It's a nonprofit community hub where everyone's welcome, and you really feel that vibe the moment you walk in. There's tons of space for remote work, community meetings, or just hanging out, and I noticed several groups using the open, airy cafe for coworking and conversation. The staff was incredibly friendly and made us feel right at home. I ordered the Monticello breakfast sandwich (with sausage, egg, cheddar, arugula, and a delicious aioli on an English muffin) and their Brown Sugar No. 05. A creative blend of brown sugar, rosemary, cinnamon, espresso, milk, and a hint of orange bitters. It was unique, refreshing, and seriously addicting! My friend went for the brown sugar latte and a blueberry bagel with cream cheese, which she loved. I was so interested in their nonprofit work, and after a quick website visit, I learned that Coalescence creates space for all kinds of community groups to gather and learn together, partnering locally and globally to lift up important work. Events, co-working, and shared community workspace are all available, with donors and volunteers supporting the mission so this resource keeps growing. I came on a day they held an event and it took almost 40 minted from start of the order to the time I received my coffee. My Dad was supposed to be at the airport in 2 hours and we didn't have enough time to do other errand's beforehand because of the extended wait. There were 2 people staffed, and they had a room with about 25 people in the back they were making hand crafted orders for along with 7-8 people in the regular cafe. They were staffed for the 7-8 people and understaffed for the 25 plus people in the back. I was disappointed as my friend told me she liked this coffee shop because the measurements were precise. We waited 40 minutes for a pour over. I gave 2 stars because the coffee flavor was actually good. The low stars is so that they read this and never do that to their staff again! If you have a large party please make sure you're staffed for such event! read more

What a cool vibe in this place! This isn't the Green Siren people. This is what an American coffee bar should be - relaxed, high end, great coffee options and a friendly barista who has a care about his or her craft. After two disappointing stops for coffee so far today, I got to Coalescence at around 8 am and found a seat in the corner. With my laptop, I was here for four hours working and no one minded at all. I enjoyed one of the coffees off their "signature menu," a very creative drink called "Taste the Rainbow." Somehow, a double espresso with a pomegranate-lime reduction that was shaken over ice with plum bitters. It sounds strange and it was, but it was also refreshing and delicious. Couldn't find parking on street in front but they have large parking lot in back. Came just for coffee so didn't get to try their food offerings. Ok, I was deceived thinking the matcha would be good here. First of all, the main issue was my matcha coming in a water cup (like I swear it was even smaller than a water cup to be honest). With all that said, I spent over $9 on that. If I knew it would be priced like that, I would never have gotten it. And the matcha wasn't even ceremonial tasting... never coming back here. I was especially impressed by the diversity of the space - people all around were studying, working, chatting, and there was even a private party happening in a different room. I tried the rose latte (I'm more into sweet drinks, which there weren't a lot of options for) and it was the perfect balance of sweetness, coffee, and fragrant rose flavor that felt very authentic. I should have complained about the temperature but just wasn't in the mood, nor did I want to emphasize that I wanted it hot when ordering because that seems insulting and can change how they do it if it's done right normally. I understand that coffee is not supposed to be boiling (195°F to 205°F // 90°C to 96°C), but there's a big difference between boiling and bathwater - I just don't think the milk was heated up enough. read more

There's so many windows in the building that give it this bright open space. Which is great for people who like a little sunlight when they're doing some studying or work. Talk about a cool place. The inside of this place is absolutely beautiful. I went with a group of people we were doing a Saturday morning coffee crawl and walk. This place was on our list of places to go. So glad I went such an open space great for a large group to meet. Watching them make your order was like watching a scientist or chemist. I was tossed on whether or not to order a cold brew coffee or try something new It was suggested that I try the Churchill cold, and boy was it delicious I am excited to go back. They offer classes every Saturday on coffee. I have to try the class. Amazing spot to study and/or relax!!! Their coffee is great and they have a great variety to choose from. The baristas knew it was my first time here and they were very patient with me and explained what was on their menu, which drinks they're