Spicy Curry Chicken, Rice and Peas, Cabbage, and Rum Cake

The Jerk Joint is undoubtedly my favorite restaurant in Appleton. It's challenging to choose a favorite dish since everything is simply delicious! The owners and employees maintain a consistently positive attitude. The homemade cakes and desserts are a must-try! They are also quick to ready my takeout orders, which is perfect for my lunch break.

At some point I bookmarked The Jerk Joint as a place to try because I love jerk chicken, but forgot about it until it appeared as a suggested place on social media. Coincidentally, I happened to be in Appleton a few days later so I made sure to stop by. I ordered à la carte jerk chicken and jerk ribs to go. For $9 each I feel like you get a good amount of food when you order the meats à la carte. Both the chicken and ribs had a distinct smokey flavor like they were cooked in a smoker, which is good. Unfortunately, and I could be very well wrong about this first part, neither meat looked or tasted like it was seasoned with a rub before it was smoked and the jerk sauce wasn't very thick, so a lot of the flavor was just the smokiness from the smoker. I didn't think the sauce had much heat to it, which was disappointing cause to me that's part of the point of eating Jamaican food. I don't know if I would go back. Having grown up in the Fox Valley there are certain places that I love stopping at when I'm up there, and if I'm on the fence about a place like I am with The Jerk Joint, it didn't wow me enough for a second chance.

Some of the best comfort food I have ever had. We are from out of town and saw the good reviews and were not disappointed.

Solid little spot tucked in a small strip mall. Quite the variety of dishes on the menu and they pump out items over the lunch hour! After struggling to decide, I settled on the Spicy Curry Chicken Bowl and a side of fries. The bowl was very solid. Not the best curry dish, but still comfortably in the good category. The fries were perfectly average, the seasoning was good but they needed a bit more crisp to really be anything more. All in all, I'd recommend for a spicy fix and think there are probably some hidden gems elsewhere on the menu!

I was in town for a few days. I had a taste for something Caribbean and came across this restaurant. It had decent reviews so I decided to give it a whirl. Service: I called ahead, the person that answered the phone was very pleasant and even more nice in person. 10/10 Food: I ordered the curry chicken bowl with rice and peas and cabbage. I also got a rum cake for dessert! Always need a little sweet to balance out the heat. The bowl was just okay. I felt it had more heat then actual flavor. The rice was slightly softer than what I was used too. 6/10 . However the rum cake was moist and packed with flavor ! 8/10. I wish I got an extra slice. Ambiance: Very clean inside , decor was modest and traditional of a Caribbean restaurant. 7/10

I have never written a review on yelp before but this place deserves it. The man who was helping us brought out samples for us to try before ordering. This is hands down the best food I've ever had and the nicest staff!

A special offered by the Jerk Joint. Two Doobies and a panful of tacos! Great stuff!

Going to start my review by griping about Yelp. I really want to give 4.5 stars but have to error on the upside with a 5 star. That said, we have ordered several times from the Jerk Joint. The service has been good, but a little slow. On the other hand, the food has been great! The Jerk Joint does a great job with their social media. Follow them to see what kind of tasty food is being prepared in their kitchen. We have tried a little bit of everything and found it to taste great and to be filling. You'll be so full, you'll probably skip your next meal. If you are worried about the food being too spicy, unless you are really heat sensitive, the food is warm and flavorful, not too spicy. If you are on the fence about the food, get off the fence and dig in; you won't regret it!

I like to believe that places with great ratings are legit - let me tell you that this place IS. Tucked away in the Wisconsin winter wonderland, this place is authentic in every way. They create their custom jerk seasoning and even jar it for sale. Went here for lunch with my brother after seeing a facebook post which read "The Caribbean La Jefa!! Hand sliced Jerk Pork Shoulder With A Chipotle Pulled Pork, Topped With a Red Stripe Beer Brat Covered With Our Home made Jerk Aioli". How do you merge a Wisconsin beer brat with Jamaican jerk, I don't know how they did it but this was amazing. I had the spicy habanero pig sandwich personally and it was the perfect amount of heat. ABSOLUTELY enjoyed our lunch and can verify those great ratings are in fact legit. This is a must try location. P.S. I forgot to take pics initially, pardon the bites out of the sandwich.

    Doobie!

I've been here 3 times now while in town for work, every time I leave I think that it's some of the best food I've had. Like if I had to pick a last meal this should be in the conversation. If your reading reviews right now to figure out what to have for dinner. Just come here and enjoy. Friendly service and great food. I only have a picture of a Doobie cause I ate my burger too fast.

