I didn't love the oat milk option they use in their lattes, as it wasn't creamy enough, but I would try something else if I'm ever back in the area. I ordered the egg & cheese croissant sandwich with the bacon on the side, and it was crispy bacon like I like it! Never new this place was here! Nice and quaint Bistro coffee shop! Plus you can shop! They have nick-nacks you can buy as well as house decore. The service was very good. In an attempt to support local coffee instead of big business, because honestly the coffee and the experience are typically better, I find myself checking this place off my list of "yes" local coffee locations. Upon arrival, there were very few people waiting in line. There were two women in front of me and a woman waiting at the table in the main room. After looking over the list of syrup flavors while I waited, when it was my turn I asked if the crossed out lavender flavor was seasonal or if it was just currently out of stock. The gentleman picked up the lavender syrup and showed me that they had it and said we crossed it out in pen, so we can't just erase it. Which is fine, but please don't make it seem like I'm the silly one for questioning it. It can't be that hard to print a new one, or simply answer without making the customer feel stupid for asking for clarification. After ordering, it took forever to get my drink. 15 minutes passed before we got our muffin (that wasn't even warmed up) and 18 minutes before I got my latte. It was so incredibly hot that I didn't dare try it right away - and when I did it wasn't good. I'm not sure if it was the oat milk, or the espresso's itself but i didn't even finish half of it. It almost tasted like watered down oat milk mixed with a drip coffee. The service wasn't very friendly, and my latte wasn't good. It also took far too long - there were 5 total guests, and I watched 2 of them order directly in front of me. The muffin was good, my son ate most of it and I finished what was leftover. read more

Cute lil place with their own parking area. Gave it a 4/5 because of customer service. They weren't really friendly and it took some time for our order to come out. Now their Panini was delicious. I ordered the trail blazer which had pesto, avocado, turkey and provolone cheese. The crisp of the sandwich was present with each bite. They have specialty coffees, sodas, CBD infused drinks and alcoholic beverages as well. They have arts and crafts, kitchenware, furnitures, concealed weapon hand bags, antiques knives, jewelery...etc for sale! Really a cute area. I searched coffee places in Chesapeake and found this gem! I loved the pics so I suggested this place to meet with a group of friends. I got a panini w/ chips and "love potion" latte. Some of my other friends got paninis with side salads which looked great. A few others got the yummy looking muffins that they enjoyed. They were pleased that they offered to heat the muffins up for them. Loved the decor and overall ambience of this place! Can't wait to go back!! I was in a rush to work, but had to eat something and found Hickory Trading Company! I need to come here more often, it is amazing! Parking lot is small but doable, and totally worth it. Hickory Trading Company has a comfy cafe feel. I ordered an iced coffee, chocolate muffin pastry, and a Panini with a side salad. I ended up buying a piece of art I found there too that I couldn't resist to buy! The food and drink were delicious! I loved the chocolate muffin, it was to die for! The space inside is decorated with artists art, trinkets, tin metal signs, jewelry, etc. Staff was friendly and was very attentive in making sure my order was correct. It was fun to browse around looking at all the colorful and fun things they have. You also get this sense of community and an understanding of cool happenings in the Chesapeake area! I almost like the browsing part of my visit as much as my food and drink! I can't wait to go back to Hickory Trading Company! read more

Buckle in, folks... this is a good one. It was truly a blessing to have found this place when I did- I can't believe I didn't know it existed sooner since they have been here for two years now. It's a cross between a coffee house/cafe & a gift shop. Food/drink: Downstairs you will find the counter to order: they offer the full range of coffee/espresso drinks (locally roasted beans) + tea, a handful of breakfast options (such as oatmeal, grits, pastries), & thoughtfully crafted lunch sandwiches & salads. My cactus toast (avocado toast) was seriously amazing- I should have gotten two pieces. The ingredients were so fresh. Their drinks are priced much lower than your typical coffee shop, and the sandwiches/salads are fair too. Gifts: What a large variety! They feature the work of many local artisans & entrepreneurs. You will find products ranging from shirts, winter accessories, woodwork such as bowls, jewelry, local honey, skin products & much more. Everything is high quality & it is fun to walk around the store while you are waiting for your food/drinks to see what may catch your eye. The vibe: Two stories hosting couches, chess tables, a couple little rooms to explore with more for sale, Christian music playing softly, and the absolute kindest employees. It's perfect for getting work done- I like to go upstairs for a little more privacy & plenty of space to settle in. They also make sure to treat you like family. It's a very casual environment- you can even wait to pay until you leave if you plan on hanging out for a couple hours. The mission: This is the heart of the place. I was fortunate enough to meet Patti, the owner on my first visit. Her heart for serving others & building up the local community is so evident. Hickory Trading Company exists to support their accompanying nonprofit, the Hitching Post Educational Center which serves those with special needs- particularly autism. One way is through employment where students are able to learn skills & become leaders. They also bring awareness to the community through hosting events. Many of the staff volunteer their time to better support the nonprofit. This place is the definition of a hidden gem. I can't say enough good things about what they're doing in Chesapeake & Hampton Roads as a whole. I can't wait to see how they continue to build up this community- I will be a supporter. read more

