts and artichoke hearts, but the brussels won out. They were pretty good too. I then got the Shiner battered Monte Cristo from "Are You Gonna Eat or What?" The jam that comes with that....oh my days it is the perfect compliment to the sandwich! We then got cupcakes and cupcakey ice cream. My friends ate at the Surf and Turf Shack...Chicken wings, tacos, etc. They all loved them. It's fun that you can make any order into a po'boy, salad, or tacos. There was also a juice truck, a fried chicken truck which was closed, a garden fresh/fancy fare type of truck (seedling I think), and the truck with chicken and fries and such in the cones. Such a great place to stop! Food for everyone! I went to the surf n turf and got an amazing po boy! It was so fresh and yummy! With wheat bread that was so tasty! My family got chicken sliders which they also enjoyed. And they got smoothies that were healthy and yummy! The best part though was the red velvet ice cream! I would fly back to Texas to get more! Quite a variety in the food trucks but so many of them close early or don't have a full menu. I was disappointed that 3pm on a Monday only four out of the eight or nine trucks were actually open.
