This place hits the spot, and thank god it's not right down the street from me :) I got my usual - Cali Poke tuna bowl over white rice and a strawberry/mango/honey smoothie (I personally need this because I love the heat in the tuna, but I need the coolness to help w/ the heat). Tuna is SO fresh and delicious. Yes, it's pricey, but you get what you pay for and I'd much rather pay more to get fresh fish. It might be me, but the actual building has an odd smell to it. Street parking only, but usually not an issue. Art on the walls is usually locally and for sale. Go for the tuna! read more

Do not believe posted hours - this place puts the "casual" in casual dining - as in casual work ethic. Been three times in the last two weeks during posted hours - got one meal. Went today at 4 pm and the place was dark. Big joke in our house is the Zekes trip and whether it will yield a meal. We now go over closer to lunch for our dinner to make sure we can scores a meal. I ordered 2 OG Poke Bowls: one w seaweed salad and the other w white rice and avocado. Keep in mind, those additions are called "Add-ons" on the menu. Meaning, all of the primary ingredients should remain the same and then you PAY EXTRA for the added ingredients. I spent $3 total for the rice and avocado for the one bowl. I picked up the bagged up containers and rushed home for dinner. Once I opened the bag, I was instantly pissed Bc the one bowl was half white rice, barely any tuna, a couple cucumbers and plenty of avocado on top. Both still came in the small containers, so in comparison to the other bowl, the tuna was less than half that the other bowl had. Common sense says that if the base ingredients were of the same serving size, then they should have used the next size larger bowl to accommodate the add-ons. Simple logic. There's no mathematical way you could fit the extra ingredients in the same size container. So, $28.50 later....I get one half rice filled container and jipped on the tuna. Cool. read more

Two hour parking spots all around and everyone knows when you're talking about a restaurant in any "Downtown USA" that's basically the difference between trying them out or not! So now that we've gotten passed that, the food is outstanding, the atmosphere is laid back, and cool without trying too hard. It's the kind of place you bring a person for a meal and they immediately think you're cooler than they originally thought. Window seating, small tables, wifi, all in a small casual dine in area. And it's clearly a pillar in the community, as I witnessed the man at the front counter(who was very personable and nice) greet everyone that came in after me by their first name and knew their typical orders! (Always a good sign ) I asked the typical 1st timer question, "if I could ONLY get ONE thing what should it be?" And he gave the typical response "it's ALL good you can't go wrong." BUT he added to that with a rundown of WHY I can't go wrong; and now having eaten I believe him and plan to be back to try everything from breakfast to dinner and all the Artisan coffees as well. To be honest if I didn't have to be across the street for a barber appointment, I would've sat there and ate more...much much more. And now the food. I had the sweet and spicy poke bowl with brown rice and a fresh brewed iced hibiscus ginger tea. The tuna in the poke was fresh and delicious, there was the perfect balance of heat and sweet, the sewers was delicious and the pineapple was fresh. And they knew how to prepare brown rice so that it comes out moist and not like bird food. The hibiscus ginger tea was light, subtle flavored and very refreshing. All in all I'm on Granby often and I don't see myself eating many other places over this one going forward. read more

Giving five stars because I love finding a place like this in Norfolk. It restores my faith in hippies, humanity, and happiness. 1) Delicious authentic Poke. I cannot say more. If you know poke, you will love it. If you don't your live is less complete. Think Hawaiian style sushi/ceviche. Amazing! 2) Local goods. I really love buying local. Corporations get enough of my tax dollars from corrupt politicians. They shouldn't get my economic approval. I've been to Zeke's a couple of times and every time I've been, it's been bomb. The location of this place is great and a little more convenient than driving down to the oceanfront. The decor inside is cool and eclectic and features local artists. On my last trip here, I even saw the artwork of an acquaintance on the wall, which was pretty cool. There's a good amount of seating and a patio in the back for nice days. If you sit at the counter, you get a really lovely view of some of the murals in the Arts District and the Plot. I've tried the O.G. Poke, the Cali Poke, and the Spicy Poke (my favorite). Every time I've ordered the poke bowls, the fish has been super fresh and all the flavors worked so well. There's the option of adding rice which I usually do to make it more of a meal. I've also tried the PB&J acai bowl which worked well as a breakfast item but really could be eaten any time of the day. It was really fresh and all of the ingredients worked together well. I still want to try the other fruit bowls and the pitas so I'll have to keep making trips back! read more

