We brought a group of friends for a pre-theater dinner here and walked away ecstatic over the freshness of their ingredients and the wonderful flavors we had just experienced. Nicole, our server, was a patient and gracious host as she guided us through the menu and answered our questions. She explained that everything on the menu is locally sourced and the farm sources are listed on a board displayed in the dining room. Truly farm to table! Even the wines are all from NY State. (I was especially happy to see the Wolffer Estate Rose from Long Island on the wine list.) We started with several appetizers: deviled eggs (with pesto, carrots, garlic and duck prosciutto); oven-roasted chicken wings (chili maple glaze and homemade ranch sauce) and local burrata (with herbed breadsticks, basil walnut pesto, aged balsamic and cherry tomatoes). Each app was a flavor explosion that brought smiles all around our tables. The entrees continued hitting all the right notes. Their wood fired meatloaf, made from Hudson Vally beef and stuffed with kale, vegetables, herbs and blue cheese, is unlike any you've ever had and may keep you from ever having meatloaf anywhere else. The wood roasted cod picatta (white wine reduction with asparagus & cherry tomatoes served in a small skillet) was amazingly moist and flavorful. The maple marshmallow s'mores was a decadent way to end our great meal there. The restaurant is deep and narrow, but cozy and welcoming, with staff that is talented and friendly. The secret to standing out is having a great website and outstanding Yelp reviews--and that's exactly what led us to The Marshal. We made reservations for a family dinner while visiting New York, and I'm so glad we did. This charming, cozy restaurant is very narrow, and even though they've made great use of every inch of space, seating is definitely limited. One of the first things I noticed was that many tables were sharing dishes family-style. Personally, I think that's the best way to experience The Marshal. The plates tend to be on the smaller side, so ordering a few dishes to share lets everyone sample more of the menu. The food was excellent. We started with the deviled eggs and the burrata salad, and both were delicious. I ordered the cod, which had incredible flavor, although the portion felt a bit small for the price. My husband had one of the pizzas and couldn't stop talking about how good it was. The restaurant was packed during our visit, so the service reflected a busy evening--but in the best way. The staff was attentive, friendly, and efficient. We never felt forgotten, and every time someone stopped by, they made sure we had everything we needed. The only thing worth mentioning is how incredibly close the tables are. They actually have to pull the table out so you can sit down because there's only a few inches between neighboring tables. We definitely became part of the conversations happening on both sides of us! I understand why they've chosen to maximize seating, but if you're looking for an intimate, private dinner, it's something to keep in mind. Overall, we had a wonderful evening. The food, atmosphere, and friendly service far outweighed the tight seating, and we wouldn't hesitate to return the next time we're in New York. read more

I was at this spot with a group a while back. They fall under a category not commonly seen in many places anymore, a form-to-table restaurant proudly listing all of their protein, dairy, and vegetable supplies. The inside was cozy and matched the category, and there was a moderate amount of noise. Our waiter was friendly and gave wine and food suggestions to anyone who asked. Outside of their wines and beers, they have a nice selection of non-alcoholic drinks, and I went with a cider, which was tasty. The food took a while to come out, with some dishes taking much longer than others, including my main dish and someone else's fish, with one entree arriving within 15 or 20 minutes and the others arriving much, much later. I went with the Wood Fired Sirloin Burger, for $24.50, listed as seasoned Happy Valley beef, local white cheddar, sundried tomato remoulade, caramelized onions, sweet potato fries, and homemade ketchup. There was also an option to add bacon for an extra +3.50, but I decided against it. The burger itself was pretty flavorful and juicy. The cheddar was of good quality, and the sun-dried tomato helped reduce the sweetness of the caramelized onion. However, as can be seen from the photos, the top bun was just a bit past charred, so along with the good beef flavor, there was occasionally some unwanted bitterness. It also fell apart after a while, but I don't mind this if the burger is flavorful. The sweet potato fries were plentiful, but not that good. They varied in size and thickness, so some of them had a perfect texture, some were still soft, and a good amount were honestly burnt. I don't mind a bit of char as it adds some nicer crisp, but this was way too much, and I'm surprised this wasn't noticed, though they were crowded. The housemade ketchup also helped with the burnt fries, and it was pleasantly less sweet than the typical Heinz or other brands, being more similar to British ketchup. As I got my burger quite late, I didn't bother complaining as I didn't want to have to wait a long time for another entree. I think I just ordered the wrong thing here, or they had a bad night. I could see the vision of the burger, but it wasn't executed well. On a side note, another person went with one of their standard pizzas and enjoyed it, and I was given a small amount, and it was tasty. In short, if I were to ever go back here, I probably would order the Farmer's Market Pizza. I'm sticking with a 3 as I didn't really enjoy my entree, but I could see it being bumped up to a 4 next time I stop in, as I like their vibes and their farm-to-table attitude. read more

