While staying in Gainesville for a brief trip, we found The Neu Ranch House here on Yelp, we were staying at the Hampton Inn on 35, and this was just a few minutes away, and worth the short drive into town. We didn't even know it was a buffet, and might have accidentally skipped this if we had, my hubs is on crutches so buffets are not easy. Well let me just tell you, from the minute we walked in and was greeted by the adorable blonde at the front with her big friendly smile, showing her cute braces, till we left, barely able to walk; we were so full, we really enjoyed our experience. The food is hot, fresh, and the ultimate Texas fare, I really loved the fried catfish, and wish I had a bigger stomach, cuz I could only try little bites of the various options, I liked everything! They also have delicious cobblers, the strawberry cobbler was a show stopper! They also have a menu, so if buffets aren't your jam, you're in luck! Oh, if buffets have been off your list since C-19, you will be happy to know this one is set up in a very hygiene. Way where it's supervised, no creepy, crazy fingers in any of their food! We are on the road and passing through Gainsville Tx. and stopped for lunch. We had the buffet. The restaurant was not busy and the service was excellent. Basically it is get your plate and troop the line of food. The choices were aplenty. I can't list all of them here do I'll comment on the ones I ate. The salad was fresh with several toppings and dressings. The French dressing was great. The coleslaw was average but I'm kinda picky about coleslaw. The fried catfish was the best I've eaten in many years. The ribs were really good. The meat did slide off of the bone. The chicken legs were very well done and the fried okra was tasty but not very hot. The cherry cobbler was fresh, hot and a delight. We will be returning to Texas tomorrow evening and plan on trying them again. The price was reasonable and the service was really good. read more

My husband & I just aren't for the first time & I have to say we were VERY pleasantly surprised!! The food was delicious & the service was beyond amazing!! Josh was very attentive & had the most positive attitude I've ever seen out of a server. I found a hair in my food & Josh went & got me a new plate without even a single thought & then gave us a discount for the trouble & apologized. The Neu Ranch House still has the same great food, just under a different name. We like to go there after church about once a month. It is in Gainesville, about 32 miles north of Krum. The buffet has all you can eat, with roast beef, pork chops, brisket, chicken, ribs, and meatloaf, all the sides, including baked potato. And they also have cobbler and ice ream for dessert. Meh. We had the buffet. The food was generally very over cooked/ too long on the hot bar. The red meat was extremely dry even with all the sauce. The chicken was better (the irony) but still nothing special. The mashed potatoes tasted of plastic? Maybe it was the taste of the fridge, I don't know. I added a star just for the pea salad. It was really good. Big fat marrow peas and not too much dressing. The rest of the salad bar was really sad. Iceberg mix for lettuce, cheese, red onions and diced pickles. That's it. I'm not sure what my first impression of this place is, or if I will be back to give it another chance. The first thing I noticed after walking through the door was what a mess the dining area was. There was trash, food, and a very large spill of sauce of some kind all over the floor. The restrooms were pretty bad as well with clogged, I flushed toilets and trash everywhere. We almost turned around and left right then, but we were super hungry after a weekend in 110* temps. So, we braved the buffet line. I will say that the variety of the food on the line was good. Catfish, ribs, sausage, turkey, even some enchiladas, and lots of sides to choose from. I tried to get a little bite of everything so I could report on the food accurately and know if there was anything I needed to try twice. ;) So, here's the skinny on the food: The catfish was crispy and tasty, but some of my pieces were undercooked. The ribs were good but a bit dry. Sausage...no. Turkey was like going back in time to my grade school cafeteria, but somehow sort of satisfyingly good. The beef stew was good and full of flavor but pretty salty. Enchiladas? Just..don't. Steak was tender and pretty good. The mashed potatoes with the turkey gravy were my favorite thing, but I should mention that not every dish on the line had it's own serving utensil. I had to steal the turkey gravy with the spoon I had on my tray. Overall, the food was decent but nothing to write home about. The desserts were actually better than the