Just a really fantastic breakfast experience. It's a local favorite and parking is legitimately challenging at times (uhhhhh, I can usually get street parking), but there's a reason I stop by this place so many mornings on my way out of Los Angeles. You order at the counter. I usually end up getting one of the breakfast meals - and all of them have managed to be both flavorful and fresh - in many ways the opposite of the typical American breakfast. The "bowl of foul", which apparently rhymes if you pronounce foul the Armenian way, is something they advertise a lot on their menu - and for good reason. It's actually one of the least foul breakfasts I've ever had in my life. It's a delicious flavorful bean dip with generous breads on the side to eat with it - as well as a platter of fresh vegetables. Still my favorite food to get here. Also decent was their fatteh, which is cream, yogurt, chickpeas, and a lot of assorted nuts, all dolloped over fried pita bread. Also very good, but I'm just honestly not a huge fan of nuts. It also comes with the vegetable platter which is the perfect combo with the creamy chickpea thing. The food usually takes 10-15 minutes to come out, but that's because they're clearly preparing everything fresh in the back (you can kind of see them do this.) They also have a fountain machine, which is a huge plus to ice addicts like me. Everything is casual, but also very clean and neat. Honestly, it's also a very nice cafe to relax in, do work, talk with friends, etc. etc. This is very much close to the "optimal" place to me when it comes to taking friends out somewhere to reconnect. Anyways, this place is highly recommended for both a wonderful dine-in and dine-out experience. I try to stop by it as often as possible for their breakfast to the point where I can count on my fingers the amount of times I've had breakfast at a place that WASN'T the Old Sassoon Bakery. Honestly, this place stands as a towering achievement of mastering everything that "new hip trendy" food often isn't. It's super affordable, generous portions, super clean, fast service (but you can stay around as long as you want), and the main draw is just the delicious, flavorful, authentic food that very much lives up to all of the hype and more. read more

I've been craving for a good "egg and cheese bread" aka Kachapuri and it turns out there's a well-rated one by my friend's place, and she's never had that nor Lahmajoun, so we went to visit The Old Sasoon Bakery. The place is nice enough, and it wasn't too busy, so we were able to get our order in right away. As it's always is with these two items, it's made-to-order. It took roughly 15 minutes. The Lahmajoun is tasty with mix of Tomato paste, ground beef, garlic, and parsley on thin lavash-style flatbread that's folded over and crispy. The Aleppo Pepper, paprika, and cumin elevate the taste, and it's just delicious. The Kachapuri is pretty good, but I do feel it's missing something I've had before, this extra savoriness. It's still good, especially if you love goat cheese. If anything though, it's more salty than savory. All in all a pretty darn good experience with generous portions and I do want to come to try their Shakshouka. read more

This place is surprisingly very large with seating and easy neighborhood parking in the side streets. What a gem of a place Old Sasoon was! Many moons ago I had the pleasure of helping someone open an Armenian cafe back home. So as soon as I saw the word Sasoon, I had to barrel towards the shop and try not to buy everything on the menu. I loved everything I got to take home today. The lahmajoun wraps, the khachapuri, the baked soujouk pies. My oh my. Every single items were just divine. It made my day. The store has several street parking spots available right in front of the store and in the surrounding areas. There's also plenty of seatings available inside and outside. Many opted to eat outside as it was a nice day. Bathroom is gender neutral and very clean too. So if anyone is wanting some savory breakfast/ early lunch as many related stores are closed Tuesday or doesn't reopen until 1100, this is the place to go! read more

Coming out of the woodwork to give some credit to a local favorite of many. I wish it didn't take me so long to finally think of it for breakfast on a beautiful, sunny, Saturday morning. The two things we ordered were their khachapuri with chorizo and shakshuka. Both of which were the perfect amount of comfort in comfort foods. Shakshukas have always been a favorite of mine and the one here was a good tomato blend with three eggs. As for their famous khachapuri-- it was delicious, savory, filling. We were already thinking of what topping combinations we would want on our next visit. The table was also given a solid set extra wrap, onions, mint and tomato. Didn't even get to the flatbreads, beorags, or baklavas yet because after this morning's stroll over, we hope to make more visits to try more menu items as we go. Thank you Old Sasoon for existing. We ordered several dishes and it was all good but I wouldn't say amazing, to my taste. I'd say my experience was very solid and the first I've tried of its kind with this type of cuisine. There are some fresh and intense flavors that I liked. I have a craving to go again and try a couple of other things. Had the Lahmajune, Khachapuri, and one other but I can't seem to remember. If this is your type of food I can't see how you wouldn't enjoy it. 4.3 stars. I would suggest to family and friends in the mood and will update when I try it again. read more

