A party of 15 of us celebrated our Aunt's birthday on Sunday evening. The onky 2 wait staff servicing the bar, our party and the rest of restaurant patrons tried to do their best but fell short. For some in our party it took over 30-40 minutes to get their order. One person in our party ordered a turkey sandwich and was told a FULL HOUR later that the chef discovered the kitchen was out of turkey!! She then had to wait 17 minutes for fried chicken wings. Two other people got their entree but weren't served their 2 sides until after they had eaten all of their wings. Lastly, because there were 5 separate checks EACH check came with a 20% gratitude because of our party size. OUTRAGEOUS! Had there been only one check we would have been charged 20% only once. Food was pretty good but clearly they had insufficient wait staf and kitchen staff to manage all the orders. The restaurant had a lot of takeout orders that we saw people coming to pick up. Food is always fresh. This place has been feeding me since 1990. The new owners are doing as great of job as the previous owners.

At first the menu can seem pricey (a lot of things in the menu are under $10, but most of them are between $10 and $15), but wait for the food and you'll see that it's totally worth it! The portions are huge and I am one of those people that reads "the portions are huge" and says to himself "yeah, whatever" and end up realizing that the portions are normal (I eat a lot), but this time I really had to change my mind. The portions are really HUGE. Check the pictures, read the other reviews. Also, the service is slow, but it's just because it takes a lot of time to cook that food from scratch and it's totally worth it. I was there with a group of 9, almost all of us took their leftovers home. Overall, it was a really amazing experience! If you've got an appetite for soul food, The Hitching Post is the spot! It's a little out-of-the way, near the Old Soldiers Home. But the food is so wonderful! Anything fried is just right--chicken, fish, or pork chops: it's not greasy, the coating is not thick, and it's crisp and juicy. I'm sorry but I have to be honest. I did not really enjoy the food. Although they give you a large amount, they charge a lot. I would rather receive less food for less money (especially since I didn't like the food). I haven't been here in several years because it's so far from me, and only from the Yelp reviews discovered that they had been bought out by someone else, which concerned me. However, my concerns have been laid to rest! The food is just as amazing as I remembered it! The fried chicken, cabbage, shrimp, mac and cheese, catfish expertly fried, and even potato salad were all delicious! My server was named Arlene aka Smiley aka Chubby, who coincidentally only lives a few doors down from the place, was awesome! Very sweet, attentive, and fun to talk with. I was caught off guard when I looked at the prices on the menu when I came in, but I stuck around and was glad I did. You'll wait around 30 minutes for your food. Don't wonder--you'd wait that long at any restaurant that cooks food, you just don't normally notice because of the bustle. The portions are generous. For people who are wondering what the sandwich is--take a trip South sometime. You take a slice of bread, butter it, and wrap it around the piece of meat you're eating. That's how pappy did it, so it's good enough for me. I spoke with the owners tonight and they confirmed that they're selling. Sorry Hitching Post lovers -- and I was one of them when I lived in Petworth -- but my experience on a recent visit back was really disappointing. Why? -- Ordered a simple meal at 9:30pm. Came out of the kitchen at 10:15 -- After a 45-minute wait, the order was wrong. I asked for blackened catfish. I got fried catfish that was more breading than fish. Lady at counter admitted she put the order in wrong ... but didnt offer to reduce the price of my "meal" (which after 2 bites I couldn't eat -- it was more breading than fish) -- Don't order the cabbage. Trust me on this. -- I ordered a beer. Had to change tap. Ok, fine. That happens. But when I ordered a second one, I got a different beer --Advice to customers: stick to the chicken. They usually get that right. If you don't eat fried, you're out of luck. The grilled pork chops my friend had were dried out. --Advice to management: take everything except chicken off the menu. This place has the best damned fried chicken, oysters, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, French fries, and pork chops all fried to a nice golden brown and the surprising part, besides the portions being outrageously huge and larger than your grandma can toss at ya, is the food is not greasy. There was very little grease residue left on the paper towels under my delicious fried melt in your mouth oysters and my fantastic fried chicken. I was pleasantly surprised this cook knows how to work fried food better than a lot of the other places I consider to be gut grease bomb pits. The food is served extremely hot, which is a necessity to keep the food from absorbing large amounts of grease during the deep frying process, and it is damned tasty once it reaches the table. And believe me, once it did hit the table, with the amount of food that arrived, you would have thought Jesus was coming to his second last supper. This is my new Southern cooking haven. You will be pleasantly surprised, satisfied, and you owe it to yourself to take you and your friends with you to have a great Southern meal done the way it was meant to be! So I came here to try some very hyped up fried chicken and say goodbye to one of our staples in the DC Yelp crew. Sadly to say, I think this was