Not a great selection. The store has coolers but nothing fresh. I felt the items were overpriced and the store is in need of some repairs and updates. We did try some of the snacks which were good but not better quality than what we could find at a gas station.

We stopped here because I've been wanting to stop here for years as it looked like a pretty extensive fruit stand when it was Yamaguchi's. Now, it's more Emporium than fruit stand, and holds quite an eclectic collection of items. They carry landscape items including some plants & trees. Koi and Koi pond items. There are goats - 3, to be exact - and there's a machine you can buy feed from to feed the goats, and you'd better believe the goats know the sound of that quarter plunking! You can feed the koi too. Same setup. There's a handful of red cabooses - the reason for the name of the place I'm gathering and some very cool shade trees with seating underneath. THAT was cool. Inside they have birds... doves, parakeets, chickens, Russian pheasants... Wait. What? A room with 'antiques', which some of them may be, but most of it looks like people have left their yard sale items with hopes they'll sell as kitsch. Lots of toys. And there's a room with local culinary delights like salsas, jellies, loose nuts and the like. All in all an unexpected compilation of odd things - fun to look through - some local items of interest - but not a place I'll return to.

Feeding the Koi fish.

I enjoyed this place as one of those odd off the beaten path roadside shops. Yes, it does have a very odd mix of things to see, but that's what makes it fun. I have to say the coolest part of the store for me were the koi fish. They actually have a lot of them. Everything from really big ones to little babies they are nursing, which was cool. You can feed them, too. They have birds, not a lot, but the prices for them seem very reasonable. I don't know anything about birds, but they looked cool. They have an upside-down forest, which is kind of neat. They are like trees standing on their branches with their roots growing up in the air. They have other stuff for your garden like sculptures, local honey, produce, lots of other stuff, too. The place does seem to be run by a friendly family.

Pit stop palace!!

Here's an interesting place for a pit stop... Part general store, part museum, the Loose Caboose is appealing to all ages. They have an aviary! They have koi ponds! They have an upside-down forest! They have seasonal produce. A very nice, family-run business. If you're in the area stop by and take a look!

What a fun place! The Loose Caboose looks like an ordinary fruit stand along the endless highway, but inside are treasures to delight the young at heart! It is a museum, zoo, and emporium with antiques, garden pottery, local jellies, train calenders and much more. It is also an historical landmark. It includes pools of koi and turtles, an aviary with various birds and shaded areas for potted plants. If you look around, you'll find an old caboose. There are also free restrooms. I look forward to my next visit.

Bad strawberry

Rotten Strawberries, Almost half of the strawberries that I bought were rotten I usually buy them in Oxnard but I stopped here just to regret it. If you're looking for strawberries stop in one of the many places that sell fresh strawberries in Oxnard

Birds for sale in the aviary.

My wife and I were driving down Highway 125 from Ventura when The Loose Caboose caught out eye, so we pulled over to have a look. It is definitely an unusual roadside stop. Lots of produce, as you'd expect, including 40-pound boxes of oranges. Inside, they have lots of curios and a variety of food oddities that you see at places like this. The woman working there was super nice, and that's always a big plus at places like this. Even if your aren't interested in the other things they are selling on the property, it's worth a stop--koi ponds, goats, an aviary, fruit trees, The Upside Down Tree Forest--lots of stuff to see and it's all free to look. If you want to buy a goat or two, you're set!

But make sure you check out the back- they have tons of koi fish that you can feed (food provided with a quarter vending machine) and turtles.