I have been coming to this bakery for well over a decade. It is such a classic in the East Pasadena area. Recently I drove by and was reminded that it was time to try it again. I noticed the place was full of regulars and had a very vibrant energy. The house coffee they serve is delicious and piping hot. They were out of a couple of things I wanted but some of the fellow customers suggested their favorites and I ended up with a delicious mix of items. I always get some lahna June. I also picked up the stuffed cheese and nasturma bread and stuffed mushroom pastry. I loved how it was full of mushrooms with no filler. I didn't expect it to have the spicy kick that it did. Some red peppers were added in but they were not too spicy in my opinion. I was so happy they had the jingalov hats, flatbread stuffed with a mixture of greens and herbs. I find this item so clean and refreshing. I often go pick them up in Glendale but it's nice to have them in Pasadena as well. The Standout: Basturma and the Soujouk Turnover. Absolutely my favorite item. The Khachapuri was good, don't get me wrong, but it was hard shove in mouth and I am Not a fan of runny eggs. We sat outside overlooking the mountains & we were able to see all the customers coming in and out of this place with their orders. The owner is also very nice . This spot has been opened since 1948 serving traditional Armenian and Georgian food. Khachapuri - my first time trying it and it was very taste. They make it fresh so it can take around 15-20 minutes. It's almost like a flatbread but the middle is more like a pocket of Georgian cheese filling and an egg on top. We thought it was very tasty, decadent and not something we've tried before! Definitely worth trying. Baklava (small) - The baklava set was also extremely delicious! And eating it over 4 days, it never lost its crunch. My favorite was the one with a little pistachio fillings, but all of them were flakey, light and had many layers. read more

May be the best lahmaju I've ever had. The kindest owners. A very welcoming warm environment.

One of my go-to places. They open very early which is one of the reasons I go so often (great for toddler parents). I always get a potato boreg for my daughter and a different one for me (so far my favorite is the Swiss chard and mushroom). I used to live in Glendale and had my fair share of khachapuri, so I was so excited to try this place. For just under $10, the khachapuri was filling and delicious. It's a cheese lovers dream. Imagine tons of cheese with an egg (And your choice of protein for a little extra) and bread...it's kinda like a pizza, but for breakfast! They had other delicious baked goods as well. Public be aware when you buy cheese stuff bread and it looks like almost burnt that means that's yesterday's not fresh. They threw it in the oven and warmed it up and sell it as today's cheese stuff bread. This place is so shading every time I bought something to go brought it home. It's old. My first time trying Armenian/Georgian food and I'm in love! This is a hidden gem that offers fresh and delicious food! They have outdoor and indoor seating and street parking in front. If you order for dine in they bring out the food to you in paper plates and bring out hot sauces. We got the Khachapuri, a spicy cheese Beorag, and a ham and cheese Beorag. Their popular Khachapuri breakfast item was absolutely delicious! This is a Georgian cheese bread and it was loaded with cheese curds and a runny egg. Their bread was so soft and fluffy and easy to eat as you can rip off the bread crust and dip into the cheese. The spicy cheese Beorag is their Armenian stuffed pastry bread. I loved the herbal taste of the spices and it wasn't as spicy as I expected. The ham and cheese Beorag was also really good. I loved the type of cheese they used and the amount of ham in the bread. Pasadena, CA New Discovery here: Zhengyalov hatz, a very large flat thinly rolled dough baked and filled with cooked greens. Old Sasoon just started making this a few months ago and it is fantastic. There is only one other place I know that makes this, and Old Sasoon's version is even better. The dough here is incredibly thin and soft even thinner than a flour tortilla. Highly enjoyed! I also order cheese and herb turnover. All the flat breads are made fresh daily and warmed on request. They used to have a whole case of baklava up front, now it is kept in the back. It looks as if the bakery's focus is more on the savory breads and pastries than the sweet although you can always find a little of both here. These days I prefer the savory at this location. They still have a warm cheese filled pastry with phyllo dough topped with pistachios. This is only served Friday and Saturday. Non metered street parking. read more

The best khachapuri (Georgian Cheese Bread) hands down in the area. Perfect fluffy dough and generous toppings. Start with the bacon cheese and work your way to the more authentic versions. Also some of the best Beorags (boreg, boereg, as spelt differently depending where you go) cheese, meat and veggie Armenian turnovers/empanadas/meat pies. So delicious! Their fillings and dough are the best. You can tell by their local loyal following and how they have continuous take out and eat in (few tables inside and some outdoor tables). Also have a wonderful selection of Baklava that you must take some home with you. Plus Lahmajune flat breads (think flatbread pizza) that are equally as delicious. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait for food but it's well worth it. Everything is made fresh. Lots of large takeout orders as well. Also have sandwiches and drinks too available. The little bakery is also a James beard finalist with an outstanding baker award for the owner. Plus have been featured in Eater LA and on many of the best of lists for food. Definitely worth the trip to. Plus reasonable prices still for top food quality. Plenty of easy street parking as well. When you visit make sure to walk down to Vrej bakery for some sweets too and around on Washington blvd where there are many other Armenian markets in this gem of a neighborhood. read more
