I went here today for the first time. Nice spot but the food wasn't great. The cabbage had a weird taste to it. Cabbage is my favorite and I tossed it. The greens were bland with no flavor at all. I wouldn't go for the food jut the atmosphere. My husbands chicken had no taste but fried hard how he likes it. I didn't taste the mac and cheese yet. That's my husbands favorite. The catfish Platter had two HUGE boneless filets. tasted really clean, none of the dirty swamp flavor i'm used to. The food was really good and you get ALOT. The fries are freshy hand cut and the mac and cheese is pretty good. Try the fried chicken!!! The half chicken is enough to eat there and bring home for two. The pineapple orange creme cake was so moist it was ridiculous :) I would definately reccommend this place to anyone. :) As a few other reviewers have said, this is not the place to go to get a quick bite, but if you have some time and an appetite then the Hitching Post should be on the list. read more

You get a lot of decent soul food for a good price. When I say a lot, I ordered half a chicken and I got give huge pieces that look like they could have created one whole chicken. The food was good not great, the chicken needed salt but it was good, the sides were good also, the mac n cheese was cheesy the greens were tasty. Can I say how much I love this place. My fiancé stumbled upon them one night and we've been hooked ever since. I love there thick steak fries and the fried chicken is always seasoned perfectly. They make great drinks and its such a cosy atmosphere. I had the crab cake last Saturday snd was pleasantly surprised at how little filler there is and it has great flavor. BEST TROUT SANDWICH EVER! The portions were huge and the food was good, you pretty much can't go wrong there. The trout was fresh and crispy and the owners, who have been there since the late sixties, fry it up for you behind the counter. One of the best home cooking spots in the area. The Hitching Post is a old school ma and pop spot, complete with read leather booths. The food is great and the portions are extremely large. One meal can easily feed two, with leftovers. My favorites are the wing dinner and the fried fish, with mac and cheese. The fresh spinach is prepared to perfection every time. The old thing that prevents a five star rating is that it is possible to wait ages when the place has multiple customers. They cook orders one table at a time, so if they have a few tables, prepare to wait. read more

The Hitching Post October 22, 2011 While visiting DC, my husband's great aunt invited us to dinner our last night there and a friend of hers recommended a restaurant in North West called ?The Hitching Post. - a soul food restaurant with the best pork chops in town. We entered The HP and a friendly voice from behind the counter directed us to a booth . The first thing you notice is that the place is dimly lit and looked as if it had not undergone any serious interior overhaul since it opened in 1967 sans the two flat screen TVs suspended from either side of the room dominating the small space. Still it had a personality of it's own and what it lacked in decor it made up for it by possessing an air of comfortable familiarity. Once settled in our booth I took notice of the patrons sitting at the bar/counter. They were older gentleman who appeared to know one another and be regulars at The HP. After we had been given our menus, I recognized the man and woman smiling from the front cover of the menu as none other than the dozing man we had just passed sitting at the front entrance and the woman was none other than the woman who was now doing the cooking and ringing up the orders on the cash register. I had to chuckle at the menus. When the need arose for price increases, someone just took a black Sharpie and wrote in the new prices! Someone else may have considered this as tacky, but I thought it had 'shabby chicness' and it seemed to fit right in with the place and the patrons! After several minutes our server finally came to take our orders. Since we had waited some time for her to wait on us, we all knew exactly what we wanted when she got there! We placed our orders and what happened after that was a restaurant first for me! We were served our meals in different stages, but even before that happened, I was appalled to see the server carrying our glasses with her fingers inside of them. I said something to my husband and I think he whispered something to me about praying that her hands were clean! After she served our drinks she disappeared right before our eyes, I mean she was literally standing no more than a few feet from us, but she didn't visit our table again for almost another thirty mins and when she did return it was to bring the corn on the Cob that Aunt Snook had ordered. After several more minutes she brought Snook's pork chops and after another several minutes she brought Snook's baked potato. Which I thought was mine! And at this point I so hungry that I was willing to argue about it! Somewhere during that time my husband did get his mac n cheese. By now about 50 mins had passed and I had long since munched down on one of Snooks 3 pcs of corn. My husband, who had been trying to save his Mac n cheese to eat with the rest of his meal had eaten about two thirds of it. My spinach arrived and then my porterhouse and finally my baked potato. Somewhere in there my husband got his collard greens, but he still had not gotten the coveted pork chops. He whispered a joke to me about maybe they only had one frying pan! The server at some point let him know that she had not forgotten about him. Finally his pork chops arrived and to our surprise another pork chop for Snook since she only been served two when she should have gotten three! The food was decent. The prices were reasonable and the portions were very good! In a time when everyone is scrambling to give customers more healthy choices, The HP is keeping it real. Everything is deep fried and the veggies are served with a slab of butter on the side. The HP is not for chumps! read more

