It's no secret, my husband and I love to eat. As the wife of a chef, we absolutely hunt for local restaurants, wherever we go, to celebrate local talent and local ingredients. A recommendation from a long time local (thank you Paul) led us to this magnificent gem in Bend. We sat on the patio, or garden oasis, if you will. Surrounded by an edible garden, which happens to be used in many dishes. Hannah was the perfect server with a smile. Great tips on wine and insights to the menu. Scallops? The answer is yes. Some of the best we've ever had. Ever! We ordered the Red Pepper and Poblano soup (a little spicy just like me)... scrapped the bowl clean. My husband got the beet salad... it was unique and the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. Let's talk dinner. The Morrell with Risotto, we know it's seasonal, so grab it while you can! Insanely good. The salmon was perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth delicious. I can't eat risotto, so they graciously added some beautiful garden candy, I mean carrots. Lemon Creme Brûlée - no words. My husband and I were in Bend, Oregon in September for our wedding anniversary. We wanted to dine somewhere special and I found this place on Yelp. I went ahead a made a reservation. They serve French American cuisine. Easy to find and there is a nearby parking garage so parking is a breeze. We walked in and this restaurant is decorated so beautifully. It had a very nice, relaxing vibe. Very dark, but cozy. Had it been a bit warmer, I would have much rather sat outside on their gorgeous patio. We were seated quickly inside and we perused the menu. I decided on the King Prawn and Shiitake Risotto while my husband selected the Jaeger Schnitzel. We both enjoyed a glass of wine with dinner and I also loved my Caesars salad as it tasted so fresh. I really enjoyed my dish. I always love mushrooms in my risotto and the King Prawns were so tasty. Unfortunately, my husband did not enjoy his dish as much and he is a huge fan of German food. Our dessert was tasty and they indicated that all desserts are made in house. Service was good but not outstanding. They seemed to be a bit short staffed. 3.5 STARS, TECHNICALLY, BUT THE HALF ISN'T AN OPTION. We dined here after my daughter and her (then fiancé) eloped. I had higher hopes. There were some things that we ordered that were really good, some that were mediocre, and some that were just meh. We were a party of 8, so there was a wide variety of tastes at the table - and I think for the most part everyone were pleased. I eat out A LOT, and I can safely say that I'm not sure I'd come back. The interior is well done, it's the right amount of dim and not super loud, which was nice. The service was good. I think I just had higher expectations when it came to the food. I ordered the schnitzel, which I ended up giving to my (new) son-in-law, because his wife (my daughter) stole his pasta (Truffle radiatory). She ordered the browned butter lobster risotto (they must have just waved the browned butter over the top of this gummy rice dish - and no way was the tiny bit of lobster fresh), which is what I ended up with (because I'm THAT mom) and - wow. let's just say I could have made this better at home. Others in the party had the filet mignon, the crispy skin chicken and the Mediterranean pasta - the chicken looked anything but crispy. We did not order dessert, because there was wedding cake to be had! The best I can say here is that it wasn't completely terrible.... but it also wasn't completely good. Took my wife for an evening out and thought I would give Jackelope another shot. Was greeted quickly and sat at a nice table. After reviewing the menu we decided on some sea scallops as an appetizer they were cooked to perfection and the sauce was delicious. The wife had wild mushroom pasta awhile I ordered the steak au poivre (tres major). Wife loved the pasta it was very rich and flavorful. The steak was tender cooked just right at medium rare and delicious. Looking forward to going back when the bone marrow appetizer is available. read more

Jackalope could be one of bends best restaurants but it just needs to be more consistent. we have been ther four times in the last two months and twice it was great and twice very disappointi... Tonight's visit we had a table of four. We ordered the 14$ bread board. There was enough bread for one slice each. We asked for more bread and were told there was only one portion of bread left and we could have it only if we ordered an entire 14$ bread board. Really ?.. Three out of the four entrees were great. But the halibut with polenta was a disaster. Not only was the halibut very dry but the polenta was dry, hard and under cooked. The waitress was ok but seemed a bit surly about the bread. When told about the inedible polenta she discounted the dish. I understand there will always a glitch or so but the I think the head chef needs to more involved with what goes out of the kitchen read more

