These Czech style kolaches are wonderful hand food treats. For us that are from Hawaii it's similar to what we have on our Chinese influence Manapua or Baked Bao breads. So many options here from chorizo sausage to ham to hotdog biscuit and gravy filling to dessert flavors. I wanted to try them a but just had lunch so grabbed a little sweet tooth dessert. Was and always craving custard so ended up with what was close with a twist. Got me a apple Bavarian Cream. Had the option to have warmed. It was nicely done not really hot just warm enough. Bread was good not overly heavy nor light and filling amount was perfect. Not overly sweet for a Bavarian cream plus the apple added a little different flavor to it. The cashier/server was polite and quick. It was busy in the drive thru but she did a great job of balancing that with walk-in customers. The store was clean. The bathroom was clean and the floors even have glitter lol I got the brisket and mashed potato kolache and the Bavarian cream kolache. Both were good but the sweet one was my favorite. I feel like the brisket one needed a bit more flavor. I also got a cup of coffee which comes from Buzzed Goat which is right in the same plaza. I got it with oat milk and caramel syrup. The coffee was ok, but this isn't a coffee shop so I didn't have high expectations. The combo for a sweet kolache, savory kolache, and a coffee was $8.25 plus $.50 for the coffee upgrade. Not bad. I drive from Arcadia for Kolache Cafe. Awesome Kolaches w/a dizzying choice of stuffing (yes, I said stuffing as opposed to filling because they're stuffed with magical goodness) and the nicest staff you could hope for. Still can't decide which I like better, the Poppy or the Poppy Cheesecake... I guess I'll have to go back next week and get more to try and reach a final conclusion. read more

*Disclaimer: I've never heard of kolaches before, much less had them.* Bf and I were intrigued every time we stopped by Moku. Finally bf decided to pick some up along with his Moku. I like that the box is labeled to reflect which kolache is which. A nice touch if you get the filled/savory kolaches and it can be difficult to discern which is which. The box also includes reheating directions! Now for the kolaches. We tried the jalapeno kolache first. I reheated it for about 30 seconds in the microwave. I had no idea what was inside. The answer is a thick hot dog. It was good. Next, the raspberry, reheated for about 20 seconds this time. For me it was underwhelming. It's basically a bread roll with a dollop of raspberry. Which is good when you get the raspberry, otherwise, it's a bread roll. The kolaches were good in an average way. Nothing was wrong about them, they just aren't the pastry(?) for me. read more

Fast forward almost 8 months later .. and now I've been here several times. My favorite has been the Potato, Egg & Cheese Kolache. The puffy dough has nice flavor & there's a good amount of filling. We've tried several sweet ones too - both just fruit & fruit + cheesecake. I personally like the ones that have cheesecake more. The size of these is a little deceiving, they seem small but are quite filling! If you're looking for a particular flavor, you may have to get there early, or do a pre-order. I've swung by and gone both in-store and the drive-thru. Everyone has been very friendly. They warm up your order, and you're on you're way! Overall, definitely worth a stop. read more

This is the first of a few Kolache Cafes that will be opening up in the Valley. A kolache is a circular open-faced pastry with fruit in the center. Kolaches were first introduced to the U.S. by Czech immigrants over a century ago. The Kolache Cafe serves both sweet and savory pastries. They have a variety of fruit flavors to choose from with a few that are combined with cheesecake. On the savory side, the menu is pretty large. Some of the choices that they have are breakfast items, pizza, meatball, pulled pork and jalapeño sausage. The sausage and gravy sounds bomb. I'll be looking forward to some of the seasonal ones around the holidays when they bring out turkey & cranberry and pumpkin pie kolaches. The Kolache Cafe itself is pretty nice inside. You can view all those yummy pastries behind the cashier on display as you order. If you want to take some home, you can grab a variety box of a dozen or half dozen to go. They recommend warming them in a microwave before you eat them. I stopped in night and got a half dozen of both sweet and savory kolaches. Unfortunately I came near closing time and they were running out of many of the popular ones. But the cheesecake ones I ordered were really good. I was a little bummed when I got home and noticed that a couple of the kolaches in my box were the wrong ones. But I still ate them because I was craving them all day. They make for a nice little snack! In the future, I can see myself stopping by here for a pastry and a coffee in the mornings when they open up more locations closer to me. read more

