I love the place and the concept! Who would have thought to combine poke and acai but but "bowls" half of the menu makes it really make sense and the "beans" half provide a chill coffee shop environment. I love the retro feel juxtaposed with very current food trends. I've been several times to do some work and enjoy some food, but I've also gotten food to go. It *is* a bit more expensive, in my opinion, than many poke alternatives as this dish has continued to grow in popularity (though I don't know of too many other Norfolk options), but tasty all the same. I've had a variety of menu offerings, but favorites include the Cali Pita, the Brazil Bowl (acai), Cali Poke and Spicy Poke. All the fruit drinks I've had are also great. They used to have a special that was a Pita and a smoothie combo for a discounted price, I think $10 or $11, and I wish they'd bring that back! So what is all the commotion around the PLOT today? For those that are not aware the former Norfolk Art District is now the Norfolk Neon District. Locals are preparing for a neon bash like the city has never seen before. Well actually this would be the first. Activity around the PLOT's Granby and Olney streets was not limited to workers hanging a new neon sign either. Lots of photogs were every where to capture murals being completed, the main sign attached and improvements to the PLOT. So with Zeke's being in the neon district and having it bookmarked for a few months I seized the moment. I have heard great word of mouth and was excited to check them out. The building itself is a reason to say...okay this place has a history from the turn of the century. Exterior is a two story brick painted pale blue. It fit in perfect to this eclectic neighborhood. Large glass windows provide plenty of visibility for foot traffic. When opening the door is was a bit like a time warp in an awesome way. Art for sale on a large wall, throw back items ranging from projectors to typewriters to a vintage 1950's Mattel Magic 8 Ball. A few tables in the center and counter by the register and one by the window for terrific people watching. But the creme de la creme a sweet corner booth with Betty Boop sitting on top of a vintage 1960's radio. A light colored warm wood laminate runs through out the dining room. Right there and then I decided this was NOT a place trying to exhibit a persona of coolness. They are indeed cool and I was a bit giddy about looking at the breakfast menu. I talked with the young friendly woman behind the counter about breakfast options. She whipped a huge menu that was intimidating. It ain't cheap folks, bowls run up to $14 for large. I already was excited about the availability of Three Ships Coffee and had her start my pour over while I decided. A recommendation of the PB&J bowl was made, but darn everything looked good. So what would the Magic 8 Ball say about if I would like this selection, we shall find out. With a shake of the ball the answer to my question..."It is certain". Could I deny this 1950's technology, I think not! I ordered up the large bowl too! A quick trip to the unisex restroom found it in perfect condition. Well geez, there are even two Bally video games if you need to wait. HELLO MS. Pacman, been a few years. I found a table in the center and enjoyed my Three Ships coffee in a monkey mug. There is something about drinking coffee out of a monkey mug that made it even more yum. The eating area was pristine and presented well to visiting customers this morning. I was still a bit in aw of the coolness factor of the place. A bit like a retro museum and I had to admit that was a turn on. At the coffee station where you can add sugar, creme etc I ran across a childhood memory. A small glass mug with a wooden handle from the 70's. We had the exact same mug when growing up that we got from the Smokey Mountains. An A/C unit just above needs a cleaning ASAP! So what's the hold up already, I'm hungry and it's been like 10 minutes. Well they used everyone of those minutes to create a work of art for me. So yes picture worthy, but the taste was yet to be determined. The first bite and I was hooked, this was not a normal breakfast bowl...OMG! The granola was so fresh with a great crunch, but I learned its made in house. Not only the granola, but the fruit, almonds, and everything else thrown in was so delicious. I worked my way down to find an ice cold chocolate banana smoothie used for the base. So creative with a smoothie at the bottom, I loved it. Flavors popped the entire time right down to the last bite. Impressed was an understatement. $14 worthy, you have to decide. Something to ponder is their large bowl is like two meals. The Magic Ball has never failed me in life and it sure did not fail me at Zeke's for breakfast. Maybe, just maybe the lyrics from the classic MC Hammer song were playing in my head as I exited the joint. Too Legit... to Legit to Quit is right! This should be on everyone's must try. The winning combination of Three Ships with an awesome bowl had me all chips in. Throw in the developing neon district around it and you have