Ok, so like I live a couple blocks from Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles in Mid-City, Los Angeles and I am very familiar with this type of restaurant. That being said, I really like this place. Had the chance to swing by Cozzy Corner in downtown Appleton for a quick lunch. I had heard great things about the place, so I was super excited. Atmosphere: Perfect. For a soul food spot, the decor is spot on. The interior is outlined with various albums (vinyl) of some legendary Motown artists. Most of the tables have a theme (ie:the Michael Jackson table, Whitney Houston table, etc), which adds to the feel of the establishment. Soulful music feels the air, setting the mood for some good southern cuisine. Service: The staff is incredibly friendly and were quick to show us to our table and provide menus, with a quick breakdown of their personal faves. The order (what we placed): 2 meat (Spicy Catfish, Spicy Chicken, with fried Okra & Jambalaya 1 chicken and 2 waffles combo with a side of Hushpuppies 1 meat (Sausage with Mac & cheese and fries) 2 meat (Fried Chicken and Catfish, with Mac & Cheese) The order (what we received): 2 meat (Regular Catfish, Spicy Chicken, with fried Okra & Jambalaya 1 chicken and 2 waffles combo with a side of Hushpuppies 1 meat (Sausage with Mac & cheese and fries) 2 meat (Fried Chicken and Catfish, with Jambalaya) The food didn't take long to arrive and before I discuss the quality, let me say you HAVE to order the Kool Aid! It is amazing!! It's the perfect balance of sugar and water. Review: Catfish (7/10) - the batter is pretty traditional without much seasoning. However, the ranch dip enhances the flavor. Spicy Chicken (0/10)- I was thinking this would be fried chicken with some spice in the batter. This was actually fried chicken that was doused in Red Hot's sauce and sprinkled with some chili powder. Fried Okra (7/10)- Typical fried okra, no real seasoning that sets them apart Jambalaya (3/10)- This was purely a texture thing. There was very little rice in the bottom of the bowl and the dish was very salty. Chix & Waffles (10/10)- The dish came with very large and soft waffles, plus a perfectly fried thigh and leg. The food was fairly low quality, but what I noticed most was both how dirty it was inside and how poor the service was. It was like everything in there - except the only place they cleaned, the tabletops - was covered in a veneer of stickiness and grease, and the garbage can in the bathroom was overflowing onto the ground. Honestly kind of disappointing. The ambiance is fun and the service was good (although the server insisted on refilling our drinks despite the fact that we said no thanks--they were trying to be nice, but it did result in the drinks being wasted). The food, unfortunately, was pretty bland except for the gumbo. Nothing stood out to us as being worth a second visit, not even the chicken, the waffles, or the Mac n' cheese. With the somewhat limited menu, I wouldn't call this a full southern or soul food restaurant (I've lived in TX and SC) but don't let that stop you. My first experience at this place was just ok. The menu had a little bit of everything when it comes to soul food. We ordered several things to give them a try. The restaurant is open for dine-in and take-out, which is what we chose. Everybody had masks on except one employee. Masks are required to walk in. They were having some technical issue when we arrived so it took them a few minutes to find our order. The order came out fresh and on time after all. The smell in the restaurant and outside will get your tastebuds going for sure! Cat Fish sandwich 2/5 I requested the toppings (coleslaw, hot sauce and tartar) on the side so the sandwich wouldn't be soggy by the time we got home. After seeing what you get, I would definitely say the food here is overpriced. Red beans and rice were spot on (I might order a big bowl of them next time), fried okra was fine, just pre breaded and frozen not fresh. I enjoyed the cornbread. Eugene was my waiter. Stopped in here on a Saturday evening. We waited about 15 minutes for a table. This wasn't unreasonable for a small place at peak dinner time. Our order was the Kings platter and a bowl of gumbo. We chose the spicy fried chicken for our choice with the combo The Good: catfish, fried okra, Mac and cheese, corn bread. Atmosphere was fantastic. Definitely my style of music and place. Marcia our waitress! The Solid: ribs, smoked sausage Not My Style: gumbo. It was more of a brown gravy type texture. It wasn't spicy like other gumbos. Maybe just because a different style then I'm used to. It was loaded with white rice. Spicy Chicken: I was expecting a spice in the breading. Our first experience was better than the second time we returned. All I have to say is, parking may be difficult to find because we tried coming a few times and because it's in downtown, we couldn't find available parking. Is it worth it? Yes. What's more annoying is the wait time for the food. We've waited over 25 minutes for the food here once. They have never ran out of anything that we wanted so that's a plus. Pictures of soul singers decorating the tables and the walls. The smell of smoked meats fill the air. They have a lot of things on their menu so pace yourself. The mac and cheese and collard greens are our favorite side dishes. My husband always get the meat plates with fried chicken and BBQ ribs or pulled pork. Also the chicken and