What: Stop 1 of 4 on Niagara mini crawl - Sarah L's 5 star faves Who: sarah l, Kat F, Dale M, Carleen L (who trekked all the way from Welland to join us!) Why: To determine hash brown[1] superiority This place is awesome. It's a no-nonsense diner that serves unpretentious, stick-to-your-ribs type of food at prices that'd make even penny-pinching parents say, "F*ck cooking at home. Let's go to The Lancer." FOOD The default breakfast is three! (not two) eggs, choice of bacon/sausage/ham, and toast for $3.45; add home fries for $1.45. I did a double take when I saw the menu prices and thought sarah l. drove us through a time warp back to 1982. Since sarah l. is a regular here, I copy-catted her order: 3 eggs sunny side up, extra crispy bacon, and home fries with extra spice. Everything was cooked perfectly but the home fries were the star attraction. I've never had home fries done this way but they were damn tasty. The taters were diced, parboiled, then deep-fried to yield crispy sides, and sprinkled with some mystery "spice." They were more like little nuggets of fat fries than the mushy skillet-fried potato chunks I'm used to. There's been much debate as to what this mystery spice is on the home fries but I think I figured it out; it's the leftover powder at the bottom of a can of Planters Cheez Curls with some extra dried herb mix thrown in. I'm not sure if sarah l. knew this about me but I friggin' LOVE orange "cheez" snacks so by extension, I LOVED these home fries. SERVICE Friendly diner servers--not the surly kind full of back-sass VIBE Think Lanford Lunchbox from "Roseanne" run by a sweet Greek émigré; the kitsch of the medieval knight theme is unintentional MISCELLANEOUS I like the sign outside written in what sarah l. calls a "Flintstones font." Peruse the menu for hidden Easter eggs while you wait for you food: - Pancakes...........................................$6.75 - Half Order (you do the math).............$5.25 - Plain ol' Omelette - just the 3 eggs, and no imagination - Mediterranean Liver Dinner: Fresh mushrooms, green peppers, blue diamonds, yellow moons, green clovers...just kidding! If you're within a 20-mile radius of this place, f*ck cooking at home. Get breakfast at The Lancer. ============================================== [1] sarah l. calls them "hash browns" but hash browns to me are the kind of taters you get with McDonald's breakfasts so I'll heretofore call them "home fries."

The Lancer Special (eggs, homefries, sliced gyro meat, tzatziki sauce, 2 slices of toast)

I've driven past this place for years thinking it was a complete dive. My dad used to always say how popular it was "back in the day" but it looked like there hadn't been too much changing there since the 70's. I finally went for the first time recently and have a new breakfast favourite. I had the Lancer Special which I believe was two eggs, homefries, gyro meat(surprisingly good) and tzatziki sauce. The entire meal was great and was cheap. There are options that will fill you up for as little as $3.75 so you can't go wrong!

So, from the outside, this place looks like a dump. But, you know, the parking lot is completely packed, so that is always a good sign. Inside, it is pretty shabby, too. Don't let the shabbiness of the place turn you away, though, because this place is awesome. The owner was also our waiter, and served us with humor and attentiveness. This is definitely a place that is a local favorite, there are plenty of people who sat down and didn't even need menus. Granted, it's not a huge menu in general, just your basic breakfast things, and some lunch stuff too. I got Eggs Benedict, and Lee was in a lunch mood, so he got a hot turkey sandwich. Both were excellent. The Hollandaise was freshly made, with a nice tart tang that can be hard to find. There is some magic dust on the home fries, that is a little sweet and spicy, similar to Old Bay but not the same. Lee's sandwich was also delicious. I stole a couple of fries and fished a little bit of gravy off of his plate, both were great. We both resisted licking our plates, but that is only because we pretend we are adults. I'll definitely be back! And you should go too, if you're in town!

My wife and I order from here a lot. Eggs benny is our go to, how ever today was just crapy food. We ordered from skip the dishes. When we opened our try's the eggs where over cooked and the bread was not toasted like it should be! I called she said the toast was toasted I said I don't think I so. Then proceed to say well maybe you should just order from us. I said so the food would be better if I did not use skip? She said no we could give you a refund then. Which I thought was bad customer service . They offered nothing to us was rude and no respect what so ever. Won't be going back or ordering from there again. Get your s$@t to

Anyways, we came on a Thursday night in December and they were pretty busy. Love that for them. The one thing I love is that the servers and most people working there were Greek. My bf (who is Greek) and I judge the authenticity of Greek restos based on if they have Greek workers or owners. Luckily, this place has both. I was even able to practice my Greek with our server who was so sweet. We learned a little about her life here and in Greece. My bf ordered the chicken gyro dinner and I knew I wouldn't be able to eat a dinner on my own, so I figured I would just eat some of his lol. I did also order a pork skewer for myself, as it's my preferred meat at Greek restos. Sadly, they don't have a pork skewer dinner. Our server brought out the salad that comes with the dinner first. As you can see, it's a very generous portion and my bf and I easily shared it. It was dressed just right. The chicken gyro meat kinda fell short. We didn't really enjoy it. We didn't love the flavours. The pork skewer, however, was just right. It was seasoned perfectly and juicy. Paired with the tzatziki was Greek perfection. We also really enjoyed the rice. My bf said, just by looking at it, you could tell it was good. The potato's were good too. Overall, it was a good meal and we will be returning. My bf said he wouldn't order the chicken gyro dinner again but there are many more items on the menu that he would try. The only thing they're missing on the menu is my fave, fasolakia! We also ended up getting a piece of galektoboureko to go and this was excellent. The thickness of the custard was exactly how I like it and the phyllo was perfect. It was easy to cut and stayed in tact. Sometimes the phyllo gets so soaked in honey that the whole piece comes off then you cut it. It had hints of orange zest in the custard. The only downside was it was mad expensive for the slice. It was $10. Overall, a great experience and we are looking forward to coming back!

