After eating lunch on Saturday, Sophia and I came here for some treats. Tealux Cafe is one place we've always liked for boba tea, but it has been years since our last visit. It's not easy when you live on the other side of Hampton Roads, but I'm glad to see them do really well over the years. Let's see how they've been. We were greeted by the staff after walking in and foot traffic was minimal. Music was playing througout the building and they were pretty busy with orders. A few people did come in but for the most part, they did takeout. We decided to sit and sip our chosen desserts. I chose their Strawberry Smoothie with strawberry popping boba at 70% sugar and Sophia chose her usual, coconut smoothie at 70% sugar with tapioca. Both of us enjoyed them very much. The young lady working was by herself and overwhelmed. She announced to the patrons inside that she was going as fast as she could, but both of her sinks were broken and that was slowing her down. This is certainly a food safety concern. I asked if I could cancel my order since we were in a rush, and she said she was unable to cancel any orders and do a refund because she didn't have manager privileges so, she did our order next. When my kids started drinking their drinks (after we had walked out of the store and were down the street) there were large pieces of orange plastic inside the drinks. I really like Tealux and have consistently gotten good drinks (milk teas and fruit teas) in the past, but this time did not hit. I got two fruit teas (Luna & Heartbreaker) and both were really bitter. The bitterness overwhelmed the fruit flavors and made it unenjoyable to drink. I've had their fruit teas before and I've never had an experience like this. I really like tealux and I don't want to end this review on a bad note! Tealux's second location is a hit! Great location, conveniently in the heart of Ghent. The first location has the advantage of an easy parking lot, but side street parking in Ghent is plentiful most hours of the day, so it's not that big of a deal. Inside, there's a few tables and some high seats along the window. Menu is mostly drinks, with a few food items. I think the other location has a bigger food menu. I really like their Red Roast Pork Banh Mi and last I remember, the new location in Ghent doesn't have it. But the new location DOES have their tofu dessert which I LOVE. For the uninitiated, tofu dessert is well known in most Asian countries, including China, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, and a few others. Of course, each country has their own variants, like Southern China's version is mostly sweet, served with a sweet ginger-based syrup, tapioca and sometimes sesame paste. It is a very refreshing dessert with good health benefits. This is also the version served at Tealux. My first time having this dessert was at the first Tealux location. It was served with ginger syrup and tapioca and was served in a bowl. However, when I had it about a week ago at the Ghent location, it was served in a plastic cup, which is definitely not Instagram-worthy...lol Before we eat food, we use our other senses like vision and smell, and serving it in a plastic cup is definitely not visually appealing. So, if y'all are keeping the item on the menu, I hope y'all change up the serving vessel. Overall, I'm definitely glad there's another Tealux! TeaLux is a beautiful, cozy place to enjoy great food and refreshing drinks. Julian greeted me with a welcoming smile and explained the menu items to me and gave me great options for my order. I decided on the Sunset Paradise drink and a Special Combination sandwich. The Sunset Paradise was so sweet and yummy that I smiled while sipping on my tea. The bits of fruit floating in my drink were so tasty that I used a fork to scoop them out when I finished drinking. The special combination sandwich was full of incredible flavors. The sauce melded the two meat combo into a scrumptious treat. I was so full. Yes!! I ordered one to go for my son, Mom points! You will love the outstanding service, coloring, and playing cute games on the bar while your TeaLux treats fill your tummy! People-watching is another plus while at TeaLux in Ghent. Fantastic!! The family and I participated in the Yelp $7.57 deal Tealux is doing with Yelp. So we got two drinks for $7.57. It was our first time trying Tealux. We we all able to order whatever our little hearts desired. Our drinks were made pretty quick, but the attention to detail did not lack. As I say along with many others... they were all Instagram worthy! We ordered Heart on Fire, Aphrodite, and