My review will break down the food experience first; then speak to the unique setting which this restaurant is located... We went for dinner and had a group of (10); on a night that was (not) too busy on a Friday. We had a number of appetizer selections on the table. The mushroom flatbread was descent. The seasonal Farmers Board was ok...certainly not much of a value...for all the more that was on it. The risotto fritters were very good and a bit unique item to try. The Caesar salad...here's where it becomes very disappointing. First off, the salad is way too large for a single person salad. The dressing was tart to sour; and generally had a very underwhelming taste; and not much dressing at all in my salad. Strip steak was a generally lower quality beef quality. I had one; plus the other gentleman seated by me. His was an end cut strip steak, that was a generally lousy cut with fat too much gristle waste, than should be served for $36. A quality beef flavor and well finished cooking/prep technique were absent on this entree selection. The blue cheese crumbles - very mild. I'll cut them slack here...as this can be a personal preference thing (of mine). Chicken and dumplin's. I tried and they were good. BUT, they did have a strong vegetable flavor undertone....which made me think "pot pie" flavor experience; vs dumplings. Short rib pasta. This one was good with a nice mushroom flavor enhancement in the dish. However, I'll again point to the cooking technique on this night and the braising lacked. The beef had much more of a crock pot roast texture and taste. $26 for this dish; ok, sure. But let's get an attention to detail, in how to pull off a braised short rib wine reduction end result (of texture and flavor). Green tomato cake. Uhm....it may be green in color. But get ready for a carrot cake experience....no lol......lol. The Setting. I always will give Johnny Morris major major kuodos...for his unique ability and creation of a setting...indicative to building or setting he is working with. Mr. Morris shows a level of commitment to any project, that is, always impressive. Without going into detail, the interior and exterior of this place, will (not) disappoint. One item on this night, I found quite odd: There is a fireplace in the main dining room. So huge, I could start getting close to fitting a Volkswagen Bug in it. And then for the fire built in on this night: it's like we went to the convenience store...bought one of those bundles of wood they sell....that isn't even hardly any kind of split wood pieces. And sure the smallest of wood pieces to use. And then, we (only) used (3) pieces of this wood...to make a fire....in this centerpiece of room fireplace! Wait...this is what Johnny Morris would've envisioned? Hardly...I've seen way too many of his creations elsewhere. Note to staff: get bigger wood and create a fire effect! read more

I really hate to do this but just had a most disappointing and very expensive experience. Had a large party for my daughter's birthday and I can honestly say NOTHING was good. And I spent a weeks pay on 11 people and had to apologize to my guests because it was so awful. I get the menu offerings are supposed to be upscale, but if it isn't good it doesn't make a difference. You need to offer some down home options too. The venue is beautiful and the service was fine, but the menu and the cooking needs some serious reviewing. read more

Stopped for lunch during a business trip. We always look for local hangouts. Service was great and we got to sit at the windows looking out on the stream and a waterfall. I've been to this restaurant when service and food was excellent and times when it was horrible. I've experienced cases when drink refills are nonexistent and ingredients in your food are inconsistent with what is listed in the menu. My last meal at this restaurant would have been outmatched my a McDonald's Happy Meal. I would advise not ordering a flatbread pizza from this restaurant. The key difference between flatbread pizza and regular pizza lies in the dough. Flatbread uses unleavened dough, meaning it doesn't contain yeast, while regular pizza dough typically contains yeast and is allowed to rise, resulting in a fluffier crust. Flatbreads are generally thinner and crispier, and toppings are often lighter compared to traditional pizzas. I was served a pizza with thick undercooked doughy crust with a couple spoonfuls of blended ingredients smeared over a 14" diameter base with certain key ingredients missing and others added. The atmosphere of this restaurant is wonderful, but the chairs are not comfortable and were most likely chosen for their rustic charm factor. The only consistent wow factor is the ambiance. The one thing I wish this restaurant possessed was consistency, because I have witnessed both excellence and epic failure here. If you order the $36 steak and frites, you may possibly receive chewy strips of steak with soggy fries or the exact opposite that will be absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, it's a roll of the dice which one you'll get. My advice, however, is to try it out because when they get it right, it's wonderful to experience. read more

Sad sad sad they have a new chef that has changed everything. Before the new chef the chicken was a 1/2 of a roasted chicken. Now it's a dry, barely can eat breast, and a drummette. It was not good and the waiter just gave 10 percent off. They have changed the menu and it is limited. My niece ordered a prosciutto and ricotta pizza and there was no prosciutto on the pizza. Since the menu change, they have no steak selection like a ribeye. I love the building, but they have made a bad decision in changing the menu, and the new chef does not know what he is doing. Beautiful place to relax and have some delicious food. We sat by the window and looked about to the water. It was very peaceful. We got the spinach dip and the cornbread as appetizers. Both were awesome!!! For dinner .... I ordered the Catfish. The fish was fresh and not "fishy" tasting at all. The salt-n-vinegar potatoes tasted like I was eating the salt-n-vinegar potato chips !! First thing the location and history are beautiful the history of the building and grounds is a "cool" factor we have wanted to try here the last several years and just didn't make it for various reasons while on vacation. We finally did and meh! The red pepper margarita was the shining star of the evening. The risotto fritters were ok I'll say 3.75 out of 5, the corn muffins were a 3 out of 5, the entrees Shrimp and Grits 3.0 out of 5 the grits and sauce were good, the shrimp rubbery and tough to me anyways they were cooked so..., the short rib stroganoff 3.5out of 5 very rich but very tasty needed about more salt but to each their own. The dessert the peanut butter tart was a 1 out of 5 didn't look like any previous pictures it was peanut butter pie it was hard not frozen nor hot so hard it came of the plate trying to cut a piece with the fork and the fork stood upright in it. Our waiter was nice but extremely forgettable of things it took forever to come get a drink order then even longer to get the drinks, I am not going to say his name, because everyone should get a second chance to improve. Overall rating 3.0 out of 5 with the drinks saving the the 2.5 review Ambiance 3.5 out of 5 Food 3.25out of 5 Drinks 4.5 out of 5 Dessert 1.out of 5 Service 2.75 out of 5 but they had a larger table no excuse for our lack of timely SVC but I get it Price Way high for the lackluster SVC, and small portions IMO, I know people seem to love this place I just didn't and really wanted to like really really wanted to after years of wanting to try it and a day of looking at the menu to pick stuff we would enjoy it just was not as good as it could have been subpar food with bad SVC makes it a bad experience. My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful meal at the mill tonight, the food excellent and the service provided by Easton were absolutely wonderful! While we browsed the shop we overheard a particularly pretentious customer complaining that because her large party had paid for a meal and event room that the noise coming from the busy kitchen was unacceptable. As if her group should not have been bothered by the noise of the other guests being served their meals. I was impressed by the professionalism of Ashley who was listening to the complaint. She allowed the customer to finish her tirade with patience even when this customer suggested that the kitchen was loud intentionally to ruin their event. I let our server know about my dairy allergy but am pretty sure the dressing was full of parmesan, given its granular texture. She tried to convince me it was apple puree. First time ever I could not eat a salad. She was too busy to care or notice that I left it all. $126 for 2. At least the dairy free cheesecake was good. Amazing place owned by Johnny Morris in a reclaimed mill right on the river. The inside is delightfully decorated in "old mill style" and it nearly screams old south comfort food. The wait staff was friendly and the drink menu was creative and "market menu" (more or less the daily specials) was inventive and intriguing. We had the catfish (natch) and the Mill Burger (I think) was out of this world full of.flavor and juicy (no kidding, get this burger).
