My favorite pizza place in Seattle. Fantastic real Neapolitan pizza, and a great selection of high quality beer. Be warned though: If you're expecting typical American pizza, aka a giant, cheap circle of bread piled with greasy salty things, then you may be disappointed. If you've been to Italy and were forever spoiled by real pizza, this may satisfy your craving. This pizza is smaller. The excellent fresh dough is cooked just right. It's slightly charred and crispy on the outside, but still moist on the inside. The ingredients are high quality, fresh, and used sparingly so that you can actually taste the different flavors. Really good stuff. I like it better than Serious Pie and Tutta Bella, my previous favorites. read more

I was really disappointed in the food here :( We ordered the sausage pizza. The cheese was so thick and strong (I believe it was fontina?) that we ended up picking it off. The crust was also pretty burnt. For similar pizza, I would definitely go to Delancey or Via Tribunali instead. If you are looking for fantastic wood fired pizza or a great beer list, this is your spot! The pizza has an excellent chewy crust that provides a great canvas for the toppings. It has a slight garlic flavor that forces you to finish the bones. I dare you not to eat all of it. The sauce is perfectly balanced and allows the natural acidity and sweetness of the tomatoes to shine. I recommend the pizza with marinated mushrooms, add the pancetta. Additionally, the Caesar is vegetarian and still completely delicious. The beer list will continue to evolve but the owner assured me they will always have cider for gluten free diets, Rainier for light wallets, and some local options for those who are local centric. Best beer selection I've seen in a pizza place, tons of craft beer and staff that will help you pair the best beer to your taste buds and the pizza selection. They also have an extensive listing of fine bottled beers. The pizzas I sampled (mushroom, sausage and margherita) were excellently composed, each with cheeses to support and harmonize with the other carefully selected ingredients. It is obvious much love and care has gone into these recipes. All were phenomenal, but I think the margherita was the star of the show, the tomato sauce was balanced, but complex and carried the mozzarella and was highlighted with the bright notes of fresh basil. My only regret was leaving, physically unable to eat any more. This spot will definitely be added to the list of must-visits whenever I am in town. PS. Say hi to Lucas, he's awesome. read more

Not known for their service, but rather for their pizza. Despite this, I insist you get the spicy meatballs. So much sauce will require one (if not two) orders of focaccia. Their caesar is nice, too. This place knows pizza. If you enjoy wood fired pizza you won't be disappointed! They also have a great rotating beer selection and some of the best meatballs I've ever had. Walked to this place from the Space Needle and it was pretty empty. They have a limited lunch menu, but the margherita pizza was very, very good. They did have a great variety of Ciders on the drink menu (and of course beer). Their pizza special was a Mortadella pizza, which sounded amazing for people who are into exploring weird pizzas. Unfortunately, my selective palette doesn't appreciate the fine experimentations of these wonderful establishments! The pizza sizes are in between. Too big for one person, too small for two. Though, pizzas could probably feed too not-so-hungry people. Two pizzas seemed very adequate for a group of three. What was clearly a chef screw up turned out to be our favorite part of the meal. We ordered the special- a Mortadella Pizza- and added mushrooms and pickled peppers (sounds good right?). We watched the chef make the pizza, only to have the server see that both the mushrooms and peppers had been omitted when he'd retrieved it from the oven. The chef added these items and put the pizza back in the oven for another blast of heat. The result? A perfectly crispy and charred pizza that we thoroughly enjoyed. It was one of the best pizzas we've had in a long time. We ordered another pizza to follow (the balsamic onion and Gorgonzola) that didn't have two rounds of cooking- and the result was a delicious but decidedly limp & sloppy pizza that wasn't nearly as good as the second one. We know next time to ask for the pizza to have a little more time in the oven. Suggest you do the same if you visit. The beers on tap are nice- the selection is very good and they have some rare and unusual selections. They are pricey though- so be forewarned- some pints are over $10. They have wine too (my wife had a lovely glass of Red)- but no liquor. My bus drops me off across the street every day, and I find it difficult to stay away. I love this space, it just feels really comfortable. I love that they play records in there, and when they're not super busy, it's nice to hang out and talk to everyone working there. Some names are escaping me, but Daisy is a really rad lady. :) I really enjoy the large list of rotating taps. I love my beers, my good beers, and the Masonry has plenty to choose from daily. I also like their glasses which I think you can purchase