I didn't even take Art 101 in college..." However, I accepted the assignment and knew that Pictures Plus in Kaka'ako had a good reputation, so I walked in and dropped off the print. After discussing with my dentist, she went back with me the next day to Pictures Plus to upgrade from plexiglass to Museum Quality Glass because this portrait of Bishop Larry Silva (Diocese of Honolulu) is a gift to the Bishop at his upcoming 50th Anniversary dinner. Kalani was the cashier who must have been amused at our conversation. He showed us different matting examples and we added on a gray mat to have as a border between the glass and the print. Wow. I learned a lot. The upgrades of matting and glass would be about $100 more. I told them that Father Adondee had a budget. My dentist offered to cover the difference, but Kalani said he would take care of it. Thank you so much! The work was supposed to be finished on Monday, April 28, but I got a call on Saturday, April 26 that it was ready! Thank you for finishing early! Went to UPS store they couldn't help me either. I was losing hope and praying bc i didn't want my son to be the only one without a poster or banner (I found out a day before that he was walking and had to scramble finding pictures and designing). I remembered this shop in Kapolei and called. Say helped me and said absolutely he could have it printed within 2 hours. He even emailed me first so I could email back my file to print with instructions. I sent him 3 files for 3- 18x24 poster boards and told him which is the main one I need if he can't print them all. He called me to clarify and said he could print them all and attach them to poster boards within 2 hours. He actually had them ready within 1 hour and cleared counter space for me to attach my sticks to the boards. The posters printed matte, while i would've preferred glossy, but hey, my son had boards! Wonderful customer service, accommodated my last minute order & price was very good too at $36/ea (cheaper than Office Depot). 5 stars all the way! Susan even sent me rendering of both pieces with different font combinations. This was super cool and helpful as a customer. They went above and beyond my expectations for contacting them at the very last minute. Walmart's selection is quite scarce while Fabric Mart is well stocked with the basics, Japanese designs, and Hawaiian prints. Korean material is almost non-existent on Oahu. However, my friend, Donna O., spotted some on Instagram. There's a local vendor named 808 Craft and Gift Fairs. The business page showed some really cute patterns, especially Cony (the white bunny from Line Friends) fabric! I messaged the business and was invited to come over and take a look. I arrived in Pacific Palisades in Pearl City, Oahu in the afternoon. It was perfect timing because the owner, Lauren, was outside and finishing up with the customer before me. She invited me onto her property (with her guard dog) to check out items in her silver colored van. The front passenger seat was filled with face masks made in Korea. There were children's sizes as well as adult sizes. Lauren showed me the quality stitching and the wire nose guards which prevent fogging on eyeglasses. The back of the van held the fabrics. They're currently going for $25 for two yards. Some were linen, some were solids, and some were kawaii prints. I focused on the pandas for my nieces and the sloths for my friend, Dear Daniel... lol! Lauren also pointed out the soft, durable Japanese elastic. It's good for replacing elastic that will eventually stretch out. We don't think that there will be an end to this COVID-19 lifestyle, so, we may as well be prepared and have fresh elastic on hand. Right now, she's offering 100 yards (black or white, 1/8 inch width) for $35. Note: If you bring cash or use venmo, there's a slight discount. Service is outstanding because Lauren is so knowledgeable, personable, and helpful. (It turns out that she married my friend's cousin.) I had a going away gift for a Cub Scout pack member that needed to be done at the last minute. I searched Oahu for engraving shops and came upon Engraving Hawaii. Previously I had passed by it a couple times while walking around the Schofield Exchange, but never looked in before. I walked in and there were two customers in front of me. Nick was helping other customers and told me he would assist me as soon as he could. When it was my turn, I explained what I needed and when I needed it, but Nick explained they had an influx of rush jobs that needed to be completed. He let me know that it was unlikely to be finished by the requested date, and I was ok with it, because I tend to follow the saying, "Poor planning on your part does not necessitate an emergency on mine." That evening, I receive a text message from the shop requesting I proof-read and approve the layout. They got the layout exactly how I requested and I quickly replied it was perfect. I was afraid to think that it might get finished in time, but their quick draft gave me a glimmer of hope that it would be ready in time. The next day I got a message telling me the item was ready. I rushed over to the shop and sure enough it was completed and looked fantastic. Because of Engraving Hawaii, we were able to present the award at the banquet for the departing member! I was so impressed with the friendly and professional service. The team is really customer-focused, and based on what I was hearing from their interactions with the other customers they were going to try everything in their power to get requests just right.
