My wife wanted to take some Korean food to our friend who is at the Children's hospital near -by and saw this Cafe. She went in as we could not find parking so I parked around the corner & waited to come back to pick her up. She liked the vibe and customer service. She got three bibimbap bowls to go. Around $15 per bowl which seems high for the size and no egg on top. The gochujang had a different flavor to it, but not bad. Wife & friend (both Korean) gave the bowls a 3 1/2 to 4. This is a great little spot it packs a big punch. Had a candlemaking class here which was a lot of fun while we were there. I decided I would partake in a pumpkin espresso martini it was so good. The restaurant was very busy due to the candle making class I think they need another barista to help. I love the class and I liked my cocktail. The only thing that bothers me is the parking situation for the location. At night it's a little concerning. I look forward to more events hopefully during the weekend daytime. Kindness is key. Sad to see slowdive go, but I love how this space is still being utilized for artists! Applications are currently open to submit work for display and artists receive 100% commission. I love love love love that I really enjoyed the coffee. I got a raspberry mocha and she got the white chocolate toffee latte. Neither were too sweet, but the flavor was on point! We enjoyed our drinks down to the foam! I've been trying to go here since the $7.57 deals but I'm glad we finally came around to meet up here so we can try the Korean bowls. I thought they were tasty. I got the classic (pictured on the bottom) and she got the Seoul train (pictured in the top right corner). I also got a Korean corndog, the type with the mozzarella and fish cake. Sadly there was no cheese pull but that's okay lol. Alright so let's get back to the kindness part. Service was phenomenal. I believe the owner's name was Joseph? He took our order, brought us our food and drinks, and checked up on us frequently. I felt very taken care of. If I had any questions, he had answers. When I saw that there was a bibimbop place that had recently opened up in the Norfolk area, I knew I had to check it out when I was in town! The High Cup not only offers bibimbops, but they are slowly adding additional items, such as the Korean hot dog and grilled cheeses. They also have coffee, espresso, and tea beverages. I ordered: +the Classic - this had marinated thinly-sliced ribeye (aka, bulgogi), bean sprouts, carrots, kale slaw, scallions, sesame oil, and cucumbers; I asked to add kimchi, but they didn't have this for a side (which is strange!) - I ended up being charged for a 'bottle of water' to make this addition; the kimchi came in a small cup, but wished it was larger in portion; I felt that the 'hot sauce' could have been more thicker and more creamier, as it was super thin in consistency; the veggies were super fresh, and this was definitely a healthy-tasting bowl; the hubs really enjoyed this bowl, way more than I did! Service was friendly, and there seem to be a good amount of people inside, enjoying their beverages and eats. I visited with D.P. to take part in the $7.57 deal (thanks, Yoonie) and took everything to-go. The owner, Joseph, was so friendly and patient while our indecisive selves figured out what to order. We both ordered the Classic Korean Bowl (marinated bulgogi, bean sprouts, carrots, kale slaw, hot sauce, scallions, sesame oil, roasted sesame seeds, and cucumber). It was FANTASTIC. I love bulgogi, and their marinade is one of best I've ever tried. This version of the bowl for the $7.57 deal is smaller than normal, we were told, but I thought it was the perfect size and hope this becomes a regular option in the future. We also ordered the slushies. It was kind of the owner to offer samples of all three flavors: mango, strawberry, and peach. My favorite was the mango but the other two flavors are on par as well. I ended up getting a blend of strawberry and peach while D.P. got the mango. Fair warning, they're very sweet but I thoroughly enjoyed them. Naturally, I added bourbon to the second half when I got home. We also tried the pastries - a coffee muffin and sweet almond cake. Delicious! My friend and I tried this place on our lunch break and we were so impressed! The owners were kind and genuine people, served us great food, and we had good conversations about their business and the art in the cafe. The art supports local artists and rotate on a schedule! It felt like a mini museum walking through their space! The storefront is right off a main road but the owner informed us that both of the gas stations across the street and adjacent to the store are available to park! I tried the classic bowl which comes with bulgogi and various Korean sides like pickled