a winning combination. So, you're craving some poke but you live on the East Coast. What is a girl to do? Aside from make your own (cause ain't nobody got time for that), I'd suggest that you show up at Zekes! You will be greeted with a hilarious front man who is super sweet and willing to answer any of your questions. Food-wise this place was great! I've been to Hawaii quite a few times so nothing can really trump that, but for what we are given here on the East Coast I thought this was very comparable! I also think this is the only place around here doing poke bowls? Id say, if you've never been to Hawaii, or never had a poke bowl, then this place is a must try! Psh, even if you HAVE done one or both of the above, Id still recommend it! Who doesn't like raw fish over rice!? (There's obviously so much more to it than that, but that's just the Asian in me talking *wheres the fish sauce!?-ha*) They have a decent selection to choose from on their menu and they are happy to work with you if you want to change any ingredients around. I would have never known this spot was located at the now "Neon District" of Norfolk. This quaint little spot fits this area though. It's a nice spot to hang out with some friends. They have art work on the walls you can purchase. The prices I saw was from $20 to $75. It's Cool they support local artists. There were also books all round if you want to really chill and stay awhile while you eat. So now for the menu item... I ordered the North Pole bowl. It's basically a smoothie with fruits or nuts or granola etc., it was pretty yummy. I think that the bowl or the actual container it's in makes it hard to get down to the smoothie thats on the bottom without you needing to eat most of the topping first. Prompt, friendly service with okay poke. Finding parking in front of Zeke's was a breeze on a Sunday afternoon. After entering the store, I was promptly greeted and helped. I needed time to look over the menu and wasn't rushed. I decided on a small OG poke (which comes with 5oz of tuna compared to 9oz that comes with the large) with brown rice, which was $1.25 extra, and an iced Jasmine green tea. My food and beverage was ready in about 5 minutes, with my green tea poured into two cups since there was extra. The small poke was decent in size, but a little pricey IMO. For $10.25, the poke should have already came with rice instead of it being an add on item. I also thought that the OG poke was just okay. I felt the tuna needed to be marinated longer for the flavor to really come through. It was as if the tuna was just tossed in soy sauce/sesame oil. The cucumbers didn't add anything to the poke. They were just cucumbers and I could have done without them. I did enjoy my iced tea though and I'm glad the gentleman was kind enough to give me the extra tea instead of throwing it away or saving it for the next person. The decor of Zeke's was interesting, with a various artwork and items (such as a typewriter and microscope) scattered throughout. There was also a couple old school arcade games in the back where the restroom was. Would I come back to Zeke's for poke? Not a chance. The tuna was super fresh & the flavors all blended together wonderfully! The walls are adorned with new art pieces since my last visit & it looks pretty cool. The atmosphere is casual, with pieces from local artists covering the walls - on my last visit, the walls were covered in post-modern portraits of US Presidents covered in gangsta tattoos and Michelango's David taking a selfie of his penis. I really love the poke bowls and smoothie bowls at Zeke's. I always get the Cali poke bowl - it is my favorite one. Everything is made fresh when you order. While it's a small restaurant there is lots of seating and an outdoor garden that has seating as well. There is parking on the street as well. Because the poke bowls are a little pricey I don't eat here often. It's definitely a treat meal. To give an idea, the large poke bowl (I believe this is 8oz of tuna) with brown rice (extra $1.75) that I got today totaled $19 including taxes. What I Ordered: Haole bowl, southern loco moco, iced Americano coffee. The Food: I have all good things to say about the food. The eggs in the southern loco moco were cooked perfectly, and the sausage gravy with the runny yolk on the rice was heart warming. The Haole bowl was refreshing and not too sweet. I truely felt a high degree of attention was given to the food source and preparation. The Americano was comparable with Starbucks. The Experience: Located in the neon district, this place one of the most hipster restaurants I've visited in Norfolk. Complete with a millennium falcon model, chill misic, and genuinely happy workers, Zeke's is unique. You'll either love it or hate it. I like to drink my Americano slow, so I was not a fan of my gradually collapsing paper straw. The Cost: Hold on to your wallet. I paid ~$20 for my meal including tip. In my opinion, it's a bit on the expensive side for brunch. I would consider visiting about once a month because the quality is truely something to experience. Cali