I feel compelled to update my review of The Marshal, because it's been a while, and my love for the place has only grown. It has truly become one of my absolute favorite restaurants in NYC (or anywhere, for that matter). I have yet to have anything short of an exceptional experience whenever I dine here. I love their creative seasonal menus that are always evolving, and their pizzas are so unique and delicious. They also have very well-balanced cocktails and and really tasty salads and entrees (their brunch is great--best eggs benedict I've ever had). The service is always so friendly, personable, and efficient (Nicole is my favorite server and an awesome human being, and Charlie, the owner, is also incredibly kind and welcoming). My fiancé randomly found The Marshal while searching for a suitable Saturday brunch spot in the city. He accidentally made a reservation for our group to be seated outside when it should have been indoors. The staff were very accommodating getting us seated even though they had a lot of upcoming reservations for the day. I was happy to discover they had mimosas available, my favorite. They had so many yummy sounding things on their brunch menu, but I simply had to try their gluten-free mushroom, egg, & arugula pizza. It had absolutely no right to be as good as it was. The service was nice and I appreciate that they do take consideration to ensure safe gluten-free dining. My only complaint is that The Marshal isn't closer to home. read more

Although my reservation was for five they only had a table for 4 but my friend's wife didn't make it so it all worked out. The staff were so nice, but they were definitely understaffed. This place reminds me of the episode of Portlandia where the server tells them where the chicken is from, what its name was and they visit the farm. This is not a bad thing, just emphasizing that they use local ingredients. The food was amazing! We loved the Brussels sprouts salad and the mac and cheeses we shared both of those. This is a jewelry box size gem of a restaurant so reservations are definitely in order. We dined there after a double header of Giant and Oh, Mary! and it was the perfect post theater spot. We were seated right away; happily soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Lively without being too loud. Our server was helpful and just the right amount of attentive. The food and drink are all sourced locally and a chalkboard at the entrance lists their purveyors. We had dinner at The Marshal in Hell's Kitchen last night and I can honestly say it was one of the best dining experiences we've had in NYC in a long time. My wife ordered the wood-fired chicken, and it looked absolutely incredible when it hit the table. After one bite, I understood why -- perfectly cooked, insanely juicy, with that subtle wood-fired flavor that just elevates everything. You can tell they take pride in what they're doing. I went with the burger, and it was outstanding. Cooked exactly right, full of flavor, and easily one of the better burgers I've had in the city. The fries deserve their own mention -- crispy, flavorful, and baked (not fried), which was huge because they're gluten-free and my wife could enjoy them too. That level of attention to dietary needs without sacrificing quality is rare. I also ordered a Manhattan, and it was phenomenal. Balanced, smooth, and clearly made by someone who knows how to make a proper cocktail -- not overly sweet, not watered down, just right. What really made the night special, though, was our waiter, Dawson. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely cared about making sure we had a great experience. Love the ambience at The Marshal! Filled with hip New Yorkers engaged in intense conversation, at tables set cheek by jowl in the dimly lit sliver of space that is the restaurant. The menu is seasonal and creative, updated takes on comfort food. We adored the mac and cheese, and the brussel sprout salad was very good. I wish we had gotten the meatloaf which everyone raves about - instead we opted for the fish entree. It was good but skimpy for the price and I could have done without it. We were upsold the roasted carrots as a side dish and wish we had not gone down that road - this was the biggest disappointment of the meal. But overall, we had a lovely time and I would definitely return. The Hell's Kitchen location is great if seeing a Broadway show - close enough to the theater district but not in the thick of things. This will go down as one of the best lunches I've had in NYC. We happened upon The Marshal as we were looking for a quick lunch and I'm so glad that we found it. First, it's a small spot, as expected, but know it's extra tight. If that's not your style, probably skip for a different location. The lunch special includes an entire (huge) pizza plus a small salad. For being a small salad, it was still pretty big and was bursting with flavor. Knowing that their ingredients are locally sourced made the food taste even better, in my opinion. The pizza is out of this world - no it's not NY style pizza - but that's a good thing. They didn't honor our reservation time. Had booked a birthday dinner here well in advance for around 10 people in the winter. We arrived early and then were all standing outside in the cold for over 45 minutes past the reservation time (there is no room inside to wait). The host wouldn't budge on giving us a time estimate of when we'd be seated, he just kept saying he couldn't guarantee anything. That's ridiculous even for a normal reservation, but for a large party reservation I was blown away they would do this. After we were finally seated, a party member asked if we could have something free as recompense, like a few glasses