I wish I had known about Kelsy (owner/calligrapher) Darling and her magnificent talent and skills when we were planning for our big day. Contacting Kelsey is quite easy - either email or voicemail. She has an etsy shop in which you can purchase already made products and you can also commission her to do custom work. I had requested a quote for a specific product and she was able to give me the amount and time it will be ready quite quickly. As a note, she does weddings, parties, signs and just about anything you can think of to write on (wood, leaves, paper, planks). Unfortunately, I never did follow through with the purchase because it was about the same time that Hawaii Calligraphy started offering calligraphy classes in her Chinatown workshop. I was inspired to create my own "masterpiece" instead of commissioning her to do the work. Kelsey's calligraphy workshop was thorough, precise and immaculately executed!! I walked away with a workbook, tons of vendor coupons/discounts, practice sheets and everything you need to start your calligraphy practice. Her overhead projection was perfect!! Everyone in class could see what she was writing and no one was straining their necks or eyes to see her examples. I cannot boast enough about her calligraphy class (beginner)! She provided food and drinks (spirited and not) as well as our own personalized work apron. From inception to execution this gal knows her stuff and she is super friendly. Reality check: who am I kidding? I barely write in cursive yet alone calligraphy with all the fancy schmancy flourishes and swag! I need to practice a lot (a waaayyyy lot more) before I'm satisfied with the actual work. It takes years of practice to create swoon-worthy, beautiful letters and words, but until that "happens" I know that I have Kelsey/Hawaii Calligraphy to call on in case I need something written all fancy and such.

We went with clear, plexiglass hexagons that included our guests' names in gold calligraphy. Not only was Michelle extremely communicative, but she also went above & beyond by asking about ink color, sharing sketches with different font options, and recommending we include the last initial for duplicate guest names. As a bride with a million details running through her mind at any given moment, it was great to know Michelle was thinking through all the details of my place cards and I could focus on other things. So, the week before my wedding I reached out to them on Instagram. They messaged me back the next day & I was able to tell them what I was looking for. (BTW I got married in January, so it was not the summer wedding season.) I was able to order a round acrylic sign & custom Polaroid frame which both turned out beautifully in a short turnover time. Susan even sent me rendering of both pieces with different font combinations. This was super cool and helpful as a customer. They went above and beyond my expectations for contacting them at the very last minute. Located on the corner of 3rd Avenue and Waialae Avenue, across from Chaminade University/Saint Louis School, Patty's Floral Designs is a local business that has been around for decades! The quality is outstanding! I looked at Patty's Instagram posts and was blown away by the colors, varieties, and beauty of her creations! She has a good eye and is very professional! I just had to meet her after passing by the shop all of these years! We were picking up lunch from the restaurant next door. The free, small, shared parking lot is much appreciated! I went inside initially for the air-conditioning. Then, I met Patty - she is so sweet! She showed me a lei po'o (crown of flowers for the head) that she just finished... ooh! It holds its shape because she winds the flowers around a wire! Smart! I've read reviews by my friends, Kelly K., Paul M., Nicole, Holly, Ric C., and Lyn L. They were all happy with Patty's work. I said designer's choice for the bouquet and was a little worried but I shouldn't have been! When we got there Saturday morning to pick up the flowers, Patty greeted us. She was soooo nice.
