Not impressed. I went to the Hickory for the first time last Fall with some of my fellow ROTC class mates when the Hickory was at its old location. To be honest I wasn't impressed with the food, I like to pride myself in barbecue, being from the South and having been raised around really good barbecue in Texas, Virginia, Missouri, and also having had North Carolina bbq. The brisket didn't really catch me. Later I would have another chance to try their food, after a short period of being employed there as their meat cutter, and a semi-cook. During this time the only thing that really stood out to me at the Hickory is their steak. Everything else is meh. If I was cooking at the time, I would whoop up something for myself of what I had around me. But as far as the menu went the only thing that I could really recommend from this place is the steak. I haven't had a good steak in Idaho other than going to Texas Roadhouse in Idaho Falls. But as far as Rexburg goes, if you want a steak I'd go to either the Hickory for it, or take a 30min drive down to Idaho Falls. OR go to the local grocery store and get the steak. The wait time for the food to get to you since they have been at their new location is ridiculous, at first I wanted to believe it was because a lot of new staff was working there. But later I came to the realization that it isn't the fault of the staff but the lack of proper management and leadership. The management doesn't properly manage, it's a common complaint from a lot of the current and former employees. The employees don't feel like proper training is given. That even proper leadership isn't really shown. Which is reflective in the speed and quality of the food being served. The reason the steak comes out so well is because a select group of cooks are either very well experienced with cooking steak or have been given proper training in cooking steak. If you want good barbecue, I would recommend going to either Blisters here in Rexburg, or going down to Idaho Falls and hit up Pitmaster BBQ. read more

If you are ever on highway 20 through Rexburg Idaho heading to or from Yellowstone or Island Park you must stop to eat at "The Hickory." Be sure and order the Big Blue Burger if you love Blue Cheese. You can request the course blue cheese throughout the burger other wise it's sliced blue on top. You will leave happy full and satisfied. For the little lads in your life you can order off their $5 kids menu. They have the best sliders I have ever tasted. The sirloin steak with mashed potatoes is great too. They make a great $3 lemonade with free refills. Next time I will try their fresh pecan pie. They have a beautiful quiet back room for corporate parties. Terrible service. We waited forever and there was hardly anyone else in there. Once we finally got served the waitress was super rude and unfriendly to us that we literally got up and left to go somewhere else. Update - decided to try this place again. They changed locations and we thought maybe it would be better this time. Wrong. The girls at the front desk were all just standing around staring at the ground while there was a table waiting for a check, a group waiting to be seated, and us waiting for our orders to be taken. Seriously what the heck are those girls doing?! It's like they are afraid to work. After waiting what felt like an eternity , we got up and left. Of course when one of the girls saw us get up, she quickly scurried over apologizing as we walked out the door. This is ridiculous. Whoever is the manager needs to seriously reconsider their work ethic and think about hiring all new staff. Laziest staff ever. Should have learned our lesson the first time. I had to drop a couple of stars. I regularly order the pulled chicken to go. The past 2 times I've ordered it, its had chicken bones in it. I haven't been back for a while for fear of getting more bones with my pulled chicken. I mentioned it to the front desk person the second time I bought some and she just shrugged and said, it happens sometimes. Really cute place, and probably the nicest place in Rexburg. The night we were there all of the waiters were males, which was interesting... The reason I give it a low review is for the food that we got. We had heard things about their pie shakes and were excited to try them out, but were extreemly dissapointed when we got them. They were really milky and the pie was not very impressive. the cups were also like not even half filled. We got them to go so it was in a 21 ounce paper cup. :/ We were really sad... if you're looking for good shakes, don't go here. The Burg or Big Juds are way better. read more

The Hickory has very high quality food that is great for a special occasion or a date night. I enjoy the atmosphere in their restaurant and how they work with their customers. I was able to book a reservation online for my wife's birthday on the day of easily and made it a special night. The only cons I have with the Rexburg location is the young wait staff that seem inexperienced in their job or not trained properly. Although, I have never had such a terrible experience that has ever halted my want to return. read more

