Came here with my sister and her friend for lunch during a trip to San Francisco and decided to get their Fried Rockfish sandwich. The seating inside was a bit limited and taken up by other people, but there was an ample amount of seating around the SF Ferry Building (including outside) that we were able to seat ourselves at instead. I have to admit that my standards weren't high for this sandwich, but it genuinely tasted amazing. I have to say that it was probably one of the best sandwiches that I've ever had the opportunity to eat in all of California, and I'm unsure if I'll ever be able to encounter a sandwich that tops it. My partner got the fish & chips which came out piping hot & crispy. Perhaps not quite as excellent as Hook Fish, but way easier to get to and better seating options, which more than makes up for it. Wow! Nopa Fish in the SF Ferry Building deserves its high marks. We came here for an early lunch and loved our sandwiches. Simple, yet exquisitely prepared and delicious. I had The Rocky, a very large piece of fried, crunchy-battered rockfish on a bed of a delicious cucumber/ carrot/ ginger cabbage slaw served on Acme Milk Bread. Enough for two meals - if we weren't staying at a hotel. My wife had the open-faced Bay Shrimp & Egg Salad Sandwich, so beautiful that people walking by kept asking what she had. I've been wanting to check out Nopa Fish for a while and finally got a chance to over the weekend. We came around 1 pm on a Sunday and it was pretty crowded but we were able to grab some seats. The kitchen is pretty efficient, we got all our food in about 10 minutes and the staff is attentive in clearing plates from prior customers/wiping down tables which was appreciated. At the counter it was definitely hard to hear the cashier over the surrounding noise which made placing the order a little tricky, but nothing too crazy. We got the Asparagus Louie salad, fish and chips and the rocky sandwich. Asparagus Louie salad--definitely not worth it. Just a bunch of iceberg lettuce drenched in dressing and a few sticks of asparagus. The dressing was tasty, but definitely way too much to the point where it felt like we were eating globs of it rather than an actual salad. For that price, not worth it at all in my opinion. Fish and chips--decent. Fish was very delicate but also very oily and slightly on the darker side of fry. Fries were awesome, and the pickled veggies were a nice touch but the aioli tasted like nothing. Rocky Fish sandwich-- the highlight for me. I personally LOVE fresh herbs and this felt like a cool twist on a fish banh mi. Tons of fresh mint and slaw to brighten up the fish. Overall, I'd get the fish sandwich again but it is pretty expensive for what you get. I understand the real estate is prime and can appreciate costs needed to survive in the Ferry Building, but do think some items were more worth it than others. read more

Bay Shrimp & Egg Salad Sandwich: They did not hold back on the protein. The shrimp and egg salad was generously piled on, but the real standout for me was the milk bread. Perfectly soft, slightly sweet, and it brought the whole thing together beautifully. One bite and I was completely hooked! That's not an exaggeration. Fish & Chips: Wow. The fish is beer-battered and fried to a perfect crisp, and you get three generous fillets. The fries hit that ideal balance of crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, which is honestly harder to pull off than it sounds. Nailed it. Since the weather was cool and a bit chilly, we were in the Ferry Building searching for a restaurant that serves clam chowder soup. We stopped at Hog Island. The line was out the door. We continued searching and came upon Nopa Fish. They were not busy and it was the perfect place for a bowl of clam chowder soup and bread. Ahh...warm comfort food on a cool day. Service was quick and the employees were attentive to us and other diners. I left my blue bag. One of the employees followed us out of the restaurant and handed me the bag. I was grateful that he went above and beyond the call of his duty. The minor drawback is my male companion does not like mushrooms which is in the chowder. He picks out all the mushrooms and gives them to me. I love mushrooms. They are nutritious and beneficial for my health. Return visit? Yes, future visit is a must. i really wanted to love nopa fish - the branding, whole ambiance, and plating of all the dishes was so perfect! however, i think most things my group ordered were just not worth it. i personally got the egg salad toast with shrimp. it was much larger than i expected which was great, but also very dense and i felt heavy after eating it. there also wasn't that much shrimp inside. the fries (unpictured) were fine, not too much oil and quite crispy. the fish chowder had promise but could be more flavorful in my opinion. and, the prices are just a bit above what i'd expect to pay, so i hoped the food would be a bit better. note that there are limited areas to sit if you're dining at the ferry building and also there are flies around the area. during a typical lunch rush there will be people waiting to sit. read more

