Ya know, I really wish I got the bartenders name. She was a gem of a bartender. We've been a few times at the tables but it was my birthday so we went in right at 3:00 and I ordered a house margarita and a miller lite. She asked if we wanted to order anything. I said I was curious about the seafood chowder. She said it is really good, so I ordered just a cup. Just to try it out. OMG! It was one of the best chowders I have ever had. It had everything wonderful in it. Potatoes, carrots minced, cod chunks, shrimp chunks, salmon chunks, and other vegetables. Also, in the $5.00 cup, it also had a mussel. All I can say is the next time we're there, I'm ordering a bowl as my meal! I've also tried their French onion soup and it's excellent. Our granddaughter orders the chicken tenders. They are so good that I would bet it would be very hard to find a place that served them better. They are SO good. Prices are extremely reasonable. Went to the Bishop Arts (Oak Cliff) location with 2 friends. At 6:30 pm on a Thursday in August 2026. The free next door parking lot was full. Found parking on street. Dark, noisy pub atmosphere inside. All small round counter-height and 4-top square tables inside were occupied. Although they had misters on over the patio tables; it was too hot (100F+) to sit on those outdoor tables. Plenty of small outdoor tables unoccupied at 6:30 pm. No host/hostess was present but a couple of waitresses came to start us with drinks. Draft and other beer, wine and alcohol choices were available. Guinness of course. All 3 of us ordered the fish (cod) and chips plate for our dinners. The 2 piece plate $14, the 3 piece plate $17. The large plank fries ( chips) were great. They were cooked crisp and served hot. Excellent, beer-battered and generous-sized, chunky cod pieces. Best fish n chips ever! I didn't check out the restroom. Trivia night was being played. The microphone was difficult to discern. Plenty of ambient noise from the tables and bar stools made it practically impossible to hear the conversations at our small and intimate table. I will return (with earplugs) perhaps to try their Kuby's sourced German plate. Definitely will be back when I crave an excellent fish n chips. read more

But be prepared for your table to be ignored, drinks to be made incorrectly, and glassware to be dirty. I feel bad because I worked service industry for 10+ years, but after multiple meh to bad experiences, I decided it was time to share. Great spot for a quick drink and small bite! I stopped by Old Monk for a fast drink and snack before an event and enjoyed my time. Service was attentive and friendly! We've come here twice now and The Old Monk is already one of our favorite Bishop Arts restaurants! I'll start off by complimenting our server, Savoiya. She is super-friendly, high energy and and just an overall beautiful person (she recognized us on our 2nd visit too!) The food here is 100% solid pub fare with huge portions at good prices. The sliders (4 of em!) were well balanced with a nice slice of pickle along w the cheese, bacon and beef. The shoestring fries that came w the dish were good as well. But those fries pale in comparison to the steak fries in the fish and chips. Some of those fries had that super crispy texture when the oil gets perfectly absorbed by the potato surface (almost translucent). My description doesn't do it justice unless you know what I'm talking about. The fish is fantastic as well, and the tartar sauce is chock full of capers (that's good). This is a must-order if you come here. The board is also outstanding, and comes with a bratwurst and knockwurst, a couple of nice soft pretzel (rolls?). You also get to select an item from the cheese board list, and some sauerkraut and mustard ensures that the entire board is covered. The sausages are from Kuby's so of course they're delicious. We've always been a fan of The Old Monk! Now we normally stay closer to the Henderson side which is closer for us but we've heard great things about the Bishop location so we decided to check it out. The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was top-notch from start to finish. A special shoutout to the manager, Jane, for being so welcoming and making sure everything was perfect. You can really tell they care about their customers and creating a great atmosphere. So many people seemed to be regulars there which means they're doing everything right to keep people coming back. I personally can't wait to come back and watch the World Cup matches there -- soccer, great food/great service and cold beer! If you have a chance, walk next door to Kilmacs! First visit to The Old Monk was better than expected. The fish & chips were classic, crispy and FRESH! Lightly battered and the chips ("steak" fries) were sooo crispy, fresh and perfect. A very enjoyable dish. The spicy chicken sandwich was also tasty. Another thing was that they have French Onion soup at the pub...and it was VERY good. A+ Food and service. To me, The Londoner had the best fish and chips. No more. The Londoner needs to be closed (by the health department ). The new sheriff in town is The Old Monk. The Old Monk has been around for years, but they just opened a new place in oak cliff. Same lack of decent parking. But that's canceled out by the excellent food and service. They hire the most polite and attentive staff that you'll meet. The menu is simple. I am a fan of the Fish and Chips. It's superb. I get the 3 piece. I'm a big guy, but I have never been able to finish more than 2.25 pieces of a 3 piece fish and chips. But I get it anyway. This is a great restaurant. They do everything perfect. Y'all I have love for the old monk, I have held many a birthdays, frequented happy hours, and even used it as a first date spot when I was younger. Needless to say I have been going to the original one up north for over a decade, have been to this new location more times than I can count all with experiences that aligned with my love of the original location. THEN last night my partner and I were going for a late dinner and my goodness I am in disbelief with the food quality. Completely overcooked and greasy, my partner took a bite and left it 0/10 2.Pretzels what the heck is going on with the cheese?!? It looked watered down and tasted of nothingness. My wife and I went in to have dinner and ordered the fish and chips. The server was Real nonchalant and not into it. . Then we get our food and the fish was overcooked and extremely greasy. Dry greasy overcooked fish and breading. The peace my wife did try and eat she had to take a napkin and roll the fish around in to get it to where it was even edible. We live right down the street from there and had been wanting to go and try them out. It's usually pretty busy, but we picked a time when they were not. So we figured the food and service would be a little more up to par. We would have said something to the server, but by the way she was disengaged was a turnoff. We paid and left. Love coming here for happy hour which is Monday through Friday 3-7 PM. Its casual atmosphere is the perfect spot to grab drinks after a long day at work! There is a parking lot immediately adjacent to it but it is small but I usually am able to find street parking without issue if the lot is full. Cocktails are only $7 during happy hour and are delicious and not to sweet! My favorite drink orders are the mezcal mangito and the pineapple smash. There are also plenty of food options but those are not included in the happy hour. I got the Belgium Style Steamed Mussels. It tasted fine but nothing special. Service was slow when we came here for Friday evening but our server was so sweet and gave great drink recommendations! A most glorious addition to the Bishop Arts area! The only aspect that Old Monk will soon find out to be to their detriment is the fact they don't allow children in past 6pm. Oak Cliff is incredibly family-centric. A much different area and culture than their other location by SMU. This location will suffer a bit due to that rule but we're hopeful they will see that. Outside of that the atmosphere is comfortable and is a near copy of their location off of Henderson which we love. The food and portions is that of a king's feast! Cheers to Old Monk.