from them? Neat! The wood fired oven keeps it nice and cozy in there, and also cooks a mean pizza! I love the super thin crispy crust. They change up the toppings on their pizzas, and they have just a few to choose from. Next, my absolute favorite item that I have to order isn't pizza, it's their meatballs. You get five or so big tasty (and slightly spicy in the best way) meatballs in a rich tomato sauce. I love these meatballs so much! There's also some wonderful salads, soups, and a few tasty baked dishes. What kind of restaurant has to basically close down to prepare for supper? Came here for a pizza as the reviews state are great, only to be told that they only serve crappy snacks (pic below) in order to prepare for supper. We had the meat pie and it really sucked. I love putting balls in my mouth at the Masonry. Meatballs, that is. They are a little spicy and delicious and I could eat 50 of them. The pizza is solid if not earthshattering (definitely add the pancetta to the mushroom pizza, totally worth it). I've almost always enjoyed the seasonal salad specials. And as many have mentioned, the beer selection is excellent. This strip of LQA just NEEDED a restaurant like the Masonry after years of suffering through Quiznos/crapola restaurants nearby. Definitely recommend it if you're in the area and in the mood for great beer and good wood-fired pizza. read more

Great new addition to lower Queen Anne. Unique brew selection and fantastic service. I tried the meatballs and the Sausage pizza. Pizza was extraordinary and prepared perfectly. The food menu is small, consisting of pizza and small plates. Everything is cooked in their wood fire oven, resulting in a pleasant smokiness to the small plates, and a perfect, crackling char on the pizza crusts. The rotating pizzas can be an adventure, almost always a satisfying one. The permanent pizzas (e.g. Margherita, mushroom) are crowd pleasers - a recommended choice for first timers. The small plates are hit or miss, but the gnocchi carbonara with fried pancetta is excellent - a must try for those craving savory indulgence. Perhaps the biggest attraction is the selection behind the bar. They have the best bottled beer list in lower Queen Anne, not to mention a dozen rotating taps of local beer, wine, and cider. It's definitely a beer heavy offering, but who's craving a Chablis when face deep in a hand tossed, wood fired, prosciutto and roasted red pepper pizza? Keep that pretension at Purple where it belongs. While this review might encourage attendance, I'd prefer you take your time getting there. I am going to resist the urge to call this place "Hole in the wall". As many people may. For anyplace that offers such an incredible array of beers stands head and shoulders above a mere "Hole in the wall". Although I will admit, that in the final minutes of downtown Seattle rush hour, I did drive by it twice. It is a terribly simple and small place. Barely a dozen tables, one of which is a long, wooden table that basically splits the place in half. It also, due to the lack of space, forces you to enjoy your dinner in a communal setting. If you are unfortunate enough to get there after all the other tables are gone. I will give the devote a few thumbs up. They were spinning vinyl which is ridiculous but kinda retro cool. And, there is this huge window that slides open and faces the street. To sit there and watch the city go by is very welcome. Now to the pie (Pizza) that I'm sorry to say was not the star of the show. I had the roast lamb shoulder pie with roasted tomatoes, shallots, mint basil pesto and mizithra. I found the dough wasn't oiled or seasoned. I thought the cheese seemed kind of "Kraft-ish" and was just underwhelmed with it. However, leave it to the beer Gods to save the night. As I said, the selection of craft beers here are incredible but, I am a stout man and it's that time if year. I had the North Coast Barrel Rasputin. With an alcohol count of 11.5% and costing about $21 per challis, it was definitely the highlight of the night. Again, I am not knocking this place and I am sure with time, they will get that pie (Pizza) thing down to a science. Generally, I enjoy eating here. I think its a great neighborhood spot, lovely selection of beers (and my dad particularly enjoys the ginger beer), and I love that they keep the menu fairly simple and focused (though I do wish they had about 2 more choices on the pizza). I always seem to get the same waitress when I go, and she is great, super sweet, definitely a plus to going there. I'm hoping they figure out how to cook the pizzas without burning them - I don't mind the slightly burnt crust, but can always be a bit of a gamble when I bring a friend along if they will like it. Overall, I'm looking forward to seeing how this place grows into itself, as it continues to figure things out beyond the first year. read more