Do not use this company! They do not stand behind their work…read more Spent over $23,000 on landscaping and construction services from this company less than 2 years ago, and have had terrible service from the moment final payment was made. When Brandon (my contact) told me which plants they intended to install, I told him some wouldn't survive the hot, dry, full-sun location. He insisted they would work, and told me they all had a one-year guarantee. Within three months, when they started to die, I sent him photos and asked that they be replaced with others. Despite promises they would be changed (at least six times over the next few months), they were never replaced. Likewise, the artificial turf that was installed was not installed with enough/the right adhesive and the turf has become a serious tripping hazard. Again, calls to Brandon were met with promises that someone would come out to fix it, and no one ever did. Repeated messages were not returned. Last month an obviously broken irrigation pipe under the tile/artificial turf they installed caused flooding in my yard. When I called the company to ask for someone to come out to evaluate what could be done, Jordan told me Brandon no longer worked for the company. (I guess that explains why my messages weren't returned.) Jordan told me he was Brandon's replacement, and that he would be out in two days to take a look. 10 days later, he came out and confirmed it was a broken pipe, but said my warranty had expired and there would be a charge to repair the pipe. He told me it would require the large tiles and turf to be demolished to find the problem, but he'd send me an estimate. It's been over a month and again, I've been ghosted. I consulted another irrigation specialist who told me that if a pipe underground ha broken, it was likely cracked when it was installed. I hope this serves as a warning for anyone considering paying this company to do landscaping and installation.

Despite growing up around here, I somehow never stumbled through these grand entrance gates until recently. This gem of a garden isn't just my butt's savior now on long drives up from LA, but it's a sliver of paradise found--and sanity regained. Just walking around here for 15-20 mins. and you'll feel your blood pressure drop a few notches to a pleasant state of calm. You can explore the themed areas, take in the vegetation around you, and get landscaping tips just from strolling around their property. The plant things are grouped in various climate/hemispheres and it's nice to see them taking root and being incorporated in a seamless design (and it's nice shopping experience too). I was impressed with the selection and bought a few small air plants and succulents that are still thriving with offshoots. Prices are reasonable. For pros looking for inspo, I think this place that can offer Interior Designers & Landscapers creativity with plants. Or even the DIY Weekend Warrior looking to revamp their current landscaping or add a little something new to it. They have a wide variety of exotics, California natives to indigenous to Australia, and every other tree, shrub, and greenery in between. Since it's the year of the (hobby) horse, I'll be sure to get my butt up here more often in 2026.

It's a nice small excursion if traveling to LA. What a wonderful concept to put a botanical garden on the property, it could show what you could do with the plants that they sold. It's tranquil to walk around and explore yet it is right next to the 101 so the freeway was loud. They really packed a lot of diversity into this small area. There were plaques for each different garden. Plaques I noticed (though there might be more) were South African Garden, Mediterranean Garden, Grassland, Cottage Garden, Native Garden, Succulent Garden, Central/South American garden, Australian garden, and Asian garden. My favorite was the Asian garden because it had a pond with koi fish.

I've had to complain to management both of the last two times I've been there. Just now I asked for help getting a furnace filter off an unreachable shelf. The employee I found d to help me lectured me on ho I should have gotten it myself with the grab stick that was leaning in the aisle. I am a 68 year old woman with injuries. I shouldn't have to lose a grab stick at Ace with a bunch of male employees hanging around the aisles. When I complained to the manager he took no responsibility and said that other manager with the grab stick just fine. Well they are 25 year old male handymen working for other people I said. He didn't seem to get it. Well good thing I don't fall backward getting my own furnace filter or Ace would have a big lawsuit on their hands. Is local Ojai going the way of big box stores in big cities?

The city of Santa Paula is beyond lucky to have a hardware store!…read more I think the outside of the store is misleading as it may seem a very small store. But, it's actually quite large inside! I come in here often; have had keys made, bought some yard signs and locks that were needed. And, huge huge shout out to one of their employees a few months ago. Wish I had gotten his name! I came in as my keyfob remote had crapped out. There was a young man who went over and above to try to help me figure out the issue! He came outside to my car with me, had some technical electrical thing that he used to try to help determine if my car was "reading" the fob or not. We even checked a new battery just in case. Come to find out, it didn't need a new battery: my keyfob no longer works in my 15 year old car. :( But big thanks to the employee who helped me *finally determine it was not a battery issue. Staff is pretty good which is so nice to experience. Of course, during the covid, they all have masks on. I didn't notice if they offered sanitizer at the front door, but they do have a "one way door IN and another door OUT", which is per usual at most businesses now it seems. I just recently found out that they carry Ginger Chews. Who would have known!? I would recommend this Ace Hardware and I know that Santa Paula could sure use the support, too.
