Although the food they had sitting out for show didn't look very appetizing, it was cold and late and they had indoor seating so we decided to give it a try. We got the fish wrap, shrimp and chips and two clam chowder bread bowls. Price came out to about $42 which wasn't bad for eating at the pier. The fried shrimp came in 6 pretty large pieces. Freshly fried, they were delicious! I actually wish we got more of them. The fries were good too. The clam chowder bread bowls were creamy and tasty. They had bacon in it so that probably made it taste even better. Good amount of clams. I do wish they cleared out the bread bowls more so we could have had more chowder. The fish wrap was just ok to me. Not that much fish in it but a ton of lettuce, tomato and a bit too much sauce. If they put more fish in it, it would be pretty bomb. The fish that was in it though was nice and crunchy. Lots of indoor seating as well as outdoor. Staff was friendly. Food is made pretty quickly. I think most places have things that they make better and things they don't. With this place, I'd definitely just stick with their clam chowder and shrimp and chips. read more

The only reason why you'd come here is because you don't want to wait in line, you are super hungry, and there's tables available. Don't expect great tasting food or good food quality. It's just a snack thats mildly priced and filling, NOT TASTY anyways wouldn't really want to go back here unless I was superrr hungry read more

I came here to buy my lunch during my break. I only came here because it was close to where I worked and there never seem to be a line. The food looks yummy but the pricing did not. The price was a tad bit expensive for a small plate of food. I ordered the fish and chip and only recieved a handful of fries with two fish sticks. I had discount but it was still expensive. I will have to find another cheaper place with better food. * Okay the only food that seem somewhat cheap with the discount I got is the clam chowder bread bowl and soda. read more

My co-worker and I had gone for a walk down the Embarcadero - it was a beautiful day out, sunny and warm by San Francisco standards. We ended up at Pier 39 and found ourselves in want of some food. In true form to its touristy locale, the food is lackluster and the prices a bit high. For $10, I came back with a paltry two pieces of fish, breaded too heavily and cooked too long. The fries didn't fare much better, and the tarter sauce tasted jarred. Do yourself a favor - walk down to the Ferry building and spend the $10 on better quality food. read more

Got fish & chips, the batter was a bit hard and the portion was quite small, mostly made up by the chips. The chips themselves were simply not up to par - frozen, dry, and served lukewarm. Quite expensive for the quality. No wonder it was the only store on the pier without a line read more

Typical pier food. Overpriced/poor value. Quality is not so great. Don't expect fresh seafood just because they're located by the pier. Fries sucked. Tasted like frozen fries from the supermarket. Fried fish tasted like cheap frozen fish. Clam chowder in sourdough bread: bread didn't seem fresh, and clam chowder was too thick and boring in flavor. I'd be happier spending $2 for canned clam chowder. Tourist trap. read more

if i could give it negative stars or 0 stars i would. We get there its super crowded so we assume that its popular and good. No just popular and im assuming its only because of the attraction of feeding nasty diseased pigeons that swamp at you for your food because the food couldnt have been the reason so many people were there. The price couldnt have been the reason so many people were there because you pay and arm and a leg for fish and chips alone. The customer service couldn't have been the reason because they were either busy rolling their eyes at you for a simple request of "please clean the bird crap off the table so we can sit" or they were too busy texting. Super rude!! So we were there 7/14 and we sit down on a filthy table. The birds are everywhere and there is literally no control or anything they do to try to detour this. These birds are clearly diseased as we saw one missing toes from the mites!! OMG! We FINALLY get our order which took forever btw, and it was so greasy you have to pile vinegar on your fish and chips just to eat it. It was tasteless and greasy!! The food was AWEFUL!!! I couldnt finish my food at all because i simply couldnt stomach it. I left feeling like i ate a brick. I didnt feel good at all. Seriously if you need an excuse to get out of going somewhere go here and eat because you WILL get food poisening. I witnessed a guy behind the counter touch his face then touch someones food!!! SHOULDNT HE WEAR GLOVES?! and not touch your face!!! read more