Poke bowl & Ginger Plum tea. I came here with my friend @mindskip before our "Kink with a Wink" performance to grab a bite to eat. I was having stomach issues so I wanted something light yet filling and this was perfect. The Ginger Plum tea was warm and tasty with the perfect hints of sweet and spiciness. The Cali Poke bowl, topped with FRESH tuna and crab was amazing, it was also topped with avocado, masago, green onion and cucumber. I swapped out the sriracha mayo for the O.G. Marinade on the side and added rice. The O.G. Marinade reminded me of a sweet soy sauce. I love Zeke's but definitely have to mentally prepare myself to spend a little when I visit. Came here for a clean post-workout meal, and I was pretty excited because I never had the chance to stop by Zeke's before! I heard so much about it and couldn't wait to get my hands on some fresh tuna poke bowls. The place is fairly small with super cute antique decorations and local, original art lining the walls. It is not a sit-down to order place which I personally liked since it would make it easier to get something to go! The menu offers acai bowls, poke bowls, make your own pitas, and smoothies. Everything is made with raw, organic ingredients and no substitutes. Beware though: these fresh ingredients make the purchase of a food item very very pricey. I almost fell over when I saw how much a large poke bowl went for! Don't be too alarmed though because I literally got 3 meals out of one large poke bowl for $14. So I decided to go with the Cali Poke-- tuna, crab meat, avocado, and seaweed salad in a spicy mayo sauce. If you like spicy, definitely go with this option because it is HOT ! Thankfully I had a delicious PB, honey, and soy milk smoothie to wash down the heat. The tuna is very fresh and I love the combo with the seaweed salad. This place is awesome! As soon as I walked in, I see an eclectic array of art. I love velvet art and they have it. A ouija board, dolly Parton, a box of Booty O's, stevie wonder...It was great. For the place to be as small as it is, they utilized the space perfectly. The menu is complementary to all. The food is unique and tasty. They have complimentary cucumber water, which is my fave. Road trip for the day to the beach brought us here for a pre beach lunch. Parking was found....area was interesting with building murals and urban artzzz... I took a step inside and whoa....I was transported back to my childhood! I grew up in the 70s and this place was outfitted in 70s decor. Black velvet paintings, photos of Elvis, Formica table tops, even some big-eye art! And of course a rotary phone! Ordered the poke bowl with sriracha sauce....I took a chopstick full--nice tang, the sriracha does its best not to overpower the dish ...great bite sized cubes....lovely brown rice --however the ratio of rice to poke needs a re-do. Too much brown rice as in brown rice domination--a 50/50 ratio or even 75 poke to 25 rice ratio would have been optimal. Ordered a green smoothie. I was reluctant to order this as green smoothies can either be sickly sweet with sugar or Uber bitter with greens. However.....this smoothie had a natural taste--a nice tang from the greens, bitterness was non existent....and it was a healthy smoothie--not a shamrock shake sugar wannabe! The service was good --some 70s playlist would have enhanced the vibe ...however the bathroom was super surprising! A 70s darkroom concept--brought back memories of me hanging photos on a line to dry in photography class at school after putting it through vinegar-smelling developer solution.... 70s era meets 21st century health food=a good place to eat! Oohh Myy... I've been wanting to come here for FOREVER. I kept telling myself that I'd go whenever I'd be heading to Southside, but I just never did. The building that Zeke's is located, is pretty vacant..though there is a smokeshop next door and a worker (I think) was doing some chalk art. The interior is a whole lot smaller than I imagined. Also pretty full of art on the walls, general things taking up counter/table space. Knick-knacks here and there..essentially..hipster. Counter space along the front windows and some bar seating, a few tables. I did notice some clunky typewriters taking up space on the window counters, not sure if they're even usable..but less space for patrons to sit. I was worried we wouldn't be able to sit, until my bf wandered out back and said we should sit out there. The back seating area had more seats and tables. The gate leading towards the street is nicely covered over with viney plants for privacy. I ended up ordering the small spicy poke with white rice and a coffee nut frappe. My bf got the greek pita with blueberry + mango smoothie. I LOVED the spicy poke! There was a lot of tuna chunks (though a bit small for my liking), and it was SPICY. I love spicy foods and can handle them well, but I was pleasantly surprised at how spicy these were (I also liked that they give avocado slices). The only thing I didn't like was the rice..I'm not sure how they cooked it but it was hard..my bf's pita was also very good.
