This is one of my favorite spots in Norfolk. I've been coming here since my college days at ODU and have stuck to pretty much the same order since then. The food is always consistently good, and the smoothie bowls are such a nice treat. I love to order either a breakfast bowl or a north pole bowl with the Fajita pita as a rice bowl. The fresh veggies paired with the hot rice and Lizano sauced chicken always feeds my craving. The staff is super chill as well as the atmosphere. Staff is wonderful! Matt and Britt up front are so sweet and Kitchen manager, Windsor, knows her stuff! We love this place. They rotate local artwork (that you can buy if you want) on the walls so there's always new things to look at. They have a couple of card games as well. Indoor and outdoor seating with a great little patio out back. The music there is always new and fun (staff makes playlists). The food is great! Poke bowls are good sizes and there is a lot of variety to make edits however you'd like.. Love their coffees and matcha tea too. The smoothies are good, but the orange creamsicle one always needs a bit more orange so keep that in mind when ordering :) There is also a Chesapeake and Virginia Beach location, however, I have never been to those. I was at Zeke's on Granby Street about 4 years ago when I just moved to Norfolk. That was then when I ordered a macchiato and they were struggling to make one right. Nothing much was on the menu. But wait, this is a great review of how Zeke's is so much different now especially what they offer. I ordered their cali poke bowl and Brazil bowl to go. While waiting for my order, I got to meet Rachel the hippie artist who happened to be at Zeke's to sell her paintings! It tells so much about Zeke's as an establishment that promotes other local businesses! Yay for Zeke's. Way cool. Went home and tried the bowls. Didn't intend to but scraped the bottom of great food. Always a pleasure to have breakfast at Zekes! If you're craving something healthy and local, I'd highly recommend. They are best known for their açaí bowls and poke - I love both! We normally get the brazil bowl, which includes an açaí smoothie base, granola, bananas, mango, kiwi, and a honey drizzle. I also love to get their cali poke, which is ahi tuna with all the good fixing's: seaweed salad, avocado, and spicy crab. They get pretty busy most weekends and their lobby is small but totally worth it bc their service is always A1 and their food is great. I have been a regular customer of Zeke's since they opened in Norfolk in 2015. I used to live across the street but now live 30 minutes from there- I now drive to satisfy my cravings for my favorite menu item: the Cali Tuna Pita. Y'all. The tuna salad is amazing. It is the best seasoned tuna I've ever had. The combo of ingredients is stellar. I dream about this pita! The service is always incredibly friendly especially from Brit and Brittany! The staff here really cares about hospitality. It does not go unnoticed! The music is generally chosen by who is working and I've never heard a bad playlist. It varies from old school hip hop to indie to jazz. The decor has changed over the years but is always quirky and unique. They continue to showcase local artists since the beginning, changing artists every month. Zeke's has become a staple in the Norfolk community and my life! Came to this location on the fourth of July weekend for the first time and the server/barista couldn't be less amused to be working (not that I blame her). However, I was! I'd been craving a good acai and was waiting for a bowl that had all my mix-ins, including granola, which should be the standard but doesn't seem to be at all places these days. Love the shirts but wish there was less skeletons. I'm probably more partial to the VB location more, but if I lived in the area, any Zekes would be tempting. Not *really* açaí bowls- their açaí base is pre-blended with bananas, and the taste shows. I get that this is done to save money ($açaí greater than $bananas) but it takes away from the bold flavor of the berry. I absolutely adored the decor from the second I walked in- cozy, antique, nature-y with plants, and hip. The server Matt behind the counter was also surfer-dude-lives-life-backpacking type of cool, and was kind enough to give me a sample of the açaí blend before I ordered. I honestly didn't like the flavor that much, but I was really in the mood for fruits, so I figured my toppings of blueberry, mango, and kiwi would quench that thirst, regardless. Unfortunately, it was probably only the equivalent of half a kiwi, Brunoise'd mangoes (aka super tiny) and a couple bluebs. Also, the granola isn't gluten-free, and there was no substitute, so that kind of stunk texture-wise. This place has a pretty expansive menu. I was torn between a couple things, the gentleman behind the counter suggested a bowl. I ordered the Brazil with strawberries. It was very good, the granola is a crushed bar similar to if not nature valley, as opposed to sprinkled granola. The açaí (underneath) had a much more earthy taste than that of a smoothie. Decorated in 80's themed memorabilia (Star Wars, tech, home interiors, video games) and bright contemporary art work. $27 for 2 wraps + 2 smoothies is a tad pricey, especially since our wraps were lackluster; da taso (greek) was ok but my tuna melt tasted like they put shredded/processed tuna (from a can?) on the open face grill. That said, the peanut butter banana honey smoothie was EXCELLENT. Sadly, their greenia colada tasted like a Christmas tree yankee candle smells. Our ears feasted on LOUD groove/hip hop selections (Tribe called quest, Fugees, etc). My wife thought her headache was from her smoothie but later relented it was from the tunes' volume. It's hard to find superb acai mix anywhere in Norfolk but Zeke's hits as close as I've found thus far... The atmosphere is great for quiet studying or sharing a quick bite with some friends along with the shelf of games to play while you eat or while you wait I had two small breakfast acai bowls for my first visit and waited around 15minutes for them with 3 other people in front of me in line. The small size was filling enough to hold me over between a late breakfast