Had shrimp which was ok, nothing amazing. My complaint is that the inside tables are filthy and in the 40 minutes we spent at this place at no time did anyone come out to wipe the tables. Don't know what the outside is like. Our advice is to get food from here and go sit somewhere else. read more

Horrible service. It's like they make u feel bad for asking for things u pay for. I didn't even wanna ask for hot water for my baby. And they stare at u while u are eating! Food is noting special. I even asked for an extra spoon so I could share my husbands soup and they made me feel so uncomfortable. I will not be returning. And I suggest to anyone who comes to this area to try a different place. There are many places here to chooses from with way more friendly service ! read more

Ordered clam chowder on a sourdough bread. Meh.. Not so good or tasty clam chowder. For $8, i will say it's good if you don't have any other option but here. I think because lots of tourists, their service is really bad. read more

We stop here for their great clam chowder in a bread bowl. It has been one of the best clam chowder we have tried. I definitely recommend this place. read more

The fish to chip ratio was a little low. Really good food, ate there with the family, but for the price, three pieces would have been better. Garlic fries were also great! read more

Spicy Shrimp and Crab Chowder. AMAZING. I think it's tomato based because it's red, but I'm not sure. It tastes delicious and got a bit of a kick. Not very spicy, but enough to make it interesting. Yum! You can get it in a small cup, large cup, or bread bowl (~$6) Usually lines aren't too bad. There's not really an order to the line, you just go to anyone who looks free and then you pay at the two cash registers. GO GET THAT CHOWDA! read more

Stopped here twice on my trip. The staff is very friendly and the chowder is amazing. I enjoyed the carb and shrimp chowder on a chilly night. read more

The Hook - Crab and shrimp chowder - Seafood Near Me - San Francisco, California

More like a 3 minus....Food was decent ( I enjoyed my fish and chips, and the soup in bread bowl was great ), and my Goddaughter enjoyed her shrimp dish. However, my little sister's hot dog looked and tasted quite gross. Another con is her hot dog, soda, and fries were close to $13 by itself, and refills were extra. The food was overall decent, but for the price I paid for food for me and two kids totaling $50+ seems ridiculous.....for that price, I would hope they would put more care in all of their food....not just their fish. If its on the menu, it should be given the same amount of care as your specialties. read more

I don't often look up places before I eat there but today I did.. Most of the reviews are bad but I decided to try hook & cook anyways because most people are complaining about the stupidest things. I ordered fried shrimp, garlic fries and a Heineken. The beer was a little on the flat side but the food was really good. The fried shrimp was perfect nice and crispy The garlic fries were good but I've had better. With that being said when I do return to the pier I would definitely eat here again. read more

The portions are small and the food is lukewarm, not hot. Service is awful and run by young kids with no personality. Did I mention the food is not hot? Probably made a lot at first and left it to the heat lamps to keep lukewarm? Ordered fish and chips and as we all know it's not really good unless it's hot, fries still had brown peels on them, think it's laziness rather than style as they were also less than hot. $12 plus a $3 soda, worse I ever spent. McDonald's would've been better. 2 stars was so it didn't get pushed to the back unseen. I'd give it zero stars if possible. The adjoining Trish Mini Donuts with the same staff seems to be better, I mean how can one f...k up fried donuts and coffee? Lattes seem okay, haven't tried house coffee yet. read more

I'm wavering between a 3 and a 4, but the 4 it will be. Mostly because the customer service was really nice -- and it is surprisingly a bit difficult to find a clam strips dinner in the SF area. It was gourmet, but hit the spot, and the fries were really good too. Wish they had slightly more comfortable tables to sit on, but all in all -- a good spot. read more

The food is amazing so good totally suggest that you go here if you live in San Francisco or are taking a trip