The menu offers great variety of Greek cuisine and is split into lunch and dinner menu. We ordered "Saganaki" for appetizer and "Kebob Combo" and "Octopus Dinner" for main. We replaced potatoes and rice with cooked vegetables. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. For dessert, we ordered the delicious "Baklava Sundae" and enjoyed Greek Baklava with vanilla ice cream. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. The staff are friendly, especially George made our lunch memorable.

Two souvlaki platters, totalling just under $40. Upon getting home and opening the containers we were severely underwhelmed with what we got. A small scoop of rice and three quarters of a whole potato, next to one skewers worth of meat. It also came with bread and a salad, all of which still equalling a sad portion to have spent the amount of money we did. We called the restaurant right away and spoke our concerns, asking if this was a regular portion... The lady on the other end of the phone stated yes, it was correct. We asked if we could return it as we were unhappy and she proceeded on a rant about how they would not take it back because they wouldn't be able to do anything with it, how we must have bigger appetites than usual, and what did we expect? I have been to Joe Feta's and for the same price received at minimum three times as much food. Every time I tried to speak she spoke over me, even started raising her voice and threatened to hang up on me. Needless to say, I finished my entire meal not long ago and I am sitting here with a rumbling belly. (Not that it matters, but I weigh under 120 lbs, so not like I usually eat a ton...) To be honest, the chicken was very bland on top of it all. Will not be returning.

But after we'd ordered and got our meals, she kind of forgot about us. We were trying to catch her attention to let her know we wanted our bill for a while. It took us a long time to be able to pay. Walking home, we spotted Yianni's storefront and resolved to head there for breakfast in the morning - it looked cozy, and they had a breakfast menu plastered right outside! Arriving was a totally different experience, however. To be fair, we were there on a wednesday morning - but we were literally the only diners there (and the town was bustling with some sort of photography group...hundreds of people with cameras? Who knows). I was initially excited for what I was assuming to be a great little greasy-spoon greek breakfast spot. Turns out I was wrong on that account. The waitress ushered us to our table, asking if we would like a coffee. Of course, we said yes before even sitting down - however I would later find out that coffee was $2.50 a cup for mediocre diner-style brew. Ehhh, not impressed, and the way she said it I assumed (like at plenty of breakfast spots) that it was included. My fault for assuming, but whatever. Anyhow, when she came back I was quite excited to order the egg breakfast. I don't eat meat (and there was no plain egg dish without it), so I asked if I might be able to sub the bacon for another side, or an extra egg, or anything really. Bowl of fruit? whatever. Her response kind of bothered me, however: "Absolutely no substitutions." Seriously? Who says that? Roll it off your tongue, right now. You just -feel- rude. Needless to say I was disenchanted at the idea of paying $7 for two eggs and toast (no coffee, homefries extra, of course). After her little rebuttal, she said matter-of-factly that "if you don't eat meat, you should get an omelette." $10-13 for the omelette. Well, OK. $13 for breakfast is no big deal. Oh wait, that doesn't come with homefries either? Grumpily, my girlfriend and I each ordered a side of homefries for an extra $1.50 each. To her credit, the omelette didn't take long to make and it was in front of me pretty soon. There was plenty of feta in my Mediterranean omelette, and it was pretty tasty. The homefries, however, were FROM A BAG. We're talking McCain/Cavendish variety here. Not only that, they BURNED THEM into crunchy little cubes of grease, with little-to-no fluffy potato interior. It was actually like eating grease-soaked potato chips. I had heartburn for HOURS. I was unimpressed when the bill unceremoniously showed up at $38. I'm sorry, but $5 for two uninspiring coffees, over $15 per omelette... ...I would have paid that for an incredible, fresh, lovely breakfast at some inn by the lake. But given the atmosphere and the service and the quality of what I actually put in my mouth... ...PASS.

My wife had eggs scrambled, and my son and I had them poached. They were perfectly poached - it looks like they have a machine for poaching, since they come out in a perfect cup shape. They are well cooked, with just the right amount of liquid yolk that I like. Here's the problem - it costs extra to get eggs poached. 2 eggs, sausage or bacon, toast and homefries is about $6, but if you want them poached, it's $7 and there are no homefries - have to pay another $1 or $1.50 extra for that. Want Rye toast? That's more money too. When I ordered my food, my poached eggs came on top of my rye toast - making the toast soggy. Look, I know some people might just be making their own egg on toast sandwich, but that can't be most people. Leave the eggs on the side (There was plenty of room on the plate) and let people put it on the bread if that's what they want. The service was great, and the food itself was decent - pretty good, actually. But the upcharges make this place not one I'll visit again.