PC W.'s last event with us as a resident...she will be missed. [silence] Ok - now that the obligatory moment of silence is over, it's time for the review (sorry dear, the show must go on without you)! Nestled next to the Armed Forces Retirement Home, HP is rather unassuming. You don't see a large sign out front and actually have to walk up on the building before you find it. Thankfully it's located on the top of a hill so if you park lower on the grade, you may get some exercise going up, but mercifully can roll down the street if needed when you're done. When I arrived at HP, I was surprised to see most of the crew there. Later, I learned that this was really to avoid a long line and huge backlog since only one fryer was operational and the food is cooked to order so you end up waiting 20 minutes for your order to complete. Su had already eaten his ENTIRE (yes, all 8 pieces) of fried chicken and looked as if he had been punched in the gut with a lead fist. I resolved not to do that. The service here is great - that is, if you have patience. Things won't come out immediately and you need to think of it as a mom and pop operation (it literally is) who will take care of you if you give them enough time. I asked for unsweetened iced tea and got it 10 minutes later - of course, since it was from scratch, I wasn't going to complain. We ordered a half-chicken dinner with mac and cheese, cole slaw, spinach, and potato salad. Of course, I also ordered some ham hocks and beans since I'm an old Southern-food sentimentalist and wasn't disappointed. Overall, the food was good and very reminiscent of my days in Tennessee. The fried chicken was delightfully crisp and seasoned and any desire for spice could be achieved with the bottle of hot sauce on the table. The ham hocks were good as well - lots of fat laden ham and beans that were as large as a thumb digit. The mac and cheese was delightfully greasy - although if you're not careful, this could turn into a meal in itself. The spinach was fresh and served with a whole pat of butter - oh, EVERYTHING had butter on it - and the potato salad was nice and creamy with an extra serving of egg yolk. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the coleslaw - but the dish itself was rather unremarkable. However, this was quickly made up by the overwhelmingly delicious corn bread muffin - soft, mealy, and buttery, this is what cornbread should be. I ended up ordering one to take home since Jeff and PC raped my plate with their "samples" (I still love you guys anyway). Also, it's worth noting that the beer is kept very cold - you end up getting your beer with ice crystals formed inside...it makes for a very nice treat with your chicken. You also see a cast of characters there that you won't usually see elsewhere. Neighborhood regulars, well dressed Masons, and of course, transplants from DC. 3.5 stars I'd say Hitching Post is a tad overrated, but the food is still really good. The atmosphere is pretty minimal, and you feel like you're over a family member's house that hasn't updated anything in a few decades. Not a complaint, just an observation. The menu is fairly minimal, with a selection of meat dinners (pork chops, chicken, crabcakes, etc) and sides. Sides are a bit disproportionately priced, and it almost makes more sense just to pay a few more dollars to get another entire chicken meal since it comes with 2 full sized sides. As everyone has mentioned, food is made to order so it takes a while. Coming with a big group is not a good idea, but if you stagger your arrival and order in shifts, like we did, you should have no problem getting fed within 30 minutes. Service is somewhat acerbic and it's hard to tell if they want you there or if you're annoying them, which took a bit away from the homestyle experience. As far as food, the first thing I got to taste was the mac 'n cheese and I would say it's probably the best thing I ate there. VERY heavy, and cheesy and made me want to go to sleep after eating it. It had a nice sharpness to it, and was nice and thick and clumpy. Potato salad was also very good, and wasn't all loaded up with dressing. Very tasty. The fried chicken is really crisp and juicy, but there wasn't a whole lot of flavor to it. Very little seasoning, and the hot sauce offerings were weak. Also, there appeared to be a lot of variance between orders as far as how many pieces you get. Some of us got 3 drumsticks, some got 2; some got 2 breasts, some got one. Portions are very impressive but I don't quite understand why it's impossible to just order a sane amount of food. Unless you're going for an awe-inspiring feat of eating, or really want to take leftovers home, it's pretty much pointless to order a chicken dinner on your own. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here, but doubt I'll be returning since it's quite a pain to get to. I feel like it's more suited to serving the immediate community and isn't really equipped, or aiming, to serve a broader audience. Great, friendly service. The inside was pretty packed around 8 on a Thursday, but the outside patio with about four tables was nearly empty. Menu is fairly simple - lots of chicken options, sandwiches, and southern sides like greens. Portions are generous for the mains, especially considering how reasonable prices are. A $16 chicken wings dinner had enough fried chicken wings to feed two people easily. The breading is delicious. The dinner comes with two sides - decent potato salad and super boring steamed broccoli with maybe some butter. A nice surprise was that they had fried pickles. They use the same coating as they do on the fried chicken and it's excellent. Adhered really well to the pickles even though they used spears not slices. read more