Not bad for a place on the pier. Get the seafood combo/platter and upgrade to garlic fries. You have to pay extra for the garlic fries but they give you more than what comes in the combo. You get a full order of garlic fries. Which, by the way, were absolutely BOMB. Still a bit pricey for what you get, but I'd say this was the best value. I also tried the clam...and shrimp chowder, but I don't recommend this at all. Very little seafood in it, and it tasted like straight up melted butter! :( Pricey for what you got too. One thing I didn't like about this was how long it took me to get my food. People who ordered after me got their food before I did. read more

The clam chower was pretty good. Seafood combo was $$$ and had very actual seafood pieces in it. Def not worth the $10. Sit outside as the inside smells like a fryer and is pretty stuffy. Can't really expect too much in such a touristy spot. read more

Why does this place have so many bad reviews? I came here during the new years weekend, I was SUPER HUNGRY and we walked into this place. We split the 1/4 combo. 1/4 rack of ribs and 1/4 chicken. Comes with a dinner roll and it was about $12 total. Pretty pricey but we were hungry and getting tired of the same old clam chowder bowl (Even though the ones here were cheaper than usual!) The food was ok, it wasnt that bad. I thought it was good, but I was really hungry, So I guess everything at that time tasted good. Its pretty overpriced here but what eatery in Pier 39 is not? You cant even get a can of soda for less than $2 here. read more

We enjoyed our food here. We were looking for something a little less busy then the other chowder places and this place definitely did the job! They have a little indoor seating and outdoor seating area. Just beware of how packed the tables will be! The food is great and prices are average! For 2 adults and 3 kids our meal was about 50-60 bucks. read more

This is a fish'n'chips joint so I figured the fish'n'chips are a must get. I got them and I was not too impressed. It was made with cod and pretty standard, other than being surprisingly not oily. Despite being less oily, it was worse than my usual joint back in Westminster. The fries were oily and not too good. I didn't think it was excessively expensive ($8), the portion wasn't too large but just enough to fill me up. It wasn't too bad. Honestly, there was just nothing special enough about this place to warrant a better rating. But if you want fish and chips and something relatively cheap (compared to the other restaurants on Pier 39) then come here~ The GF ordered the Cajun Popcorn Shrimp and she adds: "It was really good! Just enough kick to be interesting to the tongue with a good portion size, price wise it wasn't too good though, so I think it probably deserves a 3.5 stars" read more

Meh, very mediocre fish and chips. That's about the best I can put it. I grabbed lunch here last week just because I was around checking on a field project nearby and wanted to grab a quick lunch. I would have explored for something nicer if I had more time. At least the staff seems pretty nice. Up front by the entrance is a spot where a young lady was stationed who would smile and ask if I wanted a beer. I'm not a daytime drinker and I was on the job, or else I might have been tempted because of her. :) read more

My shrimp & crab chowder was missing something. But my seafood combo was GOOD. The octopus was crispy and light fish perfectly cooked with yummy shrimp. Note if you order a pitcher of beer the is a $3 deposit. read more

I went here once and got their clam chowder in a bread bowl and the clam chowder was delish! So much better than Boudin's. There were lots of clam, not so much potatoes (which I like), it's more flavorful than Boudin's in my opinion. The bread wasn't that good though. The next time I come back I will get the clam chowder in a cup. read more

Compared to other places on the pier, this place is very cheap and its a good place if you want something quick and filling to hold you off until dinner time. The workers are consistent and very hospitable; it's understandable to be a little over the edge since it gets pretty busy and customers tend to act rude when their hungry. But other than that, the food (grilled chicken burger& hot link sausage) was really good! The coleslaw that is put inside the burger makes it really tastey and unique compared to other burgers. ITS A MUST TRY! read more

This was one of the one places my friends and I saw that served both a crab chowder and clam chowder. It took us a while. The crab chowder was a crab and shrimp chowder that was tomato-based, and it was really good. I still liked the original clam chowder, but it was definitely worth a try. I thought it was a little cheaper than some of the other places on the pier. Bottomline: Good stuff! My other friends ordered a salmon ciabatta (which was delightful) and a chicken ciabatta. They came with this house sauce, and that made the sandwich. read more