The local Jamaican restaurant that we frequent closed a few months ago. We haven't been able to find another joint to replace it. Thank goodness to Yelp for always coming through for us. My palate does not tolerate spicy foods much but I'm surprised I'm able to handle the heat from here. Especially the doobies. It's packed with shredded meats, cabbage, and other vegetables. It was definitely the spiciest item I ate here. Husband got the Spicy Chicken Curry and I had the Brown Stew Chicken. Both had a little bit of spice. The meats were properly flavored. I would have preferred larger pieces of chicken instead of shredded. The rice and peas plus the cabbage side were wonderful. I would definitely return. The service was fast and friendly. The employees all wore masks. The location of the establishment was easy to find. It's also very clean and had the wonderful aroma of meat stewing. A must try for the area.

Stopped in today to grab a couple of orders of pulled pork and was introduced to "The Double". This... taco like dish is a vegetarian paradise! From the outrageously delicious fried shell to all the savory kale, chickpeas etc. I really don't explain it very well but it a must try. So good and unlike anything I've ever had before. Staff there is always awesome! Thanks

I was in Appleton for 4 days and 3 nights at a conference and staying at the Hilton across the street. I had seen Rye and talked myself out of going there on my first night. On night 2 I was fully committed to "treating myself" as I was traveling alone for work and just wanted a nice meal. My husband is a manager at a fine dining steakhouse in Scottsdale and I truly missed the "family" feeling that I get from sitting at his bar waiting for him to close up. The feeling of "I'm home". As soon as I started talking with Jonathan, he instantly recreated the feeling that I was missing from home and made me feel like a regular. After finishing my drink, I told him how much I appreciated his hospitality. Before saying my goodbyes, I briefly discussed going to another restaurant closer to the water on my last night in town so I could see the views before leaving. When the next day came and my conference ended, I walked out of my hotel and found myself walking in the opposite direction of the water and right into Rye. I ended up eating dinner, having a few drinks and even getting to know other regulars as Jonathan has such a welcoming aura everyone quickly becomes family. Having this kind of hospitality is a talent. It is not only special but almost impossible to accomplish in just one encounter. Traveling in an unfamiliar state can sometimes leave you feeling very much like a tourist, but Jonathan had an incredible ability to make me feel like a regular from the moment I sat down. He was welcoming, personable, attentive, and genuinely seemed to enjoy making sure that every individual at the fully seated bar had a great experience. Great food can bring you into a restaurant, but people like Jonathan are what make you remember it--and want to come back. Highly recommend!

f you're in Sheboygan and not eating at Black Pig, respectfully, what are we doing?…read moreThis meal had me wondering why I don't make the trip to Sheboygan more often! Black Pig was such a great find, and everything we tried was packed with flavor. We started with the White Truffle & Black Pepper Bacon Fries, because regular fries simply weren't invited. The truffle and black pepper added so much flavor, and these were the perfect way to kick things off. Next up was the Shellfish Rangoon, filled with crab, scallop, and shrimp and topped with tahini-cabbage slaw and pineapple sweet & sour. The combination of flavors was unexpected but worked so well. Then came the Black Pig Cheeseburger, an 8 oz Niman Ranch USDA All-Natural Prime Beef burger with Hooks 1-year aged cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a house-made brioche bun. The burger was flavorful, juicy, and satisfying. I finished with the Endless Rhubarb Summer mocktail, made with rhubarb shrub, lime, simple syrup, ginger ale, and dehydrated lime. It was refreshing and the perfect way to round out the meal. The service was amazing from start to finish. The staff was friendly, attentive, and welcoming, which made the entire experience even better. I also loved how spacious and clean the restaurant was. It has a comfortable atmosphere that makes you want to sit down, enjoy your meal, and stay awhile. Overall, Black Pig is absolutely worth the drive from Madison. As you might expect, the menu is decidedly pig-forward, although there are plenty of other excellent options. The Wine Spectator- recognized wine list is absolutely incredible, featuring many bottles you would be hard-pressed to find even at high-end restaurants in much larger cities. We started with the Belly Belly Nice appetizer, featuring thick-cut Duroc bacon served with three dipping sauces. All were delicious, but the whole-grain mustard was an absolute must. The duck confit leg and thigh was ridiculously good, easily one of the five best duck dishes I've ever had. Others at our table enjoyed the Big Pig Burger, which was juicy and packed with unique flavors. Another standout was the grilled Ibérico pork pluma, which was prepared beautifully. I would make a special trip back to Sheboygan just to eat here again. It was truly that good!