Love The Hickory! We've been a few times and it's so good! This time, my husband and I both got burgers. He got the Honey Badger and I got the BBQ Bacon. The burgers are HUGE and so flavorful! I am a sucker for toasted buns and they hooked me with theirs. Their flavored lemonades are also killer (I recommend strawberry). The only downside is that the fries aren't anything special. I absolutely love this place! Such good food. Easily the best food in Rexburg. However, my visit today was slightly subpar. It may be because I have high expectations, knowing what they can produce, but today's experience was mediocre. I got the Honey Badger Burger. And while it was juicy, greasy, packed with flavor, and absolutely delicious, the rest left me dissatisfied. I paid to upgrade to sweet potato fries (+$2 over the included fries). I just took a party of 10 for dinner. We were able to sample quite a bit from the menu. Everything was great. I wish I could give 1/2 stars because they deserve a 4 1/2. The only reason I didn't give them a 5 is that we had to send back the Filet Mignon because it was a little past medium, and I was super clear that anything past medium rare would not be okay. But....it was worth the wait for the redo. This filet melted in my wife's mouth. A few people sampled and all agreed it was excellent. We started our meal with four appetizers: Hand-cut fries, loaded hand-cut fries (bacon and cheese), sweet-potato fries and onion rings. We did have to ask for appetizers plates (our waiter was very young, and likely very new on the job, but she worked super hard and will be seasoned in no time). They have some great lemonade concoctions. We had three different types, and everyone loved theirs. We had 6 other steaks at the table, and they were all perfectly done. The steaks were flavorful. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Two people had the pulled pork plate, and another had the 3-meat sampler, and another had a full rack of ribs. Portions were very generous. Their BBQ and smoked meats got top marks from everyone at our table. Lots of options for side dishes, and everyone was happy. Each dinner was served with a hot, soft, fluffy biscuit. They do not serve alcohol of any kind (not an issue for us, but a deal breaker for some folks). Our check came to about $225 before tip. And heck, that's pretty amazing for 10 people with appetizers, drinks and main courses. We will definitely be back! read more

Rexburg has begun to have a surge in BBQ interest lately, and The Hickory is definitely trying to cash in on that. This is a more "sit-down" type of establishment as opposed to some of the other BBQ options located in town. They offer a number of meats and sides. Burgers are large and very juicy. They bring a great deal of fries in the wooden crate your meal comes in, and if you like drinking out of a mason jar, this is your place. During my visit I had the pulled pork sandwich. This is definitely a Kansas City BBQ as opposed to Carolina style. Thick sauce (if that's your thing) with generous helpings. It was pretty good and the pork wasn't dry, which is one of the most often occurring BBQ sins. I also had the mac n' cheese bites, which are fried balls of that yummy comfort food. My next visit I got the brisket, which was not as satisfying. It was a little dry and I felt like it didn't fit with the rest of the food I had. It wasn't bad, just not my kind of beans and biscuits for brisket (I'm used to bread and pickles, like Rudy's). There isn't anything wrong with this place, it's a little spendy so I don't plan on frequenting the establishment, but in all, it's a quality restaurant. Rest assured, I am not an employee of any business here on yelp since I work in the medical field (not for a doctor's office or hospital). I picked this town because it had the closest Marriott property to the west Yellowstone entrance (gotta use those gift cards!). After a very long day of driving from Bozeman through Yellowstone to here, I was hungry and tired. I found this place on Yelp and decided to take a gander. I placed my order with the waitress and while waiting for food, I googled the history of Rexburg. It turned out I was in a Mormon town (yay it's safe here)! I asked the waitress for confirmation, and she excitedly asked, "Are you LDS???" I told her I wasn't, but I can respect the faith; I have visited Salt Lake City's temple and been to the conference center. She then gave me a brief history of BYU-Idaho where she's going to school, and it was a very productive conversation. On to the food: Potato soup - As it was cold outside, this was very comforting. The soup was flavored just right, not too salty. Mashed potatoes - These were gummy, but I think that's the characteristic of the Idaho potato. I was glad to see that they come out the same way for this restaurant versus making at home with this potatoes. Green beans - These were alright. These might have been pre-frozen, but I needed some greens in my diet. Bison burger with fries - Yum! This is exactly what I needed after trekking through 3 states all day. I ordered medium rare, and my burger was juicy. The fries were perfectly made - crispy, not soggy. Overall the food was good, but the wonderful waitress made my night. I was traveling alone, and she chatted with me at appropriate times (not too much, not too little). I was also delighted at eating the maximum possible dishes of Idaho potatoes in Idaho. Our waitress came to check on us once in the 30 minutes we were waiting for our food and after 45 minutes when people that arrived 25 minutes after us had received their hamburgers (what we ordered as well) I asked our waitress to which she responded she just checked on it and then 12 minutes later, she came out with dry over cooked, unseasoned hamburgers. And said that there must have been a mix up in the kitchen. No apology. The service is besides the point. The meat was not at all like the burgers at the old location.
