Wow, Zeke's Beans & Bowls was not my choice but I'm happy it was made for me. Lol It has an awesome atmosphere, and a fun menu. Even if it's not your thing, go with and open mind the food is amazing. I had the fajitas pita, it was so yummy. The grilled chicken was so juicy and so well seasoned. Although it seemed like everything was being done by one person the wait was worth every bit of the pita. Break out of your shell and try something new, you won't regret it. I didn't!!!! read more

Fresh, delicious poke bowls. I only wish Zeke's was around when I was a student at ODU - I would have been here all the time. Alas, I've moved away and have a much harder time finding a quality poke where I live. My boyfriend and I visited on our first day when we visited Norfolk, and then again on the last day, on our way to the airport leaving the city. Both times we ordered the same thing - they're that good! My boyfriend loved the spicy poke bowl, and I loved the O.G. poke bowl. I am a bit disappointed in how expensive it is - adding rice costs extra (most poke places upcharge for brown or black rice) and masago costs a whopping extra $2. These things are normally included in a poke bowl, so it wasn't exactly fun paying almost $30 for two small poke bowls. (I've had cheaper poke in San Francisco, which isn't exactly known for its low cost of living.) That being said, Zeke's uses quality ingredients and has an incredibly nice staff, plus free cucumber-infused water! read more

Cute little hipster joint with delicious poke. However, consistency is not their strong point. We've ordered the Cali Poke (tuna, seaweed salad, avocado and crab) three separate times and each time the level of spice has been alarmingly different. It's ranged from too mild, to just right, to water chugging, "where's the milk?" blow out hot. When it's right, it was fantastic but the lack of consistency is disappointing. The poke itself though was fresh and light and filling and the avocado and seaweed salads were wonderful additions to the Cali version. We've also ordered the seaweed salad as a side each time and experienced the exact same discrepancies, but this time in amount. This last time, we didn't even get a container that was halfway full. So I'm not a regular Norfolk head (heck, I wasn't one even while going to ODU back in the day), but for this Zeke's location, I would become one. I had been to the Virginia Beach location a few times, and although I love the actual Poke bowls at each place, after this first Zeke's @ Norfolk visit, I definitely would say that I have a preference for this particular one now. I came to this Granby location for the first time a couple days ago with my cousins (one local & two from out-of-town/country), and as we drove up, I noticed that more of the buildings had so much color- murals, paintings, just a lot of brightness and color going on. (After reading a few other reviews, I guess this area is now called the "Arts District" of Norfolk, which makes sense. I've been to other big cities and they like to name their districts accordingly; so this definitely fit.) After we parked, sort of behind the place and walked towards Zeke's, I noticed a few of a the squares on the ground have spray-painted designs on them. Neat! Anyway I digress, caught up in describing the outside area versus the actual location & food! lol. Upon entering, we were greeted by the one visible worker. She was friendly the whole time. The place - I got such a different vibe from this one - it's very spacious, not "beach-y" of course like the location near the ocean front. It still had a "hipster" feel to it, with the eclectic but cool decorations such as - a canvas with Notorious B.I.G. on it (which I loved), a Star Wars themed picture, old sofa, canvas with a lady holding a mug with a tentacle coming out of it (yikes), and some old, cute, animated girls, a big Betty Boop figure, & on the way to the courtyard, where you can dine outdoors, there's even an old projector screen (see my pictures.) Very cool place. I love how spacious it is compared to the Va Beach one. I'm sure a few more tables and chairs could be added and there would still be ample room left. And I even noticed a better "smell" aka "no smell" here. lol. Maybe I'm just weird like that for noticing it. Anyway on to the food! Our cousins from out-of-town opted for the acai bowls, I forget which ones exactly, but they seemed to enjoy them. They tried some of ours as well. My cousin ordered the "Keali'i Bowl" - Tuna, seaweed salad, green onion, cucumber, mayo, Sriracha, & panko bread crumbs. She added avocado, and didn't order rice, but hers was served with it anyway. I ordered the "OG Poke Bowl" - Tuna, Shoyu, sesame oil, sesame seeds, green onion, red rock salt, I added avocado and rice. The Tuna was amazing - just as delicious as I remember, BUT we feel that we didn't get enough tuna. My cousin said she normally gets hers without rice, and just feels like she gets more tuna that way. For me, with my previous experiences at Zeke's at the beach, I also feel that I got more tuna those times, even with rice. That's really the only reason this place wasn't a perfect five. It's still definitely up there. :) Altogether, even though the price of juice and smoothies are steep here, I say the Poke and Acai bowls alone are so worth it. I am definitely a fan of both places, and I know I'll definitely be returning. If you like sushi or super fresh fish, you'll love it here! I read one review where the person was disappointed and bashing the place for only having Tuna or Tofu as the protein; I was thinking, "Wow, usually if you've never been to a place, you read reviews or look at the menu online first!" Yeah, so fair warning; they serve raw Tuna and Tofu here, and Acai Bowls, coffee, smoothies, and juice. It's amazing, guys. Zeke's fan for life. hehehe. But seriously, I am. P.S. If you haven't tried here yet, you're missing out! Everything about this place is 5 stars. They have some of the best service around. Ron and Dylan always are so dang friendly and fast, whether they're slow or busy. They always make sure you have everything you need, and my order never comes out with any problems. Definitely make sure you tip them when you go because they more than deserve it. The acai bowls are my absolute favorite. All of them are delicious, but the breakfast bowl is my #1 because of the strawberries. The poke is amazing as well. My one complaint is the rice could be a little better. It clumps and is kinda dry, but the tuna and everything else more than makes up for it. They're not even a coffee shop, but they got some of the best coffee around. Cold brews and hot. The only coffee I can drink black because of how great the flavors are. Such a fun little spot. They always have new art on the walls and even have outdoor (in the back) seating as well. Asked the waitress for some suggestions to help decide on what to get and she literally read off the menu. So I switched it up yesterday. Instead of the pita, I got the poke bowl. Yum. I opted for the spicy tuna and let me say, this was REALLY HOT. I can handle hot foods but when it comes to hot raw tuna, you can really feel the heat all throughout your tongue. The tuna chunks were generous and fresh. This spicy version was just a little too hot for me to fully enjoy but I certainly did enjoy it. I look forward to going back and will tone it down on the heat for my next visit. Just finished my OG Poke bowl up, wasn't impressed. I didn't taste the sesame oil or the shoyu. The tuna was good, but over all the bowl was dry, I had it with the brown rice. They didn't have half the things on their menu, so that was a bit disappoint as well. read more