I've heard a great things about Hickory Trading so my husband & I thought we would try it. It is a cute spot with a lot of items for sale. We ordered 2 omelets, one with ham & mushrooms and the second onion & mushrooms. I really wanted a croissant but they were out (at 9:00 in the morning) so I ordered fruit. We were then told they were out of mushrooms, and could pick something else for our omelettes. We didn't order coffee, just 2 waters. 45 minutes later our food was brought out, no water, we had to ask again for it. The omelettes were okay, but not 26.00 worth good. The part that made us decide not to return was, when we were leaving my husband went back to the register and asked where to leave the tip, he was told in the bucket. Although the server saw him put a nice tip in the bucket, there was no acknowledgment. No thank you, no come again, no kiss my foot, no nothing. With the addition of at least 5 other coffee shops within a 1 mile radius, you would think they would be appreciative of the business, I guess not. read more

I came here on a Tuesday late morning for a bite to eat and a coffee to start my day full of errands. I've heard many things about this place but haven't had the time until now. There are limited parking spaces so you have to be quick to find a spot or go up a bit to the next parking lot at Amazing Glazed. It looks soooo much bigger than it looks on the outside. They were moderately busy but it seemed like a good flow was going on. When it became my turn, I apologized to the lady at the counter for my indecisiveness and that I welcomed any suggestions. She obliged with a smile. I opted for an amaretto latte and a ham, egg, and cheese croissant with fruit salad. I found a perfect spot at the window upfront. It was hand-painted with a version of the gameboard of Sorry with some sorry game cards. I will say, I waited for a good 20 minutes before I received my order. It came out wrong so I asked for the right order. They were apologetic and remade the order. They brought out my sandwich and it looked lovely! The only thing was that they had a drizzle of what I think is balsamic vinaigrette on the sandwich that made me eat it with a fork and knife. The fruit salad was delightful. It was a beautiful mix of banana, strawberry, and kiwi drizzled with a light dressing of which I will guess is honey and citrus. Oh, and my amaretto latte was delicious! I also overheard some patrons talk about their side business or (non-profit organization maybe?) of special needs kids and this just melted my heart. It confirms why I love to eat local!! I really like this place and I know you would too! Also, they have tons of goodies/gifts to buy such as candles, wooden decor, signs, coffee, snacks, pictures, knick-knacks, etc. You'll love this place! read more

My cappuccino is dependent on who is working. Sometimes I get foam and sometimes it's like a big cup of regular coffee. I frequent most coffee shops in town and I love this one but I do wish they could be more consistent with my beloved cappuccino. Either way I'll be back but I hope this doesn't fall o. I just had a bacon egg and cheese croissant. Actually, I had one yesterday with my latte and a glass of water. Today, I came back and ordered the same thing. This place has everything; a peaceful atmosphere, soft chairs (or regular tables if you like), great coffee, delicious sandwiches, and a staff that clearly includes some special needs employees. I have been here a number of times and each time, there were people working here that are SUPER helpful while displaying a personality that demonstrates a special need of some sort. I love this place! Such a cute and homelike atmosphere, the food is delicious, and the workers are sooo friendly! I've been coming here about 4 years, but just never wrote a review. Today I came again and had the toasted marshmallow chocolate latte (delish!), a toasted and cheesy bacon and turkey panini, with a side of fresh fruit that consisted of several types of berries and grapes. It's never crowded, I sometimes come with friends, other times alone and sit and read a book with my food and coffee. They also have all kinds of cute gifts, homemade cards, and coffee beans for purchase. Lastly, you are contributing to a great cause when coming here bc they also employ many individuals with disabilities such as autism and Down Syndrome who work alongside others to get valuable work experience. I saw on a few other reviews that a few people were offended they weren't thanked for the tip, or didn't respond how the customer was expecting. I've always had excellent service, but if that should occur, it may be that the person has autism or is working h on social skills. Again, I've had a great experience but I could imagine that might be what happened for some of the reviews. read more

I wanted so badly to love it, but it missed the mark for me. The coffee - the reason I initially went - was mediocre, and my sandwich was no better than I could make at home.... And it took twenty minutes to make a grilled cheese. It was very expensive for the quality of the food itself. However, I love what they stand for and support. I stumbled upon this place after an appointment and instantly in love! The coffee is delicious and the environment is happy and lighthearted. This shop is non profit and all proceeds go to autistic education! They even have autistic people learning trades and business by helping around the shop and they are so nice and sweet and funny to say the least! I was soo pleased and surprised by this place and will come back whenever I can.