cucumber, carrots and bean sprouts. Before making your way out here, know parking is difficult. The side building may or may not have spots, and when we drove by, it was full of broken glass. We got a bowl and a canned drink with the deal, along with an iced white chocolate toffee latte (that was just okay) and a hash brown Korean corndog. The reason for the 4 stars is the bowl. I really don't think we got the bowl we ordered, and by the time we opened it, we were too far out. Our receipt said 'Seoul Train', but I'm 85% sure we got the 'Kimchi Crunch'?? It was either chicken or pork, and not beef. I'll attach a picture. (I see the business owner often replies, so if you do here, please tell me what we got, it was delicious.) The bowl we got was still fantastic. It was tender, spicy yet sweet, crunchy, and very fresh tasting. I want to say it was the owner who took care of us at the register. I could be wrong, but either way, he was so patient and nice. Even said hi to my kiddo who was waking up from her cat nap, and goodness was she grouchy. If coming with a significant other who you share food with, you'll want to get your own bowl. It's a lot smaller than what the pictures led me to believe and I was sad I had to share my bowl. Came here with my friend after an event to check out the 757 Yelp deal where you get a Korean bowl and a soda for $7.57. This shop is located at Slowdive which was a favorite spot of mine before it closed. A lot of the charming energy is still intact which was a mood booster for sure. During our visit they were putting up art work which was fun to see. This business has only been open for 4 months and they are continuing to grow and add things which I love. Soon they'll have Alcoholic beverages, cronuts, juices and more. We were helped by Joseph who was super sweet and walked us through the menu and answered all our questions. He suggested his favorites and told us the best way to eat what we ordered. We ordered the Kimchi Krunch bowl which was a chicken bowl with fresh veggies, rice & a creamy sauce. We were also we're inclined to order the Korean corn dogs. I got the sweeter option that had cheese and fish cake and Ashleigh got the potato one. Both were yummy and had a satisfying cheese pull. The Korean bowl was good as well with a great balance of flavors. Overall I like the ambiance and I'm excited to come back and try the coffee which looks good. This review comes after my 2nd visit to the shop. I will start by saying parking on the closed Shell has station next door is okay, but be aware it is a homeless haven. They don't bother you but it can be jarring for a first time visit. The interior is on the first floor. There is a clean cover inside that's lofty and artsy with a cozy vibe to read a book, draw, study, or meet up with a friend and grab coffee. They have a good menu option of Korean bowls I have tried several that your can't go wrong with trying. I ordered a strawberry slush that was good and last time had the Mango that amazing. There are a lot of local artists displayed on the wall to purchase or grab a board game and play. The wait for good is short round 10 min or less, but the flavors are filling and enjoyable. We had a wonderful experience at The High Cup! The gentleman that took our order has always been so personable and friendly both times we've been. I believe it's just him who runs the show - and he does a great job. The place is small but very hip and cozy. I really like that local art is always featured and switched out. We came later in the evening, so many of the food items we wanted were out. For the Seoul Train bowl, they were out of bulgogi, so we ordered it with chicken and it was delicious. The kimchi that came with it was the best I've ever tasted. He also added an egg free of charge. This is a nice little spot added to the local Norfolk food scene. This place definitely has a neighborhood vibe where you can just walk in with friends and chill and those who work there will probably sit down with you and join in. That's how I was feeling on my first visit and I could see the interactions with customers coming in. Now to the food. As I said this was my first visit and going over the menu it was a bit hard to choose. When it comes to bowls I usually go with what would be considered the classic but decided to go with the southwest bowl. I was told it had a little kick but trust me if you worry about that spice or heat level you will not have any issue with this selection. In fact to make sure you enjoy your meal if you get it as takeout I was offered some pointers on how to mix up the sauce that came with it by those who work there. The bowl was very good and a nice balance of all the ingredients. Many times I have experienced bowls where there is more of one ingredient