Love me some Zekes! I was so excited when they opened one up down the street from me. I always order the strawberry, pear, and mint juice! But I've tried the watermelon one too! Both are very refreshing. My favorite Acai bowl (can't remember the name right now..) had sliced almonds, blueberries, granola, bananas, mango, and coconut. Originally from CA, and a huge açaí lover I was disappointed to find out that there aren't many places that make them in Hampton Roads. So I was beyond pleased when I found Zeke's. TL;DR: I was excited to come here, I won't be back. The reviews on this place are great, and I live just a couple of blocks away, so it has been on my list for a while and I was excited for the chance to come in for lunch today. I went in prepared to enjoy the food and the experience. Fair warning, I am going to get into the weeds a bit because this was so far from the experience I was expecting. First impressions: When we walked in, the place was relatively empty. The woman behind the counter offered us menus which we took then sat down. Decor is not my style, but I don't care as long as the food is good. The restaurant has a very strong smell. Today the predominate smell was coffee, but there is something else under the coffee smell that I found unpleasant. It caught my attention enough that I tried to focus on it but my nose became accustom to it before I could identify what it was. While I read the menu it occurred to me that raw tuna, Asian and Mexican spices, and coffee are a strange combination. It is possible that the off-putting smell came from the combination hitting me in a way my brain didn't understand but it could also have been a sign of something being a bit off. I don't know. We sat down, made our selections and went up to the counter to order. I paid after placing our order. The tip screen had auto-tip buttons starting at 20%, 25% and then custom. In a place were you order at the counter, pay before your meal, and bus you own dishes, this seemed like a high starting point. It was another flag making me uncomfortable. For counter service places, I prefer the higher menu price, no tip approach so the customer know exactly what the deal is. You never want to be thinking about the operational/managerial side of a restaurant when you are eating in it. It is my understanding that counter workers make at least minimum wage (not $2-3 plus tips as most servers do). The only time I saw someone come out in front of the counter was to drop our food off, so if that is enough to put the employees in the "server" category, then I don't like the business approach here. Anyway, I left a 20% tip and went to sit down. The table my daughter selected was clear, but not actually that clean. A couple of crumbs and sticky spots made me think it had a cursory wipe down only. Ugh, little stuff like this always sets me on edge and added to my unease. Drinks: The water dispenser is cucumber water. Another slightly strange flavor choice for a place with an overriding coffee smell. My wife brought water to the table and when I first took a sip, my nose full of coffee smells, I thought the glass was soapy until I put my nose closer and smelled the cucumber. Cucumber water is a nice feature in some places, but this struck me as another thing that was out of place/off-putting in this setting. I had a jasmine green tea which was brewed a bit too long or too hot making it more bitter than I like, but it was well inside the range of acceptable. My wife liked her coffee, and my daughter liked the milk shake she got. Food: My wife and I each ordered spicy tuna pitas. My daughter got watermelon salad and the Poké nachos. The pita bread was good, the idea behind that sandwich was interesting. The texture was a bit odd and there was way too much sauce for my taste. When every ingredient is covered in sauce (spicy tuna sauce, seaweed salad with lots of dressing, plus additional sriracha mayo) it becomes hard to actually taste anything. Something in it tasted a bit funny to me, but I assumed it was just the odd combo. My wife had the same impression and only ate part of hers. My wife and daughter liked the watermelon salad which they split. The poké nachos were another story entirely. My daughter took one bite and immediately said she didn't like the tuna. She loves sushi so this surprised me. I reached over and took a piece. She was correct, something wasn't good. The sauce, again in a room of coffee smells, is a bit hard to parse but much like my sandwich it tasted funny (bad). The fish, while smelling okay, didn't taste right either (bad). I chewed it for a second before spitting it out. I am not certain what the issue was but what it reminded me of is fish that has started to get old and then was washed off.* It was a bit mealy with a flat first taste then a mild sour aftertaste. We pushed that aside. Whatever the issue, you never want this type of experience with raw fish. Most of the reviews of this place are good, so perhaps my dissatisfaction stems in part from my nose playing tricks on me due to the plethora of very strong smells that are mixed in here (doubt we are alone in this). I suspect that isn't the whole issue. At a minimum, the combination of coffee and raw fish along with strong, varied sauces is a poor one. I sincerely hope our experience was abnormal, but we are one and done with this place. * I am not saying this is the case, I hope that it is not, but this is how my brain parsed it. read more

