The bartender, Austin (I'm pretty sure that's his real name and not just what he tells customers), has the patience of a saint and the sarcasm of a man who's been asked "Do you have anything like Guinness but less dark?" one too many times. Highlights: The fish & chips were so good I briefly considered converting to Catholicism just so I could thank God properly. The bathroom graffiti is poetic. "Roses are red, violets are blue, I came for a piss and met half the crew." - actual quote. Then you've got Hannah, who's basically the pub's chaos coordinator. She's got blonde hair that could guide ships in a fog and a laugh that echoes like a banshee having a great time. Don't sleep on Wes - He'll nod once, slide you your drink, and if you're lucky, mutter something profound like "Life's short, drink good stout." Then he disappears to polish glasses like he's auditioning for a monastery. Absolute mystery man, 10/10 enigma. And rounding out the crew is Paige, the wildcard. She's got stories that start with "Back in then..." and end with police chases, lost sheep, and at least one exploding still. She'll flirt with your grandma, roast your ex in three sentences or less. There is also this Asian guy that looks like a confused troll with blonde hair. He lives up to the saying once you go Asian it's amasian. Can't forget the blonde girl that's going through the Dallas legacy transition of bottle service to real estate. Shes as good at serving as she is selling real estate. These people run the bar like a well-oiled dysfunctional family. They banter with each other louder than the jukebox, remember birthdays you forgot you told them, and have an unspoken code: if you're having a rough night, they'll slide you a free shot and pretend it was a mistake. It was in fact the best fish and chips I've had so far in Dallas! I was very impressed with the portion size for the two piece order. The filets were thick with the perfect amount of fried batter. The chips were a bit plain, could use more salt but definitely an authentic style. And the tartar sauce paired well with both items. I also tried the Texas Ice Pick which was not too strong but tasted great. Came here right around opening on a Wednesday afternoon during happy hour. One of my favorite places in Dallas is The Old Monk. This is a very chill place and I especially recommend coming here in the fall/winter but it's so perfect year round. It's an Irish pub but the food is much more than pub fare. I usually come for dinner but this time I tried their brunch. It was very delicious! I did the chicken and biscuits and gravy and my kind was blown. The sausage gravy was so good, I was dipping every bite in it. Finally, the service was great. One of my favorite places to visit is this restaurant. I went with friends for brunch, and our server was fantastic. I ordered the fish and chips, which truly live up to the claim of being the best in town. They are very filling and delicious, and their homemade tartar sauce is on point. Me and my family went to the old monk in Oak Cliff. We got there about 645 on a Thursday. We ordered our drinks and then the waitress comes back and says that because my kids are under 21 they can't serve us. I was under the impression that this was a restaurant, not a night club after 6PM. We have been there before and the food is good, but to deny a service after 6 PM on a Thursday seems kind of ridiculous. The good part is we got to go to Nova down the street and the food was amazing and they welcome us in. I guess they're not a nightclub. read more

I went here with some friends for brunch one weekend. It is right on Henderson Ave so parking is a little slim but we took an Uber so it was fine. I got the Chicken, Biscuits & Gravy $15.00 which was very tasty, the gravy was especially flavorful. The breading on the chicken did not stick to the meat but it had good seasoning and still tasted good. There were quite a few flies inside which was quite annoying/concerning. It was a beautiful day out but our party size could not fit at any of the tables outside. The service was okay, when she was around it was alright but sometimes she would disappear for a bit. They really need to work on pre-bussing as the table was so small and the dishes took up so much space. The inside is small but has plenty of outdoor seating to accommodate larger parties. The servers are very friendly and attentive. They constantly check up on you to ensure all is going well. They have a nice drink selection and their fish and chips is arguably one of the best in Dallas. The fish and chips are always fresh with the two piece normally being more than enough for me. If really hungry, go for the three piece! If looking for an appetizer they have plenty of options. The fried mushrooms are amazing, with an accompanying cilantro sauce that compliments them nicely. Kudos to the staff who created a Halloween extravaganza. Pro tip: Even though The Old Monk is a pub with a large selection of beer, the bartenders are great and make solid classic cocktails. The pub food is also delicious and there is always a fun and lively scene. I really enjoyed this pub for not only its beer but also its food and late night pub vibes. This was a random lucky find that we stumbled across while we were in the nearby area. There is both outdoor and indoor seating, with a large beer menu and plenty of food options to accompany the drinks. I got a classic Hoegaarden to go with the Belgian style steamed mussels. The mussels were good, but on the smaller side. I also tried a bite of the soft baked pretzel, which was surprisingly super yummy and had a great texture. Service: on the hands off side of ideal, acceptable if you don't mind asking your waitress for whatever you need when she walks by your table. Food: One of the best fish and chips in town (still). I tried onion soup today, and it was good, light on cheese with good flavor. (my fave in town is at The Heights, cheesy, flavorful, and comforting). Ambiance: nice dark europub feel, packed full of local East Dallasites (a good thing). It was chilly inside today, until they closed the doors to the closed in porch that runs along the southwest edge of the structure. They were fresh in ample wine sauce served with skinny frites. I loved the fries albeit I was longing for a bit of a larger portion. My sister also ordered the mussels (they told me it was her regular order) and brother-in-law ordered the burger that looked, and according to him, tasted delicious. My brother-law's recommendation for my stout beer was a good one and it paired well with my dinner. Our server was delightful. She was busy but attentive and was engaging. We came here last night for some drinks and light bites. I really wished we were more hungry because I saw people ordering huge burgers. The bartenders were so friendly! Took them a min to make our drinks ($10 each for the pineapple and pepper smash) and they were on the stronger side. It was slightly loud as a heads up, but I loved the dim lights. The food portions here are huge! I got the stew ($9) and it was so filling. If it had a touch of seasoning it'd be a go to. The pretzel ($8) was so fluffy and they give you 2 dipping sauces. I come to the Old Monk often. Mainly for their drinks. The crowd is friendly with many regulars and the bartenders are very well crafted with their drinks and service. They have really unique and well made cocktails such as the pepper smash. Not the cheapest in Dallas but not the most expensive for a made to order cocktail. Around $11-$13 a cocktail. Food is good. I will eat there if I am hungry but I do not go for the purpose of eating. They have burgers, sandwiches, soups, ect. They also have a few German dishes such as a stew, pretzel, bratwurst, ect. While many go for the burgers, I actually think their salads stand out the most. They are very well dressed and fresh. I especially like the warm goat cheese salad. Inside remains steadily busy. However, Thurs-Sat is when it gets super crazy and you will not be able to get a seat. It is also very very dark inside. There are 2 tvs for football lovers. There is also outside sitting. I wish I could give this place zero stars. I came here with some friends for a good time, but instead, I got humiliated by one of the waitresses. Out of nowhere, she came up to me and started mocking me for wearing a backwards hat. For no reason at all, she decided to comment on my appearance and make fun of me to my face, as if I was there for her entertainment. It was completely unprovoked, and honestly, it ruined my entire experience. I go to bars to relax and have fun, not to be insulted by the staff.
