This spot is fairly new to the area so we decided to pop in for a quick drink. The place was pretty packed over the weekend but the service was surprisingly quick. The interior was really nice, not sure if this would be a good spot to hangout at since it's a bit noisy. The drinks were on the pricer side, but the serving sizes are definitely better than some of the other matcha spots I've tried. My ranking: 1. Pandan Coffee - this was really nice! The drink was sweet but you could still taste that strong pungent coffee flavor. It was a great combination and definitely my favorite of the three. 2. A cute little coffee spot in Bellaire with a really nice decor. I stopped by because I heard about their fish sauce coffee. This location exceeded my expectations, the black sesame cream was so delicious that I had to come back the second time to order something else to try. The service was friendly and accommodating, the decor is well put together and easy on the eyes. They open later than the other Vietnamese coffee shops in the area that also serves up a good cup. Everyone was friendly and helpful when I asked about the coffee options. We ordered the Bac Xiu (white coffee), OG Egg Coffee (rich with perfect thick egg cream foam), and thin original mochi waffles. The white coffee was creamy and mild. I would skip the mochi waffles, too bland and dense. I had to utilize a side of condensed milk for dipping, available at the pickup counter. The prices are reasonable. Inside is nice and modern looking with wood tones - I came in with a few friends on a Friday night and it was busy. It was quite challenging to find a seat, but luckily we were able to get a table. It can get loud inside, so just beware that I didn't experience this to be a quiet cafe kind of place. My boyfriend and I ordered the matcha ice cream and a peach blossom fruit tea. I honestly don't have a good sense of what is/is not good quality matcha, but I thought the ice cream was solid and it was very reasonably priced at $2.50. Can't go wrong with that in my opinion! The decor needs to be redone. All the feather duster decor gets on everyone's hair, clothes and floats around and is a food hazard. There is also a giant table in the middle and impedes the flow of the line for ordering, and pickup. It also prevents efficient cleanups by staff. The soft opening they had their soft serve ice cream, and waffle bites. Both of them were good. However, after the grand opening, it took them two additional weeks to have the soft serve ice cream again, as well as have their mochi waffles (which turned out to be soggy, heavy and dense). The drinks leave a LOT to be desired. Vietnamese coffee is usually very strong, so when you offer flavour pairings, those flavours should be able to come through but we barely got to taste the fish sauce caramel topping in their coffee, nor much of the pandan in the pandan latte. The matcha drinks, where to begin - matcha craze has people consuming "ceremonial dirt" by hefty spoonfuls. For three drinks they are using a total of 8 heaping teaspoons of matcha powder that is mixed with hot water and measured out in three drink glasses and then topped with banana cream or sesame cream or ube or mango sticky rice. None of those flavours come through at all because the matcha flavour is SO overpowering. Besides the waffle bites, and a regular Vietnamese coffee, there isn't much to bother trying here. read more

Watching them vigorously whisk the matcha really helps the wait time pass quickly and it can be quite therapeutic. It gets very busy during the weekend so be prepare to wait a bi. Customer service is friendly and the girls at the counter are nice enough to help with recommendations despite the long line. The menu has a few intriguing drinks that are exclusive like the Mam coffee. Surprisingly, despite its name, the drink was really good and did not have a strong fish sauce taste or aroma. The taste was very faint. I highly recommend trying it. I also ordered the blueberry matcha, which was similar to any other blueberry matcha drink I've had. The Phin recently opened in the Chinatown/Bellaire area of Houston. The Phine can be located in a plaza with several other businesses; many of which are other cafes. My friend recommended The Phin as they are new. The interior decorations are quite modern and simple. It was warm and inviting inside. Heads up if you can't find this place; Molly Tea right next door is bright and pink, The Phin is literally pitch black. You can't see a soul from the outside. But that's how you'll find it. The Phin is one of the newest coffee shops in Houston and it's located right next to Molly Tea in Chinatown. The interior was so so nice with lots of tables, although it was pretty tight since it was very crowded. The line moved very quickly though. I got their signature Mắm coffee, Buôn Mê coffee and the Mango Sticky Rice matcha. The Mam coffee came with a cream top and fish sauce drizzle. It sounded weird at first but it actually tasted pretty good and enhanced the coffee flavor (tasted like salted caramel). The Buon Me coffee came with a coffee cream and cocoa powder, and it was so good, I like this one more than the mam coffee. The coffee was very strong and I loved that. The mango sticky rice matcha came with mango puree on the bottom, coconut foam on top, along with bits of sticky rice. This drink was soooo good. Mango pairs