I really enjoyed the rockfish sandwich, the rockfish was nicely fried and tasted fresh, the vegetables and sauces mixed well together to create a balanced and savory taste, and the bun was fluffy and nicely toasted. The house smoked trout latke was above average, the bread at the bottom was a bit overcooked but the trout was fresh and the beet hummus was a nice addition in flavor. It is $8 though which is quite expensive; I'd probably skip on it next time and just get the sandwich which I think is reasonably priced at $21. Not a whole lot of seating since Nopa Fish is located in the main thoroughfare, but most people aren't lingering around for too long, so seats open up fairly quickly. For Ferry Building bites, there's quite a few great options to choose from. I decided to give my usual haunts a pass to try Nopa Fish. Located within the Ferry Building, it's a small restaurant with limited seating (two long communal style tables) and maybe works as a better setup for grab and go. I was in luck, and snagged a pair of seats at a table with my friend. Staff were great, with suggesting adding the fries and chips to our orders. Order at the counter, and you get table tent numbers for your table. A tad pricey, but everything is around the Ferry Building so it's well expected. I got The Rocky along with the seaweed chips. The Rocky was great. Lots of flavor packed into the sandwich, with the buns similar to what I would love in a burger bun and they work well here too. Fish had a nice crunchy fried shell and flaky steaming interior. Perfect. The seaweed chips were just alright, like homemade chips with some seaweed powder sprinkled on them. My friend's Bay Shrimp and Egg Salad Sandwich was lackluster on the shrimp (very small amount of shrimp included) and just overpowered by the egg/creaminess of mayonnaise. He did praise the bread though, with it being similar to a milk bread with nice exterior crust and fluffy interior. The fries were pretty good. Overall, mixed on the food. I felt the fish and the fries were the real hits, and would go back just to try their fish and chips. My friend and I both resorted to disassembling our sandwiches with forks and knives. I don't think they would work well if someone intended to grab them as a to-go sandwich and tried to eat them without utensils. I came for the tuna sandwich which a colleague had proclaimed the best thing he'd ever eaten, but was shanghai'd by the counter sign offering "market catch: chanterelles, leeks, potatoes, broccolini & almond romescu". Oh, and it also contains a nice slab of ling cod they didn't bother to mention, Tastes and ingredient quality couldn't be better. Romescu is a red bell pepper sauce that became magical with the addition of coarsely ground almonds. Can't wait to try it at home. I also ordered the pickle plate and was surprised to receive a generous tub with a mix of pickled red onions, cauliflower, leek and pepperoncini with some corn kernels thrown in for fun. We decided to check out Nopa Fish at the Ferry Building, which is a popular joint with limited seating in front of the restaurant. The menu has a nice variety of small bites, sandwiches and other items to choose from. Although we came during a weekday at noon, we were able to order right away and didn't wait long for our food to arrive. I ordered the Bay Shrimp and Egg Salad Sandwich. The sandwich had an open-face construction with the shrimp and egg salad scooped on top. The two slices of dill pickles are served on the side. The bread is thick and has a soft, buttery texture. It is difficult to eat the sandwich normally so I did have to cut it with a fork and knife. When tasting the egg salad mixture, I found myself wanting more of the shrimp - the shrimp itself is tiny and gets overpowered by the egg. The mayonnaise stands out as the flavor note and I wasn't able to distinguish any other flavors. To bring it to the next level, I do wish that there was more of a balance of seasonings to really make it stand out as a great sandwich. I was at the Ferry Building once again to check out a craft fair. But I needed to eat something first, and decided to get lunch Nopa Fish before the lines got too long. I had to get the fish and chips, and they were delicious! The breading on the fish was thin and crispy, while the rockfish was super flaky. And the fries were tossed with cumin, which added more savory flavors. I really enjoyed the harissa aioli and their house hot sauce, which was a nice change from the traditional tartar sauce. They had an earthy, peppery finish. A perfect pairing with fried fish. The pickled veggies packed a punch! I think I saw mustard seeds sprinkled on them. But whatever they pickled them in, it added an additional pop of acidity. Malt vinegar was not missed. What I also liked about the fish and chips is that they weren't greasy at all. It felt light overall, especially with the picked veggies. And the portion size was just right to satisfy my hunger. Nopa Fish is also a seafood market, with a few selections to buy by the pound. Service was really friendly! The tables available within their shop are communal tables, with one round table for 4 off to the side next to Lunette. Food comes out pretty quickly, so I imagine turnaround is quick, too. They're definitely a nice addition to the Ferry Building. I will be going back to try their raw fish with sushi rice. read more

This place brings me back to Granville Island and the first time we ever had fish chowder. I thought I'd never have that again, but here we are with version that's even better. The mussel came with a decent portion size, and the meat was well cleaned and tasty. I wish the broth was a little more garlic, as it was just a tomato base. Still yummy though. Just my own personal preference. The garlic bread they served this with was insanely good. It tasted like it was soaked in butter in the best possible way. Definitely clogged my arteries a little, but was well worth it. I wish that the mussels came with french fries, but I also wouldn't have wanted to miss out on the bread, so I will allow the substitution. The french fries were very good. This newish counter service fish market and restaurant recently opened and I've been meaning to try the food after visiting the original Nopa location. I wasn't feeling super hungry so I ordered the most exciting thing I saw on the menu - the smoked trout latkes. These turned out to be perfect! The crispy potato pancakes with a nice crusty exterior topped with pickled beet hummus and the smoked trout made for the perfect bite. The hummus gives the pancakes a tanginess that is balanced out with the creamy horseradish creme fraiche that's served on the side. I would absolutely come back just for the latkes but now I really want to try the other dishes on the menu as well! There are a couple of long tables but it does get crowded so it might be better to get your food to-go and eat outside at the public tables. read more

Nicely fried fish sandwich with good acid balance from the slaw and veggies. House smoked trout latke, 8 each McFarland springs trout, pickled beet hummus, and horseradish creme fraiche 4/5. Nice crispy latke with smoked trout. Conserva and pan con tomate, 11 Mussels and early girl tomato crostini 3/5. Interesting combination with the early girl tomatoes (great seasonal add) and mussels, but liked the other dishes more. Fish and chips, 25 Wild local rockfish, harissa aioli, pickled vegetables, and cumin-spiced kennebec fries 3/5. Thought it was just average for fish and chips. Fries could have been crispier. Service was great. They recommended the smoked albacore melt for our next visit. read more
