I've always ignored them, but what caught my eye this time was their toy selection in the window. I needed to buy a quick gift for a friend's kid, and they have stuffed animals galore. I wish this was my local pharmacy. Not only do they poop on Duane Reade when it comes to customer service, but I also appreciate their focused and curated selection of products. Obviously, this small shop doesn't have 34 different kinds of toothpaste to choose from, but I really only need one or two good ones. And, if this sort of thing matters to you, the Modern Chemist even carries their own exclusive line of men's skincare from Triumph & Disaster. Personally, I can't spend $50 on moisturizer (my looks aren't good enough to drop that much cash on preserving them), but the quality is here. And they've got Jack Black, and other more common brands if you have a common face like I do. Basically, it's a nice place run by nice people, and whenever I can help it, I'll spend my money with them rather than some Walgreens somewhere. read more

The best service I've ever had at a pharmacy! The head owner Carlos recognizes me every time and remembers my name. They also work to give the most affordable prices to clients for their medication. Great selection of high-end skincare, hair care, candles (Boy Smells!!) as well as classic 'pharmacy items' (e.g. nail clippers, vitamins, bandaids). I've been into this location a few times over the last year and not sure what the yellow haired woman behind the counter's issue is, but what a curmudgeon! Each time (4 times) I've been in here, she is unhelpful as best, and rude and snotty at worst. Had a package to pick up here since they operate as a UPS access point and wanted to also buy some probiotics. After my exchange with the unpleasant yellow haired woman behind the counter, I decided I'd rather walk to another store to purchase my other items since this business apparently does not want mine. The Modern Chemist has become an essential part of my life in Park Slope, and I am happy to have them around. First things first, I have to mention how friggin' nice the guy who runs this place is. He goes above and beyond for his customers (he is also the pharmacist, and fills anything you're looking for on the spot if he can). I absolutely love being able to support a local business when they are run by genuinely nice people OK moving on, can we all agree that shipping companies suck (looking at you Fedex and UPS). The Chemist makes dealing with these guys a little easier by being more than willing to accept packages that the companies wouldn't otherwise leave. I had some shoe cream coming in from London last week, and the DHL guy called me to tell me I was out of luck, but I said to just head to the chemist and drop off there, which was a huge win for me (and frankly for DHL, they didn't have to pay their employee to come back again the next day). So yeah, that is about it. If you a local, don't waste your time with Duane Reade (cough ** Walgreens ** cough), instead, come support a local business run by some amazing folks. read more

This place is charming and efficient: the pharmacist is friendly and actually wants to help you. There are high end products. Not a big negative review person. However, regarding my visit to the Modern Chemist....I live about three blocks away from it and walk by it almost every day since it opened. Figured it was too pricey for my budget. Well, last Monday, February 12th around 5/530 pm, I did stop by en route home to buy some regular stomach medicine. I came in, and the young woman behind the counter was on the phone. No prob at that point. I found what I needed and walked up to the counter to pay. She was still on the phone. No problem, I waited...then waited...then waited, until it was very clear that this young woman, who HAD seen me, was not getting off her phone. Even to acknowledge my presence and say, "hold on I'll be with you in a minute." Customer Service 101. Frustrated that she didn't want to make a sale to a customer in front of her face, I left. As I did, a young man with dark framed glasses, who also looked like he worked here, walked in also on his phone, saw me and said nothing. I was visiting Brooklyn ( from Toronto, Canada) for one week and everything that could go wrong with my health unexpectedly did! Par & his partner (I didn't catch her name but she was also delightful) went out of their way to ensure I got the meds I needed and suggested great non-prescription alternatives. Carlos is the best pharmacist I have ever met. When I call for a refill, he knows it's me right away over the phone, and he knows what meds I need refilled before I do! I have never received better service at a pharmacy (hurrah for no longer being stuck with Duane Reade or Target!). Another perk of this pharmacy is that they compound certain meds so that it's cheaper for the patient. I used to spend $60 on one of my meds and now it's $40 thanks to Carlos. The store part of the pharmacy is adorable. It's a little expensive, but they have stuff that is nice and actually useful. They have a great selection of body products and child/baby products. Bottom line: Definitely worth moving your prescriptions here (and Carlos makes the rx move so easy!) read more