Everytime I am forced to go to Pier 39, I always come here and eat the deep fried clams. This place is extremely busy at times (service can lag). Seagulls are always around along with their poop. Not only that, seating can be limited due to how busy it is. But I will say this. I love deep fried clams and the clam chowder. read more

My bf and I were being super touristy and thought that this place looked more "authentic" than wipeout. There were 4 groups in front of us and the line moved quickly. We waited no more than 5 minutes for our food and it was good. We got the crab cake sandwich and the seafood combo. The crab cake was good and was on a soft, light roll. I wouldn't recommend getting the seafood combo because everything was fried and slightly greasy... Doesn't sit too well if you eat the whole thing. I sampled the clam chowder as well. If you like bacon, you'll like the chowder here. You can really taste the bacon. The only downside is that we sat by the door and watched as pigeons (not sure how they got inside) almost decapitate guests... :( read more

Love the fried clam strips. One of the rare places that sells this. Not too high of a price at $8 for this and fries. Drench with a lemon, then dip in the tartar sauce, and enjoy! read more

Hook & cook could serve better food. The people behind the counter are nice, they acknowledge you're present which I thought it was nice. We order the bread bowl with clam chowder and I have to say it was ok but I've had way better and cheaper before. The bread was super cold and chowder salty and watery. I think they should rosy the bread and make the chowder a bit richer, that would make them better then the rest of their competition. read more

I enjoyed their excellent fish wrap! The cole slaw was an excellent addition to the wrap. Very good sandwich and great service.

Giving 1 Star for many reasons. The food is definitely over priced for the quality that they serve. 10.99 for fish and chips and they don't even make their own tartar sauce. They give you those sad Heinz packets. The fish was soggy and lacked crunch. The manager (didn't have a name tag but she had a mustache) was really rude when I asked for a to go bag to put my box in. She told me that it was 25 cents for a to go bag which okay, I get San Francisco laws. But then she had the nerve to tell me that EVERYONE knows it's the law. I then said "you mean to tell me that people from out of town and out of state know about this law before coming"? And she said "yeah". Girl, please. There's a way to tell your customers about the law without being a smug asshole about it. Would NEVER EVER come back to this place. Management sucks at customer service. read more

I always eat here. I don't know why, because it's not that great. But I guess here are a few reasons: No lines. Food is made fast. Clam chowder! Don't have to deal with a sit-down restaurant. On another note: The garlic fries are disgusting. Sogggggy. Pretty pricey for the lack of quality in the food. There's pigeons that are flying IN the restaurant, which freaks me out sometimes.. ..but I admit I feed those pigeons. read more

We ate here because we wanted something pretty quick and relatively inexpensive on Pier 39. Tall order in the middle of the summer and in San Francisco :-) The service here was pretty quick which was a plus. The seating of course was sparse, but that is to be expected. The main reason they get stars taken off is because there was really very little that a vegetarian could eat. My daughter had to have french fries and mozzarella sticks. I eat fish, so of course that wasn't a problem :-) no, I don't have any suggestions on what they should serve for vegetarians. Fish and chips were pretty decent. The batter was light, and they were nice and hot, but the portion could've been a bit larger. One thing that gets five stars is the coleslaw. Usually coleslaw sauce is way too sweet and gooey. This was more like cabbage and cilantro tossed in a bit of vinegar, which was just delicious. The napkins were pretty small and we needed to take a whole lot of them for our greasy fingers :-) They had samples of all of the food items out so that you could see them when you were ordering. That was convenient. Overall, not a bad place for the family for a quick fried fish treat. read more

Grosss . Very over priced. Food is gross. The crab cakes were .... I don't even know. They don't make their own tarter sauce. Only good thing I can say is there was malt vinegar available so I could drench my food and get a little down, otherwise I threw it away. For it being in the pier I hoped it would at least taste somewhat decent. read more