of wine. The waiter grimaced and seemed offended, and declined. This was our first time in New York and we were so excited to try various restaurants. This was by far my favorite place we ate. Service was a 10. Theodore was our server. Matter of fact he was the only server and he ran those tables like nothing I had ever seen. He gave us great recommendations, very attentive, and was so nice. Food is another 10! We had Deviled Eggs and local burrata as starters. They did not disappoint. I would highly suggest both. I wanted to try the short ribs too but we also wanted mains. Maybe for next time!! We all got something different and tried each others for comparison. Everyone enjoyed the roasted Brussels sprout salad, the meatloaf, and the cauliflower side. We also ordered two pizzas and they were both good but I would like to try others dishes over the pizza next time. I was in the area for something else and I was hungry so I decided to have "linner" (late lunch/early dinner) here a bit before 5pm. There were a few people sitting outside and it looked like a cute space, plus they described themselves as a farm-to-table and "wood-fire" place so it sounded good. Service was friendly--first a young man who seated me & took my drink order, for which he helpfully gave suggestions when I asked. I got the Elderflower Blossom cocktail since I wanted something refreshing. This was brought over by my waitress, a friendly young woman who I also asked for recommendations. I asked her what she would recommend between the burger or chicken or cod, and she said the burger being wood-fired made it especially good. She didn't ask how I wanted it cooked so maybe being wood-fired it is just fine one way. Anyway I went with that as an entree, plus the deviled eggs for an app. The deviled eggs were pretty good and the burger was HUGE since it came with 2 patties. The cheese melting all over it and it being fresh & hot did make it fairly impressive. It came with sweet potato fries, some of which had the nice wood-fire char, others that needed to be cooked more/crisper. The ketchup was "home made" so it had a different taste that I liked well enough. I could not finish so much so I took some of it to go, although I know that this is not the kind of food that travels well & is best eaten right away. Food was on the pricier side but I enjoyed it overall. There is one small no-gender bathroom which was kind of claustrophobic & dark & didn't smell great (since there's just 1 bathroom for everyone) but it was still fairly clean. We had the biscuits, the deviled eggs (my absolute favorite) and the chicken wings for app and they did NOT disappoint. The vegan pizza doesn't sound like it would be tasty but it was soooo good, with garlic and arugula and a tasty marinara. I honestly didn't miss the cheese. It was that good! My son got pepperoni pizza, which had dried pepperoni packed with flavor and was perfectly placed on a thin crust. The servers were incredibly friendly and helpful. I will preface that my review is based on my overall experience, rather than the food itself. And that requires some explanation. I have food sensitivities from time to time and need to try and avoid certain ingredients such as onions and garlic. Not easy when you are traveling and dining out, BUT, it always warms my heart to find how restaurants work to accommodate my needs. Well, not The Marshal. I selected The Marshal as a pre-theatre option based on reviews and the fact that they had a fish option on the menu. I have never not been able to order fish with my food sensitivities. That is until The Marshal. We arrived at 4:30 pm and were the only diners for a good 30 minutes. The venue is warm and welcoming, and being early December was nicely appointed for a holiday feel. We were immediately welcomed and seated. When asked if there were any food allergies and I mentioned my limitations, the result was our server going to the kitchen, and hearing laughter when she inquired how I could be accommodated. Fish is pre-seasoned (I cook fish all the time and even when I can have onion and garlic, NOT something I season fish with). They could not manage to scrape a burger together for me. No chicken option that wasn't pre-seasoned. It was a salad or nothing. I had a Farmers Market Salad with Grilled Shrimp added. To be fair, it was delicious and contained a nice portion of shrimp. I also tasted one of my friend's Deviled Eggs (throwing caution to the wind), which was also delicious. Again, this review is not based on the food. If I weren't dealing with health issues, I am entirely certain that I would have had a different experience. But this one only got worse. When a gentleman came to our table with the dessert menu, he told me I would be ok as the desserts do not contain garlic or onion. Yes, I know he was trying to be amusing, but it was entirely insensitive. Yet, I smiled and took a pass on dessert. My friend ordered the Braised Lamb Shank, which looked delicious and was much enjoyed. If you can eat anything, this seems like a great option pre-theatre. Close enough to the shows, but not inundated with foot traffic/tourists. Very much a 'local' spot. I will not personally be back. What they found amusing, I found humiliating. Snagged a table in this tiny place thats rustic and cute. We were told we had a time limit because there was a private party coming in. Not a great way to welcome your guests. We had the ribs and deviled eggs which were great. I ordered the blue cheese stuffed meatloaf which was not a great move. Unfortunately it came out looking very unappetizing but I ate some and it tasted ok not great. After the uncomfortable time limit thing they ended up buying us dessert which was nice but didn't really jive with the whole get out by the time our private party arrives.