I recently had dinner at KC's with my father, and after thinking about my first experience there, I…read morerealized I may have been a little too hard on the restaurant in my initial review. I allowed one or two things that weren't necessarily to my personal taste to weigh too heavily on my overall impression--especially when I hadn't really given myself the opportunity to explore much of their menu. So, rather than writing KC's off, I'm actually excited to go back! This was my first visit and my dad's second. He had already spoken very highly of KC's and encouraged me to give it a try. My father and I share a love of good food, but like anyone else, we have our own individual tastes and preferences. Part of the fun of trying a new restaurant is discovering what works for you--and sometimes that takes more than one visit. First, KC's deserves a lot of credit for its atmosphere. I found it extremely welcoming and comfortable, with décor that blends a classic feel with a more modern touch. We chose a booth inside, and the seating was very comfortable. They also have a really nice outdoor dining area. Personally, the one thing that would keep me from choosing the patio is that smoking is allowed outside. That's simply a preference of mine. When I eat outdoors, I really enjoy the fresh air and would rather not have cigarette smoke nearby. I'd love to see KC's reconsider that policy someday, but I also understand that restaurants have to make decisions based on what works for their establishment and customers. It wasn't overly busy during our visit, and we were greeted and seated quickly. Our server, who was also tending the bar, was friendly, welcoming, and took good care of us. Now, about my burger--and this is where I have to own my mistake! I ordered the mushroom and Swiss burger knowing full well that I'm not particularly fond of cremini mushrooms. I decided I was going to give them another chance, and, well... apparently my taste buds haven't changed their minds! That isn't KC's fault. I ordered something containing an ingredient I already knew wasn't really for me. What I absolutely appreciated was that KC's uses quality, fresh hamburger rather than frozen patties. That makes a difference. For my own taste, I might go a little lighter on the seasoning, but again, that comes down to personal preference. I also sampled several tacos, and this is where things got interesting! The Ch-Ching Chicken Taco was fantastic. That one was easily a winner for me. It was flavorful, delicious, and I absolutely loved the sweet Thai chili sauce. I will DEFINITELY be ordering those again. I also tried the Alta Fish Taco, which I thought was good, although it had a little more heat than my taste buds are accustomed to. The Steak Fajita Taco was good as well, but once again had a bit of a kick for me. Someone who enjoys spicier food may absolutely love them. My dad ordered the veggie burger, which he had been raving about before we even arrived. It lived up to his expectations, and he loved it. He also tried the Brusslin Taco and really enjoyed that as well. At the end of the day, my father and I had a genuinely nice evening together at KC's. Looking back, I don't think it was entirely fair for me to let one burger that didn't suit my personal tastes influence my opinion of an entire restaurant--especially when there were other things I tried that I really enjoyed. Restaurants have menus for a reason: not everything is going to appeal to everyone, and sometimes you simply have to find your dish. That's why I'm looking forward to giving KC's another visit and exploring more of the menu. I already have my eye on the Rodeo Burger for next time! And those Ch-Ching Chicken Tacos? Oh, I'm definitely coming back for more of those.

Weirdest name for a restaurant with some of the best food in town!…read more I've been to Mother's Day Restaurant a few times now, as I frequently travel to this area. What a great place! When you walk in, you are truly walking in to a family diner that oozes of home cooked goodness. Food cooked to order that is delicious every single time. My personal favorite, as I've been there for lunch a few times, is the BLT. Sounds simple, right? I love a good BLT. Simple by design yet some places still manage to screw it up. Not Mother's Day. They got it right on target. Perfectly toasted bread. Crispy crunch salty bacon-y bacon. Crisp fresh lettuce and a perfectly ripe tomato to balance it all out. Can you taste it? I want it.....now! The servers at Mother's Day are about the friendliest group of people you will ever encounter in your life. Guaranteed. Anyone that says any different needs to look in the mirror. Always attentive, friendly and helpful. When you walk in, you'll notice the bakery case. Pastries, cakes, pies....whatever is fresh and in house that day. On my last visit, I noticed the carrot cake in the case. So I asked about it and was assured that it was incredible. Well, good luck cramming down a piece of anything after you finish your meal at Mother's Day. Did you say, to-go? I'm listening.... They sold me on the carrot cake and guaranteed that it was amazing. So, later that evening, I confirmed their words and that carrot cake, was in fact........AMAZING! Would I go back? There's not a lot in this particular area in Horicon, WI. But that's the beauty and the secret of Mother's Day. You don't need anywhere else. You could put 2 or 3 fast food junk chain restaurants all on the same block and I'd never even notice them, fully knowing that there is a gem of a restaurant called Mother's Day just waiting to serve up some delicious home cooked food.
