Love this place. Chad cooks great, my food was delicious and cheap. Great conversation, nice folks and good service. Although my server had a lot of tables, still gave good service and chatted a bit. My husband and I were here on Orcas for a long weekend, we had heard from friends that the Lower Tavern had great hamburgers - so we stopped in for lunch. We sat on "the beach" an outdoor area with a sandy floor that was very well kept up, raked daily, very nice. Sandy took care of us and she was great, cold brews and yummy burgers - had the southwest burger & the "special" chicken parmesan - both were terrific. I've been here plenty of times within the last couple of years. It's definitely a dive bar. There is a pool table, complimentary wifi, too many tvs (usually broadcasting sportsball), a jukebox, decent food and drink, an outdoor patio where smoking is not typically allowed, and an awesome crew that runs the place. read more

Really a fan of this place. We came after hiking totally drenched and in our hiking clothes, and I didn't feel judged at all. It was 4:00 or 5 pm ish and we hadn't eaten much all day. They were running a special, "the burning hunk of love burger" since it was Valentines weekend. We ended up getting matching burgers, but without the mango salsa; he got chips, and I got fries. I do not joke when I say I haven't had fries in YEARS. These were very good, and A+ because they didn't make me sick like so many other types of fries. We really enjoyed our burgers, but super spicy (living up to the "burning" part of the name) with all the jalepenos! Many TVs made dinner distracting. This is definitely a place where the locals go. Good service too from a very nice gentleman, who looked like he was the owner or something. Lots of yummy options on the menu, and I was able to make a gluten-free selection without much difficulty. This IS "As good as it gets" for a beer/wine bar in Eastsound. Obviously some people with hundreds of little pet peeves might find "better" in their lives in a metropolis where there are hundreds of choices. However, the Lower always delivers - to locals and tourists alike. It is a beer and wine bar (always has been though I once heard a tourist literally trying to argue with the server that it used to have liquor). They've got several good drafts and lots of bottles. They keep it clean. The food is great pub fare, the staff is honest and friendly. Sorry to tourists who expect a false fake optimism at their holy presence. They treat people with respect as it is given. I see it not given but expected a lot for tourists visiting Orcas -side issue. But if you want a great burger and beer or to take in a game, this is the place for it. read more

This is the locals place on Orcas, but staff and the owner are very friendly and welcoming towards everyone. The food is better than average bar food--the salad greens are island-grown and organic, for example. There's a big outdoor area with string lights and sand. Good beer, very reasonable prices, Mariner games on tv, karaoke, jukebox...a fun place. 5 stars for what it is--it's obviously not a five star restaurant, but it's a great casual bar. read more

Dinner on Sat Aug 5---Loved this place.. after a week over over priced.. average food in 'top' restaurants.. It was wonderful to have a great meal at a good price.. The waitress (blonde short hair did not get her name) was funny, attentive and helpful.. The wings came with a huge plate of carrots, cucumber slices and celery.. a full salad in itself.. I had the salmon sandwich with a side of perfectly done cole slaw.. $16 I think... far cry from the $38 entres at other places in town... yes it is like a biker bar... but good people watching... and on such a casual island.. perfect!!!! read more

The Lower really does have the best burgers in town. Also excellent wings. Spent a week in Eastsound in Feb 2014 and had 4 good meals there. The service is excellent too. All 3 of the waitresses who served us were helpful, made good recommendations for good and drink, and gave us fast and friendly service. read more

Ate there while spending a weekend on Orcas. The food was very good, in particular their halibut fish and chips was delicious! Beer was reasonably priced although the selection wasn't too impressive. We didn't have a bad experience with the service although it wasn't great either - the menus were also apparently outdated so that we kept trying to order drinks just to be told they weren't actually available. That said it still deserves 4 stars because of the halibut in my book :] read more

We went in there to watch the Warriors and noticed that the burgers looked good. The locals were very friendly, nice people. We went back the next evening to have dinner. The patty melt I had was the best I ever had. The sautéed onions were delicious on the rare black Angus burger. My wife had the fish and chips which was also delicious. A friendly local commented that I had the best burger on the menu. We always found the locals to be friendly. read more

I have been frequenting the lower tavern for going on 19 years. when the previous owner mike passed away the quality dropped drastically (from being worthwhile to make the trip from Seattle, including a 1 hour ferry ride, to get a burger worth it) to being a pretty good place to eat... being november, I figured I would be able to get a decent quick meal... in the summer I can expect to not wait too long, and the occasional slip in quality from decent to mediocre, but tonight wasn't busy, yet my sweet potato fries (add a couple bucks) were burnt, the sandwich was overcooked rubbery turkey, and drowned in mayo... kinda would have expected better quality when I stopped in for my birthday dinner.... though the sign says best burger in town, realize that sign has been there 20 plus years.. you can get much better burgers almost anywhere in town, most notably the orcas hotel, westsound cafe, mia's, and the skillet.. of course, being a town that rolls up at 9pm, the lower is pretty much it after 9.... oh, I went to dinner @ 7 tonight... read more

It's unfortunate, how terrible the service is here. The food is pretty good for bar food, if you can get it. But I can't overstate it enough: the service is consistently horrible, probably the only consistent thing about the place. Slow, cantankerous bartenders will eventually take your orders, if they feel like it. And if you have an extra 40 minutes the food can be good. I just don't think it's worth the time or emotional abuse. read more

When there was still smoking in bars and restaurants, I held my breath as much as possible and braved their smoke occasionally for their burgers, then considered the best on Orcas. Now, they are just as good as ever, and more exotic varieties to tempt your palate. Their fries are even better. The sweet potato fries are some of the best I have had. For burgers, the swiss mushroom burger is definitely worth having and the patty-melt with onions is second to that, so I have not tried their other menu items. I find the waiter Kyle to be efficient and helpful. Though sometimes the service is slow, just let them know ahead of ordering and they will be clear on how long -or short- it will take, with the current patrons ahead of you. read more

seriously one of the best meals i had the ENTIRE time i was on Orcas Island. my boyfriend and i headed here after one CRAZY bike ride, and i was very pleasantly surprised. our server, emily, was very helpful and friendly. she helped us pick a couple of AWESOME local beers and kept us very happy out on the sandy patio. we would've sat for hours if we could've. we made sure to stop and thank the chef for our yummy food. he was also very nice. i GREATLY recommend checking this place out...and order the sourdough burger...you won't regret it! read more
