I've been a semi-regular at the Log Cabin Inn for many years, and feel confident in my ability to provide an unbiased review. So, here is both the good and bad.
Ambience - By far the best ambience in the entire area. A huge Bier Garten large enough to get lost in. Plenty of nooks and crannies in which to hide and make-out with your boyfriend, your girlfriend, or your sister's aunt's cousin's best friends gynecologist. Bonfires are often lit late at night, and if you're lucky, some whimical polish musicians strike up traditional songs and sing. The interior has a sunken, semi-private room where you may also entertain your sister's aunt's cousin's best friends gynecologist in inclimate weather. 5 Stars in this category.
Beverages and Spirits- The selection is not diverse, but what they have is both potent and fresh. The polish bier is exceedingly tasteful, and served at the correct temperature. If you're looking for 7,843 identical american beers such as Bud, Bud Lite, Miller, Miller Lite, Coors, blah, blah, blah, this isn't the place for you, and would suggest you take a long trip to wrigleyville where they are used to catering to the sheep. They also have an extensive variety of European liquors, brandies, etc. 4 Stars in this category.
Pricing - Good Value. Fresh tap pints for less than a domestic beer at many other establishments. 3.5 Stars in this category.
Service and Amenities - This is a hit or miss adventure. If you are fortunate enough to be served by the regular, full-time bartender, you're in luck, and the service is top-notch. However, if you happen upon one of the younger part-time staff, you may be waving to get their attention as they obliviously thumb through the latest European fashion magazine. Fortunately, the full-time staff is on duty more often than the inattentive part-time staff. Not much in the manner of amenities. With the exception of the Bier Garten, they have a decent Pool Table, and one of the saddest, least inspired Jukeboxes I have had the displeasure of losing money in. I would rate this at 3 Stars in this category.
Complimentary - One might think that any establishment that routinely offers free, tasty, homemade food as opposed to some stale pretzels or popcorn would receive an automatic 5-Star rating. However, this is not the case. While the food is both excellent and fresh, there is another side to service and complimentary offerings, and I am referring to beverages. Many is the evening where I sat with friends and we ran up drinking bills on the level of a Defense Arms budget, yet never were we offered a complimentary drink. I find this to be poor policy. I'm not one to look for a hand-out, but I've never known an establishment that didn't occasionally offer well spending, semi-regular customers a complimentary drink every now and then. While once under the influence of too many polish biers to willingly admit to, I inquired about this bizarre policy. I was told that it was forbidden, and that cameras were monitoring the employees to ensure that no complimentary beverages were served. I do not know whether the camera monitoring is true, and in the long run, this policy hurts the bartenders and staff more than it affects the customers. I believe that patrons are more likely to tip their bartender far more generously if offered an occasional complimentary drink. So, while free food is appreciated, the lack of an occasional complimentary drink is a deal breaker. One Star in this category
Clientele - Mostly an older, friendly crowd made up of regulars. Interesting conversation, without the drama and aggression of many other establishments. I've never truly witnessed any fighting or controversy. If you're looking for a meat-market or pick-up joint, this isn't for you, and I once again suggest wrigleyville and it's amazing array of Stepford Wives and cookie-cutter fratboys. The Bier Garten itself is a fantastic place to meet new and interesting people. 3.5 Stars here.
Overall - A charming, comfortable, unpretentious place which I still frequent because of the fresh Bier and Bier Garten which is outstanding. 4 Stars read more