than the other. You know how it is when you get any meal with shrimp in the title and then looking for the shrimp like buried treasure. Not the case here at High Cup. Good flavor all the way around and even when I mixed because I did listen about the sauce I got a bite of everything. Now you probably think the bowl was the star and it was but a nice surprise I found was when I ordered the peach slushy. Order it and pour a little something extra in it. When you get home of course and if you choose. The good thing is that you might not have to wait until you get home as I was told that they are working on getting a liquor license. Found this cafe after looking for a new spot to check out. Its a super cool space located right in between Neon district and Ghent. The decor and vibes are super laid back but trendy, and would make a good spot to hang out or study depending on how busy they are. They also feature local art in the cafe and even have the artists name listed up on the menu board which I thought was super thoughtful and unique. Their menu features korean bibimbap bowls and a good selection of teas, coffees, and smoothies. I had a vanilla latte and their classic bowl and was happy with my order. My only "criticism" would be that the bulgogi in the bowl was a tad bit salty, but super flavorful and delicious! The gentleman who took my order was super sweet and friendly. Okay if you wonder if this 4 month old cafe is a must visit - it is. Parking is hard to find, just to note that you can park either at the gas station/repair shop next door, or find parking along the nearby streets/blocks. New excitement is brewing at an innovative new art gallery and coffee shop in the NEON District of downtown Norfolk. Some delicious Korean inspired bowl dishes and other eats and drinks are being served up as well. The High Cup opened in May of this year at the intersection of Princess Anne Road and Monticello Avenue, inside the building that housed the former Frank Spicer Restaurant Supply Company that was in operation for 41 years before closing in 2019. The building now goes by the name of the Slowdive Building. The High Cup is the next stage in the evolution of The Slowdive Gallery, a restaurant and art gallery that previously occupied the same space. It is now owned and operated by a young visionary by the name of "Jo Jo" Nieves and his father. A conversation with Jo Jo revealed an ambitious long range four-phase plan for his business. It is his dream for The High Cup to become the type of urban community gathering place with art, coffee, and good eats that is found in some of our larger metropolitan cities. New pieces of art work from local artists are displayed on its walls for their customers to enjoy at the beginning of each month. Participating artists receive a 100% commission on all of their sold pieces. A recent live painting event was held on a recent Saturday night with the sounds of an electronic pianist. To quote the owner from their Facebook page: "Every Saturday, we transform The High Cup into a symphony of art and sound." I love the artsy vibe of their interior. Games galore adorn their tables, with Chess being one of the more popular choices. I brought my regulation tournament Checkerboard during one visit, and Jo Jo held me to a draw. Parking is available at the side of the building at the site of an old Shell station. A few additional parking spaces are available across the street at a cleaners store. Additional parking spaces are in the works. I am not a coffee drinker, but the following quote from their Facebook page is enticing: "Our Nitro Cold Brew machine is up and running, serving you that creamy, velvety, smooth coffee goodness you've been waiting for." I have enjoyed the following Korean Bowls to date: THE CLASSIC: Thinly Sliced Ribeye Bulgogi with Bean Sprouts, Carrots, Cucumbers, Kale, Slaw, Scallions, and Sesame Oil over Rice with our House Made Korean Hot Sauce. This one is my personal favorite, and I have enjoyed it twice. The balance of ingredients in this bowl works for me just a wee bit more than the others. The bulgogi was juicy and delicious. The bright green leafy kale was a standout ingredient, delivering a taste and texture that combined beautifully with the other veggies for a divine symphony of flavors. Their Korean hot sauce sings with a nice balance of hot and sweet love notes, with just enough heat to send my hot tooth into a happy dance. They were out of bulgogi during my second time enjoying this dish, and their marinated chicken worked nicely as a substitute. My Rating: 5 Stars. THE SEOUL TRAIN BOWL: Thinly Slice Ribeye Bulgogi with Corn, Cucumber, Kale, Slaw, Kimchi, Creamy Sriracha, Garlic, Scallions, and Roasted Sesame Seeds over Rice. This one is the owner's personal favorite, and it is a close second on my list. They were out of bulgogi when I ordered this one, but their marinated chicken scored once again. I also substituted their Korean Hot Sauce for the Creamy Sriracha, as I am allergic to the mayonnaise that comes with it. The combination of ingredients delivered a pleasant medley of tastes and textures. