Allegedly "Shrimp Enchiladas"
Thomas S.

I'm going to be honest. I just didn't enjoy my meal. I had what was supposed to be the shrimp enchiladas, but it was really a cheese enchilada with a couple of shrimp on it. The rice and beans were the best part of my meal. I also had a jalapeño-Lime margarita because I was just curious and was hoping for some redemption for the lackluster meal. I didn't really find it. Think of Spicy, Lime Fabuloso with some tequila thrown in and garnished with a jalapeño pepper. I truly tried to find something I like. Perhaps I can say that I truly liked the chips and salsa served up at the table. But that's the best I can do. The Service was good but not great. I suppose this place serves some kind of niché in the market, but I'm just not part of it. Even the free ice cream didn't make me change my mind.

Came to Kilgore to visit my cousin and we ended up here for lunch! Super cute place; very colorfully decorated. They offered a ton of options. The waitress was super sweet and attentive; never left our drink go less than half full. Everything we ordered was tasty and the portions were quite large. Price point was great and everything came out fast! Definitely would come here again if in Kilgore again!

As usual, they left something off our to-go order. This happens all too often. I leave a tip every time and getting tired of leaving a tip for service and the order is incomplete. Someone needs to check the outgoing orders before handing them to the customer.

Vegetarian Quesadilla
Rossy A.

I've been to this Jalapeno Tree several times now, each time with coworkers. As soon as you sit, they bring out chips with some salsa and a creamy whitish-green dip, all of which are pretty good. Being vegetarian, the options at most Mexican places is limited to the basics: enchiladas, quesadillas or chile relleno (cheese only). Of all the different varieties of each of the options I've tried here, none of them have really ever left me walking away impressed. The food isn't bad, I've just certainly had better at other Mexican food places. My coworkers seem to enjoy what they get here, so that's good. Today, I finally tried the vegetarian quesadillas, which have squash, spinach and mushrooms. These come with a side of guac, sour cream and queso. These are probably the best dish I've had here, so I was pleasant surprised. I know we'll continue coming here, so I think this will be my go-to dish from now on. Nice perk: They give free soft serve ice cream!

Food is always good. Service is not consistent due to short staffing, but the staff they do have is always excellent. Love their swirls!

Subpar TexMex, poor service, and inept management. Not much else I can say about this place.

They just played Bon Jovi's "Bad Medicine" on Jalapeno Tree radio! Plus, the quesadillas are good and the wait staff is super nice.

The salsa was superb, some of the best ever. To make it perfect for my taste, I added a few drips of lemon juice and a little salt. It was so good that I purchased some extra to take with me. A significant disappointment was the stale chips, something that had been noted in other reviews. It's hard to imagine why a simple chip warming oven wouldn't be a quick purchase to remedy this. The tacos were okay, but the birilla one was inexplicably tough. I'm not sure how that happened, since the meat was shredded, but there it was. The beef enchiladas were delicious, as was the red sauce. The accompanying beans and rice were nothing to write home about. The star of the meal was a huge slice of tres leches cake. Oh, my word~~how could anything be this good? I would drive quite a few miles to have just this, and it was worth every penny of the eight-plus bucks on the ticket.

The chips were warm and yummy, the salsa wasn't as spicy as i hoped for. I ordered the carne asada fries with steak and nacho cheese for almost 13 dollars. The old bay seasoning on the fries were a surprising taste that I enjoyed very much. I'm not used to tasting fries with old bay seasoning but I grew up on the east coast where that is a norm. So it was a nice touch. The meat was tender and flavorful and the cheese was good. What I didn't like was the portion served. It's a small plate with very large fries taking up most of the plate and about 8 chopped pieces of meat. I would have figured the cost to portion ratio would have been much different. Most carne asada fries plates in Southern California are 13 dollars and take two people to finish. I finished this by myself and was still hungry. Especially being in Texas where things are less expensive and you get more bang for your buck, this was not the case. Overall. I give it a three star review.