the canary. My husband got a milk tea. Everyone drank them pretty fast and had no complaints. The interior is so cute and clean. Customer service was great as well. I recently was gifted an experience with Yelp, but I came back a few days later on my own dime because I was craving it again! When I went in, there were two gentlemen working this time. I asked for the same exact drink that I ordered a few days prior (a matcha boba tea with limited sugar), but the guy at the register was very adamant about not being able to do that. I told him the other ladies who did my order a few days prior, put less amount of brown sugar syrup, and so he did that. It was good, just not as good as the day before. I love that Tealux is expanding. I'm partial, though, to the original Tidewater Dr location because it's so close to home. Their Ghent location is awesome, too, because it's not far from AW Shucks, a restaurant I frequent a LOT. I can come through after/before Shucks & pick up a tea and/or smoothie (I almost always buy one of the 2). The only issue I have is the parking. Tealux can't help that, but I hate looking for parking on Colley. Oh well, there's always Tidewater Dr, haha. And hopefully Ghent's Tealux will be fully staffed. During my initial visit, there was only one person working (I believe this was still during their soft opening, though), and he told me he worked alone the entire day (I stopped by Sunday evening, 8/28/22). What's worse, while he was making my tea, he slipped and fell hard on his back. He got up, I asked if he was okay and was ready to call 911, but he said he was good to go. I hit him off with a decent tip because I felt bad and I've seen him rock it out before over at the Tidewater spot. I hope Tealux rocks it out in Ghent because I love their drinks and their people! One of the most unique boba shops I have visited. Along with boba tea, smoothies, milkshakes, and food items - such as sandwiches are offered. It is a small shop, but the decor is very trendy and there is still plenty of seating, a restroom, and outlets where you can charge up. Hip music plays on the radio. Toys and games are offered to occupy your time and brain while you wait. Service is kind and helpful. I was assisted with signing up for rewards, and I get lots of offers via text from them. We tried the chicken banh mi, Thai Tea, Cookies and Cream smoothie (just like a milkshake, I imagine the taro is the same). The bread on the banh mi is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was very good, full of fresh vegetables and tender meat. My brother loved his thai tea, and my sister and I really enjoyed the Cookies and Cream smoothie. I had to myself the Islander, mentioned in my Yelp Elite Week review. I can't wait to come back!! I stopped here on a Sunday afternoon, and was the only patron in the restaurant. It was very chill with pop music and I was greeted when I entered the area. I ordered a Thai tea with oat milk and 50% sugar. Now I will take the blame for the taste because I assumed the oat milk would have been sweetened but it was not. I'm a huge fan of boba, so I was really excited to see this spot open up walking distance from me! It replaced the short-lived Colley Cafe and is Tealux's second location in Norfolk. I stopped in twice shortly after they opened (soft launch, before they started serving food) and enjoyed a delicious strawberry milk tea with tapioca instead of jelly both times. In my visits since, I've had varying experiences. My fiancé surprised me with a Thai milk tea recently, which had very little tapioca in it. I've also gotten the Meadow fruit tea with tapioca and it was very good since I asked for much less sugar, but it took a while for them to make it with no one else at the store. One thing to note on the sugar level: if you're not familiar with bubble tea drinks, it's common and traditional for there to be a brown sugary syrup either around the drink or with the tapioca pearls. This makes the drink sweeter even if you ask for less sugar in the tea! So be sure you're clear on the overall sweetness level you want when you order. My biggest complaint is the prices. I just think they're generally much higher than other bubble tea shops and not justifiably when you pay for tapioca separately and don't receive a sufficient amount. Still, I'm sure my cravings will get the best of me and I'll still come back with some regularity over time. read more