known for and what their recommendations were. I've been looking for a nice coffee spot to do some studying and I believe I found it! Super calm environment - calming music all around and it's not too loud and obnoxious. Everyone else in the room is studying/working too so they're pretty considerate of the environment as well. It's a spacious cafe and they even have an event room that you can reserve if you want. What a little gem! I was in the area and was looking for a place to get some work done and Coalescence Coffee (CC) was nearby. I had heard so much about CC, so I was excited to check it out! - Parking - Street parking. It's in an industrial area. My visit was in the morning so there were a few spaces. The neighboring businesses all seem to have their own private lots you're not competing with their patrons. - Vibe - This is the type of space I DREAMED of living in back home in Montreal, a big warehouse-type loft, high ceilings, bright, garage door (I bet it's awesome to sit by this door when they open it on nice days). The service counter is the star of the show and is located in the center of the space and seating surrounds it. It's super minimalistic and open so you can see them at work, crafting the lattes, doing pour overs etc. There are tables and chairs, bar like seating (chair height, not bar height) with stools and also a large private room in the back with more communal tables and chairs. I think they open it up to the general public when there are no "booked" events going on as I saw loner teleworkers in there during my visit. There is a nice touch of greenery all over the space with the minimalistic design. There is merch, but not cluttered. - TLC - There were two people working behind the bar during my visit. Both very warm and friendly. Made great suggestions based on my preferences. Super personable carrying on natural, easy convo, not forced. They also seem to know a lot of the patrons, so that says a lot, right? - Sips - I initially was going to go for "Treat Yo Self" which is a coffee milkshake made with Lolly's (for the out of towners, this is a local small business located in VB) ice cream. After I paid, the man who had helped me realized that they didn't receive their morning delivery, so he assisted me in making another choice. I ended up getting a Mocha with an add on of their Sugar and Spice syrup (cardamom and ginger), served hot. This worked out well anyway, because it's nicely air conditioned in there and I was a little chilly anyway! It was delicious and had a beautiful latte art on top (see pic)! I was ALMOST sad to drink it up! Almost... this drink was perfect! I loved mochas and I love the cardamom and ginger (almost like a touch of chai which I love so best of both worlds). - Noms - Almond cake - this is made with almond flour and baked in a mini bundt shape. So cute! Dusted with a bit of icing sugar. It was really nice. Kind of reminded me of a pound cake. A denser type of cake, but light at the same time. - Notes - *Perfect for teleworking/studying/me-time/etc. Wifi password is posted at the front of the service counter. Communal tables for small gatherings. There are outlets at some tables. Noise level is not bad at all *All of their syrups are house made. *All of their bites are house made as well. It took about 10 mins to get a Cortado with Almond Milk ($4+) and a sparkling water ($4+). After paying for the sparkling water, they asked if we wanted an 10oz or 16oz... after we paid... it was odd. Beverages (3/5): the Cortado was good, wasn't expecting it to be so small since it's supposed to be a shot of espresso with equal amounts of milk. This place is a vibe!!! I stumbled here while checking out another restaurant around the corner. I quickly looked up the place on Yelp and saw the raging reviews so I really wanted to check it out for myself and be the judge of it. When you walk in, it's like this spacious chill spot for coffee lovers. The minimalist design with the industrial light brown and black decor was everything! I love the spacing between each tables that gives you a sense of privacy when having conversations or being on your laptop. I was greeted with a smile by the owner Jen, who walked me through their menu and background. She talked to me like she knew me and I can believe she never met a stranger who wasn't a friend. She was super sweet! For my first visit, I tried an iced coffee with lavender and oat milk. The drink was so good! I forgot to ask for decaf because my sensitivity to caffeine. I know... I know why am I drinking coffee? Shhhh... But the coffee had great taste, not bitter and it was a perfect balance to the milk and syrup. Coalescence is an EXPERIENCE. Visiting from out of town and was instantly drawn to the minimalist aesthetic and approach here. From the beautifully simple black storefront facade, the wide open bright white interior, the painted menu on the wall, sleek furniture - I loved everything about the decor and ambience. It just goes to show that, even with all this space, no need to fill it with stuff - let your product speak for you. And that it did! The coffee menu was simplistic but beautifully and carefully crafted, with tons of seasonal and specialty options too. It was honestly hard to pick!! I absolutely adored the Kiss Me latte which featured made in house salted caramel syrup along with the baked goods - also made in house. Last but not least - the two behind the counter were incredible. The most warm and hospitable - they made us feel at home and walked us through menu options. This coffee shop is the perfect place to study or do work. They have so much seating that is spaced out, and they even have multiple quiet rooms to work in. Their coffee and drinks are definitely for a refined palette. The menu is on the expensive side, and they seem to be sold out of some of their food options often. Also the wait time to be served is generally long. If you're there doing work or studying, it's not bad. But if you're actually hungry, you may be disappointed with the wait. CORTADO My go to at coffee shops is a cortado which is equal parts coffee and steamed milk; it was smooth and their coffee lies on a bit of the bitter side but wonderfully rich as well. Their star of the show is their menu of espresso mocktails Their menu is rotating, but I had the Espresso & Tonic which if you like nitro brew or sparkling water it's a similar vibe- dark, espresso forward with bold coffee flavor with carbonation adding fizz throughout and a bit of bite and acidity at the end. An acquired taste for sure so know that going in. Their other mixed drinks are wonderfully and creatively crafted, taking you on a flavor and texture journey which is the fun of it. Homemade syrups, fresh herbs, and careful technique make for beautiful drinks that will change how you think about coffee and they are the only place in town that really does it like this as far as I know. I am totally IN LOVE with Coalescence Coffee! This uber hip place is located in the Railroad District and their mission, vision, and their values are just amazing. They are all about giving back to the community and supporting in any way possible to help Norfolk thrive. Their drink menu offers the usual drips/pour overs as well as their Signature Menu, which I'm obsessed with! I tried the Black is the New Blue (a cocktail-inspired beverage with double espresso, and housemade blackberry, lime reduction and cranberry bitters) and the Orange & Juniper (espresso and tonic with a housemade orange juniper simple syrup) - both these drinks were beautifully crafted and presented, and they both tasted delicious! The hubs and I also had to try their housemade desserts, and a couple of their vegan desserts made by a local bakery, Black Rabbit Delights - a Cookies 'n Cream Rice Krispie Treat, a Lemon Blueberry Muffin, and a Coconut Blackberry Lime Muffin - MY GOODNESS - THESE WERE ALL SO FANTASTIC! Those muffins, though - they were so moist and so flavorful, I've never had vegan baked goods as good as these! The staff here are so friendly, kind, welcoming, and super informative - if you have any questions, they can answer them for you. They can also make recommendations based on what you like, too, so don't be shy to ask! Stopped in because the shop we were headed too had the route blocked by a stopped train. Honestly had never seen this spot before. Large very open and spaced out building. Plenty of space to sit and be distanced if you want to be but also plenty of seating close if you want to have a group meet up. All the classic coffee drinks along with some daily specials. I had the sweet potato latte and was not disappointed. Also note that the cups are HUGE. I'm not sure if it's just the shape or if there was a lot of liquid...either way I didn't feel cheated on how much I got. Also tried a vegan gluten free chocolate chip muffin and a decaf vanilla latte since the littlest minion was with me and she doesn't do caffeine to the full extent yet. Most recently, I've tried their Espresso & Mango and Taste the Rainbow, both were delicious. They also have housemade syrups which make a tasty latte! The coffee scene has been booming in Hampton Roads but not all the new places we've seen popping up provide the quality and customer service that you'll find at Coalescence. I love the variety and adventure that can come with coffee but am often turned off by the snobbery that quickly follows when I try to learn more. The people at Coalescence are different. They're friendly. They answer questions and educate so you can feel good about what you're buying. (Pro tip: don't ask lots of questions when the line is long). They don't rush through your order or roll their eyes when you ask for cream. Overall they genuinely seem happy to be doing what they're doing and that spirit overflows into the atmosphere of this open and bright space. On top of all of that their product is actually good! Two years ago you wouldn't find me paying four bucks for black coffee but through the proper brewing process, the flavors stand out and make every sip worth the cents you spend.