I was told that Jackalope has gone through a transformation with a new chef, and I agree completely. I've eaten here before and it was, but it was outstanding on my last visit. White table cloth dining with New American cuisine of steaks, elk, bison, fresh seafood. The entrance was unique and seemed to take you into an adventure. Inside it was a dark, serene, nicely decorated dining room filled with diners. Dined in with a party of five. Hostess and waitress were nice and accommodating with requests. Ordered: Appetizers to share: * Roasted marrow bone w/Bacon and caramelized onion jam, garlic confit, and toasted crostini - very good! * Baked Brie w/local Honey, dates, apricots, dried cranberries, and toasted almonds & grilled crostini. Who doesn't like Brie! Salad: * Caesar salad - Romaine, parmesan, and garlic croutons, with a Lemon-Anchovy and Egg Dressing, topped w/shaved Parmesan Cheese. It was plain but I liked it. Entrees ordered in the group: * Vegetarian pasta - Brown butter sage pappardelle, with a miso truffle and white wine sauce, sweet peas, asparagus, and Shiitake mushroom topped with toasted walnuts and parmesan breadcrumbs. * Seared duck breast - with a balsamic and black cherry sauce, Arugula, creamy Goat cheese polenta, with a bacon and green bean sauté. * Pan-roasted elk - creamy mascarpone Polenta, crispy Pancetta Brussel sprouts, & sweet garlic. Topped with a Blackberry and Pomegranate Bordelaise sauce. Not my entree but tried a bite and it was really good. * Filet mignon - Pan-seared prime cut Filet Mignon, Topped with French Compound Butter, Malibu Carrots, and Yukon gold garlic & parmesan smash. * NY Bison - Local sourced Bison from Pine Mountain Ranch Bend, Oregon. Soaked in duck fat for four days, grilled and served with garlic cream parmesan potatoes, cipollini onions, sautéed asparagus, with a roasted shallot and thyme sauce. We all liked our entrees and thought all was flavorful and tasty. I can only speak specifically for my bison entree which was tender, flavorful w/nice accompaniments. One star off for a mistake in one of the entrees (they apologized and prepared the desired entree) and though the food was great we didn't realize until the end of dinner that most of our entrees were lukewarm (except the corrected entree). We were all having a good time! I've seen more than one review here about lukewarm entrees. If food can be this good then it would only be better if they can improve on this point. I would definitely return to try the other entrees like Halibut cheek, King salmon, or any of their pastas. My friend and I decided to try a different than usual Happy Hour last night. We hadn't been to Jackalope in about a year or so. I tend to forget about it as it's in an unassuming location, kind of out of the way in town. We got there right at 5 and had a table by the patio as it was too cold to have the patio open on a Tuesday night. I'd forgotten how cozy and unique of a place this is, the decor and ambiance I just love it. We ordered off the HH menu, I had a cabernet and she had an IPA. Then we shared the smoked scallops which were lightly smoked so not overpowering with a delicious sauce of corn, poblano coulis and a touch of red pepper, the scallops were large (4 of them), tender like melt in your mouth wonderfully tender and they came with 4 slices of toasted crostini, a nice addition. We also had the baked brie wrapped in pastry with a fig lightly flavored with garlic and honey that also came with crostini. Last but not least were the tempura green beans which I'd been craving since 900 Wall restaurant left us. They were just as good as the iconic 900 Wall and came with a creme fraiche made with lemon and garlic. We left full and happy. read more

Brought my gf here for her bday dinner. Made reservations ahead of time since last time we were in Bend, wait times seemed long. Restaurant has a Cozy and quaint ambiance. I love that they display local art for decoration and in support of the artists since they all seemed to be for sale. Our waitress greeted us quickly and presented us with the Oktoberfest recommendations, we started off with some margaritas for drinks and we weren't really pleased at all as they literally just tasted like lime juice. I didn't have it in me to complain Or return it so honestly just guzzled it down quickly lol. For appetizers we got the Dungeness crab stuffed mushroom Caps--- so delish! For our meals I got the filet mignon and my gf got the king salmon. Presentation was gorgeous. I was happy with my steak-- the brandy and peppercorn sauce was the perfect flavor. My gf said the salmon was good but The middle was raw and not cooked through well so that was another downer. Topped my meal off with a latte which was yummy! My gf ordered a tiramisu which according to her was kinda dry. When i made the reservation i did note we we're celebrating my gf's bday and it did kinda frustrate me that that wasn't acknowledged. Overall the price was decent for our dinner and what I got was good but I wasn't really wowed by our experience overall so I don't think this would be a restaurant I'd return to, at least as a top choice when visiting Bend again. read more