and dinner and considering that acai base isn't the best I've had, I likely wouldn't have finished a large size anyway. My oldest daughter and I both love this place. This is the BEST poke bowl in town. Between the two of us we have had them all. My favorite is the spicy and her's is the OG but they are all great. On our last visit I finally had one of their cocktails. A mojito which was wonderful. I can't speak to the rest of the menu but I can say if you want poke this is the place to go. Great smoothies, decent poke, and good vibes - but this place is way too overpriced. I love poke, but I'm not interested in spending over $30 for poke and a smoothie. A large poke should cost $15, tops. The cost here is insane, and not worth it. It's not worth it because 1) no matter what that's overpriced and 2) the rice is not good. The rice here is not your Japanese sticky rice, or if if is it was made way too far in advance and is far too undercooked to tell. Instead of sticky, it's dry and hard. The fish itself is good, fresh, and flavorful. Delicious, albeit expensive. Finally, I love the vibe here. The music they play is awesome and the staff is friendly. Unfortunately, the seats are pretty dirty, but it's still a good spot to hang out at. All in all, this place would be worth if it wasn't so overpriced. read more

This updated review is long overdue. My original review was written and posted four years ago in May of 2015. An uptick to my rating is in order as well. There are too many dishes here that have been consistently blowing me away to a state of bliss, more so now than ever before. Located in the NEON (New Energy Of Norfolk) district of Granby Street, Zeke's remains as one of my favorite lunch spots. I especially enjoy coming here after exercising at the nearby Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA. The decor resonates with the artistic vibe of the NEON district. A wide variety of whimsical odds and ends from a bygone era are artfully displayed. The walls are adorned with a number of celebrity paintings and other artwork from local artists, usually available for sale. You place your order at the counter and then wait at your seat until it is delivered. It is fun to walk around and enjoy the decor and scenery as you wait. One of the windows at the dining counter overlooks The Plot, a community gathering space that is a cultural centerpiece of the NEON district. One new feature that has emerged since my original review is The Garden, a picturesque outdoor patio dining area in the rear of the building. There is a self-serve dispenser of free ice cold cucumber water available, full of fresh cucumber slices inside. I usually fill up my glass before my order arrives. My favorite dishes are listed and described as follows: KALE SALAD: Kale, Avocado, Pickled Ginger, Carrot, Green Onions, Sesame Oil, Sesame Seeds, Shoyu, Almonds, and Raisins over Brown Rice. Nutritious and delicious, I can always feel my body thanking me after ordering this dish. When it comes to kale salad, this is honestly the best I've ever tasted. My Rating: 5 Stars. SPICY POKE BOWL: Hawaiian Style Sushi Grade Raw Tuna, Seaweed Salad, Shoyu, Sesame Oil, Sesame Seeds, Green Onions, Sriracha, Crushed Red Pepper Wasabi, and Cucumber over Brown Rice. You can order any of their Poke bowls with regular white rice as well, but brown rice is always my preference at a small extra charge. This is my personal favorite of their Poke bowls. The ingredients combine exquisitely for a profoundly delicious taste experience. The spicy tuna packs a nice level of heat. Sriracha bottles are available if you want even more. My Rating: 5 Stars. SPICY POKE & KALE SALAD COMBO BOWL: Spicy Ahi Tuna, Kale, Cucumber, Carrot, Sesame Oil, Sesame Seeds, Pickled Ginger, Almonds, and Raisins over Brown Rice. This is combination of the two dishes described above. I get to enjoy the spicy tuna as well as the leafy green kale and other ingredients. Its flavors always leave my tongue tingling with pleasure. My Rating: 5 Stars. NORTH POLE BOWL: Blended Frozen Acai topped with Shredded Coconut, Blueberries, Mango, Granola, Almonds, and Honey. Chia seeds for extra texture and flavor can also be added at a small extra charge. This is my personal favorite of their regular menu Acai bowls. Its name was inspired by the coconut sprinkles that resemble a layer of snow. Refreshing and delicious, it delivers an especially nice cooling effect on a warm day. Just looking at it begins to cool me off. Their frozen acai works like magic. My Rating: 5 Stars. BUILD YOUR OWN ACAI BOWL: You can also hand pick your desired ingredients to customize your Acai bowls as well. My favorite combination so far includes a mix of Mango, Kiwi, Blueberries, Banana, Granola, and Honey over their blend of Frozen Acai. This one is every bit as refreshing and delicious as their North Pole Bowl. Once again, their frozen acai does the trick. My Rating: 5 Stars. SPICY TUNA PITA: Homemade Spicy Tuna, Seaweed Salad, and Sriracha Aioli. Recently enjoyed for the first time, this one comes in a foil wrap. It can be a bit messy to eat and look at when unwrapped. Yet its simple combination of ingredients packs a powerhouse of flavor. The spicy ground tuna pairs beautifully with the seaweed salad. I will definitely order this one again. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. THE IMPOSSIBLE BURGER: A Plant Based Vegan Friendly Burger in an Avocado Bun. Served over Kale, Tomato, Pickle, and Tomato with a Spicy Fajita Sauce on the side. This is their newest addition, one that has not yet been printed on their regular menu. This is the first time I have ever seen an avocado style burger bun served in this area. I enjoyed the flavors of this immensely and am rooting for it to make it on to their main menu. If I could tweak this one a bit, I would add just a little more kale to the mix. Although beautifully presented, I feel it can be better served in a wider bowl or a flat plate. This would help showcase the layers of the burger when taking a photo. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. When it comes to bowl dishes, and for my personal tastes, Zeke's has lately been blowing the local competition out of the water.