before dining at hitching post, one should be aware of the following things: 1) hitching post math: your normal 1:1 ratio flies out the door as soon as you enter and is replaced by a 1:4 ratio, ie. 1/2 chicken dinner = 2 whole fried chickens, and 1 order of any side results in a portion equivalent to at least 4 side dishes in any other restaurant, even if that restaurant is in the deep south 2) hitching post exists in an alternate reality where a) time slows down to the pace of a wonderful ol' mom and pop reality where the minutes are measured not by a clock , but by the steady and hypnotic hiss of things bubbling in a fryer, and b) chickens and potatoes and pretty much every thing known to be a food item are frickin HUGE 3) your touted pride for gluttony is most likely to crippled, trampled, and left crying for mercy at the side of heaping plates of leftovers unless you bring along 5 starving collegy-type/really-stoned friends, your entire extended family, or that japanese hot-dog eating champion guy to help you finish your order, ESPECIALLY if it's chicken 4) food comes out piping out and will lead to multiple exclamations/variations on the word "hot" creating a pseudo-language of the burnt tongue once you've got this down, you should be approximately ready to face the merciless onslaught of fried and baked things arriving at your table. being uninitiated my fellow booth-seated yelpers (mike, karman, kevin, alicia, pc, katie, and the bystanding tables, I hope you survived without serious abdominal trauma after i left for the tea) and i stared with full stomachs and hallucinating-like eyes as our four 1/2 chicken orders and accompanying sides (at $12 bucks a pop) turned into first a parade, and then a pile, of chicken, mac 'n cheese, spinach, fries, coffee, sweet tea, and collared greens so ceaseless that mr. time himself began to fret and macy's began to shake with worry about how to trump this extravaganza before next thanksgiving rolls around and would there be time enough for such imaginings... and you know what? ALL of it was GOOD ( i mean sitting on the back porch in a rocking chair while patting your swollen belly and picking away with a toothpick exclaiming "DAMN that was GOOD" good) this place is awesome. i say get there. and make sure you take your sweet damn time along with you, cause there isn't any other way it's gonna happen. word. personally, i can't wait to go back and try a few of the other things on the menu. i just gotta make sure i bring backup read more

Great soul food, and the crispy spinach salad (one of several non-soul food options on the menu) was delicious! Portion sizes are very generous, and the jukebox selections are classic. But the best part was our waitress Arlene, who was super friendly and attentive -- honestly, I'm looking forward to seeing her again next time we go back. My only complaint/observation is that they should add candied yams to the menu. Really, what kind of soul food restaurant doesn't have candied yams?! A good, solid meal. Going on a Friday eve was the right thing to do, since we'll have tasty leftovers all weekend. To make sure we are not wasting food, next time we'll order one fried chix platter to share. We did not get pie, but I noticed it was store-boughten. My husband said he had not been fed that well since his Grandmother was alive (in Arkansas). I don't fall on either side of the "greatest show on earth" vs. "world's greatest food is wasted on me" debate. I (a Yank) liked the food; it was really good. And there was a lot of it. And the people were friendly. A great value for money. Nothing to complain about, but you may not say it's the best you've ever tasted, either. After reading the reviews on Yelp, I suggested this place to my dad for dinner. Both of us were excited about the fried chicken and when we walked in, it smelled wonderful. We ordered promptly, and an hour later, we still had no food. The waitress never came to check on us, and the staff generally seemed to be barely working. Mostly, they were just standing around or talking about whatever was on TV. Starving, we decided to leave. No one offered even an insincere apology. Back in DC and A little disappointed - waitress said there was no dark meat, just white meat or wings. We ordered the wings and blacken catfish. Wings were crispy but needed more seasoning. Blacken catfish was excellent though, fries that came with it were dry. Other sides (collard greens, potato salad and coleslaw) were ok. Staff were friendly.
