The only problem with this place, particularly for a tourist who may only get one opportunity at a meal, is what the heck to choose from the menu, which has too too many things from which to choose. We got a chicken bacon ranch wrap and a Brisky Burger that comes topped with that slow cooked brisket. And the cactus tails (onion strings) and cheese curds on the side. I mean doesn't that already sound like a killer selection of food...in just one meal! Postscript: the burger is to die for excellent; Not so much the wrap, although the avocado salsa makes it good. We had the appetizer platter, so good! 5 of us ate for 130 bucks including a $30 tip. This place is in a strip mall along with many other restaurants and a cold stone creamery. Great lunch at the Hickory. We tried all kinds of things. The potato bomb with the burnt ends is always delicious. Had that Apple pecan salad and it was very good. Also had a brisket sandwich, and a hamburger with brisket on it. Everything was delicious. The tots are great. They have a great drink selection. Service was excellent. I have tried several menu items and they have been fun and tasty. I enjoy their drinks menu, where I can add a variety of flavors to their lemonade or a soft drink. The decor is fun and nice. The food I ordered was somewhere between okay and good. Most places have nice, thick shakes. For some reason the shakes are super runny. Maybe some like that consistency, but not I. The Elvis Pigsley burger has a weird ground pork flavor for the patty. And the fries were okay. There were fours of us eating: 2 had 3 meat BBQ platter, 1 had a potato bomb and Cole slaw and 1 had the fried shrimp & steak. We also had the sampler appetizer. I've never done a review. I grew up in Tennessee and southwest Missouri. We cut oak and hickory trees for firewood and for cooking and smoking meat. We used axes and hatchets. We didn't have chainsaws. I tried this Hickory restaurant a few times in rexburg. Which is where I live now. For quite a while. That food they sell is dressed up fast food. It's not hickory wood cooked or smoked. I know that. Ask them where they get their meat. Ask them where they get their supplies. Probably the same place the local jail gets theirs. Ask them if they burn hickory to smoke or cook anything. That's not real food. It's dressed up fast food. Nothing more. We used hickory wood to stay warm. To cook. And to smoke Food and meat. They blaspheme what hickory wood can really do. It's quite sad what they have done to the good name of hickory wood. I doubt most will understand what I'm saying. Not a fan of the food overall. Terrible server!! Spilled ranch on a person and was awkward about it. At one point asked for a wet rag and they brought out mini wipes in packets which did nothing. I ate here last year during the peak of Covid when everything was shut down in WA. Idaho was open and it was fantastic. I came back to try it out again. I called ahead the day before to get reservations. Had them booked for 7pm for 6 people. She took down my name and phone number. Showed up and they didn't have me on the list. The restaurant was packed. We ended up waiting about 15 minutes. The manager was very apologetic. We sat down and had a great waitress. She took our drink order and brought them pretty quickly. She was very friendly and upbeat and even brought me a GF menu. Food came out 20ish min later. I had the smoked prime rib med rare. The cook on it was perfect. It was supposed to be prime, but honestly seemed more like choice. It had some tough parts but overall it was very good. The flavor was fantastic. I couldn't finish it all. I got the sweet potato fries and coke slaw. The slaw was awesome. Very much how I make my own. The fries were just normal, as expected. The sweet butter is always a hit. Frustrating experience on 7/4/23, I stopped in with family for dinner. There was 10 of us. We split the bill into 2. Food was fine and all. Waitress asked if we were done and came up to us and said give me your card. Would not give us a bill, ran back to her computer a few times as she didn't have the bill correct she was saying. Then I asked for a copy to review and she shows me this payment screen and scrolls it. Things are not adding up in my head as the price was outrageous for a family of 5. I paid and then she brings a receipt and on the bottom it had a 20% gratuity that never was spoken about. The menu only stated that " gratuity may be added for parties of 10 or more" Granted I understand big parties take more, all I wanted was communication and not act sneaky as the waitress did. I have no problem paying for large parties. When talking to the manager, my sister in law felt dismissed and her perspective was not even listened to. I'm always up for BBQ and the Hickory is a solid 4 star restaurant. The menu is typical and fulfilled my expectations. I tried the beef brisket which had a fantastic flavor, texture, and moisture. I also tried the pulled pork. It was a little dry so that was disappointing. The aide dishes are also just right, in choices, flavor, and portion. I was in Rexburg for business this last week and planned to take some potential new hires out to dinner. With options in Rexburg being notoriously sparse this new establishment popped up and I thought we would give it a shot. Going in with low expectations I was pleasantly surprised! The food here was average for bbq but great for the Rexburg area in a strip mall of all places. It's definitely a better option than the Costa vida next door. I got the three meat platter with brisket burnt ends and turkey. The brisket and turkey was a pleasant surprise as they were actually pretty darn good, and while the burnt ends were good they weren't candied/twice smoked the way they should be but still great. The sides were also good...take a note and get the bacon green beans. They took me back to my great grandmother's beans...they are wonderful. Others in our group got the burgers and they also pleased. All in all for an urban style BBQ joint it's a 4 star in Rexburg 3 star anywhere else. If you are in town give it a shot. read more

The menu has so many appealing items to choose from. We started with the sampler. We enjoyed all the items even if the onion ones were a bit over cooked, they still had good flavor. This was our first time to Rexburg. I enjoy checking out the local BBQ places when traveling. We were very impressed with The Hickory. A lot of variety on the menu. We loved the cheese curd appetizers! The meats had a great smoky flavor. The pulled pork was our favorite. The sliced brisket was dry but had good flavor. The prices were cheap compared to other BBQ places we have eaten at. Our server, Katie, was the highlight of the meal. Filet was good and prepared a little over cooked for my taste and way I ordered. The baked potato was hard undercooked and cool. So cool the chunk of butter didn't melt. Mac and cheese was cool and the cheese failed to melt sufficiently and had a bizarre taste for some sort of seasonings. Not a hit at all and would pass on it.
