Came here for lunch. I ordered the grilled salmon hot sandwich, and a side of peppers and onions. Quantity was good, taste was very good, I really liked the dressing/sauce they put on the ciabatta roll. The peppers and onions had only had like two pieces of pepper and rest was onions, but it tasted good. I would come back to try more here. read more

Shrimp was made just like I like em. They were fried perfectly. The fries were hot fresh and ready to be served as well. The best restaurant in the pier. read more

Awful! Just awful seafood. I know for sure everything is frozen. Ordered chowder bread bowls and cashier handled the bread himself without gloves on after handling cash. No one was wearing gloves, even the cook! I'm giving one star because I couldn't give a zero plus their clam chowder was okay, but not great. read more

The Hook - Awful! - Seafood Near Me - San Francisco, California

Tasteless and oily ! I went at night, so I did not see any birds inside as the other yelpers have reported. I got the crab cake sandwich, fish wrap and sea food combo. The seafood is too oily and tasteless. It comes with fries and also a bland cabbage salad which is also used in the wraps and sandwiches. The sauce in the sandwiches and wraps is bland and creamy. No flavor at all. The same oily fried fish from the seafood combo goes into the wrap. Its not worth the price. One of the workers compressed the garbage in the bin near the entrance with bare hands and then handed food to people without washing hands. Good if you just want a (relatively) cheap bite and dont care how your food tastes. Even the McDonalds nearby is better than this. read more

I have the crab and shrimp chowder. It was good I didn't need to add salt but I like the taste. I'm not a big chowder person so I can't say oh this was awful our oldest was great but I will say I ate all the bread was soft and stopped up the juice perfectly. I'm not mad at it. But since I am not a chowder eater, I will probably not eat this again. It didn't do anything to win me over it was just good one what it was. read more

It is your run of the mill fish and chips, chowder in a bread bowl place. I had the crab and shrimp chowder, it was okay. My kids had shrimp and fries, another had the salmon, it was what one would expect. I only gave two stars because the back trash was overflowing and there were about 6 pigeons up on the trash can getting their meal. I realize it was a busy Saturday afternoon, but it seems that they should have someone emptying trash and wiping down tables. read more

This restaurant was amazing! The clams were superb! We absolutely loved the use of the paper straws, especially since the restaurant was located so close to the water. It was a great way to experience authentic California culture. One improvement that could be made is air conditioning. Oh man, it was warm in there. Likewise, the menu choices were limited, but being that it was a specific type of restaurant, that made since! Again, it was an overall pleasant experience! read more

Went here for the first and last time. To begin the place is dirty and staff argue about who will clean a table for customers. Secondly. The staff cleaned the tables with a visible smelly and dirty rag. Thirdly, the food is tasteless, no seasonung or herbs. I mean nothing, all the food (fried) taste the exact same. All the staff members are very young and have no customer service skills. Not to mention most staff can not understand you due to a language barrier, so they just rudely walk away without saying anything. This place will not get my business again. A 0 star rating is deserved but Yelp does not give you an option. I wouldn't even recommend this place to my worst enemy. read more

Okay place to eat while in the area. Burger was good but hot dog was only so-so. For the hot dog I feel that the hot dog stand I got one from yesterday was so much better then the one this restaurant had to offer. I did go eat in the middle of the day so it was decently busy and ended up having to wait a little while for food. Location on this place is great though! Down by the pier, so a perfect easy spot to walk while walking down there. Overall, if your in the area not a bad stop. read more

Just walking by and peeked in, unfortunately looked with hungry eyes... the shrimp and crab chowder looked so tempting that I forewent my usual Chowder House experience next door. Learned my lesson.... the line wasn't even long but it took FOREVER to get through it. Seems like the girl up front was getting orders together along with taking the orders which made for a very long wait. I was glad they jut had to pour my chowder in a bowl before I got too hangry bad time management. I will never forsake my Chowder place again..... the chowder I had was dissapointing. Pretty bland and my beer was $5! Learned my lesson, when someone suggests a new chowder place... dont "clam" up. Stick with what you know read more

I think there's something wrong with me... Everytime I visit Fisherman's Wharf I get this craving for fish and chips. So I'm walking around the pier looking for a place to grab a quick bite when I see "Hook & Cook." To be completely honest, the place looked pretty cool. A few picnic tables on the outside and some tables on the inside and this place was busy. So I assumed the food would be good or at least reasonably priced. Boy was I in for a disappointment. For $7 bucks, I got two pieces of fish and the stale french fries. My meal tasted like it had been sitting around for a few hours. I ate the fish, but I ended up giving most of my fries to the sea gulls. I think they're using them for nesting material. read more

