Five stars, and honestly, this is exactly the kind of place you hope to stumble into after a whale watching tour.
We had about a twenty-minute wait, which wasn't surprising considering the place was absolutely packed. Turns out there was a very good reason for that. We were looking for a genuine New England seafood restaurant to bring our out-of-town guests to, and this ended up being one of the closest spots to the harbor. Sometimes convenience disappoints. This definitely didn't.
The menu hit the sweet spot. Plenty of variety without feeling like somebody was trying to cram every food known to mankind onto twelve laminated pages. It still took me a while to decide because just about everything sounded worth ordering. Water hit the table almost immediately, and before long seven picky people--three picky kids, three picky adults, and me, whose standards begin and end with "is it edible?"--all found something they were excited about. We started with the mussels, and they disappeared so fast I barely remember they existed. Around the table there were burgers, steak tips, baked scallops... and not a single complaint. That's practically a medical miracle with this group.
Now, the Lobstermen's Platter deserves its own paragraph.
This thing showed up looking less like a meal and more like a challenge issued by the Atlantic Ocean. Fried lobster tails, shrimp, scallops, local haddock, clams, calamari... a pound and a half of seafood piled onto one plate. Every single bite tasted fresh, perfectly cooked, and somehow managed to stay crispy without drowning in grease. The lobster was sweet, the scallops were buttery, the haddock flaked apart with a fork, and the clams and calamari disappeared long before I was ready to admit I was full. I kept telling myself, "Just one more bite," until I looked down and realized I'd nearly polished off enough seafood to feed a small fishing crew. If you're the type who can't decide what to order, do yourself a favor and order this. It solves the problem for you.
The dining room was another pleasant surprise. Lots of windows overlooking the harbor, great natural light, and enough space between tables that it never felt like I was accidentally joining the conversations next to us. The restaurant was busy, but somehow it stayed comfortable and relatively quiet.
Our waitress--a blonde woman whose name I unfortunately didn't catch--was outstanding. Friendly, attentive, happy to answer questions, and gave recommendations that actually matched what we were looking for instead of steering us toward the most expensive thing on the menu. She also seemed pleasantly surprised that "please" and "thank you" still exist in Southern vocabulary. It was nice to be waited on by someone who genuinely seemed happy we were there.
We wanted to give our guests the classic New England seafood experience they had pictured before making the trip north, and The Lobster of Gloucester checked every box. Great food, great service, beautiful harbor views, and the kind of meal you'll still be thinking about on the drive home. I'd come back in a heartbeat. read more
