Smokey Old Fashioned
Dave C.

The Madam is located behind a hidden bookshelf, on the 3rd Floor, of The Scottsdale Resort in McCormick Ranch. It is as mysterious as the story behind the "Madam" of the McCormick family. The ambiance and mystery of this speakeasy brought me back in time to the Prohibition Era and going against the Anti-Saloon League. There are only 4 tables in The Madam so a reservation is necessary. Luckily, Yelp had a direct link to book a rez through OpenTable. I would recommend a 5pm or 6pm reservation so you can enjoy your time and experience without being rushed. The main mixologist, Gina, made the night a true delight! The night began with a craft apéritif cocktail. Shortly following, I let her make her version of a Smokey Old Fashioned. Smokey Bitters and a lit Cinnamon Stick made the presentation a true spectacle! Next up, I ordered the Word of Mouth cocktail. High West Double Rye, Resposado, Aperol, Ginger, & Lemon Juice make up this delicious drink. Again, she brought out one cocktail "true to recipe" and the other glass featured Pear Liquor substituting the tart Lemon juice and Ginger. Ordered Mini Crab Cakes and Truffle Fries for munchies. Everything was exquisite! I highly recommend paying this speakeasy a visit and hopefully you get the opportunity to meet Gina and let her guide you through time back to Prohibition!

Intimate speakeasy located right inside the Scottsdale Resort & Spa located on the third floor. It's a very SMALL venue so if it is at capacity, you can enjoy in your drink in the social boardroom located right outside of the door. Our mixologist, Gina, was a cocktail artist. Rather than order from the menu, my friend and I told her the type of the drinks we liked and she made us a speciality cocktail. Drinks were tasty. Great spot to hang and enjoy a few cocktails!

This was my first time at a Speakeasy. It was small, quiet, and aesthetically pleasing. The bartender was nice and listened to our requests which resulted in some very yummy drinks. My friend's drinks came with limes that were set on fire. I requested something sweet that had egg white on top. The bartender delivered. The place was a little hard to find but we were also a little sleepy when we went lol... it was a good experience.

Made a reservation and highly recommend you do since it is small. Our bartender Kadek made it special since we were celebrating a birthday and he provided a very nice complimentary cocktail to the birthday girl. This was lovely, it had campari, strawberry, japanese gin, and toasted cinnamon aroma infused - which made the entire bar smell nice. We also had the Devil's Gambit, and the Dooms Day. Loved the chocolate profile of the Dooms Day! For food, we had the Crab Cakes, and the Truffle Fries. Loved the Crab Cakes. Be aware, it is Scottsdale resort prices. The entrance is through the bookcase in the Social Boardroom which is on the 3rd floor.

It's a cute little hidden bar. Love the concept of a bar behind a bookcase. It's a very small, intimate setting, low lights and only a few tables. The bartender seemed very nice, and very dedicated to his craft. We didn't try any food, even though the menu sounded good, we were just full. He had the "Wilson's Law" which was a little too heavy on the mint for my liking, but he liked it. I had a mocktail, as I wasn't feeling like having a drink at that moment. He asked if I liked fruity drinks, and obvi I said yes. Maybe I'm basic enough that he can tell, but he wasn't wrong. He also asked if I was fine with carbonation, also yes, so it was a bubbly fruity concoction which I would totally drink again. It was a cute and fun experience. When you have good company and a cute place to be, it's a night to remember. If you're at the Scottsdale resort and spa, make a reservation for this cute hidden bar!

Located behind the bookcase...located in the boardroom...located in the Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch...located in Old Town Scottsdale... There are many speakeasies around town, as they have really gained popularity, and The Madam is one that really has that true prohibition secretive feel. It's a small dark space that only seats eight. Reservations are recommended, especially outside of slower summer hours. We visited in July and were the only patrons for a couple of hours. (Downside to that is that they did close early, after we left, due to low turnout.) We were greeted by bartender Kadek as he handed us each a small introductory sipping glass of his own delicious concoction. We each ordered a signature cocktail from the menu to start but trusted Kadek for the rest. He asked our tastes and made us each a couple of great cocktails of his choosing. There are a few lite bites to choose from as well, so we enjoyed some crab cakes and the truffle fries. Being the only guests in the bar, we had fun getting to know Kadek. He was a few months into his 1 year hospitality internship with the hotel and quickly moved from serving to tending bar. We enjoyed learning about him growing up in Bali and his future career plans. He really made the experience great, and we never would have guessed that he was newer to creating cocktails. We truly had a fun time. So much so that we went to the hotel desk and grabbed a room for the night so that we could enjoy Kadek and The Madam a little longer.

Fun hidden spot in the Scottsdale resort. The craft cocktails and cocktails were delicious. Small serve for a hefty price tag but the master craft cocktail maker made amazing drinks and you can tell takes great pride in his craft.

We were in town just for a week and found this gem! The decor was stunning and the ambiance was so inviting! And well, the drinks were absolutely amazing! Too bad we ate before we got there! Would have loved to try their food! Until next time!

We have so many cute little speakeasies popping up all over the Valley, and this is one of my favorites. Was able to get a Friday evening reservation just a few hours ahead, which was a pleasant surprise considering it is not a large venue (there are only 4 tables). The entire place is very aesthetically pleasing, from the decor to the drinks. Kadek is an amazing bartender, and a huge part of why I liked this place so much. He is so friendly, and he makes great drinks. The birthday drinks are quite the production. There is a small food menu - we had the truffle Parmesan fries. They were delicious and came with plenty enough to share. The speakeasy is on the 3rd floor at the resort, look for the Social Boardroom. Make sure you get that password first. You'll get in through the bookcase - I always love those cool speakeasy hidden entrances. You can get valet parking if you drive up to the lobby, or simply self-park for free. The resort is gorgeous and The Madam fits right in!