This is coming from a girl who used to hate vegetables growing up. The pita was hot and fresh, and I freaking loved it. It's just freshness in your mouth. I paired my super soft & warm pita with ice-cold watermelon juice, and drinking that was like drinking watermelon without chunks. There are a couple seats inside with cute hipster decor. The tun was super fresh and went well with the ingredients inside (roe, cucumber). I didn't like the way the avocado was served with the bowls (slapped on top). I would have liked it cut up small so I could enjoy it with the entree. I just gnawed a bit off a slice and quickly shoveled some tuna in my mouth. I was hugely disappointed in the beans side of this place. I ordered an iced coffee and was shocked that it was FIVE dollars for a TINY cup! The serving was like a "tall" (the small) at Starbucks. I couldn't even enjoy the coffee since the soy milk used was so nasty looking. I thought it looked funny when I first got it, then it started to settle... and separate... it was gross. I asked the barista to make me another one. They just showed me that the soy milk was not expired and helped me by swirling my cup some to mix it back in. I didn't want that, so I threw it out. They did make me another... BUT USED THE SAME NASTY MILK! I just left with my friend and threw it out. UGH! There were also gnats on a going-rotten mini-pumpkin by the cutlery and water. Craving poke? Zeke's the place to go! This location is just off of Granby street in Norfolk, so you get the coffee shop type vibe. The mood is a bit "darker" than their oceanfront location, but nothing wrong with that! As far as food goes, it's pretty solid. We only had the large tuna and cucumber bowl to keep it simple and it was delicious from beginning to end - also, pretty big portion, so not complaining there. I've never been to Hawaii but I'm naively assuming the poke bowls at Zeke's are what they should be...? Either way - delicious! I can't finish off the review without mentioning the restroom though... that restroom is a MUST!! All I could think of as soon as I walked in, and the more I paid attention to every little detail is that, if growing up, the game Bloody Mary were ever to work, it would be in this restroom - no doubt! Since I work several blocks from this tiny little district on Granby Street, I've made this a frequent lunch stop since the "outside the bun" fare is predominant. For a type 2 diabetic, avoiding carbohydrates is key to a good diet. This place has the food I need to control blood sugar levels. The Spicy Tuna Pita is my item of choice. The portion of the Tuna, sushi grade seared and shredded, sriracha spiced, with seaweed salad on a pita, served hot is consistently delicious, some days are spicier. If you haven't had them before, they are essentially an acai-based smoothie bowl topped with other fruits, granola, and honey. I've tried their pitaya bowl as well and it's just as good. Comes in small or large (the large bowl can be a meal). They also have poke bowls (I heard great things about it). If I am craving something savory I go for the Greek pita sandwich. The pita is so soft and they really stuff their sandwich. Quirky, hipster vibe to this place. Board games and record player in the back. The prices are reasonable too in terms of Ghent standards. I hadn't intended on eating at Zeke's. After doing my pre-business trip research, I walked to The Parlor on Granby to dispense with my per diem. After the mile long trek from my hotel, I discovered it was inexplicably closed for lunch. I scratched my head for a moment and asked a gentleman who was painting the exterior of a nearby building what I should do now. He pointed me up the road to Zeke's. He said his fiance loves the place. Though he was a stranger, I can declare his wife-to-be has good taste in restaurants. Nestled inside the Neon District, a resurgent artsy neighborhood, Zeke's has cool cache in spades. The decor is warm in a Portland sort of way. The music overhead is new and obscure. The typewriter in the corner begs for your pithy observations. There's a lot of flannel and top-buttons buttoned in the room. I surveyed the lunch menu and gravitated towards the section with a funny name. I've never had poke (prounced poh-kay for those, like me, not in the know) before. When I asked the barista/hostess/waitress about it, she gave me a friendly answer rather than shame me as a snootier Millennial might. I ordered the spicy poke over a bed a seaweed. I paid the somewhat high, but understandably so, price and received my bowl swiftly. When you're serving raw hunks of meat, there's little room for error. You can't hide poor quality with sauces and toppings.Zeke's let their seafood shine. The tuna's texture was remarkable. The seaweed wasn't slimy as it often is. The wasabi bits added much needed crunch to the otherwise soft meal. They were kidding about the spiciness, either. All told, it was a lovely, flavorful experience. Alas, I'll likely never have poke again because no where in my hometown serves it. I owe Zeke's a debt of gratitude for expanding my horizons as well as my stomach. (Note: their portions are not American. They are reasonable. Smalls are not likely to fill a grown man's tummy. Larges are not going to force you to loosen your belt when you're finished.) read more

