I will start by saying that I hate most airport food. I never am satisfied. I am so pleased to share that I LOVED the food at The Local HNL. I shared the Tofu Crunch Salad and the Teriyaki Chicken bowl. Both were super fresh !!!! The lettuce and all the goodies (tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers) in the Tofu Crunch salad were so fresh and delicious and the miso dressing was so tasty. The tofu was also super crunchy - well done!!!! The Teriyaki chicken bowl was equally high quality and tasty. Both dishes were also very large portions. They weren't inexpensive, but that's typical for airports - plus it's Hawaii!! The service was also terrific - granted, it was a slow day in the off season (April) in the airport, but it was nice and quiet. In the food wasteland that is airports, The Local was a shining star. Let me start off by saying this is airport food guys.. you aren't gonna get the ultimate dining experience because even tho this is a sit down restaurant they move quickly and efficiently that it feels like quick service. Everyone talks about how horrific the food was but I can only write on behalf of our two items, the mahi mahi tacos were flavored well and not dry at all, I did love the sauce it came with, just well put together with that fresh cilantro. Then the spicy crispy chicken was well liked by my husband and our waitress which I am butcher her name "Manet" was attentive, polite and always checked on us to make sure we were doing ok. Overall it's a good spot to grab something before you head out, don't make this your first meal when you arrive in Oahu.. that's why you flew all this way over here. This is where you stop to say goodbye gorgeous Oahu, thanks for the memories. The area is spacious so plenty of room to charge your phones, bring your luggage.. make the most of it right? Very conveniently located right in the center of the airport. The "Fine Food" sign at the entrance sparked a excitement despite the low rating. The staff were kind and welcoming. Everything tasted like a microwaveable meal. Korean Chicken Wrap: Papa John's boneless chicken bites from last night. Loco Moco: hard patty paired with flavorful mac and cheese that felt straight off a Walmart shelf. Sides: fresh-cut carrots and cucumbers straight out of a salad bag. Mahi: surprisingly decent -- the highlight of the meal. Rice was cooked properly. For the sake of the friendly staff, I truly hope the kitchen steps up its game. read more

Pretty average experience here. I waited for about 10 minutes to be seated, although it wasn't busy inside. Seems to be lack of staffing maybe. I sat at the bar, and saw there was a QR code to scan and order. I checked that menu out first on my phone. Then the waitress gave me a physical copy of a menu, but there was no explanation to order through my phone or through her. On the online ordering, it had a side caesar salad. I asked the waitress for one, and she was quick to say they don't do that here. Seems to be confusion with the two differing menus. I ordered a full size caesar salad, and it was very average. We came here when we were at the airport waiting for our plane to arrive. They have vegetarian options and so we decided to dine here. The food was really good. We ordered the avocado pesto flatbread and the tofu crunch salad. Prices were a little on the above average side, service was OK. Restaurant was empty and gigantic. Can't review much because I WANTED to sit and eat, but after standing unacknowledged for 5 minutes by the "wait to be seated" sign, a waitress who I saw see me standing there finally meandered over and told me it would be a 20-30 minute wait to be served in their 80% empty restaurant, and that food would take another 20-30 minutes after that. How does The Local have such a low rating on Yelp? For an airport place, it's pretty great. Prices are a bit lower than on Waikiki; food is unimaginative and not the most flavorful but just fine (especially considering you're in an airport, for Heaven's sake). Decent selection of eats, cooked to order and big portions. The service that we experienced (you order on your phone and they bring it to you and check on you constantly) was really terrific - on par with that at a fine-dining place. And the view of the Japanese Garden - well, how are you going to do better than that in an airport anywhere? read more