Great speakeasy experience. The design of the room is so romantic and fully thought out. The bartender took us on a cocktail journey and it was memorable and delicious.

I loved the old fashioned from here !! They added a smoked cinnamon stick which really elevated the drink. The ambience was really pleasant, nice and cozy and it certainly is a speakeasy as it's hidden behind a bookshelf ! Definitely would come here again.

Meh. It was alright. The margs were good. The only food that was available was brunch. We didn't want brunch. The margs did us right though.

Definitely one of the coolest spots in Scottsdale right now. Can't wait to come back.

We walk in and get sat at the bar instead and get told it's the best they can do as others get sat in the middle. Eventually they got a smaller table for us, but the rest of us had to stand. For a big birthday party today, it was a failed experience. Took ages to get our drinks and it was impossible to get water. Couldn't even get some water for the past 2 hours we were there. The people in the middle tables got ice cold waters, we could barely get two and it was warm. At least the inside was nice, but wow, I would NEVER come back or tell my friends about it. I am ASKING a manager to reach out because this experience was HORRIBLE. Not only were they quick to "judge", but they sure were quick to bring the bill.

Another absolutely amazing food experience from Chef Nobuo Fukuda who already gifted us with great…read moredishes made with Sonoran produce at SeeSaw back in the 90's, and Teeter House downtown. The retro-vibed atmosphere of the Papago Motor Inn complements the laid back pace of your meal. This is not a sushi spot or an Izakaya. Hai Noon is a chef presenting southwestern ingredients in a most respectful, flavorful and innovative manner. I was lucky enough to return 3 times in the past month. To my surprise, ingredients and sauces did not repeat themselves, and dishes were completely distinct in flavor and presentation. This is definitely my favorite food experience of the past few years...anywhere. All of our visits were handled by our waiter/guide "Arizona", who described dishes, and when asked what his favorites were (and unlike many other places that say everything is good when it isn't), he informed us we would love everything, but he could help us with the order we ate them, and suggest a sampling if we were just picking out a half dozen dishes. He was right. Everything was captivating, surprising and...absolutely delicious. Do not miss the specials...there will be 4 or 5 on a small piece of paper, and a couple of "special" drinks. These are seasonal items the chef wants to add because of the timing and presentation. They exemplify the category...they are indeed, SPECIAL. The second visit established a pattern. Have Arizona order, until you are full. He checked in with us along the way, and made a few modifications based on our hunger level, and allowing for certain dishes to be repeated. A few things really stood out because I hadn't tasted anything quite like those dishes. Other dishes ie: variations on classic aguachile, were just better than anything I've had elsewhere. Salmon and Whitefish carpaccios were both stellar, with really good hot sesame oil adding to the dish's garlic, ginger and Yuzu base. And, when you are done with the last bite of fish, they bring out rich, grilled slices of bread to mop up that sauce. We last started with Sashimi featuring Sea Bream, that had fatty belly, and less fatty but oh-so-flavorful filet slices, and an accompanying broth. Big Eye Tuna was served on a flavorful beet puree with sweet dark cherry wine notes. Since we didn't read the menu's notes before, a quick check showed that Nobuo does create a Pinot Noir reduction that invites wiping the plate clean. The first time, the Tuna and all traces of the puree were finished by the time Arizona walked out to describe the dish for us. That's why I re-ordered it each time we visited. Soup spoons present a sashimi/ceviche/aguachile experience that is delicate, nuanced, complex and downright spectacular in your mouth. Whether it showcased an oyster, hamachi or kampachi, each spoon was an amazing taste experience with complementing flavors and textures that were completely unexpected. Softshell Crab with cold noodles was the most succulent Softshell crab I have ever enjoyed, warm, beautifully moist and flavor popping within its crispy exterior, set off by the chilled vinegar and broth accented noodles. Brussel Sprouts with a honey mustard and wasabi glaze disappeared immediately. As it turns out, wasabi is the missing ingredient in many Brussel Sprout dishes! The Yams with goat cheese and Fresno chiles reminded me of the amazing fire-grilled gourds and yam dishes I have had at Bacanora...just unique and different. Two Wash chicken was beautifully caramelized finger food that I could also have made a meal out of. We thought it was amazing, and then the chef came out and told us how inspired he was when he first met the chicken farmers and cooked with their chicken, and if possible, the chicken became even more memorable for the story and connection. Curry marinated lamb was rich, and savory, and was another dish I could make a meal out of. The Pork Belly and Mushroom rice was likewise delicious, and full or deep umami richness and delectable meat and mushroom morsels. The Mushrooms en papillote (mushrooms served in paper), had absorbed what tasted like a delicious Veal Stock, were tastily caramelized, and then steamed in the paper container. They were so good we had to have another...and we weren't skimping on food. Beverages (Alcoholic and non) get the same attention. The cocktail list sounds absolutely crazy, with improbable ingredients. But all of the ones we sampled work, and they are wonderful (sharing amongst our table, we have now tried over half of the cocktails...and so far, they are damn great drinks). The beer selection is small and ideal for the food, as are the well-chosen cold sakes that span all budgets. It is better with a small group of people so you can really explore the breadth of fabulous offerings, but I think it's also an amazing spot to share food on a date!

I could eat this every day and never get sick of it. Melts in your mouth. A must order. Wouldn't recommend: the salmon sashimi. The salmon was room temperature/a little warm which threw me off and made it tough to enjoy. Maybe a cold plate for serving would help combat this! The flavor was there, but the temperature made me nervous. Maybe order: the yams. For me, it had way too much topping in a small bowl, which made it overwhelming. Some of the yams were undercooked, but there is a lot of potential for this dish!