waffles are legit. Our server was interactive and checked up on us regularly to refill our drinks. He made sure everything was tasting well. Two out of the two times we came to eat in, we couldn't finish our food because they are a large portion. The ambience is laid back with good music. I love a good soul food place and I was really excited to have collard greens, mac n cheese, sausage and some spicy chicken. The staff promptly seated us and we ordered. Food came out quickly. The real star of this meal was that chicken. It was a delight. Crisp skin with a spicy/sweet sauce I could have had more than two pieces. The mac n cheese was a little dry but the flavor was good overall with it. The collards were really salty I was okay with them if I put some hot sauce on them. We had been talking about trying the food here for a long time. We were downtown on the weekend and decided to stop in. We got there right around 4:30 and it was busy. There was also a show going on at the PAC so I'm sure that contributed. We had to wait to be seated for about 20-25 minutes. Once seated, our server took our drink order and food order at the same time. Took awhile to get the drinks, but there was only one server in the place. He was taking orders, bussing and cleaning tables, running the register, and bringing out the food. Someone else did start helping run food and taking orders after we had been seated. The food came out pretty quickly after we ordered. It was all so good! My husband got ribs, catfish, and fried chicken. It also came with baked beans, hush puppies, and Mac n cheese. I ordered fried chicken with Mac n cheese and baked beans. My daughter had kids chicken which was two drumsticks and a side of Mac n cheese. And we ended up getting like three servings of the cornbread. All the food was hot and delicious. My husband had to bring the ribs home to eat later because everything else was so good. The prices were also super-reasonable which we appreciate right now. If you haven't been here, you need to go. It's worth the wait! read more

3.5 Stars. The Cozzy Corner has amazing character and wonderful staff that are truly passionate about what they do. My friend and I were visiting the area and we were both excited about trying this place after reading the reviews. We were both starving when we arrived, but unfortunately they were having trouble that night and we didn't see our food for an entire hour :( The staff were very nice and apologetic, but I wish we were offered some fries or something to snack as an hour is a really really long time to wait. The chicken was definitely worth the wait and we tried both the BBQ chicken and Fried Chicken. The sides were alright, nothing really stood out. I had coleslaw as one of my sides and it came in a really small container compared to the bowls you got if your order a side of Mac n cheese or mashed potatoes. So my recommendation is don't get the coleslaw. If I were to visit again I would definitely want to try the chicken and waffles. Good stuff! My first time at a "soul food" restaurant and what's most surprising is that it's in downtown Appleton, WI! Located on a side street just off of College Ave. so we drive by all the time and never knew it was here. Your first impression is the atmosphere. A combination of blues, soul, and reggae music is playing in the background; not too loud that you can't carry on a conversation but louder than in most restaurants. Records on the ceiling, brightly painted murals of Motown artists on the walls, and laminated tables with pictures of famous musicians. It's not a large place with booths on the exterior and a row of tables in the center. Once inside you cannot see out as painted murals on boards cover the windows up to eye level but still let the sunlight in. This keeps you in the right frame of mind (food and music) as there's nothing to view outside but the street anyways. Interesting menu; in how it was laid out and all the potential options without seeming to be overwhelming. There were individual dishes or entrees but much was a la cart (in a way). You could choose a certain number of meat options and then it came with your choice of 2 sides (many options here) and always cornbread. It really made it both fun and difficult to choose. I tried the bbq smoked chicken and catfish for my meat with sides of candied yams and macaroni and cheese. Don't stop if you're looking for a salad, lol. It wasn't busy and our food came relatively quickly. Huge portions that were prepared well and looked attractive. While not 5-star dining quality the food was good and between the four of us with all those options not one complaint. I was served two large catfish filets, 2 pieces of chicken, cornbread, and nice-sized portions of yams and mac and cheese. Only $14 and another meal of it that night. I'm not sure about tap beer but they did have a nice selection of bottled craft beer. Service was mixed. Very friendly and quick to serve when asked but our server only came around once after we received our food and we had to wait quite a while for our bill (which was served on a 7" record). A gentlemen in a wheelchair was quick to get me a beer when I was looking at the cooler. It's an older building that needs some work and I suppose that's part of the charm of the restaurant which feels authentic. The bathroom needed cleaning. We will definitely come back. Good food, good atmosphere, and inexpensive. Cleanliness and top-level service is was kept this place from being 5-stars. Maybe next time! read more