Today was the first time trying the Kolache Cafe and it was just fabulous. I purchased a lot of both the savory and sweet kolaches. These are from Eastern European so a lot of the countries make variations of them. You can't go wrong. This place was packed at 10:45am. They serve breakfast as well as lunch/dinner. We had this before from a family member bringing them so me and my partner decided to go after a haircut. Man their stuff is great. So many choices on the types between sweet and savory. Those are the real deal and authentic, we generally have the sweet but on occasion get the savory kolaches. Today at the Kolache Cafe in Ahwatukee we purchased both the sweet and savory. Purchased 6 Savory, 2 - Sausage and Cheese, 2 - Hot Dog and 2 - Pepperoni Pizza Kolaches. Out of the 3 flavor savory, would choose first, Sausage and Cheese and then the Pepperoni Pizza. The dough that is wrapped around the meat reminds me of a biscuit dough. We purchased 3 sweet kolaches, Apricot, Blueberry Cheesecake and Raspberry Cheesecake. I have to mention the service first off. The girl at the checkout counter was running between Drive thru which was constantly busy and doing double duty at the register. I wish I had caught her name because she did it all by herself and with a smile on her face. We were in the area and had to stop to check out what a koloche was. It's basically savory or sweet in a round ball of goodness. You can get a mixed dozen or just what you need for a meal or dessert. The many choices all looked appetizing and appealing. The only thing I didn't like was that it was microwaved to make warm. When I got to my dessert portion of the chocolate Bavarian cream it was a bit congealed which didn't exactly look appetizing at that moment. But like a true champ I powered through and ate it. Maybe because of the appearance I wasn't blown away by the taste. The meatball as my entree was good enough to satisfy me. Others might need more then one. Hubby went with the sausage one and found it to be "ok". His code for "if I lived closer I might stop by again but I'm not blown away by it". The restaurant was clean. I personally would love one closer to home because I'd love to try a variety of them. I think this is the only one in AZ. Worth a stop for breakfast, lunch and certainly dessert. The savory kolaches are like a stuffed fluffy dinner roll. This is the comfort food you dream of - though your results may vary depending on filling. I got the brisket mashed potato with jalapeno and it was fantastic. My only regret was only getting one. I wonder how they reheat? I didn't like the sweet one as much -- it was really sweet. The workers in the back are more worried about gossiping and listening to music instead of actually working not sure if there is new management or what happened but quality has gone down. What a treat.. a friend posted a shoutout to this place and I felt the need to try this new spot out.. so glad I did as they have free delivery during the covid lockdown Their menu changes daily (not sure if that's the norm or just during this period). I decided on the pepperoni and the cheesecake for my first delivery.. both were delicious.. the pepperoni was stuffed with cheese, sauce and pepperoni.. the cheesecake version had a warm cream cheese filling .. both paired nicely with the semi-sweet light dough. YES YES YES this is itttttt Upon arrival to PHX, my family and I were in the mood for a portable, filling, satisfying, yet relatively light meal... and THIS WAS IT! Back home, we have like zero Eastern European restaurants, so this was our first time trying kolache. It reminded us of Hawaiian manapua/siopao, except that it was way less oily. Savory options go for $2.98 each, and sweet options go for $1.98 each. On the savory end, we tried the brisket mashed potato, southwest (ham, egg, cheese, salsa, and jalapeno), and spinach, egg, and feta cheese kolache. On the sweet end, we tried the maple cream barvarian, chocolate barvarian, and caramel apple kolache. The savory options reigned supreme to me, but the sweet ones were great, too! After having passed by many times, it was overdue to eat here. I had the #3 combo for about 7 bucks. Any two kolaches and a drink. For me, the spinach, egg and feta version outshined the brisket and mashed potatoes version. Ever get those moments of impulsivity and you're like "I shouldn't do this, but I'm going to anyways?" Yeah that was me making my stop here trying to avoid 5 o'clock traffic on a Friday after a vet visit and a stop for cupcakes. I really like kolanches after I had them at a stop in at the Buccees gas station on my road trip from Florida to Arizona and wasn't sure where I would be able to find another place that sells them. However low and behold, here's a place that sells yummy treats! I will say they are a little smaller than the ones at Buccees and a little more expensive. Yet! This doesn't mean they are any less delicious. I love that they have a mix and match pack for $16 that you can choose between sweet and savory. I really enjoyed the Bavarian cream, ham and Swiss, and the sausage and cheese kolanches. The location also has a drive thru which was super convenient as my pup was still with me from our vet visit. The cashier was super friendly and outgoing! I had questions about storing and reheating and she was super patient with me about my questions. I had NO idea that a few miles down from ASU would I find a way to cure my cravings for a good ol Texas Kolache breakfast. Kolaches seem to be something that not many people know about, but when you finally get to taste the most delicious rolled up food, you crave it more than ever. I'm here weekly with my mom- it's become "our spot". It's a great place to grab a quick lunch and the AC is always at 100% which is a blessing in this godawful state. In the winter, there are a few tables out on the patio which are a great spot to soak up some sunshine. The food is 4/5 - like a "gourmet hot pocket". Tons of choices, sweet or savory.