The bread bowl was only about an inch deep with soup, salmon was overcooked, coleslaw was oily and not flavorful, but the service was somewhat quick. Everything was bland and nobody looks happy read more

wow i don't know why this place got such bad reviews?? they have the cheapest clam chowder in a bread bowl at pier 39 ($6.75) and it's pretty darn tasty. i ordered the regular clam chowder, my friend got the shrimp & crab chowder, and my other friend got the chicken soup. we all shared garlic fries. everyone was satisfied with their order. maybe the other stuff on the menu wasn't as good? but you can't go wrong with their clam chowder. after all, how bad can clam chowder be when you're at the pier?? read more

3.35 They let my dog inside or pretended they didn't see her. They had really good red chowder soup in a bread bowl and they were open earlier than any of the other touristy spots on the pier. Yay for Hook & Cook! read more

Food cooks real fast! That was the only plus at this eatery. No customer service at all. None what-so-ever. The food was drab and lacked any flavor at all. Fish was watered down so bad, that when I bit into it, water squirted out and hit my friend's faces. There were tons of pigeons flying around in the store as well. Eat somewhere else on the Pier. read more

Food: Chowder was really good. Creamy, chunky, and tasty. Fish & Chips are way overpriced for the two measly sized fish they give you. However the fish was crispy and still tender on the inside. Cleanness: Pretty nasty! There are so many pigeons that fly in and out of this place. They are pretty bold and tend to fly onto the tabletops. As they were flying out the place, they almost grazed the heads of the tourists! Price: About $20 for those two measly things. But it's pier 39, what do you expect? Taking that into consideration there are plenty of better places around the wharf! read more

I'm not sure why reviews are so low here, this is a classic FastSeaFood joint. It looks like most people are expecting something magical while ordering deep fried comfort food. This is not a restaurant, but a quick bite place. It looks like sometimes the team is running behind on orders during the rush hours, and the table area could have be kept in a cleaner state. On the positive side, plenty of sitting is available inside and outside, so feel free to enjoy your day by the ocean. I had shrimp&crab chowder in a bread, and it was as good as it can get. The soup texture was great, the taste a little spicy. Overall my husband and I had a positive experience. read more

I was hungry, and meandering around Pier 39 looking for something to eat. I figured I'd get something fishy. I was on the pier after all. The sign for this place intrigued me. I know I'm not supposed to 'judge a book by it's cover' but this 'cover' was neat, and I went in to eat. The outside tables were full, and the inside tables were also full. It's a pretty crowded place! I guess they're doing well. I walked over to the lengthy line, and stood for a moment, when a girl opened up another register and shouted 'I'll take whoever's next!" I looked, and the people in front of me appeared to be staying, so I switched lines to place my order. I looked up at the menu board, and decided upon Clam Chowder in a bread bowl, and an order of garlic fries. I went with the 'San Francisco' style as I'm from New England, and have experienced more than my fair share of 'New England' style clam chowder. I paid, and before the transaction was done, a bowl of soup was placed in front of me. I picked it up, and found some counter space to sit at. Before too long my garlic fries were ready, and I went up to get them. I returned to my counter spot, and after the yelp photo, I began to eat. The chowder was an orange-ish shade, but it was still delicious. Clams and shrimp were in this version of chowder. It was warm, and slowly seeping into the Sourdough bread bowl. After eating the soup, and bowl...I was actually quite full. But I did manage to stuff down about half the order of garlic fries. The garlic fries were just okay. The chowder was rightfully the main dish. I may or may not be back? There's alot of stuff on Pier 39 to see and eat at. This one was good, but lots of other places caught my eye (and stomach) to see next time. read more