Most of the food is great. Seems they are short staffed and they make several mistakes with a few things because they are not able to pay attention to the details because they are too busy. The catfish, chicken and sausage was superb. Love the smoke on the sausage, the fish was flaky and very well balanced with the breading and the chicken was super crunchy and moist. The ribs and cornbread were above par. Ribs nice smoke, but the BBQ sauce was a little vinegar heavy for me. The cornbread stayed moist even after refrigeration and a quick zap in the microwave. Mac and cheese and Okra were pretty standard. We got very seedy Okra. The pulled poke was a bit dry and did not have as much smoke flavor as other things. The hush puppies I could have done without. This place looked like not passing up if your in the area so I stopped by. This place is super cool with an old school R&B theme. Old school R&B is playing with albums and album covers every where. Colorful R&B murals on the walls that mix singers together. This place has a great vibe and I really like how it this is an ultra cool dive restaurant. My service was great with no complaints and I was seated promptly with a menu and water. The menu has so many soul food options that it just boggles the mind and I wanted to try all of it but I ended up with the two meat and two side plate. I oped for the fried chicken and smoked ribs with mash potatoes and Mac n cheese. The chicken was cooked to order so they use smaller pieces to save time while cooking I think because they were small. I got a breast and thigh that was crispy, piping hot and juicy. The smoked ribs were smoked but not that southern smoke flavor and maybe oak wood was used and they were sauced by the way. They were meaty and moist but did not come clean off the bone. The mac n cheese was very cheesy, see my pictures. The noodles were over cooked and mushy but at least they didn't skimp on the cheese. The mash potatoes were smooth and flavored with something so they were not boring and tasty. Overall I really liked the place and it's a cool place to grab a meal. I've been wanting to go here for such a long time, and so glad I did! It certainly lives up to its name as it's located just off of College Ave, across the street from the Fox Cities PAC. It is a small restaurant with booths on two sides of the walls, then tables in the middle and along side a third wall. The decor is awesome with pictures of iconic musicians from the 50+ years. The music they played really fit the vibe. It was a lot of older R&B, funk, and pop music from the 50s and 60s. There's not a lot of southern food in our area, and we're lucky to have the Cozzy Corner because their food is amazing. With all of the choices, I was intrigued with the low carb plate, since I've been on a low carb diet for a while. It was a big plate of beans, pulled pork and a smoked sausage. The beans and pulled pork were phenomenal, but something was weird about the sausage. I don't think it was bad, just prepared and cooked differently from what I'm used to. Next time, I'm going to have a cheat day on my diet and get me some catfish, cornbread, and mac and cheese. :) read more

Wow. I went to Cozzy Corner a year ago and it was very good. We actually drove from Green Bay for a good meal. This time we went and the service was terrible. The waitress (Marcia) told us that they were out of cornbread and Mountain Dew. We ordered and the day goes on. Then the table behind us gets Mountain Dew from their waiter. We got the food and the chicken was good. The Mac and cheese was room temperature at best. The yams were good. The ribs were dry and I had to naw the meat off the bone. The waitress left us for over 30 min after we were done eating before we could get our bill and to clean up the plates. No refills, no substitution for the lack of cornbread, and terrible service. This a hidden gem in Appleton. Everything on the menu is awesome. The meat falls off the rib bones. The fried chicken is covered in crunchy goodness, locking in the juicy tender meat. You could sit and eat the catfish all day. We preferred the regular catfish with splashes of the hot sauce. The frog legs tasted great, they are big, juicy and meaty. The sides are also great. The red beans and rice was almost a meal on its own. Chucks of smoked sausage are mixed in for good measure. We all enjoyed the baked beans, very sweet and with a hint of smoky flavor. The hush puppies are solid and authentic. The collard greens taste like Grandma made them. My wife did not want to share her fried okra. From the two pieces she gave me I can tell you that it was really good. The sweet tea is exactly how we remember it from when we lived in North Carolina. They also offer a great bottled beer selection and soda. The service was great, the food was served very hot, and the portions are big. The atmosphere can't be beat, and matches the food. Waitress was very friendly in a Flo type of manner (personality with an edge.) She took and came back with my beverage order quickly. Ordered 2 meat plate with lemon pepper wings, gizzards, fried okra and collard greens. They were out of gizzards, so just stuck with the wings. That's fine, that may have been too much food. Food came out very quickly. Was offered refills on my soda several times. Everything was very good - the collard greens had an incredible "bite of heat".
