I don't say this too often, but they got my filthy martini PERFECT!!!! I have been itching to visit Lamp & Shade again, but unfortunately just haven't got the chance. Yelpers mentioned The Tavern so we decided to give it a try. This is not the typical place we'd normally visit but I'm so glad we did! Brandon welcomed us in and brought us menus. We arrived around 5 PM on a Friday. It was clear that this is a local watering hole. From the pinball machines, to the dollar bills stapled to the walls, juke box, dart board, and the 'claw' machine it was a very fun experience. I ordered the BBQ Pork. It was excellent and the portion size was generous. I needed a to-go box for my leftovers! My husband ordered the Birria Burrito. Brandon was very helpful answering my husband's questions as he'd never had Birria before. It was a good choice for my husband. Throughout our meal, Brandon checked on us and refilled our drinks several times. He chatted with us as well and seemed to be working the entire restaurant on his own. Naturally, I celebrated by heading to Hideaway for breakfast. While I'm not a regular, I've been visiting Hideaway for years. The original location across the street had a classic smoke-filled dive bar atmosphere, and I could tell stories all day about memorable experiences there. Those stories are best saved for another time. The new location is unquestionably an upgrade in comfort and appearance, though it lacks some of the character and smoke that made the old place so memorable. Fortunately, the things that matter most remain intact. The beer is still ice cold, the drinks are solid, and the food is consistently above average at prices that are hard to argue with. This particular morning, I grabbed a seat at the bar and took advantage of their $5 breakfast burrito (available before 9 AM). The menu lists bacon or ham as protein options, but I was also offered sausage, which I happily chose along with the eggs and cheese. I'm glad I did. The sausage was nicely rendered with crisp edges that delivered little flavor bombs throughout the burrito. Wanting to dress things up a bit, I asked for pico de gallo. My server laughed and replied, "This is a dive bar," before offering salsa instead. Fair enough. The salsa, combined with a generous squeeze of their hot sauce, turned out to be exactly what the burrito needed. In fact, it was so good I briefly considered ordering a second one to go. Then I could practically hear my doctor whispering in my ear, advising restraint, so I reluctantly passed. For those unfamiliar with Hideaway, it's also a major Miami Dolphins fan destination. Whether you're a Dolphins fan or not, I highly recommend experiencing one of their game-day watch parties at least once. The atmosphere is electric and one of the more unique sports-viewing experiences around. My only minor gripe was being charged an extra dollar for the small container of salsa, and it wasn't even pico de gallo. Not enough to ruin an otherwise enjoyable visit, but enough to earn a raised eyebrow. Overall, a great breakfast, a little nostalgia, and a fitting way to celebrate a positive doctor's visit.

The fries are perfect (get the honey mustard!), and the salad would be something I would order time and time again, even off the special. My friend got the double smashburger and the smell of the caramelized onions compelled me to ask for a bite. I'm willing to stray from my fries and salad to enjoy this burger again next time. I'm still thinking about it days later... For dessert, I enjoyed the chocolate olive oil cake (a nod to the beloved olive oil cake at their sister restaurant next door). Where The Strand is an outstanding neighborhood restaurant which happens to also feature an interesting beverage program, dba is an outstanding little cocktail bar which happens to also feature an interesting bites menu. Both do everything they do really well. In terms of drinks, my go-to is the cigarette for breakfast- essentially their take on an old fashioned, but every drink I've ordered has been equally potent and balanced. The drinks have got nuance. I've also ordered a wet gin martini with blue cheese olives and that classic was done to perfection. But, if you aren't a drinker, don't fret- I went with a friend who is pregnant and they were able to concoct a fun mocktail for her as well. in terms of bites, you can't go wrong with the duck flatbread (I have been dreaming about it since!), the pan con tomate, or the cacio e pepe deviled eggs (same as on the menu next door). Next time I'm definitely trying the octopus salad! Finally, ambiance. This spot feels like you're sitting in a good friend's cozy living room. Assuming your good friend has impeccable taste and plenty of time for a curated thrift store haul. They've got records playing great tunes (you'll get some quick quiet moments as they change the vinyls throughout the night) and the lighting is dim. Again, it's unpretentious and is the kind of place you want to really settle into on a weekday night. Can't wait for my next visit!