Wanted to try a new fish and chips place besides the place I usually go to (Pier Market Seafood). Got the seafood combination, the food was average, not very good actually compared to other fish and chip places. When I took the first bite of fish.. I was a litle surprised at how fishy it tasted, I asked the waitress if they used catfish and she hesitantly insisted it was a "type" of Cod.. fishy fishy.. Outside tables were relatively clean, birds freaking EVERYWHERE.. which the staff is so used to they carry around spray bottles to hose them down, even INSIDE the restaurant.. shooting whatever is in their bottles all over the counters and eating surfaces.. gross There was a group of 4 japanese girls trying to eat INSIDE, but were being terrorized by a flock of 15 pigeons literally tearing apart food left by a guest who didn't throw their stuff away.. TLDR, meh fish and chips, crazy birds, touristy.. will default back to Pier Market just a couple doors down next time I'm in town.. read more

Slow service, employees are more concerned with answering the phone than serving customers. Food is very expensive and nothing you could not get in a gas station. You would have less stomach trouble eating some roadkill than after eating the food offered at this "restaurant." This is the typical tourist trap, in general stay away from the pier This place is not fast and they don't even offer edible food. Get roadkill instead. read more

Very pricey for fish and chips. The fish smelled and tasted super fishy. It made the food inedible because I feared I would get food poisoning. My friend and I did not want to deal with a sit down dinner with wait staff and the whole ordeal, so we opted for Hook and Cook. We were better off going somewhere else. I wish I would have checked the reviews first. Not only was the fish bad, they give the gross tartar sauce packets, the place is filthy, and an employee took all the condiment towers from the tables, including ours. He actually asked me to give him the ketchup and Tabasco while we were still eating our fries. Bad service, bad quality, dirty location, and overpriced. Stay away from Hook and Cook! read more

Overpriced for what you get. Customer service is non-existent. I felt like we were more a pain in the rear than customers. Skimpy.... Terrible service you stand around while random employees look at you or scream orders from behind the counter. Finally someone will direct you to a cash register to order. Doesn't seem to be a ryme or reason to the "system". You then scramble for a filthy table or counter that doesn't appear to have been cleaned that day. I got a combo basket bland limp fries, 2 small deep fried fish filets, 2 deep fried shrimp and a tiny amount of calamari. Everything was low end frozen stuff. I got my son a hot dog that took forever to finally be ready. It was a decent grilled dog on a huge non toasted or grilled soft french roll. Also there are pigeons flying around inside. Tourist trap definitely never repeat. read more

Regrets, regrets. I am ashamed of myself for living in SF and going here. It made me seem like I am a tourist in my own city! Why, oh why didn't I bust out my $70 a month smartphone and YELP it before I head into this place?! And once I got in I should have went straight out. The two reasons are: #1.) Pigeons were EVERYWHERE! ON TOP OF THE TABLE AND under your feet!!! Jeesus! and #2.) It's a fish and chip/clam chowder joint owned and operated by Asians! It's like going to a PHO place operated by African Americans and Sushi place operated by White. In general, that's not a good sign. In general, but not in 100% of the cases. $17 for a very small portion of fish and chip and one clam chowder bread bowl. The lady that made my bread bowl had no gloves on and handled the bread after operating the cash register. The fish and chip only came with 3 small pieces of friend fish fillet and a small order of fries that were soggy. And get this; it took them 15 mins to get a premade meal out. All they had to do is put it in their 1000 degree fryer and pour the premade PROGRESSO clam chowder in the breadbowl! There was only 2 orders in front of us. Dam I regret coming here. I have no one to blame but myself. Why did I not go to the other 99 GREAT seafood restaurant at the PIER!!!!???? Stay away. Don't be tricked in here because alot of clueless tourist is sitting outside and it make this place seem decent. It's not! Don't be hook into this place, not even considered a restaurant, I will call it a place. Because once you are hooked, you are cooked!!!! So unless you want you want to dine with pigeons and eat premade fake clam chowder at a fake seafood restaurant, be my guest. Don't say YELP didnt tell you. read more

This place is slow and inconsistent. The chicken fingers basket is way too expensive ($8 for two pieces and a small amount of soggy fries). Fish & chips has equally soggy fries and okay tasting fish. Walkin around the wharf one day and we got a bit hungry. Since we've never tried this joint we decided to give it a go. This place looks like its being run by students but not in a bad way. They move fast and know their orders. Its amazing actually. Food wise, well its average. This is what we had... - Clam Chowder bowl - Garlic Fries - Fish and chips The chowder bowl was nice and hearty, its nice for the cold wind at the pier. The Garlic fries were EH, loads of garlic but got soggy pretty fast. Thats too bad. Fish and chips, they were good. I enjoyed it. Nothing special, it just looks and tastes like fried white fish.