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. THE SOUTHWEST BOWL: Chicken, Corn, Carrots, Kale, Slaw, Scallions, and their House Made Korean Hot Sauce over Rice. This was another winner and is currently tied with their Seoul Train Bowl for second place on my list. Their leafy green Kale, Korean Hot Sauce, and the other supporting ingredients combined together once again for an exhilarating taste experience. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. I also enjoyed their Mango Strawberry Slushie, which hit the spot on a hot afternoon. It was delightfully smooth and full of flavor with just the right amount of sweetness without being overpowering. My Rating: 5 Stars. They also offer a unique commercial beverage by the name of Hiyo, which comes in a 12-ounce can in three different flavors. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only place that sells it locally. It is described on the can as a "Non-alcoholic social tonic." It contains Ashwagandha and a combination of other natural ingredients that produces a unique calming effect. The company motto is "Feel The Float." The High Cup is in its early developmental stages as a dynamic community gathering spot. New menu items will be added as they become able to add new staff members. Korean Corn Dogs were recently added, and they are hoping for their liquor license in December. The food was great, as well as the latte, I would definitely come back for both. My only negative feedback is that I don't believe my deal was really honored. Their menu only shows one size and one price for the ALL their Korean bowls $12. The portion that you are served is not the normal bowl size and was more like kids portion/meal. My feedback is that when advertising specials to attract new customers, you should clearly outline what they are getting. If you offer a small and large bowl, then that should be advertised. However, based on the current menu, there is only one size. If you're going just for the deal, you will be happy with the taste and flavor, but you will definitely still be hungry after because what you get is only a snack. read more

I've had The High Cup bookmarked for a few months for a must try coffee spot. I was enticed by the Korean Bowls and their creative menu. It stood out to me from the common menus I find at most coffee shops. The coffee was amazing! I got an iced CocoMocha and I loved it! (forgot to take a pic- but it was a great value for the size of the coffee) Based on other reviews I knew I was going to order the Fireball bowl. I loved the sticky rice - it's hard to get a perfect sticky rice consistency but they nailed it. The kimchi was delicious too. For only $12 a bowl the portion size was a great deal, I left full & happy. The vibe is super cute. I brought some work with me and I was able to relax. It wasn't super loud which I appreciated. I loved the small touches of local art and especially the anime playing on the TV. It gives a homely feel. The owners are very welcoming and consistently check on you during your experience. What a cool joint! Walked into a space with chic and modern decor with beautiful art from local artists on the walls. I was greeted by Joseph, the owner, and he was so kind and welcoming! He was very knowledgeable about his menu, and gave me recommendations on what I should try. As part of Yelp's 757 deal, I got the Fireball bowl and a can of soda (side note: how did I not know there was cranberry ginger ale and why is the can coloring so cute???). The bowl was very good: nicely flavored and the sauce may look intimidating spice wise, but it just gives a nice simmer and not bad at all. Definitely hit the spot. Talking more with Joseph, I can tell he's very passionate about his cafe and what he serves on the menu, and you can really see and taste the quality in his food! I was lucky enough to get some insider info on something that he was planning to release, and from what he showed, it looks like it'll be an absolute banger! My coworkers and I have been trying spots that are near work and this place is only ten minutes away. It's super cute in there and I love the vibes. I got the white chocolate toffee latte and the classic bowl. The coffee was great and not overly sweet! The bulgogi was delicious, I loved the sauce that came with the classic bowl. Joseph is super nice and great to talk to! I also think it's awesome they support local artists by displaying/selling their work. read more