I'm only giving a third star for ambiance. They were pretty well staffed and not busy, 4 tables were sat, including my husband and I. The service was fine, a little lax but not bad. Unfortunately our entrees took forever, and when they did arrive the food was disappointing. My salmon was fishy and overcooked and served on an under seasoned bed of polenta. The flavors just didn't make sense with any of the dishes and left us hungry and unsatisfied. My take away is that there is an issue with the back of house. I may have missed my time to truly enjoy The Jackalope Grill. Hopefully the kitchen can get it together! read more

Took my mom here for her birthday dinner and they gave us a great outdoor table. The waitress was super friendly and the ambience was on point. They have a solid drink menu. Prices around 10 bucks for cocktails but also had non alcohol drinks like kombucha or soda, cappuccino. We got the calamari and mussels to start. Mussels were the star. Dip their bread in too (you won't regret it). Then for dinner we had lamb shank - this was the winner. Salmon dish- also good. And the pork dish. Polenta was eh but pork was tasty. Overall very flavorful menu and I would have tried it all if I wasn't full :) Dessert we did a chocolate dish not sure the name but it was so tasty and we all enjoyed it. My wife and I have been here several times and particularly enjoy the relatively quiet, restful venue. Unfortunately, our recent visit was a disappointment. Our server was cool and indifferent. The bread was tasteless, in a city of excellent bread sources, and the caesar salad a bust. LOVED our experience here! The garden is absolutely gorgeous, and the indoor area is coolly-decorated also. I didn't love the cocktail selection, but that is about my only complaint. Weak or unprofessional service, food preparation inconsistent and disappointing experience's compared to prior visits. Somebody is taking their "eye off the ball." At what point do we just stop returning? While it must be difficult to maintain the same high level of quality and consistency year-after-year, it's what I'm expecting every visit. It's not enjoyable to drop $100- $125 ( or $200 with two teens) and feel like it was an experience best described as "meh." So So Prior review: A consistently enjoyable meal in with good service and very good food, in a comfortable setting. The operative words here are consistent and very good. Duck is superb. Wine pour is generous. Outside dining is lovely considering your location. Overall, a predictable meal with very nicely prepared food. Negatives: Outside seating on card tables detracts a bit. What. A. Disappointment. This place didn't have any of the mains that were posted on Yelp, which is why we wanted to try this restaurant in the first place. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and we arrived 15 min early to our reservation and put some appetizers in and our apps came out , not only staggered, but after half an hour. Even the soup of the day took 15 min to come out. It's not like they were understaffed either. We waited for our main dishes for over an hour and by the time they were served, not only was the food terrible, but the server didn't even offer a discount or take anything off the bill for the food we didn't eat, because it was inedible, nor for the extremely inconvenient wait times. I also told the server when I arrived that it was my boyfriend's birthday, hoping they did something special for birthdays, and I'm pretty sure she forgot. The lamb shank that was supposedly braised for 5 hours, came out dry and over cooked. I don't know how that's possible when you braise something. The schnitzel looked like diner food and was inedible. The halibut cheeks with the risotto was bland and just drenched in butter. The mushroom caps stuffed with crab was also really oily and the stuffed crab tasted like canned crab (even the texture). The gnocchi was also bland and terrible. The only decent thing was the shrimp scampi appetizer, Caesar salad and the free bread and butter. The apple pie dessert that we ordered also looked like something a cat threw up. The server seemed like she wasn't all there either. There's no way the chef here knows how to prepare proper French cuisine; clearly. Overall, I'm extremely disappointed that this was the outcome of a special birthday outing. For the four of us, it needed up costing $400, with nothing taken off the bill. We took the leftovers home to feed our dogs at least so it wasn't a total waste. Save your money and try another place. read more