Actually, we were somewhat surprised by the interior--the new management evidently decided to do-wop the interior to make it a little more modern, a little more 20th century. Not that it made much of a difference with all the geriatic clientele cacklin' boldly and talkin' loudly with that whole WATCHOUTNOW types of personalities. The seating is very close to the point that you are going to bump into the person sitting behind you if you move your chair at all. The menu was decent, but it really doesn't prepare you for what you'll eventually be handed. I ordered the white-meat chicken dinner, NOT the Hitching Post Chicken Special. The difference? Well, when my meal arrived, on four separate plates, it consisted of 8-pieces of chicken, a plate of fries and a bowl of collards. WTF?! I asked the waitress if this was really MY meal. She exclaimed, yes...the Hitching Post special. I said I actually asked for the white-meat dinner (which doesn't even phonetically sound the same). Nevertheless, she quickly removed the plates and came back with the same amount of chicken, but supposedly all white meat--it wasn't, but at this point with Grady cackling at one table and Otis pontificating loudly at the bar about something he definitely wanted everyone in the place to hear, I was ret to go. How was it? Eh...it was alright. My friend had the fried shrimp, which he said he enjoyed, but not enough to pull a Meg Ryan in When Harry met Sally diner scene or anything. The chicken just tastes like chicken, plain bland chicken. It doesn't even have salt and pepper :( I like my chicken to be seasoned and flavorful. Also, these are the most enormous chickens I've ever seen! easily the size of a small turkey I'm sure. I ate my first two pieces as is. A breast and a thigh. The last piece I ate was a piece of breast, I ended up dousing it with hot sauce. I noticed other people were making a ketchup and hot sauce sauce for their chicken. Another great thing about this place will be the price is pretty al-right. $11.75 gets you a platter of eight pieces of chicken and two fairly large sides. My favorite side was the mac n cheese. It was cheesy, gooey, fresh and had a nice crust. Again, not much salt though. The other side I got was the spinach. Again, it tasted very fresh, there was some grit, seems like it was only steamed or lightly blanched. No salt. I got to try the collard greens, again, just boiled greens, no salt, no ham hock flavor :( The potato salad was also good. This is a good place to go and grub with friends. But, anything more than 15 isn't a good idea, 4 - 6 is the better group size. We sat at a table that seated 4 and it was jam packed with tons of food. Yes each person got a half platter of chicken, so there was roughly 32 pieces of chicken, plus 6 sides and 4 drinks at the table. That's how the carnie crew rolls! I maybe from California but my momma's from Texas. I grew up eating soul food at home and at places all over south central Los Angeles. So I'm used to eating this type of food. Now this is the best fried chicken in DC. I know a lot of people who swear by Daddy Graces, Oohs and Aahs or Henry's but they aren't any good. Also at many of these other famed places your food isn't made to order. The sides aren't made to order because that would be difficult / By no means is this the best fried chicken I've had in life. I think I make a better tasting fried chicken but I will not waste oil and stink up my house. Where the chicken excels , even over my own, is the texture of the crust. It's really the perfect texture they just need a few more spices in the coating like garlic powder or paprika. Now the greens were pretty good because they weren't mushy however I like them more tangy but that can be easily solved with a dash of vinegar or hot sauce. The mac and cheese was probably really good when it was fresh baked but the scoop that we got barely had any crispy crust to it. However it was really good. Now the potato salad was pretty good to, a little salty and in need of a little tanginess. Last the sweet tea was good but too bad it was the powdered lipton kind. My only real peeve was bread was included automatically.So everything was good, but not great , nothing really special. Now the value is crazy. They could make a whole lot more money if they wanted to. A half chicken dinner is actually 8 pieces with two sides and it will cost you 11.65. Never order anything here without sharing. Last I love the atmosphere cozy and old timey. I'm sure there is a lot black political talk going on in here on a regular basis. The old couple was worked over time when our party took over the restaurant so I won't comment on the service. They are so cute and I swore I was watching my life flash before my eyes. After a few trips to the Hitching Post, I've realized I don't need to go back. The food is good but not great, and the inconsistency in service is problematic. I know its a neighborhood joint and all, but on our last trip the waitress was so rude, our food took more than an hour to arrive, and was wrong when it hit the table. We were so hungry by then we ate it, but the response was just bitchy. And seriously, do I really need 5 pieces of fried fish in one dinner order? No. While its probably the best soul food in the city (which is a sad statement on DC if you ask me), its not for me. The chicken was dry and under seasoned. The shrimp was waaay overcooked and it;s the same price with 1/2 the portion. Mashed potatoes were soggy, too salty and had lots of under cooked garlic. If anyone ever needs a volunteer to pull clinic at the Soldier's Home I will be jumping up and down for that offer, just so that I