Wow what a great pharmacy. They take real time to talk with you about your meds and work with your insurance. Carlos (owner and head pharmacist) is amazing and I trust him handling all of my many meds. When I first went in he wasn't a part of my plan (which is a common problem for many people) but when I explained my situation he went through the hassle of signing up his pharmacy with my plan!! I'm currently waiting for a heart transplant and he is also helping me make my body more balanced with supplements but always will check with my doctors first. I've been on heart meds my whole life and I've never had pharamcy care that much to sign onto my plan!! Most places would turn me down and say sorry we don't take it go to CVS but Carlos understood that's not what's best for my health. I've had too many times big places mess up my meds. Now I can't wait for my sixteen year old son to come back from camp. I'm excited to get him there since he needs special meds for his acne. The fact your dealing with the owner Carlos is epic because he understands customer service and knows treat someone with respect and he'll have my whole family going there for life. PS: even if you don't need meds it's a beautiful store with very high end beauty products and he always gives out testers. Plus they order anything that they don't carry without charging u extra. It's a pharmacy, health food store, and hard to find best of the best beauty products with out the clutter and big size of most places. It's also a great place to pop in and grab a gift when you've waited last minute like I do... I've purchased baby shower gifts, home warmer gifts and birthday gifts. However today when I was walking my dog I just grabbed a snack bar and water. This independently-owned pharmacy provides the best service I have ever had at a pharmacy! Seriously, the service I received here inspired me to join Yelp. My wife and I moved to Brooklyn from out-of-state, and we have several prescriptions, including two Schedule II (highly-regulated) drugs, and a couple of less common drugs. They had all my prescriptions transferred, had contacted my physician and received updated prescriptions for those that were more than 30 days old, and got the drugs in the store and ready for pickup in less than 24 hours. Plus, they did it with a smile. And, they did it without me ever having to wait in line. They are open 7 days per week. They allow me to bring my dogs into the store when they happen to be with me. And, they also serve as a UPS access point, so I can also bring them my Amazon returns. I love supporting local businesses! Particularly when they are as well-run as this one is. Have a super weird and hard-to-fill prescription for cough syrup for my dog (sizzurp, really, but he's not an addict) and I called SIX pharmacies today looking for a supply. Not only did no pharmacy in Park Slope have it, but my inquiry was met with a curt "No, we don't have that." End of story, I guess. Then I called Modern Chemist and the pharm tech looked it up, said they didn't have it, and then offered to place me on hold and call the 7th Ave location to see if it's available there. It was. I have been a customer at The Modern Chemist on 7th Ave. for a good five years. Rather quickly, when I stopped in, my wife and me became diehard fans of the owner, Carlos. Forgive my candor, but this might actually make you trust this review less, but I must be honest...Over the years, Carlos has become a friend. He puts his heart and soul into what he does, and always offers a receptive ear, for whatever ails us! He's been there for us through thick and thin, asks how we are doing, how the medicine he dispensed has been working, he hashes out prescription issues without batting an eye...He's an all-star. (And he always hires good people, too, so on the rare occasion he's not in, we are taken care of in fine fashion.) We live ten blocks away from his shop, but we wouldn't dream of going anywhere else! Here's the deal: the owner is a very hard working man. I fly in from out of state and was not an easy customer since I had out of state insurance. The owner bends over backwards to take care of me and my needs, despite it being a bit more complicated. I'm not an easy customer as I always ask for prices, transfers, etc. Doesn't help that my prescriptions and doctors are all out of state too. The owner always says no worries he'll take care of it. I always brings my business here because this neighborhood needs more establishments like this that go above and beyond. read more

This place is amazing! I have lived in Brooklyn for 6 weeks and had two amazing experiences with "The Modern Chemist". The first time, I left my wallet at home after spilling my kids antibiotics and needing to get a refill ASAP. I had two kids with me (one sick), it was pouring rain, and I left my wallet at home. They just let me take the medication, it was a true blessing to not have to go back home and cart the kids in the house and back out again. Today, during a big storm, my son came down with a fever and I needed Tylenol. I called and they were about to close but offered to stay until I could walk down there to pick it up. The family that owns and operates this pharmacy is warm, friendly and super enthusiastic about what they're doing. I recently switched insurance providers and the pharmacists (an adorable betrothed couple) were great advocates in helping me to get my insurance up and running. They also helped me to get generic versions of my meds so as to save me on cost. I'm so glad to have this spot as both my local pharmacy and my UPS package pick-up point. I don't come here regularly for drugs, but service has been great when I have. They have a ton of high-end skincare products and I just picked up some Supergoop! sunscreen for the same price as Sephora. They also have some nice potential gift items (bought a locally made candle as part of a Secret Santa exchange I was running late to) and lots of healthy snacks. This is a very nice addition to the neighborhood. On the way back from my daughter's school, I happened to cross it and went in. Loved the vibe of the front store and the pharmacy. Not your average pharmacy. It had a lot of character to it. Great decor with a cozy feel to it. Loved the candle (local Brooklyn made candles sold here) burning on the front counter (I love candles :-)) The front store had some great products. I was able to pickup a couple of cool gifts for friends that I needed to buy. The pharmacist in the store was Par, he was very friendly and went out of the way to make a note of the supplement that I was looking for and offered to have it ordered for me and at the store the next morning. The entire experience was great. Very personalized and professional at the same time. While I was browsing the shelves, I heard Par's interaction with another customer and thought to myself that this is the kind of pharmacy where I want to be bringing by prescriptions to. Now this is a neighborhood pharmacy!! That one our relatives told us existed back in the day! Last month I found out that Walgreens/Duane Reade would not accept my insurance. I was extremely bummed out as it was right next to my train stop. I had to go to Park Slope that day and remembered that my friend had a good experience with The Modern Chemist. I just happened to be across the street from the one on Sackett and 4th ave. I spoke to the pharmacist and she took my information and filled my prescription. It was honestly one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had! I was so impressed with the turn around. The space is extremely clean and welcoming. You could also find great gifts that you would not be able to find at other pharmacies or even Target! Their skin and hair care selection is incredible. Good pharmacy, prices are fair and they're very modern. Was surprised when I had to swipe my debit card on an iPad. Went in there for a solution for my muscle aches, which I've been getting from working out with dumbbells and cardio.