It's like a hole in the wall that is the best kept secret of Norfolk. We were heads to Push Comedy Theater and thought we grab a quick bite across the street. zeke's was the right choice. I had the PETA pita and it was AMAZING! I never thought avocado, almonds, and raisins would make a proper filling for a pita sandwich. I paired it with the Sriracha aioli--and it gave my sandwich a kick! It was spicy, and I had to drink LOTS of water, but it was that "I can't stop eating it" kind of hot! It was superb! Love, love, love this place. I'm addicted to the Haole bowl, and although I haven't eaten the poke bowls myself, my friend can't stop raving about them. And the coffee is usually very good. We must go every two weeks or so. Can't stay away. But they don't get the full 5 stars only because there's one person in there who just seems like she never wants to be there. She gives good service, but while the other employees make it feel like an inviting atmosphere, this one person makes it feel almost oppressive, like she can't wait until we all leave. Yum! When going into the store, it was nice and cozy and the lady there was very welcoming. It was my first time there, and I wanted to get a pokè bowl. I got the Cali one with tuna, cucumber, crab, sirracha, mayo, avocado and had brown rice. I also got the strawberry, pear, and mint juice. Delicious! The food was spicy, but I thought it was great as I like spicy foods. The juice was a great combination and felt refreshing. Call me a "newbie" to this type of food. I went here with a traveling companion and I mispronounced my order as "POKE". He and a few others in line heard me and laughed, but the person taking my order said that it happens all the time and I shouldn't feel embarrassed. I got the basic order and quite enjoyed the weird consistency of soft fish cubes with rice. A little hot sauce really perked it up. Ate with my hands, because I couldn't find a big spoon. Free water. Lots of chairs, but some are more comfortable than others. It took me a while to find a comfy one. Very clean restaurant, but there were about 100 smushed green grapes on the sidewalk out front. read more

I stopped in for the first time a couple days ago, finally having a day off and some time to myself. This place seemed to give off a vibe similar to an on campus eatery I frequented while I studied at William & Mary. Now that I'm done with college and back home, I needed a place to curb my college-sickness lol. When I walked inside, I was greeted with a hipster-like atmosphere that I had been expecting based on what I already knew about this place. Only one other patron was inside eating so the guy at the register was able to quickly take my order and explain things to this newbie. I ultimately ordered the spicy tuna pita and a "create your own" smoothie. As I waited, I took some time to admire the surroundings, which were quaint, cute, and comforting. My food came after a short while and I was totally blown away. The tuna was well seasoned and juicy, the seaweed vibrant, the sriracha/mayo sauce blend perfect, and my smoothie was perfectly sweet and refreshing. I had difficulty finishing my food because the pita was really packed, but it was too good not to finish it. It had a mayo-ey base to it, with bits of avocado scattered throughout- it was definitely a crowd pleaser. My boyfriend kept picking at it.