can stop by the Hitching Post. The restaurant is straight across from the entrance in this inconspicuous townhouse with no sign with the name of the place, but you could tell that it's a restaurant by the neon beer signs. I could go on and on about the ambience which is this nice neighborhood hangout sorta feel but I'd rather save my energy to go on and on about their food. So the other reviewers aren't lying. Portions there are ridiculously huge. My friends and I each ordered the "half" fried chicken which comes with two sides for $12. The server warned us that it'll be a wait, because they start frying the chicken after it's ordered, which is fine by us. The sides came out 5-10 min before the chicken did. You get two whole corn on the cob if you order corn, and it was seriously a pound of each order of side item. The mac and cheese was creamy and rich with good burnt bits on top, collard greens were perfect and not too vinegary, and the potato salad was just beautiful. Then the fried chicken came out. We each got 5 pieces of chicken, whose parts much have come from the most steroided out poultry ever because each piece was so big. The batter was light and the meat was moist and well seasoned and just like everyone else commented on, it was somehow not greasy. Craziest part was that near the end of our meal in which we were able to only consume less than half of our meal, another plate of freshly fried chicken was brought out for us so we each had another big piece of chicken to take home in our doggie bag. My friend and I read about this place on here and had to try it out. I knew as soon as I called about the hours and they said "Ehhhhh, we just want to get the last order in by 9:45" and "we're closed Sundays and Mondays" to the paper towels used in lieu of actual napkins to being out of what you happen to want ("Oh baby, we just ran out of greens"), we had found the real deal. The other reviewers have pretty much summed it up--this place is delicious. The mismatched decor reminded me my great-grandmother's house in the sticks of Southeast Missouri. My friend and I opted for the "half-chicken" dinner (our "reward" for doing the 15-minute uphill walk from the Petworth Metro--we were glad the walk was downhill after dinner) with mac and cheese and broccoli as the sides. I am kind of afraid to see the entire chicken that a "half order" yields nine pieces of chicken (it must drink DC tap water). Chicken was delicious and greasy enough to be moist, but not so greasy that grease shot out of it when I took a bite (a la Church's). Mac and cheese was delicious. Closest thing I've found to Southern fried chicken since I've been in DC. And they had (real) sweet tea! The broccoli, while good, was basically a head of broccoli swimming in butter ("What are those pale yellow squares sitting on the top? Oh that's butter..."). I like broccoli and I like butter, but would probably opt for a different green veggie next time. Food is made to order, so I could see it being a bit slow during busier hours. We came late, around 8:45 on a Thursday and only waited about 15-20 minutes for our food. The best part? We got a crap ton of food for around $15. An old restaurant overlooking the US Army/Navy golf club, the Hitching Post has been around before I was born and you can tell from the decor and the booth. However, the fried chicken here is solid. Let me start by saying hitching post has delicious chicken meals. Coming from UK I always appreciated different foods and flavours, be it breakfast or full on meals. Chicken dinner was amazing and being a foodie I will say this any meal Experience reaches the penultimate when proper service is accompanied. Our waitress Arlene Savage is par excellence in her service, attentiveness, greeting and helping place our order even though she was the only one that day managing all tables. I have not experienced such perfect and top notch service even at high end restaurants. I will be going here more often even though I live far away. Happened upon the Hitching Post while visiting the Lincoln Cottage. The patio with lights drew us in. We were just looking for a warm drink and were pleasantly surprised by French press coffee & homemade cornbread. I thought it was some of the best chicken I've ever had, but the sides were somewhat forgettable. Our waitress was excellent, but it took a long time for the food to arrive, and there was only one other party in the entire restaurant. 4 star food at 5 star prices with a 5 star ambiance? I'll round up to five. Everything everyone says is true with one exception - don't get the half chicken special. It's alright, and for the unbelievably low price, it's a pretty good deal, but the breasts and thighs end up overcooked. The plate of wings at the table next to me looked uniformly golden and crisp, whereas some of my chicken was pretty brown. If you want chicken, do the wings. However, you don't want the chicken at all. My girlfriend got the trout and it was really something special. Perfectly crispy and flavorful. She ordered and paid for the sandwich and got four huge filets - two whole fish for ten bucks! They messed up the order and didn't bring bread, so I'm not sure if she got the platter portion size or not. Even if it was, for 15 bucks with two huge sides, that's a steal as well. Out of the three sides I tried, the mac n cheese and coleslaw were both excellent, and the fries were hand cut and incredibly hot. I really love the environment - you're hanging out in someone's kitchen and they're cooking for you at a price that almost may as well be free. They screw up your order? Food takes too long? Man, they're hooking you up! Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