When I see Beans and Bowls, I think of Mexican cuisine, divey, easy to make standards. But it's not divey and it's not Mexican, more like Hawaiian. The interior feels new but thoughtfully designed, (appeals to my artsy sensibility) might be categorized as hipster because of the old typewriters decorating the window counter. Zekes beans and bowls never does me wrong! I initially tried them while I was homesick and missing açaí bowls that I would down on the streets of rio to refresh from the heat. I drove on over one day and was hesitant. Most açaí joints I've been to (which aren't many because they're limited both here and northern Virginia) would water down the açaí to the point where it was unrecognizable. It was recognizable here and I enjoyed it! The pricing, from what I recall, was decent and I'll definitely be back to try their savory bowls. I'm intrigued! I've been in here quite a few times. The service is great! There is a staff member that works there who's always super friendly. He treats you as if you're a regular customer. He's really great at making recommendations to your order. I like it when staff members know what's the best way to experience the food or beverages of a place. That is what makes a place great. Cali Poke Bowl: I absolute love the poke bowls. I haven't had anything better around the area. It's so fresh and flavorful. Watermelon Juice: If you are looking for a nice refreshing drink, this is my go-to. Never knew this existed until my friend highly recommended it to me. North Pole Acai Bowl: It's a great breakfast bowl. The fruit and granola is just delicious. Once I take a bite, I can't stop. I can see myself working a day there and eating both breakfast and lunch. The food here is great with lots of veggie options for vegans and vegetarians. I wish they had decaf espresso for days when I just want the taste but not the zing. But as far as the regular stuff they have, it must be something special because the coffee here is amazing. My favorite is the cinnamon honey latte made with almond milk. Okay here goes my first ever review. First impression: Cute decor, friendly and helpful person at the register. Beautiful looking dish with a good amount of food. So I've been meaning to come here ever since I moved to Portsmouth about a month and a half ago and finally decided today was the day. The location is nice and the restaurant itself is spacious and decorated with vintage comic posters amongst a variety of other things. There are large windows at the front at each side of the door with a bar to sit and enjoy your meal if you like people watching as well. It was my first time trying poke, so even though I had an idea of what I wanted after viewing the menu here on Yelp, I wasn't entirely sure. I asked the lady behind the register some questions since I was bouncing between the spicy poke bowl and the sweet and spicy. I ended up going with the sweet and spicy with white rice (brown wasn't available) just because I wanted something that wasn't overly spicy. I also ordered the Brazil acaï bowl and and a strawberry, pear, mint juice. I ordered the poke bowl in a large and the acaï bowl in a small because I was really hungry and wanted to make sure I was fully sated at the end of my meal. I honestly feel like I could've gotten a small in both because I didn't finish either dish(mostly because of time constraints but my appetite was satisfied by the end of my break). The sweet and spicy bowl came with a ton of tasty tuna mixed with pineapple, seaweed salad and spices. The remaining 1/3 of the bowl was filled with rice. Everything was well seasoned and the fruit helped provide some relief from the spice which made for a delicious and well balanced dish. I ended up only eating about half because I was running low on time and still wanted to taste the acaï bowl. The acaï bowl was amazing. I honestly couldn't stop eating it lol and if I'd had the time, I would've probably eaten the whole thing. The fresh fruits were cut and placed atop granola and what I believe was an acaï smoothie of sorts. It was cool, refreshing and definitely filling enough to replace a meal. The juice was equally delicious and well made. You could taste each of the components and I think it went well with my meal. It is pricey and might hurt your pockets a bit if you eat a lot (I spent about $28 on the 3 items) but well worth it for a treat. Considering the fact that I ate half of each item for lunch and have more than enough leftover to finish for dinner, I can't say the price was too bad. Overall, I'd have to say this place is pretty awesome! Next time I'll have to switch my order because I forgot that I'm not the biggest fan of tuna when it comes to raw fish, but it was still great. Next time I'll just get a large acaï bowl and a small poke bowl. The food was great, the atmosphere was great and if it wouldn't burn a hole in my bank account, I'd probably make this my go to lunch spot at least 3/5 workdays. 4.5 stars read more

I know they are known for their Poke bowls but i wasn't in a raw fish mood this early afternoon..so i did the B.Y.O pita, over white rice instead of a pita, with spicy tuna salad (and it is SPICY. i love heat so i don't mind it) spinach, cucumber, tomato and green onion. I also added their O.G marinade/sauce to amp it up..OMG it is so good.