The new Ghent location of Tealux Cafe launched its soft opening in August of this year. Their first and original location opened in Norfolk on Tidewater Drive in June of last of year. The Ghent location is stationed next door to The Colley Cantina at the former site of The Colley Cafe and Tapas Bar. Before that, it was a Starbucks. The outdoor patio is still available at this spot. As a resident of Ghent, I am able to walk there in fifteen minutes. Both locations are Vietnamese style cafes that specialize in fresh fruit teas and milk teas with boba and other toppings, smoothies, and Vietnamese coffees. Boba teas first originated in Taiwan, where it became a major obsession before spreading abroad. Today the U.S. is dotted with a number of boba tea specialty shops and chains. The original Tidewater Drive location offers Bahn Mi sandwiches, Vietnamese street foods, and tofu desserts. These food items are reportedly also coming to the Ghent location at the beginning of the new year. Both locations are owned by Tina Dang, a warm and friendly Vietnamese woman who pours an abundance of love, pride, and passion into her creations. Tealux Cafe also has expansion plans in place with sights set for locations in Virginia Beach and Falls Church. Other locations are being considered for as far away as Missouri and California. Two additional locations are reportedly already open in Whitewater, Wisconsin, and Tampa, Florida. Norfolk can be proud to say that their Tidewater Drive location was their first. Tealux Cafe is the first place where I really learned to like boba teas. Before Tealux Cafe came along, I had tried boba teas at a few other places, but I could never seem to fully taste their hype. The boba teas at Tealux Cafe were a game changer, and they have now become my newest addiction. My original plan was to wait and review the new Ghent location after the food items at the Ghent location became available, in order to provide a more complete review. My mind was changed when the Yelp 757 Deal for the Ghent location became available for the month of November, which offered two drinks plus one topping for the price of one at the cost of $7.57. I could no longer resist. One thing I love about the tea drinks at Tealux Cafe are the dome shaped lids, which allow me to poke my straw through a pre-made hole with greater ease. I like being able to remove the plastic lid and stir the ingredients around at will. I also find their presentations more attractive than those with the more traditional and tightly sealed paper or plastic flat lids. I have enjoyed the following Fruit Teas so far, each one at their full level of sweetness, a low level of ice, and Magic Boba, which are chewy transparent tapioca pearls that settle at the bottom. The low ice level allows me slurp up the tapioca pearls through my straw more quickly and easily. HEART ON FIRE: Jasmine Tea with Strawberry, Dragon Fruit, and an Orange Slice. This is my number one favorite and always gives me an incredibly refreshing and delicious flavor explosion. Bits of strawberry and dragon fruit settle to the bottom at the end, and I love to slurp up every remaining bite and devour the orange slice as well. My Rating: 5-Plus Stars. THE ISLANDER: Jasmine Tea with Passion Fruit, Mango, Pineapple, and an Orange Slice. This one has emerged as my close second place favorite. The flavors of the ingredients provide a blissful taste experience. Once again I love to devour the bits of fruit that settle to the bottom at the end. My Rating: 5 Stars. I enjoyed both the Heart On Fire and The Islander together in one sitting for my Yelp 757 Deal. LUNA FRUIT TEA: Jasmine Tea with Lychee, Butterfly Pea, and an Orange Slice. Butterfly Pea is a blue tea that is derived from a plant that is common to most South East Asian Countries. The Butterfly Pea tea sparkled with an attractive blue hue and delivered a unique floral taste that combined beautifully with the Lychee and other ingredients. My Rating: 5 Stars. SUNSET PARADISE: This is another delicious and refreshing blend, one that combines the flavors of Jasmine Tea, Strawberry, Mango, and Orange. My Rating: 5 Stars. I have also enjoyed the following Milk Teas, each one of which is prepared with a stronger blend of tea, milk, sugar, ice, black tapioca pearls, and their respective flavorings. TEALUX SIGNATURE MILK TEA MATCHA MILK TEA TARO MILK TEA The unique and distinctive flavors of each one came through with flying colors. These are what I order when I want a greater caffeine rush. My Rating: 5 Stars for each one. I will follow up with an updated review next year when their food items become available. As a regular at the Ghent location, I will be trying a few more of their teas and toppings as well during my upcoming visits. Leaning