Can I just say that I can't stop thinking about the Watermelon Salad I had on Monday night. It had just the right amount of salt, just the right amount of sweet. It was delicious, hearty, and refreshing. Sure, the pizza was also amazing, but the chef was the star of the show. She held so much confidence it was very inspiring. So why the 4 star review? The service was a little slow and slightly un-attentive. Don't get me wrong, it was not terrible. I am not unhappy. There were just little things I noticed...my husband's beer glass sat empty while our server walked by the table several times...we weren't given the check really all that promptly...our plates weren't cleared efficiently. It was busy, but there was just a slight sense of inefficiency. I am very confident though, that this little kink will get worked out as the restaurant matures. Context: I've been to Italy so I'm a pizza snob. This thin crust pizza was delicious. I got the sausage and a friend got the mushroom and we shared. I really liked the sausage better since it had tomato sauce. Beer selection was unique (great). We had a sour beer that went great. Beware that the beer prices were a bit high since they were speciality. Service was great. We went at lunch and the pizzas came right out. Place is cool but on the smaller side. Absolutely loved everything. The place had a vibe about it that made me comfortable right away. Sitting in the window with it open to the street was the best seat in the house. Totally LOVED this place! I don't know if I was extra-hungry last night, or what, but... Man! I sure enjoyed the meal! Hubby liked it a lot, too. The Hubs ordered the Caesar Salad, and it was the best Caesar I've ever had -- anywhere! I couldn't stop stealing bites from him. We also got an order of meatballs. Delicious. Really tender, but not falling-apart. They have a spicy kick that doesn't hit your palate immediately. The sauce didn't seem that spicy though, just the meatballs. And after our pizza arrived, we dipped the pizza "bones" into the sauce, which was a bonus. We ordered one of the seasonal pizzas: Roasted Lamb Shoulder pizza. It was unusual. I wasn't sure about it on the first bite, but after taking a few bites, I was into it. Hubby liked it too, although I would say that he didn't love it. Not sure he would order it again, although I would, but not until I've had a chance to try their other pizzas. I really liked the crust. It was stretched thin, but the bottom crust wasn't crackling-crisp. In fact, it wasn't crisp at all, which is fine with me, but some people might not like such a limp bottom crust. The edge, though, was really good: not too thick, but thick enough to get that pillowy softness that is so delightful; and a little yeasty but not aggressively so. The pizza oven is wood-fired so you get hints of that charred flavor. They didn't over-sauce the pizza either -- an all-too-common error, IMO. We really wanted to try the bread pudding, but we just ran out of time (we had theater tickets). Hubby got a specialty beer, and loved it. Our waiter was superb (didn't catch his name). The atmosphere is very unassuming and unpretentious, down to earth and casual, warm and familial, and it wasn't that loud which is nice because sometimes I can get really bothered by noise. They were playing John Lee Hooker (vinyl LP!) on a record player, complete with skipping (loved it). When we arrived it was already dark outside, and we couldn't see a sign on the front of the building, so I guess you just have to locate it using the address (there was only a sandwich board on the sidewalk "WOOD FIRED PIZZA BEER"). This place is still fairly new (I think 6 months?) but already surpasses any of the previous tenants here (Quizno's anyone?). What a perfect addition to the LQA neighborhood. We are OBSESSED with this pizza. I'm bummed some people didn't find it exceptional, but I guess not everyone enjoys good tasting pizza with high-quality ingredients. I mean, this place is busy EVERY night and everyone I've taken here loves the pizza! (but you'll never wait very long unless you have a huge group of people - or it's 8pm on a Friday...) We can usually squeeze 2-3 people at the bar somewhere, or in the family style seating in the center of the restaurant. The pizza crust is literally the most amazing dough I have ever eaten. I could probably eat here every day of the week and be happy. It's wood-fired so you may get a few crusty/burnt pieces, but it never takes away from how yummy this pizza is. You can't go wrong with any of their classics - Margarita or Sausage (make sure you add the peppers!) - or whatever they have on the menu for that week/day. The meatballs are also delish (a little spicy too!). They have an amazing rotating beer selection (& like a hundred other kinds in bottles) that you cannot go wrong with. It's like Browers for beer with delicious pizza. What's not to love? Go give it a try - and then go back again. I work in Lower Queen Anne, I come to this place often. The Staff is always courteous and speedy. The menu is limited, but honestly you are coming here for the Pizza and great selection of Local Beer, what more do you need. The Pizza, is always great, never soggy, they always seem to use the freshest ingredients, which I am sure is helped by a limited menu. If you find yourself coming up to QA and were thinking about doing something different than Pesos. You need to try this place. You will be back, and craving it. My only wish is the beers were not rotational, because sometimes they get amazing beers, and when you go back POOF it's gone. read more
