Today I went to Smokehouse Barbecue in Lindsey Texas. And I was not disappointed. I had a grilled Chicken sandwich and onion rings. There was so much food I couldn't eat it all. My husband had the barbecue plate with brisket. And he said it was great. The service was great. And I love the restaurants nostalgic look. Everything was wonderful. Tried this place based on reviews of their bbq. Terribly disappointing. The sides were good, service was ok. I had the brisket and German sausage. The brisket was dry, tasteless, and cold. Way over cooked and dry to the point it would break apart in pieces. I noticed that a lady at a table next to mine, had also finished her meal and left the brisket on her plate. The German sausage, was also served cold, and was pretty bad. The bbq sauce they gave me was warmer than the meat. No sign of a smoke ring on the brisket or firewood at the place, so I'm assuming their "bbq" isn't wood smoked. I will say some of the other food I saw served, looked pretty good. But, their bbq needs a serious overhaul. read more

I hadn't eaten at the Smokehouse in many years. I only had fond memories of the amazing BBQ and the charming decor. Time sure changes things. While the decor hasn't changed much the food sure has. We had the Captain's Plate with Ribs, brisket, german sausage and ham. The German sausage was the best thing on the plate and had great flavor. The ribs and the brisket were dry and didn't have much flavor. The ham tasted like it was a processed ham off the grocery store shelf. The cole slaw was very average but the okra was pretty good. We hadn't been to The Smokehouse since the 1990s and found ourselves passing thru Lindsay at lunchtime. The menu showed a child/senior citizen plate so being people of a certain age we ordered that. My wife ordered smoked turkey and I went with ribs. We both chose potato salad as our side. Both meats were good and potato salad was very tasty. The barbecue sauce had a noticeable tomato taste, and the beans were undercooked and could use more seasoning. I appreciated the generous portion of Texas-sized toast. We often eat here, the food, service and atmosphere are always good. Amanda is always our waitress, she has seen our kids grow up and now watching as our family grows. She can pretty much tell you what we want when we walk in the door. The owner's children have grown up, got families of their own and work in the family business. They always make it a point to speak to us when we are there. Kevin is the night manager, he is always kind and makes sure all is good. We enjoy the sausage, chicken fried steak and pepperoni pizza. I have been to smoke house many times,the staff are always very nice and pleasant that along with the atmosphere in the place just feels comfortable like your at a family members house or something. My problem is the BBQ,I have tried all the BBQ and it's just not texas worthy bbq,it is like something I would get up in New York and the German sausage for some reason tastes like latex. Three people in our group ordered chicken fried steak. All three looked like they put the egg batter on and forgot the flour and forgot to fry it. It was covered in gravy so it wasn't noticeable upon arrival. I cut into mine and immediately noticed. I asked the other 2 if theirs was the same way and they were. It was absolutely disgusting. Waitress acted like she didn't know what we were talking about when we showed her our food. Like it was perfectly normal. We won't ever be back. Place needs a health/food inspection. Not sure why this place is rated so high. First of all they have the meat labeled as "sliced beef" and not the usual "sliced brisket". That should have been my first sign. Stopped in at 3:30 pm on a Sunday afternoon while passing through town. The service was good and the waitress was friendly. We all ordered a 2-meat combo plate and none of our meat was hot. It wasn't cold like from a refrigerator, but lukewarm at best. I asked for my meat to be heated. Only the brisket was heated, which arrived far from hot, but with that kind of funky microwaved brisket taste (which is why the other 2 at my table opted not to have their meat heated). The sausage didn't get reheated, but that was probably a blessing in disguise. I'm guessing none of it was smoked today. They need to do a better job of figuring out how to keep it hot or warm it adequately before serving. The sides were good. The guy checking us out asked how the food was and I said, "if you really want to know the truth, none of the meat was hot," and he seemed like he didn't know what to say. I've been coming here off an on probably around 30 years now. It is a family favorite restaurant. It had been a while since I'd stopped by on this recent visit, and nostalgia for this place definitely washed over me as I came in and saw the decor is still exactly the same as it has been the last 30 years. It was exceptionally clean due to COVID precautions, so don't think it is old and dirty! It is on the back side of a Sonic looking drive in building, so it may not be what you're expecting to see when you pull up. Have no fear, delicious BBQ is inside! I had my usual ribs, sausage, and fried okra. Others enjoyed the brisket, onion rings, and Texas toast. If none of that is appealing to you, they also make pizzas. I had a slice of pie for dessert and it wasn't as good as I remembered it being on earlier visits, but I still managed to finish it. Have been going to the Smokehouse for almost 30 years and my hubby for more than that. We agree that the most recent visit was one of the best. And I don't think we've ever had a bad experience. But it's definitely time for a review that is long overdue. I'm not a big barbeque person but I always look forward to a Smokehouse visit. Once I discovered the Texas toast and gravy it became part of each order as I tried different main dish menu items. The fried shrimp is very crispy and a nice option for those not in the mood for bbq. I also recommend the combo with catfish. But this last trip I tried the smoked turkey and it was outstanding - tender and juicy with excellent smoked flavor. Yum. This will be my new go-to order. And for any fellow city folks, Smokehouse has real french fries and are a must order. Those from around this area don't realize how good they have it and how hard it is to find restaurants in the city that serve real potatoes. I also recommend the onion rings, green beans and fried okra. Hubby, who grew up in the area, always gets a sliced beef sandwich and fries. The order of fries would be enough to share for most folks, but I haven't been able to convince him of that yet. Especially after I taught him about dunking the fries in Smokehouse gravy. Doh! I wouldn't recommend the salads as they're mainly just iceberg with unremarkable dressings. The main negative about Smokehouse was having to walk through the bar area and smoking section to get to the nonsmoking area. But we saw a sign with this BREAKING NEWS: * Effective 12/1/15 the Smokehouse will be smoke-free! * So this 4.5 review will probably become a 5 star review with my first visit under this new policy. I took my wife and son over to Lindsay to eat at the Smokehouse today. I don't actually know how long the restaurant has been there. But I'm 52 and I've been going for as long as I can remember. I had a large German sausage plate with fries and onion rings(as I always do). My wife had a combination plate with ribs, chopped beef, potato salad and a side salad. My son is 15 and eats everything in sight. He had the Captains platter with cole slaw and beans. Everything was hot, fresh, perfect, and delicious. I have never once been disappointed and I highly recommend that German sausage to anyone who will listen. If I found myself in a situation where I had to request a last meal, this would be it. Me and my family have been going here over 40 years. I go everytime I'm in the area..today I was met at the door i had just come from the dr with a compound sprained ankle that was wrapped in a bandage and covered with a thick sock. I was met at the door by the owner that said i could not come in without shoes..he was hateful and condescending. Let it be known they do not serve handicap.