entrees. There was peach, apricot and cherry cobbler, brownies and bread pudding. There was also soft serve ice cream and that was really good on top of the cobblers. Upside: our server Valerie was super friendly and attentive. I actually gave an extra star just on her wonderful service alone. We may try to give this place one more try - not sure if everything was so discombobulated and messy because they had just had a rush, or if it's like that all the time. Dirty, old, dried out food, sticky, just plain gross. By far the worst meal I have ever had, we walked out after eating part of our food. Cash register girl was on the phone when we arrived and ignored us, finally someone in sleep pants and slippers ( almost bare feet) came up and said" sit where you want " we chose the cleanest dirty table and sit down. As we went through the Buffett we had to ask several times to ask what is that? Some of the food had turned a putrid grey color. I asked the cook/chef/ guy that was mixing something up where the ribs were since it claimed to be a BBQ restaurant. A pan of reddish grease with some fat chunks floating in it. My go to place when I want variety. Usually food is ok but last few times it has been rather lacking. Gordon Ramsey of Kitchen Nightmares needs to come whip this place into shape. Today was the worst. I happened to go during their senior discount time and I don't know if this is why it was so bad or just declining in general. The toast was so hard it was crunchy. Fish was cold and chewy; ribs dry, cold and chewy, bread pudding had no flavor. Overall food was bad. The guy behind buffet line was grumpy looking. 4.5 stars this is the ultimate country buffet. Crispy fried catfish, bbq ribs, tender brisket, sausage, ham, chicken and fried shrimp-those are from the best to the 'okay'. The chicken was average, the shrimp was overcooked and tough-thus the loss of 1/2 a star. But you don't go here for the shrimp, you go for the catfish and bbq! The sides are fresh crispy salad, green tomato relish, numerous peppers, the typical pea and potato salads. Corn cobbettes soaked in butter and crispy fried okra and squash. Standouts include the pinto beans and the hot homemade cobblers. Your choice of cherry, apple and peach. Nothing was bad and you won't leave hungry. Our total bill for lunch was $22.00 for 2 adults and one senior-2 sweet teas and one water. I hate leaving a bad review for a restaurant. I know that sometimes you can just catch a place, kitchen or server on a bad night. Other times, expectations may simply be too high. But, in this case, it was some food poisoning. Now, granted, food poisoning can also be a one-time incident, but for me, that's always a one-and-done situation. The good things are that the portions are huge, and our waitress, Maddie, was terrific. But, we ordered off the menu but I'm almost positive the ribs were from the buffet -- what I wanted to avoid. My hunch is that they had been sitting out way too long and the temperature fell between 40 and 140, one reason I always avoid buffets. (The other reason is that experience has taught me that sneeze guards are not an effective barrier to dirty hands, not to mention coughs or sneezes when people stick their heads under them.) Both my wife and I were sick well into the night. It's clear from all the five-star reviews that other folks haven't been as unlucky, and for that, I'm thankful. But, I'd strongly recommend that the owner keeps a closer eye on the food temperatures on the steam table. For us, the food poisoning just meant a night of pain, discomfort and thoughts of sleeping in the bathtub; for others, it can lead to hospitalization and even death. read more

Fried fish - well, it likely WAS fresh about 2, because by the time we got there at 9 this evening, it was ready to be called hardtack!! I have NEVER seen a buffet line where the food was allowed to sit and dry out so badly! The sausage was just barely edible. And, yes - we DID ask for fresher catfish. It WAS edible - but nothing I'd ever call anything but "edible". And the banana pudding......okay, there WERE some slices of banana's, and some vanilla wafers mixed into what I'm pretty sure was the cheapest banana pudding they could find. My family comes in quite often. There buffet is pretty good, you will definitely leave full. The thing that truly keeps us coming back is the service. You will not meet a better group of people who understand what good friendly country service is all about. When you walk in the young ladies at the front are all smiles and understand the need of patience with elderly people. The line cooks are nice and will accommodate anything you ask to have refilled or recooked and the ladies on the floor keep your tea and soda full.