more towards 4.5 stars, but always a good time at the Ghent Tealux! I've been here a few times, with the last time being their grand opening. They had drink specials and they finally started offering food options (already offered at the Tidewater location). I tried out the combo banh mi which held up nice and hot on my trip back home through the tunnel. The sandwich was delicious and so filling for lunch. I'm glad I didn't overdo it and grab a side even though I wanted to! The drinks are fun and as someone who can't do a lot of caffeine all the time, it's nice to have so many fruit tea options! The staff are always super sweet and I think they handled the grand opening very well considering the amount of people that had come through and the expanded menu. I love popping in here when I'm in Ghent to get my boba tea fix. I try out a new drink every time I come here and plan to keep doing so! The space is decorated with fun, bright colors, and it's nice to people watch from the outdoor seating. Came here after our Valentine's dinner for something sweet. I've been into strawberry milk teas lately and I had to get theirs, along with cheese cream! Hubby got their oreo smoothie and he wasn't much of a fan. We saw that they were drowning his drink in the Hersey's chocolate syrup so it tasted just that + they forgot his boba but we didnt bother going back for it, which was fine. I personally liked my drink though, I wouldn't recommend their oreo smoothie unless you like drinking the chocolate syrup but we will definitely come back and try something else on their menu! read more

I was walking down Colley when I saw this new bubble tea place across the street having a soft opening- you best believe I walked in and got some!! I ordered the jasmine milk tea and oat brown sugar tea. The jasmine was delicious! I could even taste a hint of the jasmine. The brown sugar one was also yummy. Whichever drink you select, they allow you to pick your sweetness level and ice level. I always appreciate that as someone who doesn't like super sweet drinks. The prices were also great ($4.50 for each drink), but I think that was the soft opening special because the menu prices are listed around $6.50. The indoor area has cute booth and window seating and the outdoor patio is also a vibe to drink and hang with friends. 3.5 stars, but rounding up to 4 stars. I've come back two times after such a great experience with the Yelp Elite Event. It's such a cute space to hang out and every single drink I've had is amazing! My current favorites are the TeaLux signature milk tea, the taro smoothie with coconut lychee jelly with cake or cheese foam, and the Luna. They have a small menu to include things like banh mi and popcorn chicken. I've had the combo and chicken bahn mi- the only thing I didn't like was the pate, but that's because I don't like liver spread. Otherwise, the bread was toasted to perfection and the vegetables were very fresh and crunchy. I loved the popcorn chicken, but noticed the serving sizes aren't always the same. The food also takes a little longer to make. The one other thing I've noticed is that when there are multiple people with orders, there is no system to prioritize who ordered first. All of the drinks are placed right behind the counter and picked in the order it's placed on the counter, which isn't in order of arrival. There have also been two instances where the drinks didn't match the labels - one of them was a friend that was waiting for awhile and the other was in my Door Dash order. It's cute, cool music, nice vibe. Customer service, outstanding. We opted to sit inside at the window bar seating to take in the view. My husband ordered the special combination banh mi sandwich - spicy, and matcha milk tea, I ordered the special combination banh mi sandwich - spicy as well and the strawberry smoothie. I don't drink anything with matcha, but I did taste it so I could tell you all it was absolutely delicious. Nice, taste, not too creamy, but just delicious. The strawberry smoothie is made with real strawberries, not too sweet, but just right. Frozen strawberries at the bottom was a nice treat. Our sandwiches took about 20 mins, not sure why, but the young man that made them, did apologize. No problem, because it was worth the wait. The Vietnamese sandwich was awesome. Different but all the same delicious. The sandwich has Pate, Char Siu, Pork Roll, Pork Floss, I looked it up. It had different vegetables on it and it was really good. If you like different, and opened to trying something different, go check Tealux out in Norfolk in the Ghent area.