really well with matcha, and the coconut was so fragrant. The drinks were made pretty quickly despite being busy, but matcha took a bit longer. They also had bottles of condensed milk and sugar syrup on the counter so if you want your drink to be sweeter, you can always add it to your likings. I waited about 40 minutes during the soft opening of Le Phin, and while the coffee itself was pretty good, the rest of the experience was a bit underwhelming. The mango sticky rice matcha was the main disappointment. The matcha base tasted more like milk than a properly balanced, high-quality matcha, missing that deep, slightly grassy, umami flavor you expect. Instead of feeling cohesive, it came across more like separate components forced together rather than a well-integrated drink. The mango element was also disappointing. The syrup tasted artificial, almost like jelly sitting at the bottom of the cup, rather than fresh or naturally sweet mango. The "sticky rice" component was the most confusing part, with a texture that felt closer to mashed potatoes than chewy sticky rice. Combined with the temperature of the drink and the different textures, it ended up as a chunky, uneven matcha latte that did not resemble what the promotional photos suggested. The cafe itself is beautiful, and they are clearly working hard and cranking out drinks quickly, especially during a soft opening. However, for the price point and the actual quality of the drinks, I would personally go elsewhere for now. Went here on their first day of soft opening! There was a good 15 minute wait on all Matcha drinks, but the staff looked like they were going through it pretty efficiently. I very much like the aesthetic of this place and how modern everything is. I ended up getting the Matcha Einspanner, which I think is a matcha latte but with cream on top? It was honestly hard to decide as all of their drinks sounded very good, particularly the Ube Matcha latte. I would give my drink a solid 8/10 and I would definitely come back to try their other drinks. The staff were friendly and we didn't have any issues. It tasted like Vietnamese coffee but not as sweet ,more on the strong bold flavor. The nuoc mam flavor is hardly there it tasted more like caramel(that's the point). The next drink I tried was the pandan latte. I could hardly taste the pandan. It was more of a sweet latte with sweet espresso flavor. If the pandan flavor was there it's very subtle. We went for the launch day and would say that the service was reasonably efficient considering the line. The store itself is very aesthetic and I could see it appealing to insta folk. The drinks themselves were good but nothing extraordinary (but keep in mind I'm not a matcha aficionado so those better versed in what constitutes good matcha may have different thoughts about it). We got the mango sticky rice matcha (as mentioned on here, it's not on the menu but is being promoted) and the matcha einspanner, neither of which are all that sweet (in case you might be expected that) Mango sticky rice: 4/5. Definitely the better of the two we tried. There nice texture as the sticky rice bits were a pleasant surprise to come across. There's some tart bits when you get to the mango and it surprisingly worked somewhat well together but isn't something I would want to get again. Matcha einspanner: 3/5. I wished it was a little sweeter (personal preference) and that the flavors were more cohesive, but you could definitely taste the matcha. For the price, we got a smaller cup than the sticky rice and wasn't much a fan of that. Overall, this is a trendy space and another way to get your matcha fix. Fish sauce coffee, there is a hint of fish sauce that if you don't try to pay attention, you won't notice it. Otherwise, it's tasted like sea salt coffee but super sweet. The matcha one, nothing special. In my opinion, the sticky rice topping doesn't go well with matcha. I like mango in matcha though. The staff were friendly. I did not have to wait long for my order. However, I saw many of staff had artificial nails that one staff's nail actually poked the gloves. This could be improved. I've visited here twice to study and have tried their Signature Matcha Latte, Mango Sticky Rice Matcha, and Pandan Latte. They use 6g of matcha in their lattes, which makes for a delicious Signature Matcha Latte and a well-balanced Mango Sticky Rice Matcha. The Mango Sticky Rice Matcha contains real sticky rice, which was a pleasant surprise. All three drinks were delicious and the mango sticky rice and pandan flavors were prominent but did not overwhelm the underlying matcha/coffee flavor. Service is friendly and fast. The einspanner foam is moreso a cheese cold foam rather than a simple vanilla foam, but I liked how it paired with the matcha. The matcha foam is grassy but sweet, and added a great amount of depth to the drink. The service here was pretty quick considering how packed The Phin usually is, and they get through orders quickly as there appears to be a large team of baristas whisking matcha traditionally with scales to measure the matcha ratio and everything. The decor and atmosphere was beautiful, although it has quite a small interior. I wouldn't say this is the best place to sit and study for long periods of time as there aren't many tables (unless you get a seat at one of the 2 larger tables) and it can get really packed with people very quickly.