Next time you leave the island out of HNL swing by The Local for some local-style food. I usually grab something on my way to the airport but today I was rushing and did not have the time. Came here before our trip to LA. Waitress was an older aunty who wasn't very enthusiastic to be there. We ordered through our phones, my partner got the Loco Moco and I got the Beyond Burger. The Loco Moco was decent. I thought the gravy was good! It was rich and thick. I didnt try the patty but the mac salad felt heavy and not very tasty. The Beyond Burger was very disappointing. Not sure how but the patty was slightly raw, and pink in the middle. I highly recommend if you order this to ask for your patty to be cooked a bit more! The fries were even more disappointing. They were definitely not fresh, and soggy. Not sure if they were even left under a warming lamp. I love fries so this ruined my meal. I don't know what all the bad reviews are about, and I'm not going to take time to read them. But coming in here to get a bite to eat and kill some time is hands-down better than the admirals club upstairs. It's clean, friendly service, decent food, no pressure to leave quickly, you can't go wrong. The lounge upstairs is filthy and in here is completely the opposite. This place is pretty much everything you would want in an airport restaurant. And it's open late. Not much else is open at HNL at night, so this is a great option if you're waiting for a redeye. Their nachos are pretty good and so are their burgers for an airport. Obviously airport prices but we always have great service here. Came here because it was close to our gate. Our server was very nice and accommodating but the service there wasn't that great. And by service I mean internet service. I guess the establishment is pushing for QR codes and ordering/paying online except for the fact that it's almost a dead zone there with no free wifi. We had the hardest time loading the menu online (they were no pictures of the food we were ordering) so it was a little discouraging since I wasn't sure what I was going to get. Every time I added an order to the cart, something will happen and the server wouldn't load anymore. It'll prompt me to reload and when I do, I loose the item(s) I had previously added to my cart. At this point our server said she'll place the items in for us and all we'll have to do was pay online. We assumed it'll all work out. We ordered the pull pork nachos which was so delicious and the mahi mahi fish tacos (both recommended by our server). The tacos were a little too plain for me and I didn't like that the order came with plain chips. Overall the pull pork nachos were the best. While we were waiting for our order we noticed that everyone was having problems ordering/playing online. Luckily we were able to pay online and leave. Because of the lack of wifi in the establishment we were there for so much longer than we anticipated. I would come back because the nachos were good and our server was so sweet! My first time here and I was not disappointed. Thank you Dan O. for doing a great review.... His photos looked so delicious that I had try it the next time I went to the airport. I had a hard time finding them even after asking several airport employees . Finally figured out that they are located on the "mainland" terminal side of the airport. This was a hike from the new Inter-Island terminal, but worth the hike. You need to watch for them because it is easy to miss. It's a nice restaurant and they also do takeout. Which was good because I needed to hike back to the Inter-Island terminal. Our waitress was very nice and took our order quickly. The restaurant is very clean and pretty stylish. I ordered the Pulled Pork (Kalua Pig) Quesadilla and Fish & Chips. The only thing I didn't like was the pineapple in the Quesadilla, but it was very tasty. The fish was super fresh and crunchy. The menu is kind of pricey, but it is at the airport. I hope they are successfully and open up a restaurant beyond the airport. read more

Went here to get away from it all... I honestly think it's a better option than the Plumeria lounge of sadness but ... not by much? The service is somewhat surly. For no reason that I could figure, I was treated like a bum off the streeet who was ordering things but likely unable to pay for it. I got this feeling Iike maybe they thought I was in there to start some sort of trouble or be difficult. All I ordered was a beer and a pizza to go. Beer is beer. So that was good. Stopped in on our long layover for light lunch. Decent large casual dining, always love fish tanks! Friendly prompt service although they appreciate you using the scan code to order. Decided on draft beers and split the pulled pork nachos. Draft beer a whopping $12 for 20oz. and the nachos were $17 I believe. The nachos arrived quickly and looked great, although once we started diving in we realized the chips weren't warm. The liquid cheese and pork were though thank goodness. It actually was pretty darn good. Glad they served with sour cream and guacamole, tasty. Loved that they layered the cheese inside as well. A quick review for a quick stop, a beer and some plane food. We got our beer and ordered the Kalua Pork Sandwich with hoisin sauce on the side to take with us on our flight. Before we got up for our table we had eaten all but a couple of the fries and did taste the pork. Very good Kalua pork, that was obviously marinated and cooked with care. That sandwich with their coleslaw on top made for an in-flight dynamo when combined with our left over bag of chips. Dipping it in the hoisin sauce while in flight proved to be critical. This is an order and pay by QR code type restaurant, with a server that brings out your food. The coffee (and price) is not on the menu, which I found odd. The server offers coffee when you sit down. I asked about why the coffee wasn't an item you could order, and she said she would just put it on the bill once we were done. The bill came out and we had two watery drip coffees that cost TEN DOLLARS EACH. We felt this is a scam that you should be aware of. We got to the airport pretty early and had time to kill so we walked around and explored some of the shops and then came to the local to get some food. It was pretty heavy, priced at $19 and drowning in gravy. Not my cup of tea, but my fiancé was craving it so we ordered one and I had a few bites. Luckily staff is pretty chill here bc I ended up running over to the food court next door and grabbing some Pinkberry frozen yogurt and I was able to eat it at the table along side our loco moco.
